SPAIN

DGT UPDATE- This is the new smart assistant that will be mandatory in approved vehicles in July 2022, and all new vehicles in 2024: {Translation}
-In 2019, the last year with consolidated data, the DGT estimated that speed was one of the causes present in 23% of fatal accidents, where more than 300 people died. This is why, following the recommendations of international and European organisations, the DGT has been carrying out a speed monitoring and control campaign since July last year.
***New system***
-Along the same lines, this year new measures have been adopted and new vehicles homologated (approved?) in Europe from 2022 onwards, plus new vehicles sold from 2024 onwards, must be fitted with the intelligent speed assistant ISA (Intelligence Speed Assistance), which warns the driver when he/she exceeds the legal limits.
-It should be noted that this regulation has been brought forward to all new cars from July 2022.
-However, it is important to note that this intelligent speed system can be switched off and does not permanently limit speed. According to the DGT, ISA uses the traffic sign recognition system to read the speed limits of the road on which we are driving. This information is passed on to the adaptive cruise control so that the speed limit is not exceeded and the speed is automatically modified.
-This intelligent speed system, according to its manufacturers, has a margin of error of 10% in complex situations such as adverse weather, sections of roadworks or even parallel roads. That is why the driver always has the last word, which is why the system can be switched off. However, the DGT’s long-term goal is for it to remain active at all times.
***Other new mandatory features***
-However, the ISA system will not be the only mandatory safety assistant in 2024 or July 2022 for new type-approved models. At the same time, new driving assistance systems aimed at reducing the number of fatalities will come into force. These new systems are:
– Fatigue and Attention Detection Assist
– Blind Spot Assist
– Lane Keeping Assist
– Rear Seat Belt Warning
– Reversing detection
– EDR (Event Data Recorder): black box
– Automatic emergency braking
– Tyre pressure

Social Security- “We are close to collapse, it is almost impossible to give appointments to citizens”: The workers of the Social Security are setting off all the alarms. CCOO, UGT and CSIF denounced a few days ago “the unsustainable situation” of the public body that manages benefits as important as pensions, childbirth permits (former paternity and maternity), the minimum vital income and disabilities, among many others. “It cannot be that it is almost impossible to give appointments to serve the public,” denounces Ignacio Galán, from CCOO. EUROPE

Europe recommends the fourth Covid vax dose only for people over 80 years old: The European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) consider that it is “too early” to recommend a fourth dose (second booster) against covid-19 for the whole population.
-At the moment, the two European organizations recommend the 4th only for those over 80 years of age after studying the data on the increased risk of serious illness in this age group and the protection provided by a fourth dose. But below that range, the European agencies say, “there is currently no clear evidence in the European Union that the protection of the vaccine against severe disease is substantially diminishing in adults with normal immune systems aged 60 to 79 years and, therefore, there is no clear evidence to support the immediate use of a fourth dose.”

HEALTH

NGOs and doctors denounce that the new Spanish Health Law does not correct the “gaps” that allow health exclusion: More than 300 social organizations, scientific societies, groups and 1,400 health professionals have asked the Ministry of Health this Thursday, coinciding with World Health Day, to “put a definitive end” to the health exclusion that “thousands of people live in Spain and that began just 10 years ago with the approval of Royal Decree-Law 16/2012”.
-The document states that in Spain access to public health care was guaranteed to the entire population with the General Law of Public Health of 2011. In the case of foreigners, this access was recognized with the only requirement that they live in Spain, regardless of its administrative situation. “Spain was thus at the head of Europe with a fully universal public health system, despite having one of the lowest health costs in our environment”, the spokespersons have pointed out.
-However, they blame Royal Decree-Law 16/2012, approved during the PP Government of Mariano Rajoy, for the “profound change” in the configuration of the health system and its population coverage, “removing this right from thousands of people from unjustified way”. TECH

