Shingles Vaccination

Fish & Chip Baby Charity ??

We have had a large bin bag dropped outside the shop full of knitting with a note saying it is for the Fish & Chip Baby charity. No name has been left as to who has left it. Advice Questioned

I think you’ll find this came about by greedy sellers and buyers. They quite illegally got the buyer to declare they had bought a property at a low price and the buyer handed over cash for the difference. The seller paid less tax on the profit they’d made (on the difference between their purchase and selling prices) and the buyer paid less purchase tax. It was quite widespread and well known. Of course, the problem was when the buyer came to sell it on some time later. If the new buyer wouldn’t play the fiddle, the seller had to pay tax on the profit between the low declared purchase price and the new selling price…. naughty naughty catchee monkey! This system stops all that and quite right too. If everyone pays the correct amount of dues, everyone gains. (Argos, Amazon et al?) What should happen is solicitors should be sued for not giving the correct information…. good luck with that! Cheers, Keith

Services –Electricity Supply – Torrox Costa – comparison

Hello Digamites,
I would like to compare my electricity bills to anyone in a similar situation, and see if my supply is expensive or whether there is a better deal to be had.
I have a two-bed apartment in Torrox Costa, which I currently use as a holiday home. I’ve had a new boiler. I have a washing machine, fridge-freezer, 4 electric hot plates and lights.
Between May and July last year my bill with Endesa was 48.68 euro for the contract (3 phases 400V) and 5.56 euro for consumption. During this time the property was empty and all electricity switched off. (Power: 6,92 KW (6920W). Electrical Tension: 380V. Type of product with Endesa “Tarifa Luz Endesa”).
Apparently I do not have any appliances working with 380V now. I have been told I need to change the electricity supply to 230V, change fuses in the fuse box and get an electricity certificate. I have also been told it is a little expensive. Additionally I wonder how much Endesa would charge for their work changing things over?
I’m sure I’m not the first to ask these kind of questions and would be very grateful for any advice, especially costs.

he knows all there is to know about plants and planting and how to

make a garden look beautiful and interesting.

He has done the most amazing job on my patch of wilderness,

Ulrich is originally from Germany but has lived in Southern Ireland

for most of his life so his German and English are perfect.

He will do any gardening work including maintenance but his flair is great for people not good at knowing where to plant what. It is not easy in this climate to get it right.

Thank you so much for taking the time to give advice on this tax, known as the ‘Bargain hunters tax’. It is such a disgrace that you should be taxed on something you haven’t paid for….. I mean you wouldn’t pay VAT/IVA on the difference that you should have paid for getting a new kitchen for in the sales!?! We had no warning about this from our solicitor and when the forms did arrive, she said that it wasn’t a matter for her, as it is a Fiscal matter and should be dealt with by an accountant in her office! obviously charging us more money! We will fight it and let you know how we get on. All the best.

He saves a dog, Rex, and cat, Sam, from the shipwreck and retrieves some supplies: weapons, clothes and tools, and builds a shelter. He survives by learning to cook and to farm and to harvest the crops. Then his loneliness begins to haunt him, especially after the loss of Rex. When he sees a group of cannibals on the island, tension and fearenter his life. After he saves the life of a savage (Jaime Fernández), who was about to be eaten by the cannibals, he names him Friday and they become friends.

When Robinson Crusoe sees Caucasians on the island, he learns that Captain Oberzo (Felipe de Alba) had been the victim of a mutiny and he helps him to retrieve his ship.

Of the many great films of Luis Bunuel, Robinson Crusoe is perhaps his most neglected, but in my view, it is one of his very best movies. Defoe’s story of an emissary of white, Christian civilization suddenly alone in the universe and having to fend for himself, is a metaphor from which to explore the human condition and spirit, thrust into a world where, if there is a God, he (or she) is seemingly powerless to help or intervene. Recommendation – Silks

6 of us went to ‘Silks’ for Sunday lunch today (28th Feb). The food was some of the best we’ve had in quite a long time. A choice of 3 meats, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puds, plenty of fresh and tasty veggies. The service was excellent and the price very competitive.

