(1)I don’t understand this post.(Reproduced below)                                                       I do know that a ‘foreign’ (not Spanish reg) vehicle can only legally be in Spain for 6 months at a stretch. I don’t know how long it has to then be out of Spain?
Years ago people would drive over a border for a few days and then supposedly restart a further 6 months but that wasn’t really legal.

Perhaps Glenda is back and forth a couple of months at a time. Can you get her to explain as there is no contact details?

(2) Having been insured with Abbeygate for three years, I have now changed to Liberty Seguros, and I’d like to recommend their brokers who are based in Estepona, Evelyn and Alan Harris (evelyn@hispain.es). The service they have offered has been exemplary, the premium lower, for better coverage. For example, this cover offers me a replacement vehicle if I breakdown as well as if I’m involved in an accident, and I will be taken home as well in the event of an accident disabling the car – unlike my previous insurer.
One thing you sometimes aren’t aware of until you need it is that Gibraltarian insurers (such as Abbeygate) do not have access to the Spanish insurers database. This can cause problems when you come to insure with a different provider based in Spain – no claims bonuses, etc.

Recommendation – Citizens Advice Spain

This a voluntary body, working with no government funding and relying entirely on donations to keep going. You can contact them via their web page, www.citizensadvice.org.es. This seems to be the one place that expats, faced with local or national bureaucracy, can get straight, correct and legally verified answers to problems.

I can’t recommend them highly enough, but do please make a small donation to help them keep going. It can be anything from €5 upwards, although of course if you can afford more, they would welcome it with open arms.

Puppy – Dilly

We went to the English Market at Trapiche wearing my special ‘Axarquia Animal Society Adopt Me Scarf’  hoping to find my new owner.   After looking all round the market we found a quiet place for me to play.  We met lots of people who made all sorts of oohing and aahing noises and said how wonderful I was but no one took me home.   My rescuer said that here in Spain there are many people suffering from a terminal illness called ‘Great Age Disease’  –  and this means that they think they will die before I do !   I don’t understand any of this but don’t I look pretty in my red scarf………..

My rescuer seems to be getting very fond of me – he says my new owner will have to be a very special person…….

Wanted –Briwax
I am looking for a supplier of the furniture wax called Briwax. It’s a wax with colour like Victorian Pine which protects and colours wood without gloss and allows the natural grain of the wood to show through.

don’t seem able to locate a supplier here in Spain.

It is very flammable if left in heat which is perhaps why it is so hard to find here. Does anybody have any knowledge of where I might track down this product here in Spain or of anything similar?

Home Needed for Lola  

Hi, I am Lola. I am desperate. I need to find my forever home very soon. Or even a new foster home would be nice. More than three months ago I was so, so terrified when nice people found me and took me to the rescue shelter in Torrox. I did not like to be there because I am so tiny and all the others are so big and noisy. Happily I found a foster home but unfortunately my foster mom has now to travel to her home country.
As you can see I have nice big ears and I am very vigilant. My foster mom says I look like a bat! She says bats are beautiful. I follow all the time my foster mom and don´t like to run anywhere. I am may be 4 years old and only 4 kg – very handy size.

(1)I had to smile when I read the desperate plea of a Torrox resident for more publicity of local activities. When my family and I moved to Torrox back in the late 1990’s, we all used to complain about the exact same thing, blaming the slothfulness of the local Ayuntamiento.
There are often wonderful things happening around the pueblo, generously put on by local groups and associations, and there’s nothing more frustrating than finding about them ‘after the event’, as it were.
In the end we took matters into our own hands and started a little newsheet called ‘The White Village’, detailing local news and events around Torrox, getting much of our info from the councillor in charge of cultural activities. We were pleasantly surprised that the council was very helpful, and more than happy to keep the extranjero’s content, (there was only a dozen or so of us then mind you!).
Perhaps someone needs to act as a mole and find out what cultural events the council do indeed know about – and then let the rest of the community know…?! (Perhaps it’s you Gordon?!)

(2) Torrox theatre – yes,, it is the best kept secret.  I’ve only been to one show.
My choir master from Coraxalia choir tried to book the theatre for a joint rehearsal with One Voice, and he couldn’t get anywhere with them.

Nevertheless – Our Concert at the Granada choirs festival was wonderful and we came first.  (Any singers out there want to join us for Carmina Burana next March?).  Over to you, Gordon.

