Nerja Cudeca Support Group – Today – Thursday

Reminder that the Nerja Cudeca Support Group meeting is on Thursday 21st January at 11.30

in the Caritas Room at the rear of El Salvador Church on the Balcon.  A warm welcome to anyone who feels that a chat and advice on health matters might be of assistance to them,  a member of their family or a friend.

 

 

Nerja Town Hall Meeting : The Padron

Nerja Town Hall is very concerned with the Padron, population list, as 1,600 foreigners are going to be taken off the Nerja Padron as they haven’t renewed their Padron, which has to be done every 2 years. This implies that if we go under the figure of 20,000 inhabitants registered on the Padron, we will lose services and could have a reduction in police, doctors, firemen, teachers apart from losing a very important amount of money that the central and regional governments give to the town halls according to the population figure of the Padron, which at the moment, in Nerja is of 22,200 persons.

We would like to invite all the press, magazines and radios of the nearby areas to a meeting with the Nerja Town Hall Foreigners Department. It would be on Wednesday, 3rd February at 10:30 am at the Nerja Town Hall, at the Salon de Actos on the second floor. The aim is so you can express our concern in your media and make foreigners know that they have to renew their inscription on the Padron every 2 years. They just have to check with the Town Hall that they are on the Padron.

Also to welcome all newcomers to Nerja who spend several months here to register on the Padron for the first time.

The meeting will last approx. one hour. Please confirm your attendance.

The tip in Competa has been closed for a couple of month or more. I have heard that this is because  it is illegal but I would be interested to know the full story.  More importantly though does anyone have any ideas as to where we can now dump our garden waste? MacDonald

Is there anyone in wonderful DigameLand who can recommend a tradesperson who can advise me about my 1970s roof on a villa in the Penoncillo area ?

It appears that the concrete flat surface is ok , but the sloping  sheets above

are showing signs of  deterioration ( which support the heavy tiles )..

I need  an experienced person to have a look and tell me what is required to remedy the problem .

What’s on- FREE Circuit Training Sessions – Competa –  for the rest of January!

Get fit for FREE in 2016!

FREE Circuit Training in January in Competa every Sunday at 10am. Circuit training is a great way to get fit in a fun, group environment. We have 8-10 fitness stations which you stay on for 1 minute at a time before moving on to the next with motivational music to help you exercise. A station may be a core, upper or lower body exercise that you take at your own pace.

Suitable for all fitness levels and adult ages. It will be an held on an outside gym terrace so dress appropriately and bring hydration/water and a towel.  Full instruction will be given by a qualified personal trainer. The session will last an hour and guaranteed to make you sweat! Why not start your new years resolution and get fit in 2016?

We end the session with a tea or coffee and cake. You are welcome to come along and take a look to see what its about and stay for tea and coffee.

The classes will take place at Chili Leisure, Avenida Juan Pablo II, Competa – on the road towards the Campo de Futbol.

What’s on – Concert

 

The Holidays are over and we return to our programming for the second half of the 2015-2016 Season.  Below is a list of upcoming events so you may plan ahead of time.

We wish to widen the scope of our presentations, by including more classical music (instrumental and voice recitals), but also contnuing with jazz, folk, and international music.

We will be offering offer our regular classes and workshops, as well as activities and presentations for children.

You may want to mark your calendar for our upcoming III Festival of Baroque and Ancient Music “La Liebre de Marzo” in March in Frigiliana. In July, the IV “Certamen de Jóvenes Voces del Flamenco”, and in August, the Summer Festival “Nerja, Ciudad Abierta”.  In addition, we will have the III series of exhibitions “Arte en Verano” during the summer months, showcasing local, national and international talent in the visual arts.

 

Our first concert of the year is by the Duo FORASTEROS, voice, guitar and violin by Juanma Alamino and Anne-Laure Kesteman, which includes country, celtic and rock music.  This is the first time this duo from the Costa Tropical performs in Nerja.

Wanted Fabric Shop

Does anyone out there know of a fabric shop in Torre del Mar please? I would like to make some net curtains, but I can only find ready-made, and in the wrong sizes.

