Recommendations & Requests

The new debate in Spain- should medical-grade face masks be mandatory?: I’m surprised that no-one has mentioned this, but some FFP2 masks (such as this one), have an exhalation valve allowing unfiltered breath to go out. This type of mask will only protect the wearer. They are designed for medical professionals and vulnerable individuals in high-risk situations, and not recommended for Covid-19 or any anti-viral use in public places, unless with another mask underneath.
I hope this doesn’t confuse an already complicated situation!

BOJA that extends the Covid measures in Andalusia until February 15 published: {Summary, translated from https://sevilla.abc.es}
Updated: 01/30/2021 20:11
-The situation in Andalusia continues to be worrying. As much as it seems that the community had reached the peak of the third wave of the coronavirus, the Board is still very aware of the evolution, which forces them to continue imposing restrictions to reduce infections, hospitalizations and deaths. For this reason, the Government led by Juanma Moreno has decided to extend the current Covid measures another fifteen days in Andalusia for, as confirmed by the BOJA published this Saturday, January 30, since they lost their validity on Sunday, the 31st of this month. See BOJA announcement .
And it is that in recent dates all the records of the pandemic in Andalusia have been broken for the worse, to which must be added the uncertainty that exists among the experts regarding how the going to act new strains of the coronavirus are, like the British. The Board believed that it had reached the stabilization of the third wave and, therefore, the moment at which the curve enters the so-called “plateau”, but the data on Friday were again very worrying and generated another peak of infections, hospitalizations and deaths.
Thus, the current Covid measures will remain in Andalusia until 11:59 p.m. on February 14, as can be read in the BOJA. With this, the Board seeks to produce not only this long-awaited stabilization of the curve, but also the beginning of the decline, since the measures imposed for this are quite restrictive and should take effect now. Even so, due to the existing concern, Juanma Moreno again asked this Friday that the Andalusians stay at home during the weekend and only have contact with the narrowest family nucleus. Andalucía asks permission to confine and advance the curfew, again: {Summary, translated from https://sevilla.abc.es} Updated: 01/30/2021 20:11
The Minister of the Presidency, Public Administration and the Interior, Elías Bendodo, has demanded this Saturday the Government of Spain modify the decree of the state of alarm so that the autonomous communities can advance the curfew and establish home confinements, since they are fighting against the advance of the coronavirus “with one arm tied behind his back.”
“We want the Government, if it decides to continue looking the other way in this third wave, to leave us to the communities . We are willing to assume the wear and tear, but they have to give us the tools to bring about the advance of the curfew or specific confinements based on the multiplication of cases, “he insisted. Ecologists denounce the construction of new Velez-Malaga reservoir over ‘illegalities’ and ‘potential risks’: They have raised concerns over “the illegality and potential risks of a reservoir for agricultural irrigation” that is being built on a farm in the centre of Chilches. President of GENA, Rafael Yus, said in a statement that a series of earthworks with heavy machinery have been taking place since last December on said farm, “supposedly destined for the cultivation of mangoes.” PHOTO:EWN/GENA. WhatsApp now requires biometric authentication before allowing PC and web access: You’ll now have to confirm your identity using your biometric information to link a WhatsApp account to the PC or the web. The Facebook owned company has added a layer of protection to its apps in order to limit the chances of somebody else linking to your account without your knowledge or permission. As long as the phone you’re using has face or fingerprint unlock switched on, WhatsApp will ask you to go through the authentication process when you link your account to the service’s desktop app or web version.
After the service verifies your identity, you’ll then have to scan a QR code with your phone. The new biometric authentication feature is active by default, and the only way not to trigger it when linking your account is to completely switch off face or fingerprint unlock.

WhatsApp Exploit Spreading New Android Malware: A newly discovered Android malware has been found to propagate itself through WhatsApp messages to your contacts in order to expand what appears to be an adware campaign.
“This malware spreads via victim’s WhatsApp by automatically replying to any received WhatsApp message notification with a link to a malicious Huawei Mobile app,” ESET researcher Lukas Stefanko said.
The link to the fake Huawei Mobile app, upon clicking, redirects users to a lookalike Google Play Store website.
Once installed, the wormable app prompts victims to grant it notification access, which is then abused to carry out the wormable attack.
This development once again underscores the need to stick to trusted sources to download third-party apps, verify if an app is indeed built by a genuine developer, and carefully scrutinize app permissions before installation.
But the fact the campaign cleverly banks on the trust associated with WhatsApp contacts implies even these countermeasures may not be enough. There are no known fixes available as of now.
Stefanko said the exact mechanism behind how it finds its way to the initial set of directly infected victims is not clear; however, it’s to be noted the wormable malware can potentially expand from a few devices to many others incredibly quickly.

