The Cudeca Shop in Nerja now has air conditioning for the comfort of the customers and staff.

The furniture shop in Torre Del Mar will re/open this week and we are looking for more volunteers to help run it.

The Torre del Mar shop opens in the afternoons Monday to Friday as well as the mornings Monday to Saturday.

If you can spare a few hours a week to help this very worthy charity we will be delighted to hear from you.

We are also looking for volunteers in the Nerja shop.

We usually work from9.45am until 2pm Monday to Saturday and would love to hear from you if you can help us out.

Delightful pair of kittens seeking accommodation

The little chap above is grey and white and his sister is black and white with some tasteful yellow accessories. They’re healthy and happy at about 3 months, but sadly cannot stay in their temporary home in Algarrobo pueblo. As they’re siblings, it would be lovely if they could stay together, but if you only have room for one, that’s o.k. too. Transport, if needed, in the area can be arranged without charge.

Please can contributors stop slandering all Spanish people and trying to make us believe all others are Saints.

It really is not helpful to anyone and completely untrue. There are people of all nations who are wonderful and not so wonderful to their animals. Brits included !

In response to ‘Vigilance in the hot weather’ (July 19th)

At 35deg C in the sun the average car with it’s windows and doors shut can become hot enough inside to kill a small person or dog, in about 15 minutes. Even if one or more windows are open a little for supposed ventilation.
If and when you notice a baby in a car in those conditions, you don’t know how long it has been already. By the time you’ve been in the shop, found a person to make a tannoy call and gone outside again it could be too late. It’s your call. Just walk on by if you like. Or stand and watch what happens.
Or do something. Phone the police. Phone the ambulance. Phone the bombero. Shout your head off. Get everyone around involved. Blast away on your car horn. Shout fire, fire, fire. Get attention.

No-one is suggesting that you immediately smash your way in and hopefully if you did you wouldn’t be stupid but do it as far away from the baby as possible so they don’t get bits of glass on them. They then need to be partly undressed and taken to a cool place, at least with a fan and professionally medically checked. Little brains can be so easily damaged with overheat.

But the main thing is, don’t leave it too long. And when the scum that did this show up, smack them in the mouth!!!! (Err maybe not….)

RecommendationWanted – Local car servicing/maintenance

It`s time for a tune-up on my 2012 Mini Cooper, as well as a brake job and probably new tires. Can anyone recommend a local garage up to the job or do I need to bring it to the Mini dealer in Malaga?

The factory warranty is now up, so back in the US, this is the point when I would abandon the god-awful expensive dealer service and find a reliable garage to do the necessary work at a more reasonable price. Recommendation- White Fly and Prickly Pear Cactus.

Prickly pear Cactus while we might consider them exotic, pretty even, are a menace which is spreading in Malaga and Almeria provinces. Originally bought to Europe in the 1800´s from central America fo the production of vegetable dyes (Cochineal fly) they now represent one of our most invasive species. Anyone living in rural areas of la Axarquia this year will have not missed the small white flies that have been flying right through our mosquito netting and dying in their thousands in our homes. Once on furniture and bedclothes for instance you will have permanent staining from the blue red dye they harbour in their bodies.

In Almeria province this problem has been well publicised by the authorities but in Malaga it has not.

I feel that by word of mouth people should spread awareness of the problems that these cactus pose as both an invasive species and their hosting of the Cochineal fly colonies.

What to do?

1)Dont plant them to start with.

2)If you have them cut down and bury the cactus. If they dont have light they will rot but they need to be felled and covered with earth.

3)There is liquid available from garden centers that can be spryed on the plant which breaks down the skin so that the mosture is lost and the cactus `deflates´ and will dry and die but it will need a few aplications over the year and before the summer heat.

4)Try to uproot smaller plants with a pickaxe. The root systems are usually close to the surface and are often easy to pull up. Let them dry out and burn them when you light your next fire, that will at least disable them.

5)If you have a lot of them work away at them over a couple of years.

6)Tell your neighbours to do the same.

What NOT to do.

1) break off parts of the cactus and discard them in the campo. They will always grow, wherever and in two years you will have a big job where before you had a small one!

2)Ignore them. They spread and as we have seen the resulting white flies are not easy

to live with.

Really, this is a serious long term problem that is only going to get worse without concerted effort.

Labrador Found in Canillas

Has anybody in the Canillas de Albaida/Competa lost a very friendly black Labrador wearing a collar with bone decoration – as twice now we have seen this dog around,

It joins us when we take our dogs out and tonight it came to our door. We gave it some water and it wanted to come in but we have 2dogs and 2cats and they were a bit afraid. We were able to stop it coming in and it went away. Paul, Competa.