 

I’m Off Again – Will You Join Me ?

It’s that time of year again, spring is well and truly in the air and my feet are itching to start walking along another Camino de Santiago trail. As far as notice boards I’ve also been trying to get them reinstalled, to no avail.  So notices about art Exhibitions and cultural events end up being stuck on walls.  I’ve written to the Ayuntiamiento and the mayor but my pleas have fallen on deaf ears

I have already traversed Spain from east to west, from south to north, from Mediterranean to Atlantic and through Portugal from Lisbon, always reaching Santiago de Compostela and twice walking further to Finisterre.  So far I have walked almost 3,000 kms during my previous three caminos and I am about to add a further 1,000+ kms with my latest adventure.

I shall be walking from the French border along the northern coast of Spain as far as Ferrol and then inland to Santiago de Compostela and maybe further to Finisterre once again.  This journey will take in three Caminos – Camino del Norte, Camino Ingles and Camino Fisterra.  I have plotted 40 days of walking, a lot of it quite strenuous, but continuously through stunning scenery.  I am expecting a lot of rain and have prepared my gear accordingly, but am really hoping to be as lucky with the weather as I’ve been in the past and see plenty of sunshine and blue skies which will enable me to take lots of lovely photos.  I will be walking every step of the way, carrying all my gear on my back and staying in pilgrim albergue accommodation wherever it is available (mixed dorm, bunk beds and lots of snoring!) and I am bound to meet lots of interesting characters.

It would be great to have your company on my journey.  You can follow my progress via my blog where I post at the end of every day including a description of that day’s walk and, if the weather permits, some photos of the beautiful places that I pass through.  You will be in good company, I have a lively bunch of followers who take the time to comment on my daily reports.  You can sign up to receive an email whenever I post an update or just dip in now and then – the choice is yours.  You can find my blog at www.magwood.me.  I leave Compéta today to fly to Santander and then get a bus to Irun where I will start walking tomorrow (by which time I sincerely hope that the current weather forecast for thunder and lightning storms will have changed to something much more welcoming).

Tuesday & Wednesday 3^rd & 4^th May – Coach Excursion to Cordoba Patios.  Please come and join friends of Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar on a 2 day/ 1 night coach excursion to see the Festival of the Cordoba Patios.  This is a contest of patios and crosses that was first started in 1918, where house owners of the city decorate their homes with beautiful flowers and plants in order to win the prestigious awards presented by the municipality.  The patios are in various parts of the city, close to the Jewish quarter and Cathedral and the finest example is found in the Palacio de Viana.

On the first day you will stop for breakfast on the way to Cordoba where you will arrive at approximately 11.00am.  You will check in to the 3* Hotel Selu, which is situated about a 10 minutes walk to the Cathedral.  The rest of the day is free to discover the city and have dinner.

What’s on-   Shhhhush – Torrox has a Theatre

Having lived in Torrox Pueblo for four years we know there is a theatre (its hidden down the side of the senior school in Isaac Albeniz, Rabatilla ….so not actually in the pueblo or the Costa), but apparently the Ayuntamiento has no interest in promoting any programme of activity which might appear there.
On Saturday 2nd April there was an excellent evening of “el tango y la chanson” performed by four accomplished musicians. The audience? There were eleven of us!
Were there posters in the village, Costa, El Morche? No
Were there posters in the tourist offices? No
Was there a listing on the Ayuntamiento’s official site or in town hall office?  No
Or the local town radio? No
Is it the truth that the Ayuntamiento doesn’t know, or care, what to do with its 7.000,000 plus ‘cultural buttonhole’?
Oh by the way we read of the concert on the site of a Malaga based booking agency!

Maybe the reason there is no promotion of activities in Torrox is because, over a year ago the Ayuntamiento removed the only three notice boards in the village…..and never replaced them so now anyone hoping to ‘catch’ an event needs to ‘know’ through the local drums where things are!
Asking a local usually brings the response “it’s where it was last year”.

By acclamation, returns to Ventana Abierta a musical training with an innovative style Constanza Jazz Trio is the most recent project of Canadian singer Constanza Giacomelli, whose voice has a unique style and who lives in Málaga. For this she brings together two of the best jazz musicians in the area: Javier Palomo (guitar) and Markus Schneider (bass).

The selection of tunes they will play include their own take on Billie Holiday, Amy Winehouse, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Greogory Porter, Frank SInatra, Melody Gardot, among others.

