Have you ever said, “Spain has beautiful beaches, but look at all the trash?”  I have!

LET’S do something about it!

Calling all clean beach lovers…Join me this Saturday at 1000 at the lighthouse entrance on Torrox Costa to pick up trash from the beaches.  BRING trash bags, rain gear, and money for a snack at one of the chiringitos after.  All are welcome.  Stay for as long or as short as you wish.

Please bring you ideas about other beaches that need help.

Contributing to a positive landscape is not only good for the land but is beneficial to your health and wellbeing.

If you arrive late, just go a bit further east or west and hopefully you’ll find some other Beach Angels.

Talk Radio Europe.

A few weeks ago I started to get Talk Radio Europe back on my car radio after an absence of over a year due to the near continuous breakthrough of another station which made it impossible to listen to this station when on the move, now I can get TRE all the way from Malaga to Nerja ( on the A7).

The only problem now is that the program being broadcast repeats sections of itself every minute or so.

I have put this down to TRE having more than one transmitting aerials that are not synchronised. This repeating sections glitch does not occur on my radio at home or on their web broadcast, its only in the car.

Am I the only one getting this glitch, is it my car radio on the blink or are there others out there being driven slowly insane.

I will copy the responses to TRE.

We recently stayed at Casa Magel while visiting the Caminito, as well as the area’s other attractions: Lobo Park, El Torcal and the Fuente de Piedra.  Maggie and Elio were very generous with their time in obtaining tickets for the Caminito as well as knowledgeable about the area.  Our room was spotless and Maggie’s breakfasts firstclass – and very good value.

Interesting to note that the BBC are only looking to interview people who would intend to vote to leave the EU, and those who have no interest in the outcome of the vote.

It seems they are not interested in the views of those who would vote to stay in the EU.

Justice or Not ?

You ask the question if you should pay for a Police officers incompetence, but in fact you are not. Assuming the fine for the offence was €500 at the time of the offence, then you are paying for your action of speeding, not his action of giving you the wrong amount. However all is not lost, if you want to argue. Getting up the nose of the police though is possibly not wise.
You could ask to see the evidence you were committing an offence that warrants a €500 fine.
You could write back asking if there was a 50% discount on the €500 for prompt payment, you gave evidence of prompt payment so if there is then you only owe €150.
You could ask which legal statute allows them to reissue a fine that has already been paid in a previous financial year. If they can quote the statute then you will need to pay, but I suspect they can’t do it.
In fact you could make them work so hard for the money they give up, but there is the risk they will remember you and take the “arrogante inglés” down at the next opportunity.

It is quite true that charcoal used indoors can be dangerous! only recently a couple died because they took their BBQ inside their caravan  died as a result from the toxic fumes from the charcoal! so not to be recommended at all to burn charcoal indoors at all.

Wanted – Low wattage bayonet bulb

During the storms a couple of weeks back the lightning blew up a number of our light bulbs, one being in my UK Tiffany light. I always prefer to use a low wattage bulb but cannot find the bayonet fitting ones here. I have looked in Dunnes (who don’t seem to stock them) and Russells (they only had the old 100w ones) and a number of Chinese bazaars to no avail. I am looking for a small (equivalent to ‘candle’ style and size) low wattage (around 8w) bulb if anyone can help? Justice or Not ?

In April 2015 I was pulled up by the police for a motoring offence, “fair cop governor” as I was guilty of the offence.                                                                                   I was fined on the spot, 200 euros reduced by 50% if paid within 20 days.                 This I paid within the deadline.                                                                                             My life went on.                                                                                                                                   In September 2015 I received a fine for the same offence this time for 500 euros less the 100 I had paid.                                                                                                                I appealed to the traffic authorities and received a reply in January 2016 to the effect that the policeman who gave me the fine way back in April 2015 had made a mistake and the fine should have been 500 euros, not the 200 euros I was originally fined.                                                                                                                                                     Is this Justice?  Should I have to pay for a policeman’s incompetence?  AC.

Please can kind people in DigameLand tell me , and others who might need to know, what can be done with an iPad or phone  when the glass is shattered in one corner but the machine still works .