Magic Keyboard for iPad review- Is Apple’s Magic Keyboard for iPad worth splashing out on?: Apple’s Magic Keyboard for iPad is a reliable and decent keyboard for your iPad Pro or iPad Air. Typing on it is comfortable and the case does a good job of protecting the iPad from any knocks. The viewing angle is decent for most purposes although artists may find a dedicated iPad drawing stand better for their needs. It’s an expensive add-on, and also quite heavy, so it’s only worth buying if you know you’re going to use it a lot, and don’t mind the extra weight. Photo:Feature. COVID

Spain plans to end the mandatory wearing of coronavirus masks indoors later this month: The exact details have not yet been finalised but the government is due to approve the law change on 19 April – and it could come into effect as soon as the following day. However, the face covering will still be required in hospitals, residences and on public transport.
Expressing an opposing view, the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, says this should not be done for at least “a month and a half” after Easter and the April Fair in Seville, because it is possible that there will be a significant increase in cases because of the crowds. EUROPE

Breaking ranks with EU, Hungary says ready to pay for Russian gas in roubles: Hungary will pay for shipments in roubles if Russia asks it to, Prime Minister Viktor Orban told a news conference on Wednesday in reply to a Reuters question. Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto earlier said that EU authorities had “no role” to play in its gas supply deal with Russia, which was based on a bilateral contract between units of Hungarian state-owned MVM and of Gazprom. Germany U-turns on ending mandatory isolation: Germany will not end mandatory isolation for most people who catch COVID-19, the health minister said on Wednesday, reversing course after concerns were raised that lifting quarantine restrictions would suggest the pandemic was over.
“Coronavirus is not a cold. That is why there must continue to be isolation after an infection,” Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said on Twitter, adding he had made a mistake by suggesting an end to mandatory quarantine. Ukraine urges citizens to leave Lugansk, Donetsk and Kharkov in the face of possible Russian offensives: {Translation}
– Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk on Wednesday called on the residents of Lugansk, Donetsk and Kharkov to leave these places in the face of a possible new Russian offensive after being expelled from Kiev and Chernobyl.
-“It is necessary because the population will be under fire and under threat of death. They will not be able to do anything and we will not be able to help because it will be almost impossible to stop the fire. It is necessary to evacuate as long as there is such a possibility,” Vereshchuk said in a statement.
-Vereshchuk explained that the Ukrainian military forces deployed in these regions have begun to warn residents and wanted to reassure the population that the government “is doing everything possible to ensure that the evacuation is organised”.
-He warned the population that they “must be prepared” for a new escalation of hostilities on the part of Russia.
-“The withdrawal of the occupying troops from the Kiev and Chernobyl regions was not a gesture of goodwill before the next round of talks, as Russian officials are trying to present”, but a sign of “the iron will of our army, government and the entire Ukrainian people”, he stressed.
-On Wednesday it also became known that eleven new humanitarian corridors have been opened, several of them from the city of Maripol to the city of Zaporiyia and also from Berdyansk to Zaporiyia, from where buses will be chartered to leave the region, Ukrinform reports. Golf News- Five Things to Know for the first round of the Masters: #1. Augusta National is ever-evolving. Changes are made to the famed layout on an annual basis. Sometimes they are subtle. Not this year. Two of the most famous holes on the second nine underwent dramatic changes, while tinier tweaks were made to three more holes.
The biggest changes came to the hole that serves as the introduction to Amen Corner, the long par-4 11th that is traditionally the second-hardest hole on the course. The renovations are expected to make one of Augusta National’s most difficult holes even harder. Photo:Getty. Golf News- Mickelson opted out of Masters, Augusta National chairman says: Three-time champion Phil Mickelson, embroiled in controversy over his comments on a Saudi-backed rival league to the PGA Tour, opted not to play in the 86th Masters, Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley said Wednesday.
“I would like to say we did not disinvite Phil,” Ridley said in answer to a question at his pre-tournament press conference.
“Phil is a three-time Masters Champion and is invited in that category and many other categories — he’s the defending PGA Champion.”
Mickelson won last year’s PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, becoming the oldest major winner in golf history at age 50. Photo:DON EMMERT. Full article: https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20220406-mickelson-opted-out-of-masters-augusta-national-chairman-says

