Recommendation: New Gym in Torrox Pueblo. Training Studio Torrox is a great new gym in Torrox Pueblo run by John D. (all languages spoken). It’s fully equipped, good classes too (pilates, yoga etc). Top quality equipment, lovely studios and a beautiful terrace for yoga and pilates. Rates are excellent, very competitive, either monthly or pay-as-you-go. Located in Calle Alta, parking in the large free car park is a 5-minute walk using the shortcut through the square. Ronda gears up for its historical Romántica event: Ronda, and the Serranía, s gearing up for its traditional Romántica event, which will immerse the mountain town in an era of bandits, travellers, muleteers and other characters from the early 19th century. It will be held on the last weekend of May and include many different activities.

An earthquake was registered in Malaga on Saturday night: A seismic movement was registered in Malaga on Saturday, 2 April. It was at 10.15pm, according to data from Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN). Marbella couple warn of housing rental scam by fake post on Fakebook: On Sunday, February 27, they say they saw an ad on Facebook Marketplace showing a property available for rent in the area of Guadalmina, Marbella. “We were excited at finding such a fantastic deal and it was an enormous blow to find out it was a scam.” She added: “I would like to warn everyone to be very careful.” She lost €2,700 to the scammer. She and her husband went to the address in Los Monteros on the date that had been agreed upon, but there was no sign of the woman who claimed to be the owner. They knocked on the door of the property that they had supposedly reserved with their deposit. The Torrox Spanish History Group will be meeting on Tuesday 5th April, 2022: Our speaker in will be Nigel Partridge who will be giving a talk entitled ‘The New Spain – Democracy & Tourism’. We have had some very interesting talks by Nigel and he is an experienced speaker.
The Torrox Spanish History Group are very lucky because we have many good speakers and over the years we have had some excellent talks. The talks range from the Palaeolithic period through to the modern day.
We also go on excursions and have visited many interesting places. Our next trip will be to either Ronda or Cadiz

Carole’s Book Nook: I have actually finished a new book this month, one I found very enjoyable, its called the Butterfly Garden. I take my Kindle out for a walk most days and read outside, sitting on a polystyrene square on one of the rock hard and freezing benches provided by Torrox Council. With the wind, sand, mud, cold, and rain we have been having it is a miracle I finished any book at all and have to confess my reading habits had to revert to reading indoors. Not ideal, but then needs must.
-The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison
This is a fascinating book (not for the squeamish) about an obsessive man and his son who collect young girls and keeps them, for years, as “butterflies” in a beautiful but locked garden. Not to give too much away the story is related from two angles, a FBI interrogation of one of the victims after they are found and released and the other from one of the butterflies herself. It is compelling, and different, if a bit too long. There are no chapters, just breaks between the two sides of the story, which makes it even more difficult to put down. I really enjoyed it and wouldn’t be surprised if it gets made into a film any time soon.
-My Family and Other Animals by Clare Balding
An enchanting autobiography by Clare describing her upbringing in a house dedicated to race horses (her father being a famous trainer) with her dotty relatives and experiences at boarding school, but mostly about her many pets. The writing is good and funny and the illustrations of all the animals are gorgeous. Anyone who likes dogs and horses and, for that matter, Clare Balding, will enjoy this thoroughly.

Many years ago, in the late 70’s,a friend recommended Punch magazine to me. Now I only knew of Punch from dentist’s waiting rooms, an old fashioned mag that had been going for over a century. She said that the new, young editor was hilarious and had put a whole new slant on its content and appearance. Soon I was hooked, every article was brilliant, the cartoons were so funny, but the star of the magazine was the piece by the editor. That editor was Alan Coren. He could write in any style, Hemmingway, Shakespeare, The Bible and on any subject. This book is a collection of his pieces from the magazine. There were other books by him but this is one of only two that is on Kindle.

-Andalusia has reported a total of 4,962 positives for Covid-19 registered in the last three days, while adding 38 deaths.
-The rate in the region stands at 290.9 per 100,000 inhabitants, down 28.6 points from Tuesday.
-The Andalusian regional government has switched to reporting twice a week – on Tuesdays and Fridays – on the situation of the coronavirus pandemic in the autonomous region, instead of daily as it did until last Friday.

Algeria does not rule out “recalculating” the price of gas sent to Spain: The Algerian energy company Sonatrach has warned this Friday of the possibility of “recalculating” the price of gas supply to Spain, within a context in which it anticipates “promising prospects” for European customers after the discovery of new deposits.

Russia’s Gazprom exits German business amid crisis in energy ties:
-Russia’s Gazprom said on Friday it was quitting its business in Germany at a moment of crisis in the vital energy ties between the two countries in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The gas giant gave no details or explanation of its decision to terminate its participation in Gazprom Germania GMBH and all of its assets, which include subsidiaries in Britain, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.
-Gazprom has been in the sights of European Union regulators for months over allegations, which it denied, that it was holding back gas that could have been released to lower soaring prices. Sources said this week that its offices in Germany had been raided by EU antitrust authorities.
-“I think this means Gazprom is drawing a curtain on being an active participant in the European gas market. Essentially it is going home because it no longer feels welcome,” said Katja Yafimava, senior research fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies.

