Shrunken Screen in Open Office – Problem Solved!                                           Thanks to everybody who answered my query.  It was simply a matter of using the tiny slide I had never noticed (as I triggered it while typing I was looking at the toolbar and the other half of the screen for an answer).  I feel very stupid but that’s nothing new.

“Don Carlo” is set in 16th century Spain in the court of Philip II.  It is about the Crown Prince who falls in love with a princess only to find his father is going to marry her – thus making her his mother. (Don’t you just love opera!)  A passionate and dramatic opera set to Verdi’s magnificent music.  Not to be missed……

URGENT- Dangerous Dog in La Mata Area, Competa

There is a very large white dog loose again this morning on La Mata Competa.   It has attacked my neighbour, Frank’s dog whilst he was walking it and now he is rushing his badly injured Alsatian cross down to Caleta in an attempt to save it’s life.  This same animal has killed two of my dogs and injured my husband (we are still waiting for the court hearing some 18 months later).  We took the proper legal route and that delay has perhaps cost the life of another beloved pet.  It is essential that all persons who walk their dogs on La Mata be aware that it is not safe to do so until the authorities take some action to protect both.

I am in possession of all the details of this dog and its owner but resist publishing the same at this time as I still, inexplicably, hope that the Spanish authorities will act on behalf of the residents and remove this animal and ensure it can no longer harm any person or pet.

In the meantime we in this neighbourhood must be aware if the danger and not walk our dogs!

Bogus Gas Men

If you Google ‘Bogus gas men Nerja’ you will get many hits and articles.

The main point is that it is up to you, the house owner, to make the appointment for a gas review. If you haven’t arranged a visit then they should never be calling at your house uninvited.

So if someone turns up without a prior appointment made by you, you should turn them away no matter how insistent they are. In the past, we have just told them we don’t have any gas appliances and have refused them entry. I would not hesitate to threaten to call the police and take their photo if they become abusive.

Easy Way to Stop Win 10 Upgrade Nags

Are you are happy with your current Windows system and want to stop the annoying Win 10 Upgrade nag popups, stealth installation of Win 10 files and eliminate the taskbar notice symbol? Here is a tutorial that is very simple to follow, including a tool to do this. It has pics of each step. This tool, The GWX Control Panel, has never given me any problems and includes an Undo function if you decide later to do the Win 10 Upgrade. http://tinyurl.com/hxpuym6

Once done you will be free of the threatening notices that seem to force you into the unwanted upgrade. You will also prevent the download, or remove all the files Microsoft has already snuck into your computer, to prepare it for the upgrade.

As always, make a new System Restore Point before doing any modifications to your system. Here’s how:

On Win 7: Click Start, right click Computer, click Properties, click System Protection from the menu on the far left, click Create then enter a name for the restore point like “pre Win 10 block”, then click the Create button. Wait till you get a confirmation, then click Close.

On Win 8/8.1: Move the pointer all the way to the lower left corner until you see the Start button display, then right click on the Start button. Click System. Click on the System Protection link in the left pane. If prompted by a permission popup, click Yes. Click on the Create button. Enter a name for the restore point like “pre Win 10 block”.Click Create. Wait till you get a confirmation, then click Close.
Note: In all systems the current date and time are added automatically to the restore point.

This info is not an indication that Win 10 is bad, it is only to help those who don’t want it yet.

Pilates is a form of exercise, using breathing and stretching techniques, many similar to yoga and for all ages.  Classes take place in Calle Diputacion, Nerja, opposite the pensioner’s day centre, on the first floor.

Beginners     Tuesday and Thursday      10.30 to 11.30

Intermediate  Monday and Wednesday    6.30 to  7.30

If you are feeling brave and want a more intense workout try the Friday evening class from 6.30 for two hours.

Wednesday 24^th February – Coach Excursion to Science Park Granada & Sacromonte Museum.  Please come and join friends and visit the interesting Science Park in Granada, built in 2004 by Ferrater Jimenez Brass. There are several exhibition spaces where you can better understand the world we live in, check physical phenomena such as gravity, the motion of the earth and carry out scientific experiments relating to meteorology, geography and astronomy.

Should you choose to visit the planetarium (entrance 2 Euros not included) you can visit the Astronomical Observatory that has the 75cm telescope for observing the universe. You can also climb the observation tower 50 m high, where there is a full view of the City of Granada and the surrounding country side. There is also a tropical Butterfly enclosure and a Giant Chess game.