( I have stuck sellotape over it to keep everything in place )

Can they be repaired ? Do you have to go back to Apple in Marbella ?

A word of warning… Archez Parking

Today I was fined for parking by the recycling bins in Archez by a

motorcycle policeman while I did the recycling.

I was on the wrong side of the road facing the wrong way as there

were several cars parked there also, maybe that was it.

The policeman was very polite.

Inheritance Tax.
Has anyone who paid the increased non-resident inheritance tax had it refunded in line with the European ruling?  I have read all the information online etc so I only want to know if anyone who has applied has had it back.
The legal representative who dealt with all the paperwork etc when someone dies, including the inheritance tax has told me “Nobody has got any money back from the tax office . I think they will never
pay this amount back”,

when I questioned if there had been any progress in claiming the tax back.
I have searched online and there are lots of reviews online for certain companies who have dealt with the refunds, however I am always weary of websites who have numerous recommendations praising their service as we all know this data can be manipulated.
I am hoping that Digame can come to the rescue once again with genuine experiences.  All replies via Digame Extra please.

Recommendation – Warning….

I would be happy to be proved wrong but I have read that using

charcoal indoors can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

We all know it is important to keep your computer updated. Many Windows(Win) users set Win Updater to run automatically and have no problems. Good for them. If you are not one of these lucky users there is a solution. Are you unable to do Win Updates on Win XP/Vista/7/8? Or does it take all day if you can even get Win Update to work? This is not unusual, especially if you have a less than optimal internet connection. I now have a tool that allows me to bypass the waiting line and connect your computer to the Microsoft Updater server immediately to do your Win Updates, downloading and installing them without any delays! (“Optional Updates” not included.) This is especially handy if you are forced to re-install your older version of Win and have years of updates to catch up on. In this case it can take many hours just for Win Updates to generate the list of updates available, then another longer period to download and install them. The price is just 10 to 20 euros, depending on how far behind your computer is. For another fiver I can install a Win 10 upgrade blocker, preventing the upgrade and stealth downloading of Win 10 install files without your permission and blocking the annoying  upgrade nag popups and taskbar icon. Recommendation Kindling

I have found that BBQ charcoal works brilliantly for starting a fire and works out very cheap. Hope this solves the problem of lighting your fire.

I too have found it hard to acquire any good kindling
I now use fire lighters from Mecadona stores 0.80€ a box
I find one strip is more than enough to get the largest of olive wood to light in our wood burner
One box will light 8 times
Cheaper than kindling

We always used to look out for old palletts and then chop those up for kindling, but it was quite a lot of work. We now save all cuttings from the garden (vines, trees, bougainvillea etc …. not oleander which is poisonous to burn) and leave them for the year to season and burn them the next. At one time a neighbour used to save us all his fruit and olive tree cuttings, so it may be worth asking around as they are only burned otherwise. Barbara

This white little cutie of 2,5 month needs a loving home. We found her in an empty pool with no chance of getting out there by herself. Services – Head Lamp Conversion

I couldn’t find any headlamp converters anywhere in Spain or France prior to taking a Spanish reg car to the UK 4 years ago. No problem though, they are available when you get off the ferry at motor-spares shops. Halfords will even help you to fit them correctly.
Short term use of headlamp converters should be ok. However, I was travelling France and Spain for a year recently, in a Transit based Motor home with headlamp converters stuck on.

Back to the UK for MOT and on removing said stick-ons the plastic headlamp cover was damaged. Tiny stress type marks, some on the inside of the cover. The MOT tester said it was a borderline pass this time. He’s seen it before where converters have been in place for a long time.

The plastic covers get very hot, especially on full beam and the stuck-on converter acts as an insulator in that area and the heat builds up enough to cause damage. Of course, this doesn’t happen with glass headlamps!

The easy way to remove converters is to switch full beam on and the heat softens the glue so they can be peeled off. Then allow the cover to cool before removing the residual glue, carefully, with WD40. Then wash the WD40 off,

Since the sad demise of the extremely talented David Bowie we will be holding a tribute to his music and his life at the AliOli bar in Competa on Friday 19^th February.