Recommendation Needed-Air Conditioning

We are considering putting air conditioning in 2 small bedrooms which are only used every August when our family come. Information on Camino El Chorro

Just to let you all know what is happening with the Camino in El Chorro.

The website will be up and running again from the 18th April. The walk will be open from the 22nd. The tickets will cost 10€ each.

There is talk that local businesses will be able to have a allocation of tickets, we will of course pass these on to our clients if we get them.

We are still offering the 2 nights B&B with 1 night evening meal and wine for 100€  If we can get the tickets for you we will. As we are a small establishment I suggest you book your rooms before you  order your tickets, we will always swap around if possible.

We are also offering an extra night at 40€ and can combine it with the walk and for the more adventurous quad biking and or horse riding.

Polar Air recently installed a new Samsung aircon/heating unit in our bedroom to replace a 12-year-old irretrievably broken one.

A revelation!  Quiet enough not to wake my tetchy husband, competitively priced and cheap to run, and the remote control is so easy to use.

You can also have a sensor which can detect movement in the room and switch the unit off if the room is empty for twenty minutes.

The town hall of Cómpeta informs everyone that because of the recent lack of water, due to insufficient rain, the Town Hall bans-

-Watering of land, gardens, trees, streets, terraces,…

-Use of water for swimming pools, fountains,…

-Washing of vehicles and other objects.

This means there is only one way water can be used –  for human consumption.

Residency ?

My partner and I have always thought we were residents by default – we’ve lived here permanently for eleven years now and have entered tax returns etc each and every year. However we now want to import a UK plated car and obtain a Spanish driving licence and have been advised we need the full residency certificate to do so. Friends have advised we need to complete the ex18 form and we have a link to what other items we need. So I am really just seeking any tips or experiences that people have had who have done the same. My experience of Scalewatcher.

As my boiler was repeatedly cal-ing up I bought a Scalewatcher, which was very expensive. After a number of weeks the boiler caled up again so I got a filter system installed and also contacted Salewatcher stating that the unit was not working. They exchanged the unit saying the original was faulty. From then I had both systems running and had no cal in the boiler. I have changed the filters at regular intervals. 2 years ago the Scalewatcher lights went out after about 5 years use and I removed it and sincet then there has been no cal in the boiler. So it would seem that the Scalewatcher had no effect at all as the filter system removed the cal.   Robert

Microsoft Scam

(1) These chaps phoned me up too, on a day that I felt awkward! They told me I had a problem with my computer so I said it was my son’s and I only used it occasionally but if I had done something wrong it would make him angry and begged the man to help me. I did everything he told me to, but the computer just didn’t respond as he said it would. After about twenty minutes he was getting desperate and I was sobbing down the phone. He said he couldn’t help me, and was very apologetic, however he got quite upset when I asked him if an Apple engineer might do better with my son’s iMac! Not been troubled since…
I’ve no children and not had a Microsoft device for nearly 20 years now.

(2) This is definitely a scam & should be avoided at all costs. Microsoft will never get in touch with you. We got caught several years ago & it cost us dearly as we were told we needed to pay immediately for their product to remove all the problems & we would lose everything unless we bought it. Do not be fooled as once this is done, they still hound you on the phone. Just threaten to report them as you know this is a scam & put the phone down. This scam has been going on for years & I suspect a lot of people are fooled by it as they are scared of losing all their data. Obviously, they are making a lot of money out of people who do not understand the technicalities of a computer, mostly the older generation who can ill afford the money. We still get phone calls from them at times even though we were foolish enough to pay for their so called repair product which did absolutely nothing. Do not get caught.  B.C.

(3) Yes, absolutely it’s a scam. They’ve been plaguing us for the last week or so.  If you Google the term you’ll see such scam calls have been around for years.

It hasn’t made the slightest difference answering them in Spanish, swearing in English or putting the phone down without speaking – any response at all seems to just encourage them. They’ve all been Indian callers although the numbers purport to be Spanish, starting with 95 or 91. I have noticed though that they always end in 00 or 0000 so any such number is now ignored. But it is a nuisance to have the phone ringing repeatedly during the day.  Our landline provider Vodafone could put a block on the number getting through to us if it was a particular number (restringir) but it’s constantly changing (I’ve noted down six different ones so far) so for the moment I intend to carry on noting any number changes and reporting them all to Vodafone if they continue pestering us…

Microsoft will never call you unless returning a call you made to their support services. If you do call Microsoft Support and they say they will call you back, ask for the name or ID number of the helper who will be calling you back to ensure the return call is legit.