“Cash App” hacked: Block advertises Cash App as “the easiest way to send money, spend money, save money, and buy cryptocurrency.” The breach is said to have occurred last year on December 10, 2021, with the downloaded reports including customers’ full names as well as their brokerage account numbers, and in some cases, brokerage portfolio value, brokerage portfolio holdings, and stock trading activity for one trading day.
It’s exactly unknown how many users were impacted by the breach, but Block – which said it discovered the incident only recently – said it’s contacting roughly about 8.2 million current and former customers as part of its response efforts. FINANCIAL

EU Targets Spain, Malta, Germany Over Tax Rule Breaches:
The Commission argues that the design of the Spanish regulations prevents citizens and companies from outside the country, from paying their taxes. This is because the Spanish tax legislation requires that banks must be classified as “collaborating entities” to be able to make these payments.
The system is according to the Commission in contravention of the regulations that govern technical and business requirements for transfers in euros. Full article: https://euroweeklynews.com/2022/04/06/brussels-warns-spain-tax-payment-legislation-illegal/

OTHER

Is Picasso being cancelled?: There were two wives, at least six mistresses and countless lovers — with a tendency to abandon women when they became ill, a voracious appetite for prostitutes, and some eye-popping age differences (his second wife was 27 when he married her at 79).
-Some of the quotes attributed to him would probably cause Twitter’s servers to combust if he said them now (“For me there are only two kinds of women: goddesses and doormats”).
-None of this is new — it has been recycled through books and articles from (sometimes traumatised) family members since soon after his death in 1973.
-In a post-MeToo world, it poses a challenge for those who manage his legacy. “Obviously MeToo tarnished the artist,” said Cecile Debray, director of the Picasso Museum in Paris. But she added: “The attacks are undoubtedly all the more violent because Picasso is the most famous and popular figure in modern art – an idol that must be destroyed.” Full article: https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20220406-is-picasso-being-cancelled

Halting Erosion Using Vetiver Grass from Vetiver Spain:
Vetiver Grass is a fast growing non-invasive clumping grass that grows to 2 metres in height. It has a root system that grows to 3-4 metres deep and they are very strong.
The National Geographic Magazine has called them “Roots of Steel”.
Once Vetiver is established it is drought resistant.
We are located in Sayalonga and we can plant all year round but February and March are the best months to plant Vetiver. Vetiver loves the heat of a long summer to get established.
Decomposing Vetiver used as a mulch, improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away as it is a natural insect repellent. It is in the same family as Lemon Grass, which we also carry.
Vetiver also is a nutritious and replenishable animal feed. Horses, cattle, and pigs love it.
We use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive Ornamental hedge.