We keep looking but can’t find any, even where we get our logs they sold us a bag of what they called “fire starter wood” but it is not really kindling and is very hard work to get the fire going with it.

Headlight Converters

Tiny One Needs Home

 

This white little cutie of 2,5 month needs a loving home. We found her in an empty pool with no chance of getting out there by herself. Because of her poor condition she had to stay with the vet for a week. Back to strength she now is in a foster home, but cannot stay there for long. Leaving the EU

In response to the questions with regard to the UK leaving the EU:

Nobody can give you firm answers as no-one knows how it will play out.  It will be a step into the unknown.  How well it will work out depends on many things, not least how acrimoniousness the ‘divorce’ gets.  For what it’s worth here are some of the issues and my opinions.

1.  Residence.  Spain encourages immigration from self supporting people from outside the EU, so I think it is highly unlikely that any of us will loose our residential status.  But if you haven’t got permanent residence it may become harder to get in the future.  This  may be the time to consider your status and regularize if need be.

 

2. 2.  Work permits.  If you work I would have thought it highly likely you would need to get some sort of work permit in the future.
3. 3.  Health cover.  If you have a green card through contributions you should be fine, if you have one on the pensioners ‘S1’ arrangement I am not sure what will happen.  Possibilities:
4. a) England and Spain will reach a new agreement and all will continue as now
5. b) those of us currently with green cards will retain them but there will be no new S1s
6. c) All reciprocal arrangements will be cancelled and we will be left without cover in which case our options are

c1.  Pay for private health insurance

       c2.  Some areas of Spain have allowed a limited ‘buy in’ to the health service, they may extend this

I think we just have to hope for the best, there are a lot of us and presumably neither country will want the chaos that will ensue from just cutting us loose.

But in particular the EHIC will probably cease to exist for UK residents in it’s current form,  so if you are here part time and rely on that you may well need insurance (as will all holiday makers)

4.  Pensions.  Our state pensions increase annually as if we were in the UK.  It will be entirely up to the UK & Spain whether or not  they negotiate to continue this.  e.g. UK pensions do not increase in Canada, but they do in America.

5.  Exchange rates.  Current popular opinion seems to be a much weaker pound, at least in the short term, so fewer Euros for your pension.

Of course a weaker pound means if you decide to sell up and go back your Euros will convert to more pounds.

6. Driving licences.  You can exchange a current UK licence for a Spanish one, if you plan to stay and haven’t done that this may be the time as it may not apply if we leave the EU, you may have to take a test.
7. Wills.  The new EU legislation which allows us to make UK law wills in Spain will continue to apply as it is not restricted to citizens of EU countries.

So, if the UK leaves it seems likely to me our ‘place in the sun’ will still welcome us but we will have to pay more for the privilege.

Perhaps this is the time to look at how you live here and get on and regularise your situation while we are still EU citizens and things are a bit easier.  Hope this helps (sorry it’s so long )

I would just like to make it clear that we ourselves do not hold tickets for the Camino Del Rey.

We can, the same as any other person, go to our local tourist office and apply for tickets for the walk. We have to take the passport number and personal details of those who want to do the walk, we then go back 2 days before the walk is due to collect the stamped papers that will allow you to do the walk. Each person has to have their passports or identity cards with them to prove who they are before they take the walk.

We as a business offer to do all the paperwork for our clients, we do not make any profit from this service.

We think that a 2 night B&B stay with nice food and wine in lovely peaceful surroundings is worth 100€, we offer to try to get tickets as an incentive.

All our clients have been extremely satisfied with their stay at Casa Magel and we welcome future clients, whether we get them tickets or not.

Does anyone know of a person who really can repair washing machines. We had 2 persons coming now. They both were asking 30-50 euro’s just to come to look at it and then say they can’t repair it… wanna give it one more try as the problem doesn’t seem to be that difficult. The machine is only leaking water, further it is working very well.

What’s on – El Camino del Rey / Caminito del Rey.