Go along and give it a try. You’ll find them along Torrox Costa prom – with the sea at your back, take the left hand turn next to the Chinese clothing shop

I can recommend the photo shop Calahonda in Torre del Mar, on the main coast road next to the Supersol supermarket, at the Caleta end of Torre.

I took the printed specifications for the photos that came with my passport renewal form, but they already had their own copy…..

I renewed mine last year and had the photos done at FotoSistema , Camino de Málaga 44, Vélez. I told them it was for a British passport and asked them to trim the photos to the required measurements so it would fit into the little box on the application form. The size of the finished photos was the only difference. Linda

My husband and I have just had our passports returned after renewing them.

We had our photos taken at the shop next to the Police station and although

the background was white and I had a smile on my face they were accepted.

Do you remember Annegret (Anne) Puzicha who for several years ran Casa Moda Natural on Calle el Chaparil, Nerja?

Sad to report that she died in hospital on 9th December in her native Germany having returned there a few years ago.

Since the death of her husband Gerhard five years ago, she had been housebound and news of her death has only this week been revealed.

Friends Herbert and Joy Chatters are inviting anyone who knew Anne, as a friend or customer, to join them to remember her over a drink at lunchtime on Sunday, 13th March in Nerja.

I am very sorry to read that you bought your house undervalued according to the Agencia Tributaria.
Who was your legal advisor during the property purchase?
Generally spoken, the Agencia Tributaria calculates the tax value of a property based on the ¨catastral¨ value multiplied by a coefficient that is different depending on the village or town you buy.
Example:
1. You buy a house in Cómpeta priced 100,000 Euros
2. The catastral value of the house is 95,000 Euros
3. The coefficient for Cómpeta is 1.3
4. According to the Agencia Tributaria the value of the house would be 123,500 Euros
5. You will get a bill to pay a percentage over 23,500 Euros.

I’m sorry JH, but sadly this is nothing new. We bought our house in 2003 and a couple of years later received a similar demand for the same reason. We were given 8 days to pay, or risk having our bank account frozen and house embargoed!

Obviously seek professional advise before deciding what course of action to take. But whatever you do, do not ignore this demand.

Tax on House Purchases

We purchased a house in 2013 and also had to pay extra tax.

However, our lawyer had advised us that this was very likely to happen

early in the buying process.

He told us that house values hadn’t been revised since the property slump.

We are facing the same situation; our realtor and our lawyer are helping us thru the process of contesting the charges. It is quite involved as you need to have pictures of the original conditions of the property and an inspector (perrito) sent by your realtor has to come and take measurements, write a report, etc..,

(3) Yes this happened to us based on our purchase 3 years ago. We bought the house at what we considered to be a fair market price, but the tax authorities took it upon themselves to get the house re-valued, and yes, their valuation was about 50% higher than what we paid and they sent us a huge bill for ‘unpaid’ tax.

It’s a dubious practice and according to our solicitor, is of borderline legality. We had the choice of paying the extra tax, or to challenge their valuation. This would mean paying for our own valuation, which together with legal fees to prepare the challenge, came to around 1000 euros. A lot less than the tax we’d have to find. The solicitor thought our chances were good, so we gambled and spent the money.

Then last summer (about 18 months later), the challenge was heard by a tribunal, and they found in our favour.

But the story doesn’t end there… the tax authority in Torrox, even with the results of the tribunal in their hands, decided to ask for a further valuation (note that at no time has anyone asked to be shown around the property), and we’ve just had a bill for 833 euros! It’s not worth us challenging this one so we’ve paid it.

So yes, they’ve finally ground us down!

To return to your question, I guess the decision whether to challenge the assessment depends on the numbers, but even with the recent bill, I think our decision to challenge was the right one.