A technical support scam refers to telephone fraud that claims to be a legitimate technical support service. It can either begin by a cold call, usually claiming to be associated with a legitimate-sounding third-party, with a name like “Microsoft” or “Windows Technical Support” or it could begin with an unsuspecting user searching for commercial technical support via a popular search engine such as Bing or Google. Remote desktop software is used to connect to the victim’s computer, and the scammer then uses a variety of confidence tricks that employ various Windows components and utilities (such as the Event Viewer), third-party utilities (such as rogue security software), and reference sites like Wikipedia or summaries written by security companies to make the victim believe that the computer has issues that need to be fixed, before proceeding and requiring the victim to pay for “support”. These scams usually target users, such as senior citizens, who are unfamiliar with the tools used in the process, especially when initiated by cold calls.

I went shopping at Mercadona yesterday and spent 50 euros

on expensive items like large olive oil tuna, cola cao coffee etc

when Gaby and i spoke to Antonio the chairman of Los Angeles he was very happy,  said to thank you all very much and told us that the new centre would be opening on 14th May and we are all invited to the reception

I am taking the clothes, food, bedding up to Malaga on Friday

and will get more info on that event then

Flying via Norwich

I would like to thank the thoughtful people who reported on flying to Norwich from Malaga.  It was a helpful and reassuring post, reminding us of the golden days when we could pop along to Norwich airport,  also from N. Norfolk  (Fakenham area),  park the car in a trice and enjoy a stress free journey.

Our daughter has actually been using Southend airport (she lives near Thetford) ,  finding the extra time and fuel worth it,  to avoid the stress and parking costs of Stansted.   Next week a friend’s daughter is trying the Norwich/ Malaga trip:  we hope her experience will be similar to yours.

Fly to Norwich direct – and enjoy!

My wife and I have just returned from Spain to England for the summer and as we live on the North Norfolk coast we took advantage of the new direct Malaga to Norwich flights operated by flybe. We would wholeheartedly recommend the service to anyone living in the east anglia region.
Flybe is using the smaller Ambraer jets, which are comfortable quick and quiet, seating two either side of the aisle. Flight time was two hours twenty five minutes. Once the food and drink had been served we weren’t bothered with flight attendants trying to sell us scratch cards, perfumes and so on. The cost for us was actually less than flying from Stansted, especially taking into account the huge cost of taxi fares each way to say nothing of the tedious two and a half hour journey.
Norwich Airport is small and totally unlike Stansted whose terminal is really just a massive shopping mall which requires everyone to walk all the way through it. It only took about ten minutes to disembark and go through customs at Norwich. The only thing people flying from Norwich need to factor is in that the £10 a head airport tax is still in place. But we are happy to pay that for the the sheer convenience of flying from there. Also at present you can’t get your boarding passes on line flying out from Malaga although we are sure this will be possible in due course. But as the aircraft only holds about 100 it didn’t take long to obtain them from the check in desk.

We have already booked our return flight from Norwich in the autumn.

Finally, just in case you are thinking we are either flybe or Norwich airport employees or shareholders we assure you we have no connection with either other than being passengers!  D&G.

Whats on –Trip to Gibraltar

The Phoenix Club are off on their next shopping trip to Gibraltar on Friday the 6th May and we have a few seats available.

We have pick ups at at the A1 Garden Centre, Torre del Mar bus station and finally at Algarrobo Lidl at 08.30.  The bus is parked in Morrisons car park and we leave Gibraltar at 16.30.  Due to visa restrictions on entering Gibraltar, please advise if you are a non EU citizen when you book.  Also it is important to remember to bring with you your EHIC card, just in case, and passports are essential.  On the way to Gibraltar we stop to spend a penny and for coffee.

Due to an increase in coach fares we have increased our prices by €1 and we would greatly appreciate if payment was made before the journey.

The price?  €12pp includes a €1 gratuity for the driver.  Children under 12 can join us for 1/2 price.   Still the best value on the coast!
Early booking is recommended if you like a particular place, as seat numbers are allocated on a first come, first served basis.  Plenty to see in Gibraltar apart from the shopping!