I know at least one shop must exist as I’m sure I can’t be the only one who makes things, but I just can’t find one. when I asked in a shop that had some rolls of fabric (but not curtain net), the lady directed me to Cordoba Hogar, which again, only had ready made.

Residency

Contrary to John’s post you do need to renew your residencia after five years, the one you get then is permanent.  You go to the same place you got the original.  In Torre del Mar it is the Comsaria de police.  When we did it last year we only needed passports, application form and original residencia. (and copies of course) We then had to take the form we were given to the bank and pay the fee before returning to pick up the card.  A form to download is available here  http://www.ub.edu/uri/Documents/ex18.pdf

 

Note though that this is renewal, to apply in the first place has become more complicated with questions on income and health care being possible.  From what I have heard it varies from place to place so anyone seeking their first residencia may be well advised to go to their local office and ask what they need first.

Open Office Problem

Despite having written four books, dozens of articles, quizzes etc using Open Office for Windows 7, whilst typing away I inadvertently touched a key, or combination of keys, which shrunk my page view to “tiny”.  Nothing I have tried, including using the help menu (no help, are they ever?) will restore it to normal so I can carry on.  The really strange thing is that all my other documents have shrunk as well.  Help!  I’m sure its something stupid, but can’t work it out. Is Page Preview anything to do with it? If it is I can’t find an instruction on how to get out of preview mode. And why would that affect any document other than the one I’m working on?

Recommendation Doctor Laptop – Bouquet 

Dr. Laptop has just given my laptop and my Samsung tablet a thorough service because  they were running grindingly slow. He also backed up my info onto my external hard drive device.

My goodness,  what a difference there is to my internet connection times and how things are working. For services to three different devices he charged me less than 70 euros and explained everything to me…   I have no hesitation in recommending him. He is sympathetic to technophobes like me!

A suggestion for car parking at Malaga airport.

We have used the ‘long stay’ parking at the airport for short or long stays.

It is way down past terminal three and can be booked online.

A shuttle bus takes care of transport at any time.

You must keep the ticket given in the office and their telephone number

when you return to call for the shuttle bus.

Big advantage is that you keep your car keys and no-one else

can use the car, which does happen with some companies.       Tony.

We always use Parking Costa Golf http://parkingcostagolf.com/en/

They will also take you to the port or station in Malaga too.

We like them as they are easy to get to without having to go into the airport complex. You just turn off the main coastal dual carriageway (MA20) at the Leroy Merlin roundabout and it’s the first exit, and then they just on your right. We have used them for a few years and they do not move your car (we check the mileage as some companies take it offisite somewhere else and you find they have done several kms in it in your absence).      Barbara

What’s on at the Cultural Center of Almuñécar  .

Pianist Daniel Fichera returns to the Cultural Center of Almuñécar on Monday, January 25th at 8 p.m. for a piano recital.  The first half will feature Haydn’s Andante and Variations in f minor and 4 pieces by Brahms, including the beautiful Intermezzo in A Major, op. 118 no. 2.  In part of his ongoing performance of the complete “Les Années de Pèlerinage” of Franz Liszt the second half will be devoted to the “Les Années de Pèlerinage”, Book II – Italy including the Sonetto del Petrarca 104 and the “Dante” Sonata. Recommendation Needed – Airport Carparking

I know that I have read several comments in DigamExtra regarding leaving your car at the airport for short and long stay, but I am unable to find any of them now that I want them! I have tried all sorts of combinations of words, but all searches have proven fruitless. This beautiful girl Connie, was found emaciated and very unwell.
She has been in a foster home where her health has improved enormously. Unfortunately though, she does still have a skin condition which means she can´t mix with the other dogs in the home and she is having to spend long periods in a crate. Understandably she is very bored and her life isn´t good.
Connie desperately needs a foster home where she can move around freely most of the time instead of being cooped up. She also needs a weekly bath.
She is a lovely, friendly gentle girl and would be delighted to be with someone who can spend the time with her that she deserves.
If you have a home without animals, please consider fostering Connie for a while, even just short term would be marvelous. She has been through so much!