There are 5 pups at the Pound……

These pups will get ill. They are in a small unsuitable cage – full of fleas and tics and get seen too once a day!

Once a day to be cleaned, fed and watered.

I am begging for foster care!! These dogs will not survive in these conditions.

Help with White Flies…..

Has anyone the solution to the hundreds of tiny white flies that gather round our bedside lamps covering everything near including us and sheets etc?

Answers here please for benefit of others.

In response to ‘Vigilance in the hot weather’ (July 19th).

Whilst it would be very conscientious to smash a car window to protect a hot child or dog in this heat, I do think Keith is perhaps slightly simplifying the situation

If you go and smash a car window in Lidl car park I think you would have more than an insurance company to contend with. Namely the security guard, the owner of the car, the Guardia Civil, and anyone else that may misinterpret your actions (Are they breaking into my car to steal stuff? Steal my child or dog? Has my child or dog been hurt by flying glass?). There would probably be a bit of violence thrown into the mix.

In Spain the locals dont really give a hoot about the care of their dogs and may well take a different to view to any animal loving ex pat. See above!

Oh, and, you would in all likelihood spend a day in the police station whilst the mess was cleared up.

Great thoughts, but alas, it could all go horrible wrong. So please have a think before you get too drastic. Consider use of the shop tannoy, or try to tell someone in ‘authority’ before the hammer comes out.

What’s on-Trip to La Roja Region

The Phoenix Club are off to the La Rioja region in October for a 5 day, 4 night mini break. Logroño is a city in northern Spain, on the Ebro River. It is the capital of the autonomous community and province of La Rioja. Well off the beaten tourist trail, Logroño is the capital of La Rioja, a charming, tiny region four hours north of Madrid.

Famous for its red wine and for being a stopover on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage that cuts across northern Spain, Logroño has plenty of undiscovered merits and allures of its own. Perfectly situated between cities like Bilbao, Pamplona, San Sebastián, Burgos and Zaragoza, Logroño is well worth a stop on any trip around northern Spain. Modern gastro-bars and old-world taverns rub shoulders with each other in and around the old quarter of Logroño.

But the best reason to visit Logroño, and what distinguishes it from many other cities in Spain, is the wine culture. Digamites might have friends or family who would be interested in an opportunity to work as a supervisor at TAILTorrox- our dog refuge.

The person would obviously have to like dogs and be confident about handling them.

You would be involved in the supervision of volunteers, as well as helping with the general running of the refuge and helping to organise activities for fund raising.

We currently have a team of residents who volunteer and who take part in regular meetings

Food and accommodation is provided and a minimum of 25 hours a week with two free days.

Some Spanish language an advantage but not essential.

It is a great environment to work in with volunteers of all nationalities and would also suit someone who might be looking to re – locate and improve their Spanish.

In today’s post on the subject, the writer suggested that Edessa’s database had been hacked.

Endesa – further warning

There’s need for a bit more vigilance around the Endesa scam than just the fake bills. It seems that the scammers have got hold of Endesa’s client database, otherwise how can they e-mail us? As many of us pay by Direct Debit there is the risk that they may also have got that banking information, so we all need to watch our bank accounts and make sure that no fraudulent debits are set up on the account. If they are, then contact your Bank immediately – banks have no desire to become embroiled in fraud and they will help.

In their response Endesa appear to have taken a leaf from the many UK companies that lose client data, apparently with no sanction against them – a bit of ritual hand wringing, a few platitudes and they tell us that we “need to watch out”!

Regards and thanks also to Jane for her patience and hours of unpaid good work – she deserves a bouquet..

Help Needed with MacBook

Just bought a Epson inkjet printer to use with MacBook Air. Followed instructions for set-up including wi-fi but guess what? When trying to print something get the message printer not connected. The printer is obviously set-up and working OK as printed wirelessly from my iPad without problem. Have trawled the web but without success.

Any suggestions welcome.

The cultural association Ventana Abierta: arte, cultura, personas presents in August the II Summer Festival “Nerja Ciudad Abierta. Warning – Scam Mails

I had an email yesterday from Endesa with a bill to me for 899 euros .. almost 10 times what I pay. I quickly realised all the information on it was completely wrong .. the contador number etc etc ..also Endesa don’t send online bills in that format. …and there was a “click here” request to see more … two hours later I received a phone call fro a guy in Spanish saying I had an urgent bill outstanding that needed immediate attention .. uh uh .. anyone EVER heard of Endesa ringing someone up .. I don’t think they even possess a phone !!! …. on the bank managers advice I’m off to the police with all the info including the tel. no. SO

What’s On – Trip to Almuñecar

The Phoenix Club are off to the Almunecar on Monday evening the 15^th August to celebrate their Fiesta de la Virgen de Antigua. This is the Patron saint of Almuñécar and a week long party with fair ground, live music, dancing and much partying all night long. Supporting activities and events take place in and around Majuelo Park, Casa de Cultura as well as a beach volleyball competition near the Los Bajos beach bars.