There will be plenty of time for you to purchase lunch either in the Park or at one of the restaurants close by, after which you will join the coach at 3pm for the short trip to the Sacromonte Caves‘ Museum located in the Barranco de los Negros region of Granada, opposite the Alhambra, where there will be a guided tour. In this Ethnographic Museum, through its exhibitions you will learn about the culture, nature and history of this unique environment. It recreates life in the caves, living conditions and trades of its inhabitants, basketry, the forge, pottery and weaving. You also learn the history of flamenco from its origins to the present day.

Ticket price 29 Euros available at the Centre, which includes transport, insurance and entrance fees. All proceeds for fundraising. Departure times Viñuela (Football Pitch) 07.50, Torre del Mar (Coach Station) 08.15, Caleta 08.25, Algarrobo (Lidl) 0830.  Leaving Granada at 17.00 Approx.

Warning of Gas men Nerja

Today on Pueblo Rocio we had a visit from a so called gas inspector?

This Fiesta van with gas inspector stopped outside our villa

The person inside the van did not get out but waved for us to come outside.

He said he was here to check our gas appliances?

This started the alarm bells.

A true inspector would come and ring the bell? when I asked for his ID to check with the gas company or police he drove off at full speed before I could get a pic.

So in Nerja or in the area be aware.

There’s a wonderful new organic shop opened opposite Aldi on the roundabout in Caleta. A huge selection of good priced organic fruit and veg. We have been using them for the last year or more picking up a box from their warehouse in Trapiche. They have eggs, chocolate, olive oil, preserves, marmalade. They make their own vegan icecream and they make sorbets too which are yummy! They are not at the shop at the moment. Check inside and out for any damage caused by storms, wind or electricity failures. Water plants, and anything else you might need.
Perhaps a clean before you arrive at very modest rates also.

Services Wanted–Water Filter Installation

We are hoping that someone in the area (Axarquia) offers installation of water filters. What we are looking for is a system that will filter the water as it comes into the house, in our utility room. This should be a system that will filter all of the water for solids and bacteria. So far all we have found is systems that fit under the kitchen sink and only filter the water there. Recommendation – Replacement Covers etc. for Sun Beds

There is a garden furniture shop in a street close to Malaga Bus station. Sorry, can’t remember the name.  They sell replacement covers and elastic for the sun beds –Tumbonas – frequently used by the beach concessions, however they are not cheap (around €48 each, plus extra for the elastic)  I thinks these may be what you are looking for.  There is a name plate on the beds and if you Google it you can find more info.

They can be bought on line too, but still expensive.

Nerja Cudeca Support Group – Today – Thursday

Reminder that the Nerja Cudeca Support Group meeting is on Thursday 21st January at 11.30

in the Caritas Room at the rear of El Salvador Church on the Balcon.  A warm welcome to anyone who feels that a chat and advice on health matters might be of assistance to them,  a member of their family or a friend.

 

 

Nerja Town Hall Meeting : The Padron

Nerja Town Hall is very concerned with the Padron, population list, as 1,600 foreigners are going to be taken off the Nerja Padron as they haven’t renewed their Padron, which has to be done every 2 years. This implies that if we go under the figure of 20,000 inhabitants registered on the Padron, we will lose services and could have a reduction in police, doctors, firemen, teachers apart from losing a very important amount of money that the central and regional governments give to the town halls according to the population figure of the Padron, which at the moment, in Nerja is of 22,200 persons.

We would like to invite all the press, magazines and radios of the nearby areas to a meeting with the Nerja Town Hall Foreigners Department. It would be on Wednesday, 3rd February at 10:30 am at the Nerja Town Hall, at the Salon de Actos on the second floor. The aim is so you can express our concern in your media and make foreigners know that they have to renew their inscription on the Padron every 2 years. They just have to check with the Town Hall that they are on the Padron.

Also to welcome all newcomers to Nerja who spend several months here to register on the Padron for the first time.

The meeting will last approx. one hour. Please confirm your attendance.

What’s on- FREE Circuit Training Sessions – Competa –  for the rest of January!

Get fit for FREE in 2016!

FREE Circuit Training in January in Competa every Sunday at 10am. Circuit training is a great way to get fit in a fun, group environment. We have 8-10 fitness stations which you stay on for 1 minute at a time before moving on to the next with motivational music to help you exercise. A station may be a core, upper or lower body exercise that you take at your own pace.