I am an avid hiker living in Frigiliana. On my last 2 attempts to hike up El Lucero I was stopped by huge banks of clouds completely covering the upper third of the mountain.

Unfortunately this is not discernible from Frigiliana as, on both days, it was clear and sunny here. So what I am looking for is a person who has a clear view of the mountain from their house and who wouldn’t mind a phone call at 8am.

I wouldn’t have a fitted flu-less gas heater anywhere, ever.

You may as well have a portable unit

(about €100 new, with no installation costs and no annual testing) if you must. Beware second-hand heaters!

The red bottle is Butane and the red with black stripe bottle is Propane.

The heater may need to use the correct one for proper combustion.

There must be adequate ventilation to stop the killer CO (carbon monoxide) build up in the room and also to clear the water vapour that is released from the burning gas.

Responses – Water Leakage

I had the same problem a couple of years ago. Spent a lot of time trying to locate the leak and had several experts out trying to resolve the issue. It turned out to be very simple. One of our toilet cisterns in the bathroom had a tiny bit of cal on the sealing joint that had worn the plastic sealer with the result that the plunger was not closing completely. We changed the unit for a few euros and problem solved. Richard

We had an under floor leak last summer, we first believed it may be the top of the pump as it had been leaking. My husband changed that but it made no difference. Next, we called in our plumber, who advised us he could hear the water running somewhere in our guest bathroom but couldn’t pinpoint it. He asked if we had house insurance and if so to contact them. The Insurance Co. sent a plumber who said the same and after firstly checking the shower control unit said he needed a specialist. The insurance co. followed up very quickly with the specialist who pinpointed it with all sorts of equipment and it was eventually fixed, new parts replaced and everything put back the way it should have been.

Don’t fiddle about, call your plumber first and if needed get your insurance company in pronto.

Without seeing the setup it’s difficult to say. It works by having the pump run to build up a small pressure and the pump cuts out with a pressure switch.

When a tap (faucet) is opened the pressure drops and the pump runs.

There will be one or two non return valves fitted on or near the pump (suction and/or discharge) that could be weeping back and allowing the pressure to drop, so not necessarily a leak under the tiles?

A plumber will disconnect the pump and pressure test the lines into the house. You can do this yourself with a bit of fiddling with an old bike inner-tube and a bike pump if you’re handy?

Pump suction and/or discharge valves can sometimes be taken apart and cleaned, usually a bit of grit on the seat. If it happens regularly there are suction filter/separators available (well in the UK there are?),

We have had this problem of the Water pump coming on with no apparent reason.

Following investigation, we found that the toilet water cistern was leaking into the toilet pan.

To check if this happening, put 2 pieces of toilet paper under the rim at the back of the pan,side by side.

If these become wet, they will adhere to the back of the pan, which proves there is a leak.

The cause may be a build up of cal on the seals, which can be remedied by putting a cal solvent

into the system, or replace the seal on the bottom of the plunger.

Advice Please – Tax on House Purchase

We have just received a big tax bill from the Agencia Tributaria de Andalucia on a house we bought claiming we have bought the house undervalued…and now we need to pay 8% on the difference they say it should have been sold at….. another 50% higher! Services – Movistar – Negative Experience

I can endorse everything said by the previous poster. I changed to Movistar when the company I was using refused to replace free, a 13 month old router that was supplied by them and had ceased working. It was still within the manufacturers 2 year warranty, but the company explained that they only offered a 1 year warranty, and this was explained in their ‘small print’. They wanted to charge me 50 euros for a router available in Worten for 34 euros. I told them not to bother. This company offered 9 – 5 service weekdays only. Since changing to Movistar I have a service team available 24/7, with English speaking staff. They have a fleet of service vans so are very prompt in dealing with faults unlike the others who usually don’t to house calls at all, but post you a new router which takes days to arrive and you have to fit yourself. Movistar usually have the best speeds. Fixed lined are rarely affected by weather conditions, their TV is a free optional extra, so in my mind they are worth every extra penny paid. They were bad in the past but have certainly up their game, and their customer relations

The lady who sits on Torrox Costa market at the very end near the Malaga Playa hotel he’s delicious free range eggs, but you need to get there early. Another outlet is the Torrox Costa Yoga Centre and also the mini market on Avenida de America ( where the Hong Kong restaurant is ) .