This is a great opportunity to visit and walk this famous, historical and beautiful Camino.

I have done this before and will be doing it again.

What’s on Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar –                                              Excursion to Gibraltar Feb 18th

Thursday 18^th February- Coach Excursion to Gibraltar. Why not join Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar and visit Gibraltar, a chance to take a cable car to the top of the Rock, see the unique Barbary Apes.  Visit the upper Rock nature reserve, where you will find the historic tunnels dating from 1779-1783 and St. Michael´s Cave.  Both of these have guided tours.  In the town can be seen the Gibraltar Museum, Government House and in the Southern area are key historical sites. All information may be obtained from the tourist office, or an excellent alternative way of seeing the sights is by hiring a taxi, whose drivers are very knowledgeable and will explain the interesting, historical life of the Rock.  It is also an opportunity to purchase duty free Items and typical English items of food, etc. from the Morrisons super market. Ticket price 12 Euros available at the Centre.  Proceeds for fund raising.  Departure times Puente don Manuel (Hotel Romero) 6.45am, Algarrobo (Lidl) 7.15am, Caleta 7.20am and Torre Del Mar (Bus Station) 7.30am. Wednesday 24^th February – Coach Excursion to Science Park Granada & Sacromonte Museum.  Please come and join friends and visit the interesting Science Park in Granada, built in 2004 by Ferrater Jimenez Brass. There are several exhibition spaces where you can better understand the world we live in, check physical phenomena such as gravity, the motion of the earth and carry out scientific experiments relating to meteorology, geography and astronomy.

Should you choose to visit the planetarium (entrance 2Euros not included) you can visit the Astronomical Observatory that has the 75cm telescope for observing the universe. You can also climb the observation tower 50 m high, where there is a full view of the City of Granada and the surrounding country side. There is also a tropical Butterfly enclosure and a Giant Chess game.

There will be plenty of time for you to purchase lunch either in the Park or at one of the restaurants close by, after which you will join the coach at 3pm for the short trip to the Sacromonte Caves‘ Museum located in the Barranco de los Negros region of Granada, opposite the Alhambra, where there will be a guided tour. In this Ethnographic Museum, through its exhibitions you will learn about the culture, nature and history of this unique environment. It recreates life in the caves, living conditions and trades of its inhabitants, basketry, the forge, pottery and weaving. You also learn the history of flamenco from its origins to the present day.

E.U. Referendum (1)

Dear Digamites,

The press is full of rhetoric about the forthcoming referendum about whether or not we should leave the EU.  Whatever your view there is no escaping the fact that this may well impact on reciprocal agreements concerning pensions and health care.

There are arguably 2 million expats in mainland Europe of which most are resident in Spain.  I have written to both the MP in my old constituency in the UK and the Prime Minister’s office asking them to outline how leaving the EU would affect us expats.  Neither seemed able or willing to let me know and, in fact, my old MP (a Eurosceptic Conservative) made it plain that it was my choice to move to Spain and that I should take my chances.

I would ask all expats to make efforts to get these questions answered and, if unsatisfied, to make their mark by voting in the referendum.

THE PADRON VERY IMPORTANT FOR NERJA.

HELP YOUR TOWN AND REGISTER ON THE PADRON

The Padron, Town Population List, is very important as according to the amount of people registered on the Padron, the Town Hall will receive funds from the Government, approx. 150 € per person per year and the town can have the following services: doctors, health centres, schools, police, firemen, infrastructure, social care. Also Town Hall services such as garbage collection, road cleaning, road lighting, road works, public gardens and staff for the Town Hall. Registering on the Padron is free and it helps Nerja to receive more funds from the Government.

When a town has more than 20,000 persons registered on the Padron, it is on a scale considered as an important town. Consequently, the Government provides more public services and it can have another medical centre, a fire brigade, more schools, a bus station, etc. At present, Nerja has around 22,200 inhabitants on the Padron, of which 6,200 are foreigners, this is a 28%.

