We have for many years been supporters of NADFAS (the National Association of Decorative & Fine Arts Societies). Indeed, I am currently the Treasurer of the Fuengirola Branch, Costa del Sol Decorative & Fine Arts Society (Costa del Sol Dfas) and, in that capacity, would like to invite you to attend the February lecture, which is being sponsored by Blevins Franks.

The lecture is entitled:

Years at universities and art organisations in America and on cruise boats. She was an official guide at the British Museum and has published articles on samplers. Her lectures range from the role of the royal mistress in history to more scholarly lectures such as on Frederick the Great of Prussia.

“Three Great Families and their Gardens” is the story of three very different, but hugely successful, families: the Sackville-Wests, the Astors and the Rothschilds. Recommendations – TeAuto in Competa

We were struggling to find reviews for a good bodyshop in the area, and then were recommended to try TejAuto in Competa. We had always taken our car to Velez-Malaga for servicing etc, but wanted somewhere more local as we would be without it a few days. Well, I just picked up my car after a partial respray and I am THRILLED with the result. Tricky colour to match but they have done it perfectly. As good as new. Highly recommended.
Price was exactly as quoted, very friendly staff, Oh and they speak English too.
Hope this is useful for others. They are on the left as one enters Competa.

Restaurants and hotels have Tripadvisor, but there doesn’t seem to be anything like this for reviewing garages.

The TejAuto bodyshop is excellent. We will be using them for servicing, tyres etc from now on, so will post again with our findings.   Rob B

 

 

Recommendation –  Taller Oliver, Torrox Costa

Two days ago my wife suffered a punctured tire whilst driving in the campo above Torrox. As the ground was too unstable to remove the wheel with a standard jack, we contacted Taller Oliver.

Within 30 minutes Oliver had the job done.

When asked about payment, Oliver replied

l would like to recommend Oscar Pinazo for all  sorts of reasons.  He is reliable, arrives on time. speaks English, explains the problem with an appliance and then, looks very methodically for a solution that is most economic.

The recently opened ‘Buddha House’ restaurant serves delishous Tibetan
and Indian food. It was such a pleasure to sample the excellent fare
for a second time last night, that I have to spread the word.
‘Buddha House’ is situated in the same place a ‘Route 66’ the Harley
Davidson motorcycle shop on the main road just outside Torox Costa on
the way to Nerja.
The Owners and staff are all from Tibet and have a lifetime of
experience of running restautants, one of the family has another
restaurant in Barcelona.
The service is excellent, they are charming people, and the food is gorgeous.

This is because many of these scams see people transfer their pension savings into a bad investment that swallows up their cash, or they were simply robbed of their pension by the scammers.

Question – Re Dogs in the Campo

Does anyone out there know if there are any rules and regulations

about letting dogs in the Campo, roam free over other people’s land.

We are troubled by several dogs, all rescued ones, that weren’t local

to us when we bought our property. Now, we have to put up with them

roaming free, and leaving their mess all over the place.

There is also the barking, both day and night.

Is there anything we can do?

A kind lady has approached Action for Animals for help as she has taken in a lovely small, sterilised, female dog, “Laica” who she found shivering on a cold night at the top of Competa Pueblo.

She already has dogs and a number of cats so she cannot keep her much longer.

Do you recognise her? Could you foster her? or offer her a permanent home?

She is small, black and tan, approximately 2 years old, very affectionate and sociable and gets on well with people and other dogs – but not so keen on cats.

She is sterilised, parasite free and would make a wonderful companion – she doesn’t need a lot of space.

Services – Change in Alsa Timetable from 1st March?

When I checked the Alsa timetables for buses from El Morche to Torre del Mar/Malaga for March there is only one bus listed at 10:15. Previously there was quite a full schedule from 7:15 in the morning until 21:25in the evening but this seems to stop on 29th February. Can anyone shed any light on what is happening?

