Recommendation – Needed Lawyer

What’s on Local animal charities march for change

The chant ‘No perreras más protectoras’ (no dog pounds, more refuges) rang out in Rincon De La Victoria on the sunny morning of Saturday 20 February, when more than 60 supporters from local animal rescue groups came together to campaign for change in the often cruel way animals are treated here in Spain. In particular they would like to see the kill policy in perreras being abolished and the perreras being replaced with protectoras which care for the welfare of the animals.

The supporters, many with their own dogs and carrying placards with pro animal messages, gathered at the Plaza de Ayuntamiento in Rincon De La Victoria and after a minute of silence in respect of lives lost moved off along the Paseo Maritimo accompanied by the Guardia Civil.

The march received a lot of attention from people along the route with onlookers taking photographs and applauding the supporters and their cause. One Guardia officer is quoted as saying that he would be willing to carry a banner as he believed in what the protesters were saying but unfortunately he was not allowed to.

The supporters taking part were from Animal Defense Action, Tail in Torrox, APARiV in Rincon de la Victoria and Axarquia Animal Rescue.

Everyone can help to make more and more people aware of the situation in the dog pounds and the cruelty inflicted on animals as another march has been arranged in Torre del Mar, for Saturday 5 March meeting at El Faro (the lighthouse) at 11.30am for 12. Please come along and show your support.

What’s on Coach Excursion Madrid, Aranjuez and Toledo

Tuesday 15th through Saturday 19^th March – Coach Excursion to Madrid, Aranjuez and Toledo. Please come and join friends on a 5 day coach excursion starting in the Torre del Mar area. The first day you will travel to Madrid, the capital of Spain, stopping on the way to purchase breakfast and lunch. The coach will arrive late afternoon at the 4* Senator Spa hotel in Madrid in time for dinner.

Wednesday, after breakfast at the hotel, you will have a free day to discover Madrid and a Tourist bus ticket is in included. A day to see the Royal Palace, visit the Prado Museum, Temple of Debod, Plaza Mayor, Gran Via, Retiro Park and much more. Dinner will be provided at the hotel.

Thursday, after breakfast, you will join the coach to visit El Valle de los Caidos (Valley of the Fallen), built on the instructions of Francisco Franco, to honour and bury those who fell during the Spanish Civil war. The construction started in 1940 and was completed in 1959 and there will be a guided tour. After the visit you will join the coach to go to the town of Aranjuez, which has been one of the Royal Estates of the Crown of Spain since the time of Philip II in 1560. There will be free time to stroll through the beautiful gardens and purchase lunch after which there will be a guided tour of the beautiful Royal Palace. You will then join the coach for the drive to the city of Toledo for dinner at the 4* Hotel Eurostars Toledo where you will stay for 2 nights.

Friday, after breakfast, there is a free day to discover Toledo, known as the “Imperial City”, where there is a beautiful Cathedral, El Greco museum and much more. There is also a small tourist train which takes you around the city with beautiful views. You return to the hotel for dinner.

Saturday, after breakfast, you will join the coach for the return journey stopping on the way to purchase lunch. Ticket price 419 Euros per person in a double room, single room 476 Euros. This includes the coach, hotels on a half board basis, tours, guides, entrance fees, tourist bus ticket and insurance. Deposit 100 Euros and final payment due end of February. Proceeds to fundraising. Departure times Viñuela (Football Pitch) 6.45am, Algarrobo (Lidl) 7.15am, Caleta 7.25am, Torre del Mar (Coach Station) 7.30am.

Recent Death of a Husband – Advice & Help Needed Please

Funeral arrangements for Brian Lynch who died very suddenly on Friday 19th. February.

Brian will be at the chapel of rest Nerja at 2p.m. on Monday for a humanist service.

The chapel of rest is on Avenida Pescia beside the cemetery

and next to the petrol station. Parking is very difficult in this area and parking at El Puente might be a good idea as we shall be dropping in there after the funeral to raise a glass or two.

Hope to see you all there and GINS tee shirts will be most welcome.

We would like to inform all our friends and benefactors of Lux Mundi , Fuengirola that due to the changes in road usage by the town hall, from the 1st of March, we are changing the opening times.