Iberdrola ALERT! – This is how the cybercriminals who have stolen Iberdrola’s data are going to try to ‘hack’ you: {Translation}
-Cybercriminals are still trying to hit the Spanish company. Iberdrola confirmed yesterday that on 15 March it suffered a hack that left the personal data of 1.3 million users in the air for a day. The energy company explained that the criminals had access to information such as “name, surname and ID number”, as well as email addresses and telephone numbers, according to other media reports. In principle, no bank details or electricity consumption data were obtained.
-Given the data to which the cybercriminals have had access, it is most likely that they will try to use them to create more targeted email or phone call cyber-scams. In this way, they could obtain banking information from affected users or trick them into making payments for fines or supposed services.

Apple Issues Emergency Patches for 2 Actively Exploited Zero-Day Threats in iPhone, iPad and Mac Devices: Apple on Thursday rolled out emergency patches to address two zero-day flaws in its mobile and desktop operating systems.

Gas tariffs go up by 10% from today, double the amount announced by the government: {Translation}

-The truth is that, as this newspaper has verified, the TUR 1 (annual consumption of less than 5,000 kWh) has increased by 9.24% (the variable part); TUR 2 (annual consumption between 5,000 kWh and 15,000 kWh), 9.94%; and TUR 3 (annual consumption between 15,000 kWh and 50,000 kWh), another 10.53%.
-In order to dilute the sharp increase in tariffs, the ministry headed by Teresa Ribera is only talking about an increase in the ‘annual bill’ of 6.93%, excluding taxes, for ‘average consumers’ of the TUR 1, TUR 2 and TUR 3 with respect to the current tariffs. Thus, the increase for TUR 1 consumers is 5.91%, 7.24% for TUR 2 and 7.92% for TUR 3.

La Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios (OCU) considers government measures to combat price rises insufficient: {Translation} 31Mar22 10:00
-The Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) considers the measures approved today by the Council of Ministers to mitigate the effects of the rise in prices and energy to be positive, but clearly insufficient, and calls for more forcefulness and speed in order to have a real effect on the battered economy of families.
-In the absence of a detailed analysis of the small print, to be published in the Official State Gazette, OCU considers that the measures announced, although positive, are clearly insufficient. An example of this is the announced reduction of 20 cents in fuel prices. According to OCU calculations, for an average household the reduction will mean a saving of €65 in the case of diesel and €75 in the case of petrol, over the next three months as a whole. OCU denounces that, despite the reduction, fuel prices will remain well above the prices we had at the beginning of the year. On the other hand, it calls for controls on fuel prices to prevent any anomalous price increases as a result of this measure.
-OCU believes that this reduction is insufficient and calls for the temporary suspension of all energy-related taxes. It recalls that it is the State which, in this exceptional situation, is the main beneficiary of the increase in fuel prices.
-With regard to electricity, the OCU considers that the measures known so far are not very ambitious and urges that their implementation be speeded up as much as possible. With regard to the extension of the number of families benefiting from the social voucher, OCU points out that there are currently many families who, despite meeting the requirements, do not access the social voucher due to a lack of information and the difficulties in accessing and maintaining it. For this reason, the OCU considers it a priority that, in addition to increasing the number of theoretical beneficiaries, the focus should be placed on facilitating access to the social voucher. To this end, it calls for the granting of the social bonus to be an automatic process.
-For OCU, the main problem revolves around electricity pricing, with a marginalist system that amplifies the effects of the spectacular rise in gas prices on international markets. OCU insists on the need to effectively decouple the price of gas from the price of electricity as the only way to produce an effective reduction in the electricity bill that affects consumers, but also the economy in general. OCU, in the absence of other long-term measures, proposes that the exceptional nature of the current situation be translated into a proposal for a maximum price for gas-fired generation plants of no more than 35-40 euros.
-In terms of rent, the OCU considers the announced measure of limiting the increase to 2% to be ineffective and difficult to implement. The Organisation believes that it would be more appropriate to establish aid for tenants in vulnerable situations in accordance with the minimum living income.

Formula 1 News- Las Vegas to host night time F1 Grand Prix in 2023: Las Vegas will bring its glitz and glamour to F1 from next year with the addition of a night race to the calendar – meaning the US will host three events in 2023.
The Grand Prix joins Austin, Texas and the new Miami race – which makes its debut this season – in what will be a unique event which shakes up the standard weekend.
The race itself will be held on a Saturday evening instead of the usual Sunday to make the most of possible TV viewership, and it is possible the lights will not go out until 10pm local time – meaning fans in the UK would be able to watch in the early hours of the morning.
The finer details are yet to be announced, but it is reported that the Grand Prix will be held in November, possibly to coincide with the Thanksgiving weekend.

90/180 day rule for non residents: Nerja Town Hall has just issued a guide for non residents from the UK. I found it quite interesting, but seemed to over complicate this rule.
My simple way of gauging my non-rule-breaking time in the EU is to check back on the first day of my arrival for 180 days previously and make sure less than 90 days were in Spain (EU really) then do the same for my last day. (Since it is a rolling scale you don’t need to worry about days in-between) Simple!!