Every 2 years foreigners have to renew their Padron and if not they will be deregistered. Nerja Town Hall is very concerned with the Padron as by the end of March, 1,600 foreigners will be taken off the Padron as they have not come to renew their inscription. This will mean losing around 240,000 € funds as well as we could lose a certain number of doctors, police, firemen, teachers and services from the Town Hall.

            Any person staying in Nerja several months in total during the year can register on the Padron. This means coming to Nerja regularly and owning or renting a property. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE RESIDENT holding the green card or sheet. You just need to have the white NIE sheet from the Police Station of Torre del Mar.

REGISTERING ON THE PADRON HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH PAYING TAXES OR FISCAL PURPOSES.

For Padron information please see Jacky at Nerja Foreigners Department on the ground floor of the Town Hall. She speaks several languages, such as English, French, Italian and a bit of German.

REGISTERING ON THE PADRON FOR THE FIRST TIME

To register on the Padron, please go to the Reception of Nerja Town Hall on the ground floor at the left desk, Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 14:00. Bring the following photocopies, which can be made on both sides of a page and if possible, putting several documents together:

• NIE certificate (a white sheet) or Resident certificate / card (a green sheet or card). Please note that bringing the NIE number written on a piece of paper is not valid.
• Passport or Identity Card.
• One of the following documents showing your name and address in Nerja:

A utility bill of electricity, water, telephone, internet, gas; An IBI or any other local tax receipt; a rental contract plus the last payment receipt.

The title deeds (Escritura) with the page where the seller, the owner and the address of the property figures.

An insurance, a bank statement, the tax returns form.

RENEWING THE PADRON EVERY 2 YEARS

 

Foreigners must renew their Padron every 2 years, as they will be deregistered from the population list if the renewal is not made. This will mean a great economic loss for the Town Hall as well as having less services, doctors, police, teachers and general infrastructure. This is the reason why it is so important to be and to continue on the Padron. Only Permanent Residents will renew after 5 years counting from the date shown on their residence card.

When your Padron renewal is due, you will receive a reminder letter asking you to come to the Town Hall. Nevertheless, in case you haven’t received it, to be on the safe side, please contact the Town Hall every 2 years.

PLEASE CHECK THAT YOU ARE STILL ON THE PADRON

You can check your Padron by coming to the Town Hall Reception on the ground floor, at the left desk or to the Foreigners Department. Please make a photocopy of your NIE (the white sheet) or your Residencia (the green sheet or card) and bring it to the office.

 

If recently you have checked your Padron, for the moment, you don’t have to come again until 2 years have passed or if you have received a reminder letter. You can also check by sending an email to extranjeros@nerja.es writing your name, NIE number and address. You will receive an answer in several weeks.

BENEFITS IF YOU ARE REGISTERED ON THE NERJA

PADRON POPULATION LIST

• Reduced membership price at the Municipal Swimming Pool and in all activities of the local Sports Stadium on an annual bond.
• Have a permanent doctor at the Medical Centre if you are a Resident.
• Verano Azul Parking 30 € / month if you have been 1 year on the Padron.
• Carabeo private parking. Bonds given in November & December.
• Monthly deduction at the parking behind the Town Hall. At the moment, there is a waiting list for this parking.
• Register your children at school.
• To buy a car or a motorbike you need to be on the Padron.
• Getting married in Nerja.
• Registering as a common law couple.
• Voting in the Local Elections or even present yourself as a candidate.
• Voting in the European Elections.
• Apply for social care benefits if eligible. For this, you must be on the Padron for a period that can vary from 1 to 5 years.

PENSIONERS OVER 65 YEARS OLD REGISTERED ON THE PADRON WILL ALSO HAVE THE FOLLOWING BENEFITS

• Deductions on the local Verano Azul bus.
• If you are on the Padron and you are a Resident, holder of the green card or sheet, you can apply for the 65 Card, Tarjeta 65 and have deductions for:

Buses to Malaga and other cities of Andalucia, glasses, hearing aids, panic button assistance for persons who are alone or sick, entries to the Picasso Museum, Selwo, etc.

Forms available at Nerja Foreigners Department & at the Pensioners’ Club.