Recommendations & Requests

Have Your Say- Do You Want The EU to Extend Authorization for the Universal EU COVID Passport Another Year?:
-Although the media cleverly keep it a secret from us, the European Parliament is about to vote for universal mandatory EU covid passports. You will find the documentation in the appendix.
-However, EU citizens have the right to send feedback, opinions and comments by 8 April 2022. The European Commission publishes all comments received on its website and analyzes them after the deadline.
-Anyone who is interested in expressing (again, politely and factually necessary) disagreement can do so. Nerja, Torrox, Vélez-Málaga and Rincón de la Victoria, among the municipalities most affected by the storm in Malaga: {Translation}
-The coastline of Nerja, Torrox, Vélez-Málaga and Rincón de la Victoria (practically the entire Costa del Sol-Axarquía) is one of the most affected in the province by the storm. The Coastal Demarcation has made an initial assessment, as the storm is still active, although with less intensity. The sub-delegate of the Government in Malaga, Javier Salas, has been in initial contact with the mayors of the most affected coastal municipalities on Tuesday to analyse the main damage caused by the storm.
-Practically all the beaches of all the coastal municipalities in the province have been affected, from the most easterly to the most westerly. Earlier today, the president of Tourism and Planning Costa del Sol, Francisco Salado, called on the Government to declare the Malaga coastline affected by the strong easterly storm of the last few days a disaster area, and expressed his “serious concern” about the significant damage that has occurred and continues to occur on the beaches and promenades of the province.
-As far as Nerja is concerned, the beach of La Torrecilla has been overturned and sand has been lost on the beaches of El Chucho and Playazo. The Playazo, Chucho and Torrecilla coastal path has also been affected. In Torrox there is erosion of the central area of Ferrara beach and a reach to the promenade in the same area. Similarly, erosion and steps on the beaches of Peñoncillo and Calaceite and loss of sand and the appearance of longitudinal steps on the beaches of Los Llanos, El Morche and Peñoncillo. At Algarrobo beach there is occasional loss of fine sand and the appearance of longitudinal steps in the coves between breakwaters, as well as stony material dragged by the sea.
-In the municipality of Vélez-Málaga, the beaches of Torre del Mar, El Mortero and Chilches have also lost sand, with the appearance of longitudinal steps. The breakwaters of the Chilches resort and the coastal path have been affected. The water supply infrastructures in Chilches have been broken and have disappeared, as well as damage to the sewage system. The road was also affected in Chilches, Mezquitilla and Lagos. In addition, heavy flooding of the seafront promenade in Torre del Mar and the surrounding roads. Also in the beach establishments of Caleta de Vélez.
-In Rincón de la Victoria, loss of sand and height, as well as the appearance of longitudinal steps on the beaches of Cala del Moral, Rincón and Los Rubios. Affection of the coastal path from Benagalbón to Vélez. Also, erosion in the area of Los Rubios/Arroyo Santillán, which has caused the appearance of the remains of water supply pipes. The beach bars in the municipality have been reached. The waves have reached the promenade of La Cala and have partially flooded it. EU bans Russian coal imports in fifth round of sanctions targeting banks and Putin’s war machine:
-The European Commission has announced new sanctions against Russia in the wake of alleged war crimes in Ukraine, with measures including a ban on coal imports and targeting banks, shipping and computer chips.
-The new sanctions, set to be the fifth by the EU since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the invasion in February, are aimed at choking key areas in the economy, including the country’s military capabilities.
-While the measures do not yet cover Russian oil or gas, which some EU members say are essential for their own economies, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU was “working on additional sanctions, including on oil imports.” Full article: https://inews.co.uk/news/world/eu-bans-russian-coal-imports-in-fifth-round-of-sanctions-targeting-banks-and-putins-war-machine-1558077

Is There a New COVID Variant? Omicron XE Explained: The hybrid COVID variant known as XE has sparked headlines over the past week, but experts have warned people not to get unduly concerned, and the variant isn’t even particularly new.
-XE is known as a recombinant, meaning it is essentially a mixture of two different viruses or variants with characteristics of both. Specifically, XE is a mixture of the two Omicron variant sub-types BA.1 and BA.2.
-Recombinants occur when a person is infected with two different viruses, such as variants of COVID, at the same time, causing the viruses to mix when they replicate. Full article: https://www.newsweek.com/new-covid-variant-xe-omicron-recombinant-explained-ba-2-1695079

Tiger Woods says he’s planning to play the Masters:
Tiger Woods says, for now anyway, he’s planning to play this week in the Masters, a little more than a year after nearly losing a leg in a car crash.
The five-time champion at Augusta National made the announcement Tuesday morning. He will play nine more practice holes on Wednesday before making a final decision, but will be doing so with the intention of playing Thursday.
“As of right now,” Woods said, “I feel like I’m going to play.”
Woods was asked if he believes he can win this week. “I do,” he said.
“I can hit it just fine,” Woods added. “I don’t have any qualms about what I can do physically from a golf standpoint. It’s now, walking’s the hard part. This is not an easy walk to begin with. Now given the condition that my leg is in, it gets a little more difficult. And 72 holes is a long road. It’s going to be a tough challenge and a challenge that I’m up for.” Full article: https://apnews.com/article/tiger-woods-sports-john-daly-augusta-the-masters-042a4f716e29141085aaa6b2083df41a