Trapiche Market Cancelled (probably?): (NOTE: This is a rerun of the post from last week. I have not heard from the organizers this week to confirm if it remains closed, but with all the new municipal restrictions I would be surprised if they were reopening next week. Call them if you need current info. I found no reopening announcement on their FB page. -Ed.)
Trapiche market is sadly closed this week due to the current covid regulations.
The market has a facebook page and most of the stall holders advertise their services and items there, some also take orders and delivery can be arranged.
Please support these small, local businesses which you can do by following them on facebook. Some businesses are able to work as they are not based in a municipality which is closed. You can contact most of the business via the Facebook link to Trapiche Market which you will find at the bottom of this advert.
We look forward to seeing you in the very near future. If you’d like more information please contact Anita at anitajjordan @ hotmail.com / +34 627 877 164

Lost deliveries UK to Spain: In relation to missing parcels I would like to warn anyone thinking of using the services of (name removed to comply with online anti-defamation laws) in the UK.
I had a parcel collected by arrangement with (removed) and the company which was engaged to collect was (removed). Full tracking was promised.
I had tracking as far as collection then nothing further.
After 2weeks I contacted (removed) and reported the non-delivery. I was informed that an investigation would take place. I received no further communication.
After 3 weeks I again contacted them and I was informed that it was lost and because there was no insurance the case was closed.
I wrote to them again and received no acknowledgment of the e mail which I sent.
I have had issues with the company in the past when they broke some articles and refused to pay any compensation stating articles not covered.
I was not made aware that I needed to take out insurance in case they lost the parcel.
There appears therefore to be no way forward.
Box still lost.

What are mini PCs?: A mini PC combines the performance of a good laptop with the upgradability of a full-size desktop computer together in a package the size of a paperback book. Mini PCs are fast enough for anything other than high-end gaming, and unlike some laptops, they include all the ports you need to connect multiple monitors in 4K/HD, and your favourite wired or wireless keyboard and mouse.
As I reported some time ago, I have been testing a few different makes and models. Many mini PC manufacturers were previously in the TV box business, so their names may not be familiar to you like major computer makers would be. The logic is if they made good TV boxes, then their mini PCs should also be high quality. A few of the computer companies do make mini PCs, but other than Apple’s extremely expensive mini PC, these are not widely distributed, more a special-order item. However, for several years now, they are have been very popular in corporate workstations. And now the public is catching on as prices drop amid the new demand.
I have decided to go with mini PCs by a company called Minis Forum and will be selling both new and used ones from time to time. I have a demo model hooked up at my workshop feeding 2 large displays, 50inch for movies and 24inch for internet, running at the same time with no stuttering or overheating! It is really quite impressive how new tech and miniaturization now provide us with these very affordable, fully functioning computers in such a small, convenient package.
No more worry about spills on your laptop keyboard, or finding a laptop in your preferred language. External keyboards are cheap and easily available in different languages. Tight for space? These mini PCs come with mounting hardware that allows it to be mounted on the rear of many flat screen displays, or on a wall or bookshelf.
More details when I post specific models for sale starting tomorrow. -DoctorLaptop.

Contagions double in 24 hours and break the downward trend of the third wave in Andalusia: {Translated from https://sevilla.abc.es} Updated: 01/29/2021 20:29
-There is no truce. The timid indications that the most acute phase of infections of the third wave of coronavirus in Andalusia had been overcome have disappeared this Friday with the registration of 7,759 new infections in 24 hours, twice as many as the previous day.
-The community adds another this Friday 90 deaths from the pandemic and increases its incidence rate to 891 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 14 days, similar to the national average, with Almería (1,133) and Huelva (1,062) as provinces with the highest incidence depending on of its population and Seville as the province with the best record, with 707 cases. The seven-day incidence rate (384), however, is still less than half that of two weeks ago.
*Hospitalized*
-Meanwhile, the is increasing healthcare pressure in Andalusian hospitals where a total of 4,500 covid patients are already being treated , 183 more than on Thursday. This is a figure never before reached in the pandemic. With this level of occupancy of Covid beds, the number of resources provided in the contingency plan activated two weeks ago by the Ministry of Health, which this Tuesday activated the following plan in anticipation of a ceiling of assistance of 7,500 coronavirus patients, breaks.
-Of the total number of beds occupied, 654 correspond to critical patients in Units Intensive Care , which have registered an increase in occupancy of 30 admissions in 24 hours.
-According to data from the Ministry of Health , the percentage of occupation of conventional hospital beds by covid patients is 25.6 percent, while that of ICU beds is close to 36 percent. Both records are at limits very high health alert. The new debate in Spain: should medical-grade face masks be mandatory?: One year on, non-medical face masks continue to be allowed, even though health experts say they are not safe, given what is now known about how the virus is spread, and the emergence of new, more contagious strains, such as the B.1.1.7 variant detected in the United Kingdom. But if FFP2 masks – theoretically the most effective at stopping the virus – were mandatory, it is not likely that there would be sufficient capacity to produce this level of supply, according to the Association of Personal Protective Equipment Companies (Asepal).
Other countries are already cracking down on non-medical masks on the grounds that they do not provide enough protection from the virus. France issued a decree last Thursday banning certain homemade masks from being worn in public. Under the decree, only three types of masks are recommended: surgical, the FFP2 and fabric masks made to category 1 standards, which filter at least 90% of three-micrometer particles. In Germany, residents cannot enter closed spaces, such as supermarkets and offices, with fabric masks. Only FFP2 and KN95, both considered personal protective equipment (PPE), and blue surgical masks, which filter more than 90% of particles, are allowed. In Bavaria, FFP2 masks have been mandatory since last Monday.
While surgical masks can be bought for €0.15, PPE masks cost at least €2. Given that they are only effective for eight hours of use, an individual would have to spend €60 a month if they needed to use one a day.