Suitable for all fitness levels and adult ages. It will be an held on an outside gym terrace so dress appropriately and bring hydration/water and a towel.  Full instruction will be given by a qualified personal trainer. The session will last an hour and guaranteed to make you sweat! Why not start your new years resolution and get fit in 2016?

We end the session with a tea or coffee and cake. You are welcome to come along and take a look to see what its about and stay for tea and coffee.

What’s on – Concert

 

The Holidays are over and we return to our programming for the second half of the 2015-2016 Season.  Below is a list of upcoming events so you may plan ahead of time.

We wish to widen the scope of our presentations, by including more classical music (instrumental and voice recitals), but also contnuing with jazz, folk, and international music.

We will be offering offer our regular classes and workshops, as well as activities and presentations for children.

You may want to mark your calendar for our upcoming III Festival of Baroque and Ancient Music “La Liebre de Marzo” in March in Frigiliana. In July, the IV “Certamen de Jóvenes Voces del Flamenco”, and in August, the Summer Festival “Nerja, Ciudad Abierta”.  In addition, we will have the III series of exhibitions “Arte en Verano” during the summer months, showcasing local, national and international talent in the visual arts.

 

Our first concert of the year is by the Duo FORASTEROS, voice, guitar and violin by Juanma Alamino and Anne-Laure Kesteman, which includes country, celtic and rock music.  This is the first time this duo from the Costa Tropical performs in Nerja.

Residency

Contrary to John’s post you do need to renew your residencia after five years, the one you get then is permanent.  You go to the same place you got the original.  In Torre del Mar it is the Comsaria de police.  When we did it last year we only needed passports, application form and original residencia. (and copies of course) We then had to take the form we were given to the bank and pay the fee before returning to pick up the card.  A form to download is available here  http://www.ub.edu/uri/Documents/ex18.pdf

 

Note though that this is renewal, to apply in the first place has become more complicated with questions on income and health care being possible.  From what I have heard it varies from place to place so anyone seeking their first residencia may be well advised to go to their local office and ask what they need first.

Open Office Problem

Despite having written four books, dozens of articles, quizzes etc using Open Office for Windows 7, whilst typing away I inadvertently touched a key, or combination of keys, which shrunk my page view to “tiny”.  Nothing I have tried, including using the help menu (no help, are they ever?) will restore it to normal so I can carry on.  The really strange thing is that all my other documents have shrunk as well.  Help!  I’m sure its something stupid, but can’t work it out. Is Page Preview anything to do with it? If it is I can’t find an instruction on how to get out of preview mode. And why would that affect any document other than the one I’m working on?

Recommendation Doctor Laptop – Bouquet 

Dr. Laptop has just given my laptop and my Samsung tablet a thorough service because  they were running grindingly slow. He also backed up my info onto my external hard drive device.

A suggestion for car parking at Malaga airport.

We have used the ‘long stay’ parking at the airport for short or long stays.

It is way down past terminal three and can be booked online.

A shuttle bus takes care of transport at any time.

You must keep the ticket given in the office and their telephone number

when you return to call for the shuttle bus.

Big advantage is that you keep your car keys and no-one else

can use the car, which does happen with some companies.       Tony.

We always use Parking Costa Golf http://parkingcostagolf.com/en/

They will also take you to the port or station in Malaga too.

We like them as they are easy to get to without having to go into the airport complex. You just turn off the main coastal dual carriageway (MA20) at the Leroy Merlin roundabout and it’s the first exit, and then they just on your right. We have used them for a few years and they do not move your car (we check the mileage as some companies take it offisite somewhere else and you find they have done several kms in it in your absence).      Barbara

What’s on at the Cultural Center of Almuñécar  .

Pianist Daniel Fichera returns to the Cultural Center of Almuñécar on Monday, January 25th at 8 p.m. for a piano recital.  The first half will feature Haydn’s Andante and Variations in f minor and 4 pieces by Brahms, including the beautiful Intermezzo in A Major, op. 118 no. 2.  In part of his ongoing performance of the complete “Les Années de Pèlerinage” of Franz Liszt the second half will be devoted to the “Les Années de Pèlerinage”, Book II – Italy including the Sonetto del Petrarca 104 and the “Dante” Sonata. Recommendation Needed – Airport Carparking

I know that I have read several comments in DigamExtra regarding leaving your car at the airport for short and long stay, but I am unable to find any of them now that I want them! Please  Help Connie    

This beautiful girl Connie, was found emaciated and very unwell.
She has been in a foster home where her health has improved enormously. Unfortunately though, she does still have a skin condition which means she can´t mix with the other dogs in the home and she is having to spend long periods in a crate. Understandably she is very bored and her life isn´t good.
Connie desperately needs a foster home where she can move around freely most of the time instead of being cooped up. She also needs a weekly bath.
She is a lovely, friendly gentle girl and would be delighted to be with someone who can spend the time with her that she deserves.
If you have a home without animals, please consider fostering Connie for a while, even just short term would be marvelous. She has been through so much!