TECH

A Better, More Relevant Web Search by Mojeek- Independent and Unbiased Search Results, Free of Google & Bing Manipulation:
-In today’s world, search engines are a necessity to find what you’re looking for online. Unfortunately, however, there are two big problems you will likely encounter: Search engines that violate your privacy, and search engines that censor search results.
-Mojeek is a crawler based search engine with its very own index of web pages, so we are not reliant on any other engine (e.g., Google, Bing) to produce our results. Our index is growing at an incredible rate, and as it grows the quality of results we return are improved. This means your experience using Mojeek also improves. Mojeek doesn’t have an agenda, and neither does it support any particular view, whether that’s in regard to politics or if blue is a nicer colour than green. And that’s the way we believe search engines should be. Our task is to provide you with relevant search results, not to force a point of view on you, or hide ones we don’t agree with.
-Search engine algorithms are often considered to be the most trusted source of finding information on the Web. However, a lot of search engines fail to provide their users with unbiased results. And many use algorithms to willingly alter them altogether. Sometimes they do this in the name of personalisation, or these days “fake news”, running the risk of going against the fundamentals of being unbiased.
-As mentioned in our article about GDPR, and the importance of privacy, these search engines use trackers to snatch snippets of personal information which make up your identity. Not only is this unethical (well we think so), in regards to search results it leads to the creation of a filter bubble. Because some search engines think they know what’s best for you, these filter bubbles are brought about by intricate algorithms which select and rank what you should see, or at least, what they think you should see based on your previous search history or sites you have visited. Because the filter bubble is invisible, it’s impossible to figure out the editorial basis on what gets censored and what doesn’t. Eric Schmidt said, people “want Google to tell them what they should be doing next”. Maybe that’s so, but that’s not what we want to do, so instead Mojeek provides an alternative that does the exact opposite.
-So why do we still need another search engine when there are other options, for example, DuckDuckGo and Startpage? Although we very much respect these alternative engines, they still rely upon a mainstream engines to provide them with their organic search results, which in turn come complete with the bias already present within those results or engine. DuckDuckGo uses Bing; Startpage uses Google. When you use Mojeek you don’t have to worry about first or second hand bias, our index has been created from the ground up, and our results are ranked according to our own algorithms and no-one else’s. Our algorithm ranks pages on what it thinks is the most relevant to the keywords you searched for, it doesn’t take into account what you’ve previously searched for, the sites you’ve visited, or even what we ourselves consider to be true or false. But even if we wanted to know who you were and alter your results accordingly, we can’t, as we do not record or keep that information on the people who use Mojeek.
-Mojeek uses “site clustering” in its results. Site clustering looks at search results and when there are multiple results from the same website, it chooses the most relevant one and hides the rest. If you do a Mojeek search, after you see the results, if there are multiple results from the same website, you may be offered the option to click at the bottom left of the page where it will say “without site clustering” to expose many more results, all from the same websites already in the results. This provides a “cleaner” returns page, that is simple to expand with one click. I was not sure if I would like this, but I now find this very useful. See pics below with site clustering on top, and without below.

Prozac in the Metaverse- Mental illness in the virtual world:
-Drunk on their success in transforming the modern world, Mark Zuckerberg and his Silicon Valley minions have decided to transform reality. Not satisfied with having irremediably transformed the social life of more than half the planet’s residents, these t-shirt-clad millionaires, after having set in motion Big Brother’s machines, now aspire to fully conquer consumers’ senses.
-Our experience of reality already teeters on the verge of stability each day, our perception altered by elements as natural as light, exhaustion, hunger and love. Some require meds just to cope. How far will our brain be able to handle our transit between two different worlds? SPAIN