To avoid the risk of people getting fines for coming by car to Lux Mundi at the wrong time we are now going to open earlier and therefore close earlier unless we have special events in the late afternoons and evenings. But for those who use cars to bring donations to the Centre, collect equipment or make use of our services there is free access by vehicles from 9am until 11am, the rest of the day it is only allowed to authorised vehicles.

Permanent home needed for Truka

Dog abandoned in the campo 6 months ago. I took her in on a temporary basis for someone who intended having her but unfortunately I was let down. Truka is 2/3 years old, I have had her spayed and vaccinated. She is very good natured, well mannered, gentle and intelligent. She gets on very well with my four dogs and five cats. Unfortunately I am unable to keep her due to personal circumstances.

Response – Life Certificate

I have a life certificate sent to me yearly from the council I worked for. They say as they know I live abroad it is necessary. If I changed my address to a UK one apparently it would be random.
Anyway I take it to my local Spanish bank and the manager signs it free of charge. I then return it to the pensions dept it came from.

The banks have ripped you off – explanation from the UK

In May 2015 financial regulators around the world (including the UK) imposed fines on six banks totalling about £2 billion because they were fixing foreign exchange rates. It does not matter if you did not bank with them as they set the market rates. You have almost certainly been affected by their actions but you could not possibly have known about it. As a result, you would be entitled to compensation.

The banks have been fined by the financial regulators for fixing foreign exchange (FX) rates between 1 January 2008 and 15 October 2013. FX rates are used not only when you transfer money but also when money invested on your behalf is used. Every investment (e.g. pension, endowment mortgage, ISA or investment fund etc.) uses the FX rate when they buy stock or bonds in any company or country that is not based in the UK, e.g. US bonds or shares in Coca-Cola, Renault and Shell.

Therefore you can apply for compensation if between 1 January 2008 & 15 October 2013 you:

1) transferred money from the UK to Euros e.g. bought a house or transferred a pension

2) had a pension or any other kind of investment (except premium bonds).

I would like to recommend to you all, a dentist my wife and I have used in Torrox Costa.

The practice is within the Clinica Europa and his name is Dr Michael Mannish.

My wife had used the practice before me and as I had been looking for a dentist for some time I went along to speak with Dr Mannish and make an appointment.

Having had a very poor experience with a dentist in the area and having experienced some grubby and sometimes dirty premises, over staffed with front desk personnel I did not know what to expect what I would find at Clinica Europa.

I was very pleasantly surprised to meet Dr Mannish and his assistant Manuela and found them both to be friendly and very professional on our first meeting.

Over the weeks that followed Dr Mannish repaired two teeth I had damaged placing a crown on one and rebuilding another.

The procedures were pain free handled professionally and very efficiently by both Dr Mannish and Manuela.

My wife and I are both retired army people, my wife with 12 years service and myself with 36 years as a soldier and officer with a requirement to attend dentists both civilian and military twice yearly for checks and if required treatment so we both feel confident to make comments on what we have seen and experienced throughout the years so, therefore without fear of contradiction we know Dr mannish and Manuela are amongst the best in their chosen profession!

Nerja Foreigners Department informs that we have had to put a new date for the meeting for the preparing of Residents Day. We apologize for the inconvenience. The meeting will now be on Tuesday 1^st March at 10:30 am at the Meeting Room, Salon de Actos, second floor of Nerja Town Hall.

This year, Residents Day will be on Sunday 17^th April in the square Plaza de España behind the Town Hall. Any association, club and others can participate.

Additional Information re Nerja Residents Day :-

Nerja Foreigners Department will celebrate their annual Residents Day on Sunday 17^th April 2016. This day is a tribute dedicated to foreigners who live or spend some time in the lovely town of Nerja.

Residents Day will take place in the square Plaza de España behind the Town Hall. Stands offering their information or products will open to the public from 12 midday to 5 pm. There will be bars and a stage with music, dancing and entertainment during all day up to 5pm.

All Foreign or Spanish associations, clubs, magazines, press, radios, cultural groups, book writers, painters, artists, animal protection or related with animals, medical centres, natural therapies or related with health, typical products of Nerja, the Axarquia or Malaga area, are welcome to participate in this event.