Puppies Need a Home   

 Six lovely puppies were abandoned by the roadside in a cardboard box three weeks ago. They were in good condition but frightened as their mother was nowhere to be seen! They were very friendly although frightened of course. We have managed to home three of them and need to find good homes for the remaining three. They are all male and of similar appearance. Scooter to Spain

I wonder if someone could advise me on how to get my 125cc scooter from London to Nerja. If I ride it down myself it’d probably take at least a week and the terrain and weather might be a bit ropey. My last resort will be to take it from Portsmouth to Bilbao on the ferry if it’s affordable then ride it down in the warmer months. Any suggestions welcomed.

More on Warning – Fake Microsoft Warnings

It’s getting more difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff with internet security. One tip I give is…. when you log-in to a site that you have an account with, always input a mistake in the username (or email address) and in the password. The real site will not let you in but a dodgy site will so you can quickly go into reverse and get out. This way they don’t have your username or email address or password!!

Unfortunately if you do this with Apple they may then make you go through the ‘new password route’ which is a pain,

What’s on – Farm Walk through Almond Blossom with Organic Afternoon Tea on 31st January    

Join us for organic afternoon tea and a farm walk on Sunday 31st January at Casa Montes Negros near Torre del Mar. The organic farm is nestled into the foothills of the Sierra Tejeda mountains and with 160 almond trees, January is a wonderful month to head into the countryside to enjoy the beautiful blossom.

The tea is served as a buffet and is inspired by local and seasonal produce, much of it produced on the farm. Tuck into a great selection of home baked cakes (including gluten free ) scones and jam, freshly baked bread with cheese, pickles and chutneys, plus tea, coffee and infusions. Everything is freshly prepared on the day using organic ingredients.

The  (optional) walk takes 1 hour and is of medium difficulty, starting with a walk around the farm and then down to the river before heading back up to the house and through the almond grove. What’s on Thursday 28^th & Friday 29^th January – Coach Excursion to the Alpujarras with Fuengirola Lux mundi.

Please come and join friends on a 2 day excursion to the beautiful Alpujarras.  On the first day you will visit Trevelez, the highest village in the Alpujarras and here there will be a guided tour of a ham factory, where they dry the famous hams which you will be invited to taste.  The visit will be followed by lunch and you will then re-join the coach for a drive through the beautiful country side, passing through the village of Bubion to the picturesque village of CapileIra, where there will be time for coffee and may be you can spoil yourself in the chocolate factory!  Once again you join the coach for your final journey of the day to the 4* Balneario Hotel in Lanjaron, where you will stay overnight and have dinner.

Warning – Fake Microsoft messages

I’ve been receiving emails for a couple of weeks, purportedly coming from Microsoft, telling me I needed to click on a link in order to verify my account as they were changing the terms and conditions of service. Being security conscious, I’d always carefully scrutinised the message headers and noted that they DIDN’T emanate from Microsoft, so realised they were a scam – phishing emails.
Yesterday however, I received an email which seemed completely genuine, so I clicked on the link. I was taken to a website with the Microsoft logo and login. Having put in my username and password, I was shown an error message – ‘The site is currently unavailable, please try later’.
Within a couple of hours, I had an alert from Microsoft that my account had been logged into from Rumania.
I’ve changed the password and enabled dual-factor authentication so should be secure again, but this is a warning to all, particularly if you have Outlook/Hotmail/Microsoft accounts, but the same presumably applies to Gmail etc: do not click on any link asking you to change your password, unless you know your account has been compromised.
I’m now kicking myself for my gullibility!

when we bought our house in 1994, we inherited 1 panel and 1 12v car battery – we added a panel and new batteries, and managed for many years with just this – with gas appliances for water heating/fridge etc. This time of year was always a struggle as the days are still too short. We didn’t have the luxury of LED bulbs then, as they simply weren’t around! It sounds like you are using more power than you are generating. Do you have any gauges/meters so you know exactly what you are producing each day? Are the panels dusty if you live near a track? this can cut down the input dramatically. Are the batteries in good enough condition that they are holding their charge?