Spain’s last striking hauliers call off their protest action, but only “temporarily”: The Platform for the Defence of the Road Transport Sector agreed on Saturday to “suspend temporarily” the protest action it began on 14 March, which led to supply problems in some sectors such as food. The decision was taken at a meeting in San Fernando de Henares, Madrid, which was attended by around 100 small and medium-sized businesses and self-employed hauliers.
-However, the Platform’s president, Manuel Hernández, said the protests would start again when the time was considered to be right. He told the assembly that “this is the time to be intelligent and to know how to manage our strength,” pointing out that the support for the strike had been enough to merit further action, which he said is something that will happen. “We have to organise ourselves better in the provinces and get ready so that in the near future we can act again, and with more force this time,” he said.

ANDALUCIA

Best cheese in the world is called Olavidia and it comes from Andalucía: March 27th was World Cheese Day, and how better to celebrate than with an award-winning cheese made in Andalucía’s Jaén province but with a Malaga DNA? The best cheese in the world is now officially Olavidia, made by the Quesos y Besos cheese producer, which has won the World Cheese Awards 2021. The judges awarded 103 points to this product, made with the milk of the Malaga breed of goat from the producers’ own farm.
-“The goats feed on broom, thyme, acorns, wild hay and olive leaves, and all of those those flavour the milk we use to make our cheese,” they explain.
-It is a cheese matured with mould and charcoal for a period of 15 to 20 days after being made with slowly pasteurised goat’s milk, which makes it really creamy. It also has olive stone ash inside and is square in shape, which captivated the jury. “It is an original cheese. From the beginning I was hoping to find something that would surprise me and it was definitely this one,” said one judge. Its striking and powerful smell of forest mushroom with soft goaty undertones and its semi-soft and creamy texture were other aspects that won it huge praise from the panel.
-Olavidia is sold in 250-300g pieces and should be eaten within three or four days because it contains no additives or preservatives. It costs around 14.95 euros in the company’s online shop, although at the moment there is none left and you have to put your name on a waiting list. It is also sold by some specialist websites and in the gourmet section of El Corte Inglés, although it tends to be snapped up very fast. Photo:SUR. MALAGA

Two cybercriminals arrested in Malaga for fraudulently selling pirate IPTV services: {Translation, summary}
-At the end of 2019, the investigation began and detected a website whose purpose was the illicit commercialisation of paid audiovisual content owned by LaLiga, as well as the complete content of a well-known on-demand television platform.
-Analysing the website, the agents observed that they were offering the possibility of subscribing to the television channels they were offering, the price of which varied depending on the duration of the package contracted and the number of devices on which the channels were to be played.
-In addition, they advertised their illicit services on social networks and on various online portals, where their publications had a large number of views. They even had a blog associated with them in which technical support was provided, simulating the customer service that any legal company can offer. (Yes, pirate IPTV services pretending to be legit companies are common on Fakebook and other social media. -Ed.)
-Further details are not available yet as the investigation proceeds. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/Detienen-ciberdelincuentes-Malaga-vender-contenido-audiovisual-pago-fraudulenta_0_1671433458.html

EUROPE

Russia maintains gas deliveries as Europe mulls tighter sanctions:
-Russia maintained gas flows through key pipeline routes into Europe on Monday, despite uncertainty over payment terms and as the EU said it would “significantly tighten” further sanctions against Moscow amid allegations of war crimes in Ukraine.
-Christian Lindner, German Finance Minister said, the EU must work towards cutting all economic ties with Russia over its “criminal” war in Ukraine but said an encompassing ban on all Russian energy imports would inflict more economic damage on EU member states than on Russia. Kremlin warns West- rouble-for-gas scheme is the ‘prototype’: President Vladimir Putin’s rouble payment scheme for natural gas is the prototype that the world’s largest country will extend to other major exports because the West has sealed the decline of the US dollar by freezing Russian assets, the Kremlin said. SPORTS