Recommendation- Oscar – Self Closing RCCBs

I would like to second Steve M’s recommendation for Oscar Pinazo and the self closing RCCB’s he fits. Ourselves and four neighbours had them fitted, and after the storm on Friday evening, which would have tripped out some of electrical systems, we all had power the next morning. Recommendation Pellet Stoves

We bought our pellet stove 14 years ago from Bisonte in Velez Malaga.

It is an EcoForest and whilst expensive to buy and install has saved us

so much money in fuel.

It is easy to clean and has required very little in maintenance.

Bisonte are very efficient in dealing with any maintenance required.

I would definitely recommend both Bisonte and EcoForest.

What’s on Torrox Costa Wellness Class

My original ad for this class was published last week.  This is a follow up, with a little more information.

The first class will be held at 1400 this Tuesday, Feb 2.  Torrox Costa, Av de Faro.  For the first class, we will meet at 2 at the Street level in front of the Necropolis and walk to the Playa Chica down below.  If for some reason you are late, just walk down to the little beach which is in front of the ruin.

I do have a release form that I will ask you to sign before attending the class.

I would like to keep the class number at about 10 members.  I currently have only 2 spaces left.  Don’t be shy if you’d like to join.  I will be in Torrox till the 19th of February.   I am developing this class to use when I return to the US.  I’m hoping to help members build a skill set they can use independently in the time I am here.

AAR/RBL joint fundraisers for January… Last Sunday we had our ‘Sunday with a difference’ the trip to Guzman Garden Centre, La Trocha Rastro and then on to Deacons Coin, for an all you can eat Carvery – followed by a day trip to Gibraltar on the 27th, raising a total of 519e to be split between the 2 charities. 259.50e will go into the RBL Benajarafe Poppy Appeal, and 259.50e will go to AAR neutering and puppy milk/food. Recommendation Oscar Pinazo – 

 I’ve just got to recommend Oscar Pinazo for his diligence and knowledge regarding our electrical system that has for the past 14 or so years continually tripped for no apparent reason especially when we decide to travel for any length of time only to return to a very smelly fridge/freezer. Oscar arrived at our property yesterday and installed a ‘overvoltage protection unit’ and ‘Circutor Automatic reclosing RCCB’ in a very professional manner. Last night we had quite a storm accompanied by thunder and lightning and guess what? No trips!!!!!

What’s on –  Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar, Coming Excursion

Tuesday 15th thru Saturday 19^th March – Coach Excursion to Madrid, Aranjuez and Toledo.  

Please come and join friends on a 5 day coach excursion starting in the Torre del Mar area.  The first day you will travel to Madrid, the capital of Spain, stopping on the way to purchase breakfast and lunch.  The coach will arrive late afternoon at the 4* Senator Spa hotel in Madrid in time for dinner.

Wednesday, after breakfast at the hotel, you will have a free day to discover Madrid and a Tourist bus ticket is in included.  A day to see the Royal Palace, visit the Prado Museum, Temple of Debod, Plaza Mayor, Gran Via, Retiro Park and much more.  Dinner will be provided at the hotel.

Thursday, after breakfast, you will join the coach to visit El Valle de los Caidos (Valley of the Fallen), built on the instructions of Francisco Franco, to honour and bury those who fell during the Spanish Civil war. The construction started in 1940 and was completed in 1959 and there will be a guided tour.  After the visit you will join the coach to go to the town of Aranjuez, which has been one of the Royal Estates of the Crown of Spain since the time of Philip II in 1560.  There will be free time to stroll through the beautiful gardens and purchase lunch after which there will be a guided tour of the beautiful Royal Palace.  You will then join the coach for the drive to the city of Toledo for dinner at the 4* Hotel Eurostars Toledo where you will stay for 2 nights.

Friday, after breakfast, there is a free day to discover Toledo, known as the “Imperial City”, where there is a beautiful Cathedral, El Greco museum and much more.  There is also a small tourist train which takes you around the city with beautiful views.  You return to the hotel for dinner.