The German butcher across the road from the mini market sells the most delicious smoked ham .

I have been supplying free range and organically produced eggs for years, my hens are truly free range.

Although they have sheds for inclement weather and to lay, they all (80ish) roost overnight 3 metres up in our trees–you are welcome to visit if you wish, many people have.

One of my outlets is the organic market at the garden centre between Vinuela and Velez Malaga every Saturday between 10am and 2pm.—ask for Jo.

Recommendation – Buddha

Having seen several recommendations, latterly that from Marj on 16th
February on Digame, Coral and I went over to the Buddha Restaurant at
Penoncillo for lunch today. Wow, a bit special or what!
By far the best Indian food I have ever eaten in Spain, and alongside
the best I have eaten in London. What fabulous flavours, what a
comprehensive menu, what charming service. Never mind the Menu del
Dia, dive into the main menu, so very interesting, so many dishes, not
at all like the average Indian. And the staff so happy to explain and
assist in your choice. Even the various rice dishes were so full of
wonderful flavours. All I can say is go, and enjoy!
And to cap a fabulous meal, who came in to the restaurant, but old
friend Piyush, who will be known to many of you as a great cook of
Indian food, who is apparently supplying the restaurant. Good to see
you Piyush, about time you opened up again yourself, We miss you.

Warning – Processionary Caterpillars…

Whilst walking my dog this evening I saw two rows of these caterpillars crossing the track.

This was about 7pm on Carril del Espejo, Competa, about 500 metres before the boundary with Torrox. Map reference 36.788257, –3.971101.

There is a pine tree near the track covered in nests so they are obviously on the move. Take care. Alan.

Sad News –

As a dear friend of Sheena, and on behalf of her husband John and family, I am very sad to advise you that Sheena died on 23^rd February in Velez Comarcal Hospital. Praise for Telfonica Movistar’s great service
Over the past ten years I’ve heard many complaints about Movistar (Telefonica). Typically people claim they are slow, they don’t fix problems, their ADSL connections fail to meet promised speed, and their staff don’t speak English.
We have had a Movistar landline ADSL data connection packaged with a mobile phone for years. When there has been the occasional problem it has been solved either by phoning 1004, where there are English speaking personnel (we don’t speak Spanish), or by going to one of the Movistar shops.
I recently doubled the ADSL speed to 20Mb in a simple online process after discovering, while doing a routine internet speed check, that I could get twice the speed at no extra cost. I ordered it online and it worked three hours later. The speed we actually get is 19.5Mb.
Two days ago our Movistar ADSL modem/router stopped working. The lights went out and it was dead. I phoned 1004 and within 30 seconds I had an English speaking lady on the phone. The problem was quickly registered and I was told a technician would call me. That happened two hours later. He asked if I was home and if so he would be at our house in five minutes (up beyond Competat at Canillas de Albaida). He came with a new router and it was up and running perfectly within 10 minutes, at no charge to us. A very helpful man who even spoke quite good English.
We pay a very few euros more a month for our package compared with other services we have seen, but the peace of mind we achieve from having a reliable internet, also for hassle-free TV, is worth every cent. I am very satisfied with Movistar’s services. The speed at which our dead modem/router problem was solved is just outstanding.

Can anyone tell me where I can buy proper free range eggs. By free range I mean the chickens spend some time outdoors. I know the supermarkets have a version of fresh campo eggs, but I prefer to buy direct from owners if possible.
I have been buying my eggs from a Spanish man in the campo, who assured me my eggs came from country local chickens. I have since found out the chickens do live locally in the campo, but never leave the shed, to me that’s not free range.

