Renewing Passports –                                                                                               (1)   I don’t know why people are having trouble renewing their passports. If in doubt go onto the British Consulates web site and all information is there.                  I have  renewed 2  in the past 2 years.  First go to the photo shop in the  Calle Andaluzcia , on the main road nearly next door to the Police Station in Torre del Mar. Ask for photos for Britain (they are a different size to those needed in Spain).  Then go on line  and fill in the online renewal form.  You can pay for the new passport online.  Take all necessay documents to any main Post Office and get  the equivalent of registering it.   The passport  office will send it back by courier.  Send  for renewal now and it will not take very long.  Remember if it has not completely run out they will give you the extra period.                  Gina                                                    (2)  Passport renewal – again.                                                                                               Strictly speaking John’s comment in Digame may have some merit – but we must also take into account the fact that the passport office couldn’t care less where you ‘live’, there is for example no requirement to notify change of address. If one is on extended vacation abroad away from ‘home’ and apply for a renewal – no point in having it sent to your home address!! Many ex-pats also have more than one house, some even three, in various countries- which one to send it to? The criteria here I think is a recognised address to which the new passport can be sent and received securely.     A.R.

Question – Writing Group ?

I understand there was a Writing Group that met regularly in Supersol Torre Del Mar. Now that store has closed the upper area where meetings were held the Group has moved elsewhere.

Before moving to Spain I wrote a regular column for ‘The Chichester Observer’ and several other publications. Out here most of my time has been devoted to painting but am now 23,000 words into a novel and a series of short stories.

Thank you! A Marmalade Success

I would like to thank all the kind people who were generous enough to spend a moment to my inquiry regarding a search for ‘pectin’ which was called for in a marmalade recipe I had.

Most eveyone concurred that marmalade made from bitter Sevilla oranges did not require the addition of pectin…that the pips contained enough for a good setting.

My delema was that I wanted to use the sweeter, seedless oranges that I had fresh picked from my own trees! So I experimented and I did in fact use these very oranges, with the addition of a lemon. The whites were skinned off of the peels, which were then sliced very thinly, water and sugar was added and the mixture boiled to the setpoint recommended for marmalades. The result was a superb marmalade: sweet but tangy, with a lovely color and consistancy! A marmalade success! 🙂

I agree with John, giving false information is a criminal offence.

On reading John’s post I thought his comment was aimed at me, the other Tony that was on the earlier post.

I started drafting an email with anger, nearly got to the finish when I went back on the post and realised it was another Tony.

I quickly deleted the draft email. My application was successful using the link provided and I hope this has been of help to others.

I shall now call myself Tony T to stop any confusion, it has been known people have called me other names. Ha. Ha.

Sending a”Link” in an Email….

Just thought there may be others out there who are not sure how to send a link in an email so here is one explanation.

Display the web page you wish to send in your browser (Christine was looking at Sur, Spanish). Left click on the address in the long box at the top of the page to select it and it will change colour. Without moving your mouse, click the right -hand mouse button then left click on ‘Copy’ in the drop-down menu. You have now copied the web page address to your ‘Clipboard’.

Go to the email you want to send (I use Gmail but most email clients have similar functions) and left click on the ‘Chain-link’ symbol at the bottom of the page. A new box is now displayed, right click in the text box next to where it says Web Page then go down to ‘Paste’ in the drop-down menu and left click. You will see your web page address displayed in the box. Click OK and you should see a web page link displayed in blue like this http://www.diariosur.es/ in your email.

Sounds complicated but when you come to do it you should find it quite straight forward.

Responses – Pectin – Not Needed

You don’t need pectin to make marmalade. I make it most years using the Seville oranges off the pueblo trees in Torrox  (collect them before the town hall remove them all and dump them!). The pectin is in the pips so put them all into a net/muslin bag and boil them together the peel, juice and water for the 2 hours or so it takes to reduce the liquid by half. Then remove the pips and squeeze out all the pectin from them. Then add the sugar and bring to setting point. Barbara

Pilates is a form of exercise, using breathing and stretching techniques, many similar to yoga and for all ages.  Classes take place in Calle Diputacion, Nerja, opposite the pensioner’s day centre, on the first floor.

These keys were found in Cómpeta on the Carril de Circunvalación on Friday evening, 1st January. Anyone wishing to claim them, please call 625 78 21 73 after 11am.

 

 

Increased Mail Charges

If you don’t already know, postage charges went up on 1st January.

Letters to Europe now 1.15 euros and within Spain 0.45 euros.

 

 

Finding Products in Shops

Spanish supermarkets do stock almost all the products you can buy in the UK. Eroski in the El Ingenio shopping centre at Velez Malága has half an aisle of gluten free products and a range of sugars and sugar substitutes.