This all comes to a head on the 15th with the statue of the Virgen being solemnly carried from the church down to the beach at La China. She is then sailed around the rocks of the Peñon, escorted by a small armada, to arrive back on land at Playa Peurta del Mar around 23:00. This then triggers a truly amazing firework display from the beach, castle, sea and all points of the compass! When this finishes everyone heads back to the feria to eat, drink & dance the night away.

The Firework display starts at 23.00 for an hour and then we return to the bus at half past midnight to come home.

Warning re Tow Bars & Spanish Law

Please be advised that you cannot just remove a tow bar from a Spanish reg vehicle yourself.

It has to be done by a recognised mechanic and a new EVT with the info on the paperwork..

Also you cannot fit a tow bar to a Spanish reg vehicle yourself, it has to be done by a recognised mechanic and a new EVT with the info on the paperwork.

There will have to be the tow bars original manufacturers certificate of compliance when presented for EVT.

I had a new Spanish made tow bar, with all paperwork, fitted to a Spanish reg saloon and it ended up being presented for EVT 3 times before it was completed and the mechanic that fitted it had to take the car himself, with his tow bar fitting certificate!

They are red hot. There are UK tow bar companies that will not now ship their gear to Spain because of the regulations,

Regarding the post about using the key-cutting shop in El Ingenio, be careful to ask what the cost is before ordering a key. They do key cutting but it can be expensive. We had a key cut for a Hyundai Atoz (small compact car) and it cost nearly 80 Euros!

In response to Tish Davies article, I would like to detail my experience regarding the illegal dumping of household rubbish on the surrounding roads of Competa.
A bin was placed at the junction of the road to La Mata and the Competa/Torrox road recently and it has become a sad advert for the area. I believe it is illegal for the local council under E.U. law to encourage people “not” to recycle their rubbish.
I placed notices on the bins in Spanish and English last Friday lunchtime.

Whilst I was placing the notices, a British guy pulled up in his car with a bag of rubbish. I asked him could he read the notices, he grunted and put the bag in the bin, and went back to his car, talking in English to the rest of his passengers . The notices lasted 2 days, before they were torn off. The English notice I put up was:
PLEASE CONSIDER DISPOSING OF YOUR HOUSEHOLD RUBBISH AT THE RECYCLING CENTRE, OPPOSITE THE BUILDER’S YARD (TEJIERO AND GLOYPAT), ON THE WAY INTO COMPETA, ABOUT 1 KM FROM HERE.

I contacted the Council a few weeks ago to enquire as to whether the Recycle Centre On the Competa/Torrox road was now “legal”. I was told that it was. I stated that the vast amount of people that I had spoken to, still believed that it was closed to the public. I suggested that a sign be put up outside the concealed entrance to state that it was now open. I was told that a notice was going to be put in the Grapevine to explain the situation. Yes, two lines of text were inserted in the magazine to state that it was now open.
The illegal letting of property has a lot to do with this situation.

Rubbish – Appeal for Tidiness

Can I make an appeal to people that think overflowing bins like this are acceptable? If your nearest bin is full, please make an effort to take your rubbish to the multiple bins, skips and recycling points that are located at the (previously known as) ‘tip’

There are plenty of other re-cycle points and bins around. If you don’t want a smelly bag of rubbish in your car then hang it from your rear windscreen.

If you are a holiday villa owner, or property management company, please instill in your rental guests the importance of disposing of rubbish in a sensible manner and encourage them to re-cycle.

Don’t just moan that the Ayuntamiento isn’t collecting it regularly enough – I have already written to the Alcalde. Let’s all be pro active and sensible in rubbish disposal and recycling and keep our beautiful village of Cómpeta clean and tidy.

Fire in Nerja

Is this the first fire this year near Nerja ?

On Sunday evening the familiar sound of the water bombing helicopter could be heard over the motorway tunnel to the west of Nerja.

They do a wonderful job – but the Bomberos seem very unfamiliar with their local region and one can watch them trying to get near the fire along tracks that locals know will never reach the place.

The Guadia Civil seem to suffer from the same lack of local knowledge.