Apple Mac/iPad/iPhone/Safari Issues

iPad problems
I sent the following to 1958Ian on Thursday to the original posting but noted that Paul at Competa reported the same:
Apple reported it as an issue on Tuesday and have corrected the software but to get your machines to work again you need to clear the web history.
Just go to:
‘Settings’
‘Safari’
Click on ‘Clear History and Website Data’

 

That should sort it although if you’ve saved any automatic log in details for websites it will be lost.     Angela

Also in response to Paul in Competa regarding the iPad/iPhone/Safari Issue, yes this is an update issue which Apple are working on. In the meantime there are a couple of workarounds

On the iPhone/iPad go to Settings and then choose Safari. There you find Safari Suggestions. Just toggle the slider. The Safari Suggestions option on the Mac is under the Safari Preferences under the Search Tab. Just uncheck Include Safari Suggestions. Done

An alternative workaround is to enter private browsing mode. This can be done when opening a new tab in Safari. Browsing in private mode will turn the background of the browser black.

The other option is to download a separate browser application altogether, such as Google’s Chrome. I’m sure Apple won’t be too long with the fix.

DoctorLaptop News Clarification Regarding Apple/Macs

Got an email from a Mac user who disputed my statement, “Apple/Macs already are moving in this direction where paid system upgrades come out on a regular basis and old programs quit working if you fall too far behind.” The simple explanation is this. You don’t receive a charge when you update because you already paid for them up-front when you bought your machine. That’s one of the main reasons you pay 2 to 3 times as much for an Apple/Mac over a Windows machine with the equivalent hardware. It’s a marketing concept called “bundling”. As for paid app updates, this is essentially what happens when your favorite app disappears from the Apple Store so there is no update, it just quits working eventually forcing you to buy a new app to do the same function. What’s on Nerja Players

Richard Brinsley Butler Sheridan was an Irish playwright and poet and long-term owner of the London Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. He is known for his plays such as The Rivals, The School for Scandal, The Duenna and A Trip to Scarborough. The School for Scandal was first performed in London at Drury Lane Theatre on 8 May 1777 and  is considered one of the greatest comedies of manners in English.  It  deals with upper class rumour-mongering and manufacturing, infidelity and attempted seduction, family loyalties and disloyalties, romance and marital strife, age differences among couples, dissolute youth and pretended virtues and much more. The comedy is timeless and as laugh-producing today as it was in the 18th Century — perhaps even more so.
It has been adapted for a dramatized reading by our artistic director, Marty Margulies, who also plays Sir Peter, and it will be presented on Tuesday, 2nd February at the Nerja Bridge Club (the blue doors set back next to the Café Royale at the top of Avda Castilla Perez) at 6.30 for 7.  This performance is open to the general public.

We would also like to remind everybody that we hope to perform Wind in the Willows at the Nerja Cultural Centre later in the year and are still seeking performers and people willing to work behind the scenes.

Heart Warming Story – thanks to Peter for Caring   bouquet

Hi Jane,

I felt I’d like to share with your readers something I’ve witnessed over the last few days,

first of all I witnessed my neighbor, an elderly lady struggling to get up and down a few steps down to the road from her house,

then I witnessed a town hall representative come and look at it,

then a couple of council men came and measured up,

then something quite wonderful,

they turned up, cut the steep steps out to make two shallow ones,

and they even put a banister up on the wall adjacent to the steps,

they done a good job of both,

all this so that an elderly lady can be safer as she leaves and returns to her house,

Torrox Pueblo, yes not perfect, a few dog poo’s to look out for as you walk,

but congratulations to the town hall for showing compassion and doing something positive and practical for this elderly lady,

maybe a bunch of flowers??