Football News- Natxo González Sacked as Malaga coach after just 10 Games, Replaced by Pablo Guede: The decision was made at the beginning of last week- unless a miracle happened in the game against Girona (it didn’t), Natxo González was to be sacked as head coach at Malaga CF. The choice was as clear as day for the club’s sporting director, Manolo Gaspar, who already knew the outgoing coach’s replacement: Pablo Guede.
-Gaspar was always open with González. The now ex-coach, whose restraint was one of his key features, slowly lost the confidence of most at the club, until he himself let slip his level-headedness: in the post-match press conference after a poor display against Huesca, González, who is no fool, all but said he wouldn’t survive the week. TECH

New TV Tech- Samsung’s innovative QD-OLED TV: Slated to ship next month in 65- and 55-inch sizes, the Samsung S95B 4K TV aims to boost the brightness of its OLED panel with red- and green-emitting quantum dots resulting (theoretically) in purer and more accurate colors. Existing RGB+W OLED panels, on the other hand, use white sub-pixels to boost brightness, which desaturate the colors.
The S95B comes with Samsung’s upscaling Neural Quantum Processor 4K, as well as 4K@120Hz and VRR (variable refresh rate) support for its four HDMI 2.1 ports. Look for Samsung’s QD-OLED-packing S95B to ship this month starting at $2,199.99 (the larger, 65-inch size sells for $2,999.99). Photo:Ben Patterson. Mars, Saturn and Venus will all be visible before sunrise and as the week wears on they will appear to get closer to one another. Recommendations & Requests

Recommendation: New Gym in Torrox Pueblo. Training Studio Torrox is a great new gym in Torrox Pueblo run by John D. (all languages spoken). It’s fully equipped, good classes too (pilates, yoga etc). Top quality equipment, lovely studios and a beautiful terrace for yoga and pilates. Rates are excellent, very competitive, either monthly or pay-as-you-go. Located in Calle Alta, parking in the large free car park is a 5-minute walk using the shortcut through the square. I’m really enjoying training there, using the gym for circuits and the pilates classes on the terrace are excellent – highly recommended! The website is https://www.trainingstudiotorrox.com/en/

Spain Far From European Fiscal Rules Limits, Dutch Try To Help Bend EU Rules: Spain and the Netherlands will present a joint document at the meeting on the review of these rules which, among other things, limits the maximum deficit that a Member State can reach to 3% and public debt to 60%.
These levels are far removed from the economic reality in Spain –with a deficit of 6.9% in 2021 and a debt that still exceeds 120% of GDP–, after the spending boom to deal with the coronavirus crisis and the impact of the war in Ukraine. -The warning from the Meteorological Centre precedes the instability that will start the week, when the weather will experience a change. Over the next few days, the effects of the cold air mass from very high northern latitudes known as the Ciril squall will be felt.
Maximum temperatures will be around 16 degrees, while minimum temperatures will remain at 10 degrees until Thursday, when the heat is expected to return.

Marbella couple warn of housing rental scam by fake post on Fakebook: On Sunday, February 27, they say they saw an ad on Facebook Marketplace showing a property available for rent in the area of Guadalmina, Marbella.  “We were excited at finding such a fantastic deal and it was an enormous blow to find out it was a scam.” She added: “I would like to warn everyone to be very careful.” She lost €2,700 to the scammer. She and her husband went to the address in Los Monteros on the date that had been agreed upon, but there was no sign of the woman who claimed to be the owner. They knocked on the door of the property that they had supposedly reserved with their deposit. The man who opened the door informed them that it was his house and it was not for rent, nor was it the first time that someone had come and asked about it. The devastated couple have since contacted the police, denouncing the alleged con artist and are now warning others not to fall for a similar housing scam. Full article: https://euroweeklynews.com/2022/04/02/marbella-couple-warn-of-housing-scam/