Germany and Austria take step towards gas rationing: Germany and Austria have triggered emergency plans over possible gas supply disruption amid a payments stand-off with Russia.

Vetiver Grass is a fast growing non-invasive clumping grass that grows to 2 metres in height. It has a root system that grows to 3-4 metres deep and they are very strong.

Once Vetiver is established it is drought resistant.
We are located in Sayalonga and we can plant all year round but February and March are the best months to plant Vetiver. Vetiver loves the heat of a long summer to get established.
Decomposing Vetiver used as a mulch, improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away as it is a natural insect repellent. It is in the same family as Lemon Grass, which we also carry.
Vetiver also is a nutritious and replenishable animal feed. Horses, cattle, and pigs love it.

Spain approves emergency package to tackle high energy bills, waits for EU approval: Spain will cut connection fees and tax excess profits on newly signed electricity supply contracts as part of a multi-billion euro emergency package to cushion businesses and consumers from soaring energy prices, the government said on Tuesday.
Initially announced on Monday, the cabinet approved on Tuesday the 16 billion euro ($18 billion) package of soft loans and direct aid that also includes measures to cap rental increases and boost employment of young people and women.
Of the total package, most of which still needs to be approved by the European Commission, 6 billion euros will come as direct aid and tax cuts mostly extended from a previous package related to the COVID-19 pandemic, while the remaining 10 billion euros are subsidised loans. -The plan, which will last until 30 June, will have an impact of around 6 billion in direct aid and tax reductions and a further 10 billion in ICO credits (loans) to cushion the impact of the crisis.

-Spain will subsidise the purchase of each litre of fuel by a minimum of 20 cents for both private individuals and professionals, of which 15 cents will be provided by the state and the rest by the oil companies. These companies have already announced discounts of up to 14 cents per litre linked to the use of their loyalty cards. The discount will be applied from 1 April when filling up at the petrol station and will benefit all.
-Veto to objective dismissals, and commitment to promote the use of ERTE in companies suffering difficulties or stoppages.
-This week, Spain and Portugal will present to Brussels an “exceptional and temporary” measure to set a reference price for gas used in combined cycle power plants to generate electricity. To this end, another daily auction will be held on the wholesale market to set the price for consumers and SMEs covered by the regulated tariff or pvpc.
-Limits on rent rises to 2% and a 15% increase in the amount of the Minimum Vital Income (IMV).
-Update of the remuneration system for renewables, cogeneration and waste, the so-called Recore, which will mean a reduction in system charges of 1.8 billion. The aim is to bring forward by one year the adjustment in the remuneration of this sector that should be made in 2023.
-Extension until 30 June of the mechanism to reduce excess profits in the electricity market caused by the high price of natural gas on international markets.
-Extension (announced at the beginning of the month) of the tax reduction on electricity bills (VAT at 10% for small consumers, the special electricity tax at 0.5% and the suspension of the tax on electricity generation).
-Extension of the bono social eléctrico to a further 600,000 families, which will reach almost two million households. This bonus, which is a discount on the price of electricity, is paid for by the electricity companies.

Google has urged Chrome users to update the web browser to the latest version in order to avoid being targeted by cybercriminals.
Late last week, the company released Chrome 99.0.4844.84 for Windows, Mac, and Linux, which fixes a high severity zero-day vulnerability that allows for remote code execution.
In an advisory published alongside the update, the company explained that the issue has already been abused in real-life scenarios. “Google is aware that an exploit for CVE-2022-1096 exists in the wild,” wrote the firm. -Crédit Agricole, a French international banking group, has started charging holders of British bank cards making withdrawals at its ATMs in France €5, earlier this month. At the same time, British travellers in France have reported that the bank is also charging them €18 for cash transfers.

The EU allows to Spain and Portugal to lower the price of energy: {Translation} 25-03-2022, 20:23
-Prior to the EU summit, a diplomat from a northern EU country had described Pedro Sánchez as a ‘Don Quixote’ tilting at windmills, given the rejection by northern countries of his proposals to lower the energy bill and his international tour to gather support and turn events around unexpectedly.
-The summit did not disappoint and had its small doses of EU epic: the prime minister even left the room for half an hour, annoyed by a journalist’s tweet that Sánchez was attending the summit with the intention of vetoing the text, despite Spanish diplomatic sources insisting at all times on Spain’s constructive spirit. A price war between Repsol, Cepsa and BP- discounts of up to 14 cents per litre of fuel: {Translation} 25/03/2022 17:16

Government proposes direct aid to end the hauliers’ strike in Spain:
-The Spanish government wants to close a deal with the striking hauliers this week to minimise the impact which rising fuel prices has had on their activity. In a meeting with the National Road Transport Committee on Thursday morning, they outlined plans for direct aid which would reduce fuel prices.
-The negotations were led by Nadia Calviño, the Minister for Economic Affairs, Raquel Sánchez, the Minister of Transport, and María Jesús Montero, the Minister of Finance. The focus was on how the 500 million euros proposed to subsidise commercial fuel will be distributed. According to Europa Press, the hauliers want the subsidy increased to one billion euros.