 

 

Warning re Walking Poles

​Do NOT buy cheap walking poles of the telescopic type!!! They may collapse when you need them the most, withdisastrous  results! Happened to me once, so I fell face first down on the rocky path! I was fairly lucky, no permanent damage!

Then I got myself a good old fasioned wooden stick, cheap in the Chinese shop            (5-6 €)!

Add in the recent announcement that new computer chips produced after mid 2017 will not be compatible with versions of Windows from before Windows 10. Having waited three months on a local garage repairing our car, it now seems it’s going to be uneconomical to finish the repair, so we shall be looking for a smaller, cheaper car. I missed the recent shocks, we live near to Canillas de Aceituno and perhaps the tremors didn’t affect us. If anyone is interested in keeping up to speed with quakes either locally or worldwide Bill Padley on Talk Radio Europe spoke about an App he uses on his Iphone, LastQuake.So i thought i would give it a try. It’s excellent and It’s free to download from the App Store, easy to use and quite scary to see how frequently quakes are happening.

All recent quakes are centered around Al Hoceima, Morocco.
1 quake at 7:32am Wednesday, 4.9 mag.
10 quakes yesterday, 6.3 to 4.2 mag
1 quake 6 days ago 5.1 mag.
Then last local quakes before that were 29 Oct15 in Albox,

Spain 3.2 mag. and Palafrugell, Spain 3.8 mag.
No local quakes for 6 months previous to that.

Recommendation – Alex & John – Transport

I would like to show my appreciation to Alex and John who moved my very heavy furniture and copious amounts of tat from a very difficult location to Torrox last week.

This was no small feat.

They arrived on time every day and it was just heads down and get on with it for three days.

What’s on –  Question – Excercise Club ?

Is there an excersise class in the Torrox costa area or any village close by, late afternoons or in the evenings, preferably not zumba as it is a bit too energetic and my back and my heart wouldnt stand the pace. A bit of dancing would also be ok, line dancing etc… as I am turning into a couch potato with a stomach bigger than a 5 kilo sack!!

Walking Poles – Suggestion

A couple of weeks ago they had decent walking poles for sale at Competa´s Saturday market.  I don´t know the price, but surely not expensive and probably negotiable!

They can also be found for a few Euros, I am told, at the Chinese bazaar in Competa.  May not be best quality, but the person I met who´d bought them used them for the whole of the Walking Festival week at least!

Lady in Competa  seeks help  as she has taken in a lovely small, sterilised, female dog, “Laica” who she found shivering on a cold night at the top of Competa Pueblo. She already has 8 dogs and a number of cats so she cannot keep her much longer.

Do you recognise her? Recommendation – Buddha House Restaurant in Torrox Costa I second Dawn’s recommendation for the recently taken over Buddha House Restaurant in Penoncillo.
I have eaten there three times in the past month bringing friends each time. The various dishes that we have sampled have been truly delicious and authentic for a change. The highlight is the different breads from the Tandoor oven, I love their garlic and keema naan bread. I have tried many Indian restaurants in the vicinity and have not had better Indian food along the coast.

Their shop is close to Supersol in Torre del Mar.

They project managed the complete renovation of our kitchen, including liaising with other companies who were changing the windows and moving the gas boiler.

Tuesday 9^th & 12th February – Photography Club. . From “Good Shot” to “Great Shot”, why not come and learn the art of photography with Rob Bell Photography. A fun and informal class to help you to get more from your camera/photos. Open to all, from beginners to the more experienced photographer, regardless of the type of camera you use. Thursday 18^th February- Coach Excursion to Gibraltar. Why not join Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar and visit Gibraltar, a chance to take a cable car to the top of the Rock, see the unique Barbary Apes.  Visit the upper Rock Nature Reserve, where you will find the Historic Tunnels dating from 1779-1783 and St. Michael´s Cave.  Both of these have guided tours.  In the town can be seen the Gibraltar Museum, Government House and in the southern area are key historical sites. All information may be obtained from the tourist office, or an excellent alternative way of seeing the sights is by hiring a taxi, whose drivers are very knowledgeable and will explain the interesting, historical life of the Rock.  It is also an opportunity to purchase duty free Items and typical English items of food, etc. from the Morrisons super market. Ticket price 12 Euros available at the Centre.  Proceeds for fund raising.  Departure times Puente don Manuel (Hotel Romero) 6.45am,Algarrobo (Lidl) 7.15am, Caleta 7.20am and Torre Del Mar (Bus Station) 7.30am. Looking for a loving home – Nelson, who is blind   