Strangely though, they are usually made by Spanish companies, and have Spanish written on them, so you need to learn the Spanish words relevant to you. There is an aisle with a big Union flag that sells things from the UK, but you pay over the odds for a familiar brand name and packaging.

Carrefour on the way to Malága also has huge range of foods for those with dietary intolerances.
For the rare products Arkwrights at Puente Don Manuel is great. You can buy Certo pectin there and preserving sugar, as well as things like malt extract and uncommon herbs and spices.

Having made 30 jars of marmalade this year though I have not needed to add extra pectin. The gelling effect is dependent on the concentration of pectin of course but also the amount of sugar and the acidity. Pectin is in the peel and pips, and in apples if you need more. Once you have extracted it by boiling or pressure cooking you can chuck the debris away. Acidity is controlled by adding lemon juice.

Sweet oranges are not very acid, which is why Seville oranges are preferred for marmalade. Be prepared to boil and boil though, particularly if you are in the mountains as the temperatures things cook at are affected by altitude.
Finally, if you need more jars you will find the Chinese bazaars sell them as cheap as chips.

Anyone who loses data, for any reason, has no one to blame but themselves in today’s computer environment! Everyone must do backups or risk data loss, that’s just the way it is.

Early Win 7 computers are never going to run Win 10 properly due to hardware issues. There are now tests for this. But considering laptops have an expected 6 year lifespan with average use, it may be time to retire those old laptops. Well maintained towers will last longer. Computers that shipped with Win 8.1 pre-installed should upgrade fine. Units less than 7 years old that originally had Win 7 or Win 8 installed will also upgrade ok but a few of the new Win 10 features will be unavailable, like Cortana personal assistant. The free upgrade to Windows 10 expires July 29 this year. So unless you are dedicated to running Win 7 until it becomes obsolete in early 2020 (and many are) now is the time to upgrade without paying for it. There are certain procedures that must be done to prepare a computer for a successful upgrade to Win 10. If you are doing it yourself check Google search or my blog site for these procedures. Then visit your computer manufacturer’s website for their Win 10 upgrade info. There may be warnings there you need to read concerning your specific model.

IPTV

There was a question recently about IPTV provision. I know next to nothing about it (fairly obvious now!) but a word of warning – I responded to a ‘special offer’ of an IPTV box (Zidoo X1) for 150 euros. In ignorance I bought it, only to find out later that Amazon.es sell them for 55 euros! My advice is to ask the service provider which IPTV box they supply and then check out prices elsewhere. Work on Torrox Beach –

I don’t know how to send the link (!) but there is an article in SUR newspaper about this.
Go to SUR (Spanish) and click on Malaga.
Work has been started to build a breakwater and the piles of sand are part of this. However the work has now been delayed until April 1st to protect a “mollusc” community in this area (in the photo it looks like clams).
Ecologists in Action opposed the construction of this breakwater because of the damage it would do to fish/shellfish etc in the area.
Maybe this will appear in SUR in English.

English car insurance – response

The rules are the same in Spain. When my husband died our car was insured fully comprehensive in his name and any driver over 25. The policy still had 4 months to run and I went to our big insurance broker in Nerja to change into my name. They told me it was ok to leave it till it was time to renew. As my husband had been in the insurance industry all his working life and I’d picked up a bit of info over the years I knew this was not so. I insisted on canceling the policy and reinsured in my name with another broker.
I later realized the ITV was due and being peak time could not get an appointment before due date. My new broker said it was ok as you had 15 or 30 days grace period.
The police were doing a traffic documents check near me and I asked if this was so. They said this was not, and If stopped it would be a fine with no current ITV. Also my insurance would be invalid.
I wonder can anyone set up as insurance brokers with no training or knowledge of the insurance industry.

Responses – Pectin – Not Needed

You don’t need pectin to make marmalade. I make it most years using the Seville oranges off the pueblo trees in Torrox  (collect them before the town hall remove them all and dump them!). The pectin is in the pips so put them all into a net/muslin bag and boil them together the peel, juice and water for the 2 hours or so it takes to reduce the liquid by half. Then remove the pips and squeeze out all the pectin from them. Then add the sugar and bring to setting point. Barbara

Little Podenco Needs a Home

Another homeless pup desperately needing a home.  This is Minnie, she turned up at our house in the campo near Archez about 8 weeks ago, painfully thin and barely able to walk. We have been feeding and taking care of her since then, but as much as we’ve grown to love her, we cannot keep her. She is approx 6 months old, incredibly friendly and loving, playful, loves other dogs and great with our 18 month old son. She has been checked over by a vet, flee’d and wormed, has started her vaccinations and help will be available for neutering. She won’t need much exercise and just wants a lap to curl up on! Passport Renewals

In answer to the request about renewal, several years back I simply stated on the application that I was still in UK (it’s only for posting the new passport anyway) and after filling in the online forms, sent them to my daughters address, who forwarded them to the passport office, the new one went to my daughter who forwarded it onto me.  Cost I believe at the time about £75.