When we eventually had access to mains power, we kept the solar system as well,  and 2 years ago upgraded it so that the house is all 220 volt, but all power comes from the batteries, with mains just being used very occasionally to charge them if they don’t cope. Our system was put in by Robert and Roger of Competa Solar Sundays, and we are more than satisfied with it. Robert has unfortunately retired, but Roger the electrician is still working (competaroger at yahoo dot co dot uk), and may be able to help

We start again at La Casa Hotel, Calle Baja, Torrox Pueblo (2 minutes walk from the main square). The first class is onWednesday 20th January 10.30 am – 1.30pm and will run until the 9th March.
All abilities will be catered for, from the complete beginner to the more established artist and all will be made more than welcome.
We cover all subjects, Portraiture, landscapes, animals, abstracts and whatever the individual enjoys. We work in all mediums, oil, acrylic, watercolour, pastel, pencil and charcoal. It’s €8 per session but please bring your own materials.
This year for a change at some of the lessons we intend to sketch/draw and paint  around Torrox Pueblo.

What’s on New restaurant opening on Torrox Costa

Did you know Paco, from Bar Choto Playa at Peñoncillo is opening a smart new restaurant? It will be run by his daughter and his brother, Rafa.  It’s about half a mile further on towards Nerja on the N340, left hand side and called Punta Bañuz.  He’s having an inauguracion (opening party) at 5.00 pm on Friday 15th to celebrate the grand opening.  Go along and wish them well.  If the food’s as good as it is in Choto Playa, it’ll be a great success.

Services Needed – Solar Electricity Problems

Can anyone suggest a  good contact who is able to help ?
We have an installation of solar electric supply which seems unable to store enough power in the 4×12 volt (48 volt) batteries to see us through the evening whilst we watch TV , charge iPads and have low wattage LED lights on.
We do not have access to mains electric and depend on this system for all electricity.
We are having to use a generator to recharge the battery bank very frequently.
The two English men who installed the system will not be being contacted again ,hence the desperate plea !

What’s on Shopping Trip to Gibraltar 4th February

The Phoenix Club are off on their next shopping trip to Gibraltar on Friday the 4th of February.

We have pick ups at at the A1 Garden Centre, Torre del Mar bus station and finally at Algarrobo Lidl at 08.30.  The bus is parked in Morrisons car park and we leave Gibraltar at 16.30.  Due to visa restrictions on entering Gibraltar, please advise if you are a non EU citizen when you book.  Also it is important to remember to bring with you your EHIC card, just in case and passports are essential.  On the way to Gibraltar we stop to spend a penny and for coffee.

The price?  €11pp includes a €1 gratuity for the driver.  Children under 12 can join us for 1/2 price.   Still the best value on the coast!
Early booking is recommended if you like a particular place, as seat numbers are allocated on a first come, first served basis.  Plenty to see in Gibraltar apart from the shopping!

Change of Management . New Indian restaurant opens in Torrox Costa
The Buddha House is the new name  for what was the Masala Restaurant , Penoncillo next to Chotto Bar and near the motor bike shop , opposite Matilda Supermarket
The new management are doing delicious freshly cooked food like Masala used to do and over time they are changing things to their way and recipes . There is a very good choice , catering for all tastes
The front of house staff are very friendly and helpful and speak excellent English
Portions are modest at lunch time , but are only 6 euros , with water of wine at 1 euro .
They have a large glass covered conservatory as well as a sunny terrace and indoor restaurant
They are open every lunchtime and evening except Monday lunch time
Please try to visit soon and see what you think , as if we don t support these restaurants they go out of business and I don t want this to happen to my local Indian !

Pianist Daniel Fichera returns to the Cultural Center of Almuñécar on Monday, January 25th at 8 p.m. for a piano recital.  The first half will feature Haydn’s Andante and Variations in f minor and 4 pieces by Brahms, including the beautiful Intermezzo in A Major, op. 118 no. 2.  In part of his ongoing performance of the complete “Les Années de Pèlerinage” of Franz Liszt the second half will be devoted to the “Les Années de Pèlerinage”, Book II – Italy including the Sonetto del Petrarca 104 and the “Dante” Sonata.