France closes its borders to non-EU countries: French Prime Minister Jean Castex announced on Friday night that the country would shut its borders to arrivals from outside the EU, warning of a “great risk” from the new variants of Covid-19.

EU u-turns on invoking Northern Ireland safeguard mechanism: Today’s (29 January) Commission announcement on a temporary transparency and authorization mechanism on vaccines backfired when it became clear that it could potentially trigger the safeguarding mechanism (Article 16) of the Northern Ireland Protocol.
The realization that the European Commission had invoked the article to avoid vaccines being routed through Northern Ireland to Great Britain, should an export restriction be imposed – however unlikely – provoked strong reactions from politicians in Ireland, Northern Ireland and the UK.
Democratic Unionist Party leader Arlene Foster called on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to trigger article 16 in retaliation. In a video message Foster claimed that the EU was trying to block the supply of a vaccine into the United Kingdom and “in one fell swoop” had reintroduced a hard border. Andalusia exceeds the peak of the third wave of coronavirus adding 82 deaths: {Translated from https://sevilla.abc.es} Updated: 01/28/2021 20:39
-Since the beginning of January it has registered 3,477 new patients or, in other words, in a single month it has multiplied by five the number of people who need health care due to the pandemic. From 900 hospitalized patients that were registered on January 2, to the 4,417 that there are this Thursday, 624 of them in the ICU.
-However, based on the data, there appears to be a slowdown in hospitalization for coronavirus. Thus, Andalusia has been recording less than 150 new hospitalized for two days. They are still very high figures but the previous ten days had more than 200 daily entries.
This data seems to point to the theory that the community would already be past the peak of the third wave , which would fall timidly. It is something that can be seen in the infections and the incidence rate, which is moderating and now also in hospitalized patients.
ICU and dead, very high
-However now the focus is on ICUs and the dead. Due to the evolution of the pandemic, it is to be expected that those continue to rise as those who require intensive care and, later, the deceased will skyrocket.
-Meanwhile, infections do experience a notable drop this Thursday. There are 3,676 new infections that the Board has notified, which is almost half that of yesterday Wednesday and, more importantly, the best Thursday in two weeks. Normally this day there is usually a rise in cases and reflects the general state of the pandemic. Thus, those fewer than 4,000 positives would indicate that, indeed, the third wave has already reached its peak.
-The bad news is in the deceased, who have added another 82. Andalusia remains for the third day above 80 deaths and, in just three days it has added 249 fatalities.
-A reflection of the contention of the third wave is that the cumulative incidence (AI) already drops significantly. This Thursday marks 877 compared to 915 yesterday . It is a decline that marks a new trend in the pandemic and seems to relax somewhat the rhythm of the third wave, which would have already passed the peak. German Panel Advises Against AstraZeneca Jab For Over-65s: Germany’s vaccine commission said Thursday it could not recommend the use of AstraZeneca’s coronavirus vaccine for older people, the latest twist in a row over the jab that has put Britain and the EU on a collision course.
The panel of scientific experts, called STIKO, said the vaccine should only be given to people aged 18 to 65 years old as “there is currently insufficient data to assess the efficacy of the vaccine for persons aged 65 years and older”.
AstraZeneca and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson immediately defended the jabs, which have already been widely used in Britain on older people.
AstraZeneca’s vaccine has not been granted approval yet for general use in the European Union. But the bloc’s medicines regulator EMA is poised to authorise it on Friday. Full article: https://www.ibtimes.com/german-panel-advises-against-astrazeneca-jab-over-65s-3132764

Bison Whisperers Wanted- bison rangers for woodland in the Garden of England: Conservationists in England are looking for the country’s first ever rangers to look after European bison, Europe’s largest land mammal, which is being introduced to Kent more than 15,000 years after its ancestors roamed the landscape.
The ideal applicant would need to understand animal behaviour, he said, but they were not expected to have worked with bison before, “because you can’t until now”. If not a stampede, there has certainly been a rush of applicants for the two jobs.
The bison, which will come from the Netherlands, Romania or Poland, will be kept in a near wild state, he said, helping to manage the woodland by their unique ability to fell trees by rubbing up against them and eating the bark, creating space for other species to thrive. Facebook beatdown- oversight board overrules company on most censorship cases in first test: Deciding its first-ever cases, Facebook Inc’s oversight board ruled on Thursday that the social media company was wrong to remove four of five pieces of content the board reviewed, including posts Facebook took down for violating rules on hate speech and harmful COVID-19 misinformation.
Facebook said it would abide by the board’s decisions. The group, which was created by Facebook in response to criticism of the way it treats problematic content, also called for the company to be clearer about its rules on what is allowed on its platforms. Apple CEO Tim Cook rails against ‘purveyors of fake news’ as Facebook feud rages on: Apple CEO Tim Cook took to the virtual stage of the Computers, Privacy, and Data Protection (CPDP) conference on Thursday, attacking social media sites for allowing the spread of misinformation – an apparent barb aimed at Facebook (FB), though he didn’t mention its name.
In his speech, Cook laid into algorithm-driven social media platforms, painting them as, “An interconnected ecosystem of companies and data brokers, of purveyors of fake news and peddlers of division, of trackers and hucksters just looking to make a quick buck.”
Cook’s appearance followed Apple’s announcement that it will soon launch a controversial privacy feature that gives users the ability to stop apps from tracking their activity to collect information for advertisers. The feature could hurt Facebook and other apps that benefit from targeted advertising dollars. China Begins Using Anal Swabs To Detect COVID-19 Cases!?!: Some Chinese cities are using samples taken from the anus to detect potential COVID-19 infections as China steps up screening to make sure no potential carrier of the new coronavirus is missed amid regional outbreaks and ahead of the Lunar New Year holidays.
Anal swabs require inserting a cotton swab 3 to 5 centimetres (1.2 to 2.0 inch) into the anus and gently rotating it. Last week, a Beijing city official said that anal swabs were taken from over 1,000 teachers, staffers and students at a primary school in the city after an infection had been found. Their nose and throat swabs and serum samples were also collected for testing. PHOTO: ChinaProctologyUnion. Recommendations & Requests