Participating is free. You just have to buy a specific white or beige gazebo tent. You can also have a bar (only 8 bars). The Town Hall will provide a table and 4 chairs for each stand and bars.

There are two types of gazebo tents:

1) Tent with loose poles to be placed by numbers, approx 50 €;

2) Tent with accordion type poles, more simple to install, approx. 80 €. After, you will keep the tent for yourself.

We will give details of where to buy the tent.

Participating stands will have free parking at the Town Hall underground parking in Plaza de España during all day.

In case of rain, the event will be postponed to the following Sunday, 24^th April.

Rental Needed 3 weeks n Torrox Costa June – July 2016

Have you eaten at Paco’s new restaurant on Torrox Costa? He’s opened a second Bar Choto Playa No. II just past the turn off for camping El Pino sign on the left hand side of the N340 going towards Nerja. It’s called Venta Peñoncillo and he’s installed a wood oven for slow cooked oak smoked pork, ribs and cochinillo asado and has a barbecue outside. No one suggested Marbella Apple Store and my attempts to contact them were not successful .
Local shops with Spanish technicians quoted 80-100 euros for my iPad and various people recommended different shops in Nerja

All seem to want the machine for days as they apparently strip it down , find the exact screen required, then order it , and later fit it ….Monday seems a good day to take it in and you might get it back by the week end .! ..

We want to remind you our next concert on Saturday 20th in Ventana Abierta, this time with a Duo who is having a resounding success in the Malaga area. They have recently been part of the Malaga Jazz Festival 2015, and have performed in neighboring Velez-Malaga.

The Marie LeBone Duo offers a voyage through musical themes arising from the merging of two of the 20th century’s great cultural achievements: Jazz and Cinema. It is not surpriing, indeed, that the first film to include sound, circa 1927, was The Jazz Singer. Since then, this relationship has resulted in a wealth of unforgettable works, enthralling audiences throughout the years. This concert will delight music and cinema lovers alike.

Themes will include, among others: Somewhere Over the Rainbow from the 1939 musical The Wizard of Oz; Someday My Prince Will Come, for the Walt Disney 1937 film Snow White; Nature Boy (1947), which is part of the soundtrack of the 2001 film Moulin Rouge; WIld Heart (1993); The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999); Miss Celie’s Blues from The Color Purple (1985); Manha de Carnaval(1959) of the Brazilian film Black Orpheus.

A woman’s wallet was found in El Capistrano Village, Nerja. It contains a driver’s license under the name of Liselotte Schmidt. It is been safely secured in the Capistrano Social Salon. After that it is full for the Easter holidays.

It will then close and re open at the end of the second week in April,

Vegetarian cookery is not just for vegetarians! Explore a variety of tasty yet simple dishes in a practical workshop at Casa Montes Negros, organic farm near Trapiche.

We will be looking at vegetarian and vegan dishes chosen for ease of preparation combined with exciting and interesting flavours from around the world. How to use pulses without it being a load of boring lentils!

Our dishes are based on using local and seasonal produce which is organic where possible.

Lost Dog

My small Spanish dog has gone missing in the Triana area.

Her name is Rosie, she is black and white.

She has 4 white feet, white chest and neck, white tipped tail.

She is a mixture but resembles a Spanish Water Dog.

If you see her she may be frightened so please put a leash on her.

She is chipped and is 16 years old but sprightly.

Litter to Home

I know we are suffering from burn out when it comes to saving animals here in Spain but what can we do about these six puppies born a few weeks ago on the hill above Torrox/Nerja and likely to be dumped somewhere. The owner speaks of selling them in a pet shop but I am told this is not allowed. The other option is the place near Malaga that the camposinas resort to where I’m told if they aren’t sold in a week they are killed.

I have a car, so can travel.

I am a fitness trainer living on the Costa. I would like to start several classes.

I teach water aerobics, boot camp, yoga and a class called Fall proof, which teaches you exercises to strengthen and add flexibility to your body so that you avoid falling. I also offer private 1 to 1, or small group exercise sessions.