We have a special little boy here who needs a home.  He is being posted again as, unfortunately, the wrong photo appeared last time!

Nelson is a beautiful German Shorthaired Pointer but he cannot see, having received a heavy blow to his head, which has affected both optic nerves and turned him blind.

He is only three years old.

We took him out of the pound because we couldn’t bear to leave him there with the other dogs all jumping on him.

We are fostering him and he is loving, affectionate and very trusting.

In a familiar environment, you would scarcely know he is blind.

He loves his walks (off lead, and with excellent recall), outings in the car and will play with our other dogs and a ball.  He is being taught how to be accepting of cats and is great with the other five dogs here, and people.

Nelson would make a wonderful companion and doesn’t need a lot of space.

Friends re-unites – Success

Our neutered tom cat has disappeared.   He was last seen at 4.00 am on Sunday but failed to turn up for his breakfast or supper and hasn’t come back today.  This is extremely unusual as he never strays very far from us and always comes home at feed times.

He has lived with us for 4-5 years and is slightly nervous around strangers. Unfortunately we don’t have any photos of him.

He is a large, healthy tabby with slightly wiry fur.

We are looking for volunteers to become ‘Kennel Angels’ and join the Axarquia Animal Rescue team in doing the very best we can for the animals in our care and help to prepare them for adoption

Our Kennel Angels will regularly visit our dogs in kennels at either Puente don Manuel or Riogordo and become their friend. You’ll exercise and socialise the dog i.e: playing at the kennels, taking on walks, taking to markets, to bars, dog parks etc. The more our dogs are ‘out and about’ then the more chance there is of someone falling in love with them! If you have transport you can also provide a ‘doggie taxi’ for local vet visits.

We will do our best to match you with a dog or two best suited to you in terms of size, strength and needs. Advice and guidance will be on hand for you and we will provide harnesses, leads and toys etc.

As a kennel angel you really will enrich the dogs lives and help us to prepare them for adoption. You will need to be over 18 years of age and have a love of dogs and preferably have some experience of handling dogs. You’ll need a willingness to help to socialise, train and provide lots of love and cuddles to the dogs.

Recommendation – Credit where Credit’s Due 

Just want to say a huge thank you to the French guy who sells mobile phone and electronic equipment at Tuesday’s El Trapiche and Friday’s Puento del Manuel markets.  I saw a few very negative comments about him during the summer.  He has repaired my Nexus tablet at a very reasonable cost.  I had taken it to several other repairers who couldn’t help me, and took it to him as a last resort. Recommendation Needed
The white(?) cemented area around my pool has become discoloured and dirty in places. I have tried all the usual supermarket detergents but none seem to work too well.  I know a pressure washer would probably do the trick but it would mean dirty water going into the pool and I do not want to go to the enormous expense of filling the deep and large pool with completely fresh water.  Any recommendations as to what I could use please.

The members of 41 Club Nerja continue their fun by holding a Burns Night at the Cottage restaurant in Nerja.  The Haggis was piped in and addressed by Vice  Chairman Jim Skinner, a toast to the ‘Immortal Memory’ was given by Chairman Mike Proctor.  Following interruptions from several members with renditions of Burns Poems the ‘Lassies Health’ was toasted by Alfie Fornear and a humorous response given by Jo Proctor. Scottish songs were sung and Scottish dancing followed.