“Lost” deliveries from the UK: Our experience may explain the problems to which Naythan has referred. A package including winter clothes that we had sent from the UK in December has been listed as “lost” by the booking agent and the carrier for the whole of January. “Customer services” encouraged us to accept that it was never going to be delivered and to make a claim against the included insurance, but this would be honoured only for new items where we could produce the purchase receipt. We escalated it and it was found that the box is in a depot in Koln, Germany – where it has been since its delivery to Spain was stopped. The UK Government requires that it, along with other items that were in transit in December, is returned to the UK but have provided no instructions to the couriers as to the customs and other requirements that will have to be met. So it along with thousands of other failed deliveries remains in limbo whilst we shiver. James, Archez jamesdotmcculloch10@gmaildotcom

Earthquakes Update: A series of earthquakes shook Granada province, in southern Spain, on Tuesday night.
The first two were felt at 9.36pm in Santa Fe and in Chauchina, near the city of Granada, with registered magnitudes of 4.3 and 4.1 on the Richter scale, according to provisional estimates by the National Geographic Institute (IGN).
According to the IGN, a total of around 10 quakes with magnitudes above 2.9 were felt clearly between 9.36pm and 10.18pm in the city of Granada and its metropolitan area, which is home to around half a million people.
The Tuesday tremors come on top of a series of quakes to have recently hit the Granada area. UK imposes hotel quarantine for travellers from COVID-19 hotspots: The UK today announced people arriving home from 22 “high risk” countries will have to undergo a 10-day hotel quarantine at their own expense — taking a leaf out of Australia’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic — as the country tightens border controls to try to curb one of the world’s worst COVID-19 outbreaks.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the tougher new rules would apply to travellers from “red list countries where we have particular concern about new variants.”
Non-UK residents will be refused entry, while British citizens and permanent residents will be picked up straight from the airport and transferred to government-provided accommodation where they will begin their mandatory stay.
The announcement came a day after the UK yesterday reached the grim milestone of 100,000 coronavirus deaths — the first country in Europe to do so.
Johnson also said that travellers will be questioned as to their purpose for travel.
“I want to make clear that under the stay-at-home regulations it is illegal to leave home to travel abroad for leisure purposes and we will enforce this at ports and airports by asking people why they are leaving and instructing them to return home if they do not have a valid reason to travel,” he said.
UK Home Secretary Priti Patel later announced that people wishing to travel out of the UK will have to first make a declaration proving that their journey is essential.
It comes on top of the January 18 announcement that all travellers entering the UK, including British citizens, must present a negative COVID test taken within 72 hours of arrival. Prior to that date, the borders had been open with no test requirements.
The full list of 22 “red list” countries is still to be announced, but will include South Africa, Portugal and South American nations.
The new policy might take weeks to come into effect, as the new accommodations are not yet ready. References: https://www.9news.com.au/world/uk-imposes-hotel-quarantine-for-travellers-from-covid-19-hotspots/0e710a7c-1008-4c59-92fd-edaf15a6eeb6