You can apply for it online https://www.gov.uk/overseas-passports

Just go through the process, it’s easy.

When posting your old passport make sure it goes by a courier or other safe way via Correos  with a recorded delivery option.

It goes to Belfast and if your old passport still has up to six months to run it is added onto your new passport.

Make sure you get a picture taken correctly sized as the passport office is very strict. I got mine done at Torre Del Mar next to the main police station.

When getting a picture taken tell the assistant you want it for a U.K. passport, she is very accommodating.

English Car Insurance 2 – Response :-

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. A dear friend was terminally ill and we flew back for 4 weeks. I’d intended to hire a car but he told me to use his. His wife didn’t drive and it would be helpful for me to run her around. No insurance company would let me have insurance on a vehicle I didn’t own. I tried with direct contact and through brokers. The only way was to be added to his car insurance as a named driver. This cost £40 pro rata, the policy had about 4 months left. As it turned out there was quite a bit of ‘running around’ to do, my pal died in the third week. One visit with his wife to their insurance broker to sort a few things out dropped a bombshell. Since the exact time of his death, his car insurance was invalid and I’d been driving it for a few days with no insurance.

Not good and this must happen frequently as there are many insurance policies with named drivers!

Thought I should share with your readers the good experience that I have just had getting a recent problem with my laptop sorted out. I received what was a potential spam email form Microsoft and foolishly I had clicked on a link in the email. A friend recommended me to Naythan, Dr Laptop in Nerja. He was able to run various programmes which checked for any infections in my laptop and then he gave me various pieces of advice for handling these sort of problems if they occur in the future. Additionally he advised me on several matters relating to a laptop which I own in Germany which I found particularly useful and all for a very reasonable small fee. We are resuming FREE Circuit Training in 10th January in Competa every Sunday at 10am. Circuit training is a great way to get fit in a fun, group environment. We have 8-10 fitness stations which you stay on for 1 minute at a time before moving on to the next with motivational music to help you exercise. A station may be a core, upper or lower body exercise that you take at your own pace.

Suitable for all fitness levels and adult ages. It will be an held on an outside gym terrace so dress appropriately and bring hydration/water and a towel.  Full instruction will be given by a qualified personal trainer. The session will last an hour and guaranteed to make you sweat! Why not start your new years resolution and get fit in 2016?

More dogs desperately needing homes

Give a Dog a Home Rescue Malaga have been asked by a UK couple to try and re-home their six small dogs.  This is a critical situation, as they have to return to England due to chronic health problems and move into rented accommodation with their son where, unfortunately, they are not allowed to have pets.

They have been desperately trying to find homes but, as yet, have had little success, although it is possible we may have a home for one or, possibly, two.  Are there any Digamites out there who could offer any of these little chaps/chapesses a home?  We have many more photos and full information on each dog.

This is a family of dogs – a Mum (Yorkie cross aged 6 years), Dad (Chihuahua cross aged 4 years) and four offspring (3 girls and 1 boy aged 3 years).

Processionary Caterpillars

In regards to Chris’s question regarding the dreaded Processionary Caterpillars, the answer is

Yes they do come out early when we have a mild winter like we are experiencing  this year.

It stands to reason if it is colder higher in the mountains then they will start marching later in the year.

We have had reports that they are already on the move in some areas – so if there are pine trees near where you walk your dogs you should take extra precautions –  like keeping them on a lead and carry a bottle of water to flush their mouths out in the event of an emergency.

Also, be vigilant to never let your dog pick up anything while it is on walkies as it could be poison and it is a good idea to keep your vet’s number in your mobile or handy at all times.  Cheers and Happy New Year.

Question :- Sand on the Beach at Torrox

Do any Digamites in Digameland know what is going with the sand piled up on the beach near Laguna Beach, Torrox Costa?
For several weeks I’ve watched lorry after lorry drop off sand, it appeared some sort of break water was being built out to sea, however a week ago this disappeared and now there is a long line of sand piled up with a drop between that and the beach.

10th January!

Get fit for FREE in 2016!

We are resuming FREE Circuit Training in 10th January in Competa every Sunday at 10am. Circuit training is a great way to get fit in a fun, group environment. We have 8-10 fitness stations which you stay on for 1 minute at a time before moving on to the next with motivational music to help you exercise. A station may be a core, upper or lower body exercise that you take at your own pace.