Rentals- New regulations for holiday rentals

Regarding letting out a property for holiday rentals, I have read that some rural areas are exempt from the new law.
Our property is in Torrox campo, does anybody have any solid advice on this yet and if our area is exempt?

Recommendation – Opticians

My glasses from Specsavers broke so when in Velez-Malaga, I dropped into Morales Opticos, near the new covered market

(across the road opposite the two large pound shops on the main road

into Velez-Malaga with the tram line on it).

I asked if they could be repaired and she said it would take half an hour. I went back and they were perfect and had been cleaned – FOR NO CHARGE. She wouldn’t even take a tip. Margaret

To the person asking the whereabouts of extra virgin coconut oil,

these days just about all health -shops will stock it ,also Iranzo’s in Nerja

has it, although it may seem expensive the benefits are pretty miraculous,

look on YouTube and be prepared to be amazed ,unless of course you

know about it. Alzheimers ,cancer ,fybromyalgia, M.S. and just about everything

else but death. Dr Mary Newport is a great introduction to helping

reverse Alzheimers. She says it works for approx 50% of sufferers.

Guide “Blog” for the Blind…

Do you know anyone with low vision or are blind?

Over two years ago i started to write a blog aimed primarily at expats living in Spain, “The Expats Window.” At that time i estimated that there were approx. 34000 blind or vision impaired British and German expats living in Spain and there was a distinct lack of support available. The 34000 excludes other foreign nationals. Over time the readership of the blog has steadily increased. Not surprisingly the greatest number of hits are from the USA but Spain is 4th behind the UK and Ukraine!!

There are light-hearted as well as the more serious articles with information about the latest research into treatments for eye diseases such as Macula Degeneration and Retinitis Pigmentosa. The Blind Expats Window is a platform for entertainment, information and discussion. I am continuously looking for new contributions especially with local (Spanish) interest for posting and of course new readers. Most people who are officially registered as Blind have some vision, in that i include myself, and by various means manage to read albeit sometimes with difficulty.

I only ask if anyone out there know of someone who fits the bill please let them know about the Blind Expats window. I look forwars to many more hits and contributions from Spain.

Relaxed and fun beach exercise in Nerja –

This is open to any level and it’s free of charge.

We (Sally & I) will be on Playazo Beach tomorrow, Wednesday, 24 February, for warm up, general & circuit exercise, warm down and stretching. So please come along and get started on energising you and working your body.

There’ll be more sessions too, depending on demand, both on Playazo and Burriana Beaches in Nerja.

We’ll be in front of the large car park (the one with road access) on the beach side at 6 pm.

Coach Excursion to Cordoba Patios.

Please come and join friends of Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar on a 2 day/ 1 night coach excursion to see the Festival of the Cordoba Patios.

This is a contest of patios and crosses that was first started in 1918, where house owners of the city decorate their homes with beautiful flowers and plants in order to win the prestigious awards presented by the municipality.

The patios are in various parts of the city, close to the Jewish quarter and Cathedral and the finest example is found in the Palacio de Viana.

The first day you will stop for breakfast on the way to Cordoba where you will arrive at approximately 11.00h. You will check in to the 3* Hotel Selu, which is situated about a 10 minutes walk to the Cathedral. The rest of the day is free to discover the city and have dinner.

After breakfast on the second day there will be a guided tour in English of the patios, after which there will be free time to have lunch and the coach will depart from Cordoba at 16.30h. Ticket price for a double room 95 Euros per person, single room 115 Euros available at the Centre. This includes the hotel on a bed and breakfast basis, guided tour, coach and insurance. Proceeds for fundraising. Departure times Viñuela (Football Pitch) 7.10h, Algarrobo (Lidl) 7.35h, Caleta (vets) 7.40h, Torre del Mar (Bus Station) 7.50h.

What’s On The 8th Art Walk in Cómpeta!