Boris Johnson effectively extends UK coronavirus lockdown after delaying school reopenings: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson effectively extended a national coronavirus lockdown on Wednesday after ruling out a return to school for most students until at least March 8. The lockdown initially went into effect on Jan. 5 and was set to last through at least mid-February in an effort to combat a variant of the coronavirus that was rapidly spreading in the region.
But Johnson told lawmakers on Wednesday that the U.K. remains in a “perilous situation” with more than 37,000 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, nearly double the number during the country’s previous peak in April.
Johnson said the return date for students depends on the progress of vaccinating those in the four most vulnerable groups with their first dose by Feb. 15, and that he will release a “roadmap” for the “gradual and phased” easing of coronavirus restriction the week of Feb. 22. Merck discontinues work on Covid-19 vaccine candidates: Merck officials said the decision followed a review of phase-I clinical studies of its vaccine candidates. The data, the company said, showed the experimental vaccines were generally well tolerated, but the immune responses generated were inferior to those seen following natural infection and those reported for other Covid-19 vaccines. Fauci said it is ‘common sense’ to wear 2 masks to stop the spread of COVID-19: “If you have a physical covering with one layer, you put another layer on, it just makes common sense that it likely would be more effective,” Fauci said on NBC News’ TODAY. “That’s the reason why you see people either double masking or doing a version of an N-95.”
The type of mask you double up on will affect the level of protection it provides. For example, it’s better to use a double-layered cloth mask for the outside layer and a disposable surgical mask for the inside, rather than using two single-layered masks together. Light magnitude 4.2 quake hits 11 km southwest of Granada, Spain late at night: IGN reported a magnitude 4.2 quake in Spain near Granada, Andalusia. The earthquake hit late at night on Tuesday 26 January 2021 at 10:54 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Santafé (pop. 15,400) located 4 km from the epicenter, Armilla (pop. 21,400) 9 km away, Atarfe (pop. 15,400) 9 km away, Maracena (pop. 20,800) 10 km away, Albolote (pop. 17,100) 11 km away, and Granada (pop. 234,300) 11 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. (Granada has had at least 3 other smaller earthquakes and some aftershocks in the past 2 days. -Ed.)
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Jaén (pop. 116,600) located 69 km from the epicenter, and Malaga (pop. 568,300) 78 km away. iPhone News- The iOS 14.4 update is here, your iPhone’s camera and Bluetooth will get some sweet upgrades: Apple has released the new iOS 14.4 update on Tuesday. It’s not as significant as the iOS 14.3 update, but iOS 14.4 comes with improvements that iPhone and iPad users will appreciate, including camera app tweaks and Bluetooth advancements.
The iOS 14.4 update has increased the iPhone and iPad’s ability to “read” smaller QR codes, boosting the camera app’s QR code recognition.
Another update users will appreciate is the camera app’s ability to identify foreign components. In other words, if you get any of the iPhone 12 models repaired, and the repair technician uses non-Apple components to fix the camera (or parts repurposed from another iPhone 12 variant), you will receive a notification that says the device is “unable to be verified as a new, genuine Apple camera.” Full article: https://www.laptopmag.com/news/the-ios-144-update-is-here-your-iphones-camera-and-bluetooth-will-get-some-sweet-upgrades

EU citizens offered financial incentives to leave UK: From 1 January EU citizens have quietly been added to the government’s voluntary returns scheme where financial support is offered as an encouragement to return to their country of origin.
Payments can include flights and up to £2,000 resettlement money. The scheme is designed to help some migrants in the UK to leave voluntarily.
People working to help vulnerable EU citizens in the UK said the offer of money to return home contradicted the government’s claim that it was doing everything it could to encourage people to register for settled status. The deadline for Europeans living in the UK to apply for the EU settlement scheme (EUSS) is 30 June. Full article:

Brussels recommends isolating all areas with an incidence greater than 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants: {Translated from https://sevilla.abc.es} Updated: 01/25/2021 18:59
-The European Union has recommended this Monday that all areas be isolated that exceed a cumulative incidence of more than 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants . In addition, it proposes that member countries recommend that citizens not travel within and outside their borders due to the high incidence of coronavirus.
-The European Commission has proposed to member countries to strengthen the measures to limit travel between areas heavily affected by the pandemic , but without interrupting free movement within the European Union (EU), as well as a package of rules for arriving travellers. to the EU from abroad. As already agreed by the Heads of State or Government last Thursday, the Commission also considers it necessary to strongly discourage non-essential travel.
-The first recommendation is to add the dark red risk maps in addition to the already existing green, orange, red and grey. Dark red is reserved for areas where the virus circulates at very high levels, specifically those where the 14-day notification rate is more than 500 per 100,000 inhabitants .
-For people travelling from a dark red area , Member States should require a test before arrival and also undergo the quarantine recommended by the Health Security Committee and which is currently practised by several Member States. In addition, as countries have increased their testing capacity, they should also be required of travellers leaving areas that are not marked green on the European Center for Disease Control (ECDC) maps, that is, from the orange, red or grey. People returning to their own country or the one in which they reside should be able to have proof as soon as they arrive, even if they do so from outside the EU.
-In dark red areas, countries should strengthen non-pharmaceutical interventions, such as measures to encourage citizens to stay at home and the temporary closure of certain businesses, in addition to strengthening testing and tracing and to increase surveillance and sequencing of the cases.
-With regard to travel from outside the EU , the Commission proposes three specific measures: requiring travelers to undergo a negative PCR test before departure and a requirement for self-isolation, quarantine and contact tracing, as well as additional tests as needed over a period of up to 14 days. If the trip concerns an area where a worrisome variant of the virus has been detected, these measures would be more intense and the quarantine and additional tests would be mandatory. They should also require those entering the EU to submit a Passenger Location Form (PLF), if possible they agree on a common layout of this PLF.
Almost all of Spain “red zone”
-In Spain, most communities register rates much higher than the one named by Brussels. In fact, according to the latest report published by Health, only the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Asturias, Navarra and the Basque Country are below the barrier of 500 cases. Some even double or almost triple this figure . Extremadura has an incidence of 1,448 cases. They are closely followed by Murcia (1,332), Valencian Community (1,245), Castilla y León (1,215), La Rioja (1,208) and Castilla-La Mancha (1,158). The Spanish average stands at 800 cases. Junta activates ‘Plan 7,000′ in Andalucía in the face of ‘the worst data of the pandemic’: Andalucía’s ‘Plan 7,000’ to provide more patient beds and alleviate the pressure of coronavirus on the region’s hospitals will become a reality on Tuesday.
Junta’s spokesman, Elías Bendodo, expressed his deep concern at the “explosive” increase in infections with an “absolutely vertical curve” that has led Andalucía to register “the worst figures of the entire pandemic”, surpassing 7,000 infections this Sunday with 25 deaths and reaching a record number of hospitalisations, with 3,613 admissions, of which 517 are in intensive care. DoctorLaptop’s Tips #86, 26Jan21
-Emoji lovers, did you know Windows 10 has a huge collection of emojis built in? You can even change colors on some of them.
How do you access this “hidden” feature? It could’t be easier! When you are typing an email, document, whatever, and want to insert an emoji, hold down the Windows key (between the Ctrl and Alt keys) and press the period/full-stop key ( . ) . A box will popup where you may view all the emojis. Click the one(s) you want, it will be inserted into whatever you were typing.
-Windows 10 by default has 32 apps that autostart when you power up your computer! That is unnecessary, you can start apps when you need them. Turning off the apps you don’t need running in the background can help speed up your computer. Go to Settings>Privacy>In left side column scroll down and click on Background apps. There you can choose to disable all of them, or pick individually which ones to allow. You probably want to leave on Skype if you use that. I also suggest leaving on Windows Security.