Puppies Need a Home   

 Six lovely puppies were abandoned by the roadside in a cardboard box three weeks ago. They were in good condition but frightened as their mother was nowhere to be seen! They were very friendly although frightened of course. We have managed to home three of them and need to find good homes for the remaining three. They are all male and of similar appearance. Scooter to Spain

I wonder if someone could advise me on how to get my 125cc scooter from London to Nerja. If I ride it down myself it’d probably take at least a week and the terrain and weather might be a bit ropey. My last resort will be to take it from Portsmouth to Bilbao on the ferry if it’s affordable then ride it down in the warmer months. Any suggestions welcomed.

She is also a translator for medical issues, car registration etc.

My phone refused to work yesterday afternoon when in the middle of trying to purchase yesterday’s ‘for sales’. I collected the TV – excellent, but couldn’t finalize the purchase of the brown sofa and exercise ball, having sadly missed the opportunity of the outside furniture. More on Warning – Fake Microsoft Warnings

It’s getting more difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff with internet security. One tip I give is…. when you log-in to a site that you have an account with, always input a mistake in the username (or email address) and in the password. The real site will not let you in but a dodgy site will so you can quickly go into reverse and get out. This way they don’t have your username or email address or password!!

Unfortunately if you do this with Apple they may then make you go through the ‘new password route’ which is a pain,

What’s on – Farm Walk through Almond Blossom with Organic Afternoon Tea on 31st January    

Join us for organic afternoon tea and a farm walk on Sunday 31st January at Casa Montes Negros near Torre del Mar. The organic farm is nestled into the foothills of the Sierra Tejeda mountains and with 160 almond trees, January is a wonderful month to head into the countryside to enjoy the beautiful blossom.

The tea is served as a buffet and is inspired by local and seasonal produce, much of it produced on the farm. Tuck into a great selection of home baked cakes (including gluten free ) scones and jam, freshly baked bread with cheese, pickles and chutneys, plus tea, coffee and infusions. Everything is freshly prepared on the day using organic ingredients.

The  (optional) walk takes 1 hour and is of medium difficulty, starting with a walk around the farm and then down to the river before heading back up to the house and through the almond grove. The meeting point is the carpark at El Bar Cruce, Trapiche at 3.30 p.m. Cost 10 euros per person including the walk.

What’s on Thursday 28^th & Friday 29^th January – Coach Excursion to the Alpujarras with Fuengirola Lux mundi.

Please come and join friends on a 2 day excursion to the beautiful Alpujarras.  On the first day you will visit Trevelez, the highest village in the Alpujarras and here there will be a guided tour of a ham factory, where they dry the famous hams which you will be invited to taste.  The visit will be followed by lunch and you will then re-join the coach for a drive through the beautiful country side, passing through the village of Bubion to the picturesque village of CapileIra, where there will be time for coffee and may be you can spoil yourself in the chocolate factory!  Once again you join the coach for your final journey of the day to the 4* Balneario Hotel in Lanjaron, where you will stay overnight and have dinner.

On the second day after breakfast there is free time for you to enjoy pampering yourself with a free visit to the spa, which is in the hotel.  Here you can experience a dynamic bath with water jets or a bubble bath, steam bath, circular shower with massage jets, a pebble walk or a Finnish sauna.  If all that is too much you can take a walk around the village or rest in your room or on the terrace.  Lunch will be in the hotel, after which you will join the coach for your return journey, stopping for coffee in Nerja and you will arrive back in Fuengirola at approximately 20.00h.  Ticket price 162 Euros double room, 177 Euros single room, full board per person, this also includes lunch on the first day, all visits and insurance.  Departure from Bull Ring or Feria Ground 7.30h.

You can start learning this beautiful language on 19th January. The lessons will be on Tuesdays and Fridays from 4.00 to 5.30p.m.

We also offer a special group for beginners, only on Fridays from 12.00 to 13.30. We will start as soon as we have six students.