We continue to look for former Round Tablers from throughout the world and our 40 plus members now come from ten different countries throughout Europe making us a truly European Club. We meet twice a month on the first and third Thursdays. The first Thursday is our lunch time Munch Bunch Menu del Dia around the many restaurants in our catchment area.  The third Thursday sees our normal 41 meeting for the men at Hotel Al-Andaluz in Maro and on the same evenings many of our ladies meet for a meal in one of the local restaurants.

Our excellent website (41clubnerja.org) gives full details of our events.  Most of our members only visit Spain a few weeks per year but by increasing our numbers we are guaranteed a good turn out at each meeting.

Next shopping trip to Gibraltar on Friday the 4th of March.

We have pick ups at at the A1 Garden Centre, Torre del Mar bus station and finally at Algarrobo Lidl at 08.30.  The bus is parked in Morrisons car park and we leave Gibraltar at 16.30.  Due to visa restrictions on entering Gibraltar, please advise if you are a non EU citizen when you book.  Also it is important to remember to bring with you your EHIC card, just in case and passports are essential.  On the way to Gibraltar we stop to spend a penny and for coffee.

Due to an increase in coach fares we have had to increase our prices by €1.  The price?  €12pp includes a €1 gratuity for the driver.  Children under 12 can join us for 1/2 price.   Still the best value on the coast!
Early booking is recommended if you like a particular place, as seat numbers are allocated on a first come, first served basis.  Plenty to see in Gibraltar apart from the shopping!

Kitty Harri’s Sculpture Garden in Jete near Otivar in the Alpujarras – Friday 11th March 2016 a visit.

Do you Have a Bike for Rent ?

My wife and I are from the United States (Boston area) and are living in Torrox Costa this winter.  We would like to go for a bike ride now and then on the Promenade but there seems to be no rentals available (during the winter period) that we could find.  Is there anyone out there that has one or two bikes (that you are no longer using) that we could occasional borrow for say up to an hour.  We could rent them from you if you like.

Finding Services in Spain

I realise personal recommendation counts for a lot, but a lot of the posts requesting information seem to be for services and items that are widely advertised. Most people who live in Spain speak Spanish, and companies that have English web pages aren’t as common as those that don’t, so if you want something like a wedding venue for example it helps to type what you want in English in to Google translate and the copy the Spanish translation in to the search box. This brings up a lot more pages. They are in Spanish of course, but you can reverse the process by copying and pasting the page or click on the “translate this page” to get something you can understand.
Recommendation does count for a lot, and I do understand the issues liable and slander regarding warning against incompetent or crooked suppliers, but knowing other people’s bad experiences is even more valuable. I could offer valuable experience to anyone thinking of having a wood pellet central heating system fitted for example, but this information needs to be passed on with a personal phone call. Perhaps if anyone feels strongly about bad service they could blog to offer experience on a topic, without naming any supplier. What takes place in a private phone call then has nothing to do with Digamextra.

Services Needed– Home Maintenance

Hello fellow DigameXtra fans – we are hoping one of you can help.
We have a lovely house adjacent to the Nerja caves entrance, in Maro.

We are, however, part-timers – usually a week per month; sometimes two if we’re lucky – so we need someone to take care of our small pool and our large, but very manageable, garden on a regular basis.

Other bits of maintenance to be offered pro rata.

The dearest man who has always done it is returning to the UK,

so a.s.a.p. we need a replacement.

We have always based it on four hours a month (either one hour a week or two each fortnight) and double that in the summer months, at the rate of 10 euros per hour.

Previous experience essential, as is speaking English.

I would like to recommend the Buddha Lounge restaurant in Peñoncillo –

Torrox Costa (just past Route 34 motorbike shop).

I understand that the restaurant has recently been taken over by a

Nepalese family.

The food was fantastic, well spiced and not at all greasy.

Being a fan of curry and having visited nearly all the local Indian restaurants

this is the best thus far.