Changes planned this year to rules for overtaking cyclists: Once the changes come into effect drivers will have to leave 1.5 metres or more between their vehicle and the cyclists when overtaking, and the maximum speed when overtaking should be 20km/h below the speed limit for the road. For example, if the speed limit is 90 km/h, the maximum speed for overtaking cyclists is 70 km/h.
At the moment, cyclists can be overtaken at the maximum speed limit for the road while leaving a distance of 1.5 metres.
To do so, as long as it is safe and there are no vehicles coming in the opposite direction, including other bicycles, it is OK to go over a solid white line. Full article: https://www.euroweeklynews.com/2021/01/26/changes-planned-this-year-to-rules-for-overtaking-cyclists/

Apple warns that iPhone 12 handset could be dangerous for some users: Apple has issued an extended warning that the additional magnets found in iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max as well as MagSafe accessories could pose a risk to people with pacemakers and defibrillators.
The company had previously acknowledged the potential for the magnets to interfere with certain implanted medical equipment, but has now gone further in explaining the risk and offering advice. Recommendations & Requests

Dave the Dance: We are sorry to hear of the passing of David Baker of Bristol, hitherto known as Dave the Dance. Dave was a good friend and neighbour to us when he lived in the flat below us in El Morche. Dave was the most unprejudiced person I ever knew, taking everybody at face value, whatever their colour, creed, status or sexual orientation. They were all just people to Dave, and he loved people, and the company of people. He would bend over backwards to help anybody out, giving them lifts, doing little DIY jobs. Its true that some took advantage of him but he shrugged it off, “I can’t help it,” he would say “Its just my nature”.
Our condolences to his devoted children and grandchildren at this sad time.
Carole & Bernie Hart, El Morche, carolemhart@yahoo.com

“Possible fake news warning” (Regarding an article posted in yesterday’s issue. Ed-): Spot-on Naythan… this seems to be typical Daily Mail sensationalised reporting.
According to the BBC News, Professor Van-Tam didn’t say anything of the kind. He just pointed out that vaccinated people could still spread the disease, and they should “continue to follow lockdown rules”. He added “it’s better to allow at least three weeks for an immune response to fully develop” in older people.

Andalusia adds more than 7,000 coronavirus infections for the fourth consecutive day: {Translated from https://sevilla.abc.es} Updated: 01/24/2021 17:32
-Andalusia has added another 7,070 new cases of coronavirus this Sunday. Thus, the community has already chained four days in which the number of infections does not drop below seven thousand, figures never before recorded during the pandemic.
-The third wave still does not reach its ceiling , it seems, and since the beginning of the health crisis, 361,523 Andalusians have already been infected, according to data from the Ministry of Health and Families.
-Malaga and Seville are once again the provinces with the most contagions in Andalusia. They are 1,614 and 1,262, respectively. They are followed by Cádiz (980); Almeria (830); Granada (830); Cordoba (713); Huelva (479); and Jaén (362) .
-In addition, this Sunday another 25 deaths from coronavirus have been recorded, so that have already died as a result of the health crisis 5,923 people in Andalusia . Although the figure is lower than yesterday, when 88 deaths occurred, it is usual for Sundays fewer fatalities to be reported on than the rest of the days of the week.
– Andalusia has 3,613 hospitalized this Sunday for coronavirus , the highest number since the start of the pandemic.
-In the ICU there is also no good news and 517 patients are already registered in intensive care, only 11 less than the peak of the second wave , when 528 were noted, the maximum of the health crisis. Spain opens 200 criminal investigations into care home pandemic flaws: Spain’s public prosecutor is investigating more than 200 cases of potential criminal mismanagement of the Covid-19 pandemic in nursing and old people’s homes, reported Reuters.
During the first wave of the pandemic in Spain last year, the virus spread uncontrollably throughout care home facilities.
The prosecutor’s office said nearly half of its investigations related to homicide through a neglect of duty of care. It is also looking into 21 cases of deficiencies in medical treatment.

Amazon UK Computer Purchase Alert: I order several computers a month from Amazon UK. If they are being shipped by Amazon they arrive; if they are being shipped by the seller using independent shipping services more often than not they get lost, with the shipper claiming the item was never received from the seller. Often the seller claims they were sent and blames me or the shipper for the problem. Then I have to go thru the process of recovering my payment. With the shipper and seller blaming each other, it can be very frustrating to sort the problem out with multiple emails, tracking traces and long distance calls. I have never had a “lost” item later found and delivered. This process can tie up those funds for weeks. To their credit Amazon eventually refunds the payment, but it still a serious inconvenience. DoctorLaptop, Torrox Costa.