• Apply for the Nerja Town Hall card, Carnet del Mayor, if you have been at least 4 years on the Padron. You can have free swimming pool lessons from October to June. On special fiesta occasions you can go to free lunches offered by the Town Hall. Always limited spaces. Deductions on the local bus. Sometimes certain events at the Cultural Centre have deductions.
  • Be a member of the Pensioners’ Club and go to trips and organized events.

The Junta and  the regional governments have a real interest in encouraging more tourists and money to the area. The Town Hall wishes to make promotion for it on its web-site.  of course is to accepting some rules and/or laws. anyone who wants to offer  tourists accommodation needs a license obtainable from the touristic bureau of Axarquia “CEDER” in Vinuela.  The accommodation has to be approved and meet the required standards of cleanliness, safety  and suitability at which point a licence will be issued for €25. The penalty for failing to register within 3 months is €150,000.00!

Forthcoming Referendum re EU

The forthcoming Referendum regarding leaving the EU could have far-reaching effects on ex-pats here in Spain (and other European countries), in many areas, including exchange rates and healthcare – to name but two!

The British Embassy in Madrid is supporting a campaign led by the Electoral Commission to make British expatriates in Spain aware that they may be able to register to vote in the forthcoming EU Referendum. It seems that very many expatriates don’t realise they may be eligible to vote, and very few are registered to do so.

The Embassy is distributing the attached 8-point guide on how to register. If you have contacts with whom the guide can be shared, or events or venues where the issue can be discussed, then please do.  All that British expats need to do is check their eligibility, and then visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote to make sure they can have their say.

It takes only around 5 minutes – all you need is to have your NI number and your passport to hand, then follow the instructions on the following site:-

Warning ! Bogus Gasmen

A neighbour here in Pago santilla, Torrox (Yesterday near the football stadium) received a visit from 2 Spanish chaps demanding to inspect her gas installation.
On being asked to identify themselves they produced a document purportedly from the Junta de Andalucia, but on being quizzed further about they worked for they jumped back in the car – and sped off!     A foto of the car is attached – beware!

The recently opened ‘Buddha House’ restaurant serves delicious Nepalese
and Indian food. It was such a pleasure to sample the excellent fare
for a second time last night.  I have to spread the word.
‘Buddha House’ is situated in the same place a ‘Route 66’ the Harley
Davidson motorcycle shop on the main road just outside Torrox Costa on
the way to Nerja.
The Owners and staff have a lifetime of Nepalese
experience of running restaurants, one of the family has another
restaurant in Barcelona.
The service is excellent, they are charming people, and the food is gorgeous.

Giving Back: Clean Beaches

The last couple days I have picked up 4 trash bags full of garbage from 1 small beach in Torrox.

Please help me give back to the country of Spain.  Next time you go to the beach, bring a bag with you and collect trash, and dump it in the bins.

Tourist take, residents give.

I know it may be a cultural thing, but cultures can change.

Does anyone know who I would turn to to get signs printed and posted that say something like: “Pack your trash out.”

As I was picking trash up someone came up to me and asked me why I was doing it.  I said, because I like to walk on a clean beach.  He was stunned, saying something to the extent of,  it was not my job, so why would i do it…I believe its everyones job…if you use the beach…keep it clean.  Do you?

Passports & Pictures – Update

A short time ago the subject of where to have your passport photo taken was discussed.  I had mine taken at the small studio near the police station in Torre Del Mar, they looked fine and certainly were the right size.  However, when I presented them at the passport office in London yesterday, they were refused, as the background colour was incorrect.  They are very strict about having the light grey background, so I had to have another set taken. That wasn’t a problem, as there are at least half a dozen photo booths in the building.  If you are going in person to the office, I would recommend getting there at least 20 minutes early, as it takes a while to get through the airport-like security, then reception, before you get your ticket number.  Once you have that, you will have plenty of time to get your photo’s done.  If you are going for a 4 hour turn around passport, remember the 4 hours doesn’t start until you have been through the whole process and paid for your new passport.