Recommendation – The Buddha Restaurant

Been twice now to the Buddha Restaurant. The food is so very very good, the best Indian restaurant we have ever visited in the area. The food is fragrant. There is a lunchtime menu for 8 euros which finishes at 4.00pm, even available on Saturdays The staff are from Nepal and are extremely polite and friendly. The Buddha is located on the main road at Penoncillo adjacent to the motor bike shop. We cannot recommend them highly enough.

If you like Indian food you will not be disappointed. Do try it.

The roots of this art lie deep in the history of civilisation, dating back to an era when only a favoured few were literate, and shared their good fortune by reading aloud great stories, myths, legends, plays and poems. Dramatised readings demand skill on the part of the narrators and actors plus the listeners themselves to attain that wondrous quality of acceptance which Samuel Coleridge called “the willing suspension of disbelief”
“I have always loved stories” says our director, Peter Burch, “and this performance is part of an experiment to determine the future potential of this medium from an acting and audience viewpoint . I have taken a short story, written by Roald Dahl (part of his “Tales of the Unexpected”) and essentially adapted and staged it as a dramatised reading, enhanced by selected music links and appropriate sound effects. What’s on Camino

We have been told by our local tourist office and town hall that the Camino is closing for the whole of March and hopefully re opened for April to be run by a private company, although no one knows who it will be !!!! There is supposed to a charge of 10€ but all this is speculation

Tomorrow we are going to see the town hall of Ardales who at the moment is responsible for the running of the Camino and hopefully we will find out for definite what is going on.

Tuesday 15^th through Friday 18^th March – Excursion to Madrid. Please come and join friends on a 4 day excursion via train to Madrid. I have had a wonderful massage with Linda Bogaert in Torrox Costa last week. Linda did a great job! I felt deeply relaxed afterwards and could feel the positive effect during days.

Talk Radio Europe

Due to continuous interference on existing frequency in the Axarquia area, TRE recently launched the new 105.5fm frequency. However the launch of this new frequency is still a work in progress.

The time delay mentioned in a previous post when driving between Nerja and Malaga is due to the fact the new frequency is being sent via an internet stream which travels half way round the world before reaching our radios causing a delay of some 30 seconds.

When driving the signal automatically bounces between TRE’s 105.5fm and 91.5fm frequencies whichever is the stronger.

In order to solve this problem, TRE will be installing a new piece of equipment which will replace the internet stream.

This new unit will eventually mean no more delays and no more interruptions in the signal, and also a local advertising option for local businesses at local prices. However the new unit needs to be tested and tweaked and whilst this is happening you may still experience annoying interference and breaks in transmission.

TRE apologises for the inconvenience, but we believe all will be sorted

over the course of next week.

Spanish Driving Test – easily done…..

I took my Spanish driving test in English about 6 years ago and arranged everything through AutoEscuela Nerja. They sold me a rules of the road book in English and I was able to practice on their computers in English. I only had to ask for the written test in English when I got to the testing room at Trafico in Malaga. But the practical test was all done in Spanish so I was glad my instructor had put me through the paces in Spanish around the streets of Malaga beforehand. Good luck with the tests.

Recommendation – Driving Licence Renewal –

(Note – this is not taking the actual Driving Test Examination)

To the person who is looking for a driving licence test in English. No doubt some of the staff at the test centres will speak English but don’t be afraid if they don’t.

The test consists of the simplest medical exam (blood pressure, eyesight, hearing etc) and a hand/eye coordination test taken on a computer. If you have no Spanish all will be revealed with gestures and pointing!

What’s on Re: Caminito Del Rey

It is said that the Caminito will be privatised on 1st April and a lot of people I’ve spoken with want to do this walk before then. However, although entry to the walk is free it seems that they are finding it impossible to book a place via the usual website. I have just done the walk with a company that charged 8 euros per person and got us in within a week (entry and guide only). Also there is an agency in Nerja offering entry and guide plus transport to and from El Chorro/Ardales for 30 euros.

We’re learning Spanish in the “Academia de Idiomas Torrox “ and are very pleased with our teacher, Maria Nieves. She is doing her very best to take away our fear to talk in Spanish and she teaches us the verbs and other grammar to improve our basic knowledge.

We would like to have even more conversations in Spanish and that’s why we’re organizing an “intercambio” Spanish-English.

Some of us are native English speakers and the others speak English as well.