Andalucía suspends vaccination this weekend pending the new doses against the coronavirus: {Translated from https://sevilla.abc.es} Updated: 01/23/2021 22: 22
-This weekend they are not getting vaccines against Covid-19 in Andalusia. The Board’s Department of Health and Families has had to suspend the administration of Pfizer doses during this Saturday and Sunday to be able to use the few reserves that it has left (around 25,000 doses) between Monday and Tuesday morning . With these vials residents and social health personnel of the nursing homes will be immunized.
-“We had to stop vaccinating on Saturday and Sunday to use the 10 percent” that has been kept as a strategic reserve during this Monday and Tuesday, explained this Saturday the Minister of Health and Families, Jesús Aguirre , during a visit to the Hospital Virgen Macarena University in Seville, where he has presented public investment projects for the improvement of healthcare and modernization of the healthcare complex.
-On Monday, 79,560 doses from the Pfizer and BioNTech laboratories are expected to arrive in Andalusia . They are less than the 96,000 doses that were expected, the counselor has lamented. The delivery will be received on Monday in Seville and Tuesday in Granada and the vials must be prepared to be able to administer the compound, since they reach 80 degrees below zero, he has detailed.
-Next Wednesday Andalusia will also receive 9,800 doses of Moderna’s vaccine . “They are few, but they are good,” commented the counselor. With these vials he hopes to “maintain the vaccination rate” in the coming days.
-During his visit to the Sevillian hospital, where he has been accompanied by the counselor of the Presidency, Public Administration and Interior, Elías Bendodo, Jesús Aguirre has made a review of the immunization campaign against Covid-19. He pointed out that Andalusia has received 251,420 doses through the central government, of which 221,635 have been administered until last Friday, almost 90 percent. “There remains that reserve fund that has dropped to 25,142 doses” that will be used for the second round in nursing homes for the elderly on Monday and Tuesday.
-The third wave is more “aggressive” than the first two. In fact, the peak of hospital admissions from the second onslaught of the pandemic has already been exceeded. At this time 2,522 Andalusians are admitted, of which 489 remain in the ICU. The peak of the second wave was reached on November 10 (3,478). “It is an almost vertical ascent and we do not expect it to decrease, but rather that pressure will continue to increase hospital in ICUs ” over the next two weeks, Aguirre warned.
-The counselor of the Presidency, Elías Bendodo, has wanted to settle the controversy around the surplus that remained in the Pfizer vaccines and that the Board requested authorization from the Government to be able to take advantage of it, so that instead of five doses, six of each container. He explained that the European Medicines Agency authorized its use on January 8 last and “from that day the sixth dose is extracted,” he said.
Ten million special syringes
-Bendodo has insisted that ” no vaccine dose has been wasted because since August we have had special 1-milliliter syringes” that allow us to make the most of the vaccines from this laboratory. The Ministry of the Presidency has provided the press with the invoice for the order of ten million special syringes made on August 21 for an amount of 950,076 euros.
-Of this purchase, 4.7 million units have arrived before the vaccination began on December 27. Bendodo has accused the PSOE of spreading “hoaxes” about the waste of vaccines on account of the anecdote of the “culillo” or surplus that the Minister of Health referred last Thursday in Parliament. Andalucía reached 3,522 hospitalized for coronavirus, the highest number since the start of the pandemic: {Translated from https://sevilla.abc.es} Updated: 23/01/2021 18:40
-Andalusian hospitals are in a delicate situation due to the coronavirus crisis. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health and Families, in the community there are already 3,522 hospitalized by Covid-19 , which is the highest number since the start of the pandemic , thus exceeding the peak of the second wave, which remained in 3,478 patients.
-In this way, Andalusia has added another 212 hospitalized this Saturday for coronavirus , so that the community has been adding hospitalized patients for more than 20 days. In addition, the increase in income has reached a sustained speed of more than 200 newspapers for a week, figures never seen before in the health crisis.
-In the ICU the situation is also serious. So much so that Andalusia is already less than 40 hospitalized from reaching the peak of the second wave, so far the highest in the pandemic. Then, in November, there were 528 patients admitted to intensive care. This Saturday there are already 489, with a growth rate of more than 20 daily hospitalized for a week.
-From the Board they do not hide their concern . The Minister of Health and Families, Jesús Aguirre, pointed out this Saturday that the situation is “serious.” The figures support it. This Saturday Andalusia has added 7,757 new infections, the third consecutive time this week that the community has registered more than 7,000 cases . It is also the second highest number of positives since the start of the pandemic.
-Malaga is once again the province with the most positives , with 1,737, followed by Seville with 1,354, Almería with 1,023, Cádiz with 990, Granada with 817, Córdoba with 700, Jaén with 644 and Huelva with 492.
*Deaths from coronavirus grow*
-The dead, as was foreseeable before the exponential escalation of infections, begin to grow. In this way, Andalusia has added another 88 deaths from coronavirus , the highest figure since the beginning of December. The most negative data is that this variable is not expected to decrease. Unlike. Deaths are likely to increase sharply in the coming weeks , the effect of the skyrocketing number of infections.
-With hospitals at maximum occupancy, infections in record numbers and deaths on the rise, the incidence rate, a kind of “thermometer” that marks the intensity and speed of the pandemic, also maintains worrying figures. So much so that Andalusia registers 836 cases for every one hundred thousand inhabitants this Saturday. To put this figure in context, it is enough to remember that last week that figure was less than half and, two weeks ago, about 150, almost six times less. [Possible fake news warning– no other major UK news sources are reporting this yet] UK Covid News- People who have received first Covid-19 jab must stay at home for THREE WEEKS, says Jonathan Van-Tam as urges them to keep following lockdown rules: People who have received their first Covid-19 jab must stay at home for three weeks after their injection because it can take that long for immunity to ‘kick in’, Professor Jonathan Van-Tam warned last night. He said that while getting vaccinated was ‘something to celebrate’, recipients of the jab needed to ‘stay patient’.
The caution of England’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer comes amid concern from Ministers that vaccinated people might start mixing with others or relax their social distancing too soon. News Correction: Yesterday’s article from Euro Weekly News, “Spain Won’t Welcome Tourists Until ‘The End Of The Summer” contained an incorrect interpretation of what Sanchez actually said. This mis-info has gone viral and is now in many social media and news articles.
After viewing the video of the speech I can confirm Sanchez never said no tourism until the 70% population vax level is reached, he said there would be tourism of progressively more tourists allowed as Spain approaches 70 % vaxed.
Thanks to reader F.K. for bringing this to my attention. -Ed.