Suitable for all fitness levels and adult ages. It will be an held on an outside gym terrace so dress appropriately and bring hydration/water and a towel.  Full instruction will be given by a qualified personal trainer. The session will last an hour and guaranteed to make you sweat! Why not start your new years resolution and get fit in 2016?

We end the session with a tea or coffee and cake. You are welcome to come along and take a look to see what its about and stay for tea and coffee.

Lots of parking outside.

Booking recommended as places are limited.

The classes will take place at Chili Leisure, Avenida Juan Pablo II, Competa – on the road towards the Campo de Futbol.

Questions –

Processionary Caterpillars…..and Three Kings Processions

Hello, I have 2 very different questions and I wonder if anyone can help. If possible, could answers be sent to Digame as I think they might be of use to others too…

Could anyone let me know when our local processionary caterpillars are likely to start making their moves? Does the warmer weather mean that they are likely to be earlier than last year? Do ones on higher grounds (ie, the mountains) move at different times to any on lower ground?

I am asking because we have a rescue dog that sniffs at/eats anything and everything and want to make sure she is kept safe.

On a much nicer note, does anyone know the time of any of the local Three King’s Parades tomorrow evening? I haven’t been to one yet, so was thinking of maybe Competa, Torrox, Torrox Costa or Nerja.

I have 2 questions.

Since first getting my NIE I have married so now with a new surname and I also have a new passport in my married name.

Do I need to update/ renew my NIE and if so what do I do?

The second question is re my husbands NIE. He cannot find the original although he does have a copy. Does he need to apply for another one and if so how.

I have been providing advice, service and repair of car air conditioning systems since 1998. I am happy to provide you with a free of charge check to ensure that your air conditioning system is working efficiently by testing the gas pressure to see if it has dropped. A drop in gas pressure will result in a loss of cooling efficiency which will make your engine work harder and in turn use more fuel.

It is recommended that you should recharge your air conditioning system every 2 years with gas and lubricant, in order to keep it running efficiently. This is not included as part of a routine car service and so it can often be overlooked.

One Voice Choir of Competa is restarting its rehearsals on

I know that a lot you good people out there did a lot of singing of Christmas carols, and songs over the festive season. (1) Caixa Bank started charging 2€ for my cash withdrawals on my Sabadell debit card last April. I queried it with my bank at the time as all Servired ATM withdrawals were supposed to be free, and they said that some banks were introducing charges to use other cards. Since then, I have only used the Sabadell bank for withdrawing cash. BW

If you are asking about your own house, you would need to sign up to a internet provider and let your (trusted) visitors know your password. However, if a ‘trusted’ visitor is a near neighbour they would also be able to use it at all times from their own house, reducing your bandwidth and slowing you down. They could also sit in a vehicle close by and connect. Horror of horrors they could pass it on to others without your knowledge…. who do you trust?

If you are visiting a house without wifi there is no way to connect your phone or laptop unless you have the ability to connect through your mobile provider or a dongle and have a decent phone signal. This is okay for simple stuff like checking emails but Skype and Facetime and Streaming Video eat up your minutes at an alarming rate.

If you let someone know your password, change the password soon afterwards, it’s quite easy to do,

Where are these dogs now ?   

Does anybody in Digameland know the whereabouts of these two young dogs. They have been visiting my house almost daily since July and love playing with my Jack Russell.   Usually they come together, but not always, and sometimes stay all day, or sleep in the porch at night.  We have become very attached to them but we haven’t seen them since 9th December and are worried. We live in the campo behind the Fortaleza in Velez Malaga just off the Arenas road, so if anyone living in that area has seen them or knows where they are could they ring Pauleen on 638 238 592 just to put our minds at rest.  Thank you.

 

 

Warning – Cash Withdrawals

Like many Digamigos, I bank with Sabadell and use of the Servired cashpoint system has been free of all charges.  Today at Deutsche Bank the screen informed me that I would be charged €1.50 for my withdrawal, and this message came after I had entered my details. Despite frequent pressing of the button marked “Cancelar” the transaction completed and I presume that the charge will go through in then next few days.  Be aware.   KW

My name is Sandie, I am a native English speaker from London

and I have been teaching English as a second language

for 5 years now and would like to offer my services.

I have taught  English from beginner level to advanced students in a classroom environment, in

small groups and also one-to-one.  There were between 6 – 17 students in the class (mainly 15)

of varying ages and countries.  The youngest was a 16 year old Russian girl and the oldest being a 55 year old Spanish man.  One of the students was a Russian nuclear physicist.

My students over the years have varied in age and ability and included a Spanish girl who wanted to pass an exam to become a flight attendant for Emirates Airlines, a French girl who needed to pass the IELTS exam in order to attend Uni and a French guy who needed to improve his English as his company was being taken over by a UK company and he wanted to be promoted.

These all achieved their goals.