The mayor asks citizens to voluntarily stay at their homes from 8:00 p.m. to contain the advance of Covid-19: {Translated from https://www.marbella.es} Updated January 22, 2021
The mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, today asked citizens to remain voluntarily in their homes from 8:00 p.m., instead of from 10:00 p.m. as the officially decreed curfew marks, as a measure to contain the advance ” exponential ”that the Covid-19 is registering in the municipality. The councilor, who has reported that the cumulative incidence rate for the last 14 days has risen to 984 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, has stressed that “this small effort can avoid more drastic restrictions in the future.” “We are in a particularly complicated time and probably we will not see the positive effect on some of these measures for 2 or 3 weeks, but without taking them we will not be able to save lives,” remarked the first mayor, who recalled that “one part of our productive sector, such as the hotel industry and commerce, which is suffering especially from this pandemic, already has to close at six in the afternoon “, so this early curfew” would also be a gesture of solidarity with all they”.

Exclusive- AstraZeneca to supply 31 million COVID-19 shots to EU in first quarter, a 60% cut: AstraZeneca Plc has informed European Union officials on Friday it would cut deliveries of its COVID-19 vaccine to the bloc by 60% to 31 million doses in the first quarter of the year due to production problems, a senior official told Reuters.
The decrease deals another blow to Europe’s COVID-19 vaccination drive after Pfizer Inc and partner BioNTech SE slowed supplies of their vaccine to the bloc this week, saying the move was needed because of work to ramp up production. Europeans urged not to travel as EU Commission proposes ‘dark red zones’ for Covid hot spots: The European Commission has proposed creating new “dark red zones” which would be subject to tight travel restrictions whilst Europeans have been “strongly discouraged” from all but essential travel within the EU as Covid-19 infections rise.
Speaking after an EU council video conference on Thursday, Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen insisted that internal borders must remain open for the single market to function but that members of the public should avoid travel. Full article:

If you instead accept this prompt by clicking the LET’S GO button this you are allowing the following:
-Windows will force you to use a Outlook.com or hotmail.com email address and password to log in.
-Windows will start 32 background apps every time you startup, slowing performance significantly, even if you previously disabled “background apps” from starting at every startup. (To check if you have 32 apps running in the background every time you startup do this: Settings>Privacy>scroll down left side column to Background apps and click it. Here you can choose what apps to let start automatically and disable the ones you don’t need. Or at the top of Background apps you can toggle a switch to disable them all.)
-Microsoft will scan and save all your data, including all your emails from all email servers, all documents you create in Word/Excel, and all communications from WhatsApp/Skype/etc. Basically you have given them permission to capture every keystroke you make!
-Microsoft will log and save your location history every time you startup.
Note: Microsoft has now admitted they are scanning and censoring all communications coming from Windows 10 computers. “Microsoft will ban ‘offensive language’ and ‘inappropriate content’ from Skype, Xbox, Office and other services on May 1, 2020, claiming it has the right to go through your private data to ‘investigate.” Reference: https://www.csoonline.com/article/3264658/microsoft-to-ban-offensive-language-from-skype-xbox-office-and-other-services.html

Welsh goalie breaks world record for longest football goal: Newport County’s Tom King officially broke the record for the longest goal scored in a competitive match, with a strike that covered an incredible distance of 96.01m, in a 1-1 draw against Cheltenham Town on 19 January.
King, who has received callups for the Welsh international team, booted the ball from his own six-yard-box, which was picked up by the wind and soared into the net just out of the reach of opposition goalkeeper Joshua Griffiths.
The previous record was held by Asmir Begovic, of Bosnia, which stood for seven years before King’s goal. Begovic scored that 91.9 m goal against Southampton while playing for Stoke City in the English Premier League, on 2 November 2013.
After the world record was confirmed, King said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have set the record.