MOONETTE – Organic Skincare for Mature Skin
We are a Torrox-based company specialising in the creation of formulae which help prevent premature skin ageing. We are committed to making effective products at affordable prices.
Your skin health matters to us. How you feed your skin is as important as how you feed your body. Why settle for anything less than natural and organic?
As our skin is the first layer of our defence against microbial infections, ultraviolet radiation and environmental contamination it plays a vital role in our health. As we grow older, however, our skin becomes thinner, wrinkled, and more sensitive; hence it requires the use of treatments containing specific ingredients to the care of treating mature skin.
Recognising this need we have created a range of formulae which help
-slow down ageing process by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.
-improve facial complexion and eliminate blemishes.
At Moonette, we are passionate about health, beauty and plants. Your skin will benefit from the properties of botanic essential oils combined with a selection of nutrients for deep hydration, cell revitalization and antioxidant effect, all sourced from the finest natural ingredients with gorgeous fragrances.
Naturally, we care about our planet and feel the need to help reduce the sheer volumes of plastics waste that are generated daily around the globe. Presently, we are minimizing the usage of plastic materials in our production while seeking alternative forms of packaging. To help reduce pollution we are asking all local customers to recycle or reuse their Moonette skincare containers, and offering a small discount on future purchases to customers recycling containers.

Recommendations & Requests

Carole’s Book Nook: I have actually finished a new book this month, one I found very enjoyable, its called the Butterfly Garden. I take my Kindle out for a walk most days and read outside, sitting on a polystyrene square on one of the rock hard and freezing benches provided by Torrox Council. With the wind, sand, mud, cold, and rain we have been having it is a miracle I finished any book at all and have to confess my reading habits had to revert to reading indoors. Not ideal, but then needs must.
-The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison
This is a fascinating book (not for the squeamish) about an obsessive man and his son who collect young girls and keeps them, for years, as “butterflies” in a beautiful but locked garden. Not to give too much away the story is related from two angles, a FBI interrogation of one of the victims after they are found and released and the other from one of the butterflies herself. It is compelling, and different, if a bit too long. There are no chapters, just breaks between the two sides of the story, which makes it even more difficult to put down. I really enjoyed it and wouldn’t be surprised if it gets made into a film any time soon.
-My Family and Other Animals by Clare Balding
An enchanting autobiography by Clare describing her upbringing in a house dedicated to race horses (her father being a famous trainer) with her dotty relatives and experiences at boarding school, but mostly about her many pets. The writing is good and funny and the illustrations of all the animals are gorgeous. Anyone who likes dogs and horses and, for that matter, Clare Balding, will enjoy this thoroughly.
-69 for 1 by Alan Coren
Many years ago, in the late 70’s,a friend recommended Punch magazine to me. Now I only knew of Punch from dentist’s waiting rooms, an old fashioned mag that had been going for over a century. She said that the new, young editor was hilarious and had put a whole new slant on its content and appearance. Soon I was hooked, every article was brilliant, the cartoons were so funny, but the star of the magazine was the piece by the editor. That editor was Alan Coren. He could write in any style, Hemmingway, Shakespeare, The Bible and on any subject. This book is a collection of his pieces from the magazine. There were other books by him but this is one of only two that is on Kindle.

COVID

Covid Spain- ICU occupancy falls below 5% in the first data after the new changes in COVID data and statistics management: {Translation} 01/04/2022 17:55
-The Ministry of Health has published the first report of the new COVID-19 strategy. This not only puts an end to the daily notification of new infections or cases of cumulative incidence of the coronavirus, which for the last two weeks has been reported on Tuesdays and Fridays, but from now on the surveillance of the disease will focus on people “of greater vulnerability”.
-This Friday, Health provides the incidence rate of coronavirus in people over 60 years, which recorded 459.27 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, as well as reports 43,265 new infections since the last update on Tuesday. In addition, the percentage of occupancy in ICUs falls below 5%, which corresponds to a situation of ‘controlled circulation’, according to the latest COVID Traffic Light approved in November.
-With this new pandemic reporting formula, the aim is to update the report on a weekly basis, and the results of self-diagnostic tests will not be considered. Thus, surveillance will be based on “the notification of confirmed cases of people with or associated with vulnerability factors and severe cases”, as elDiario.es reported at the end of February. The aim is to transition from the “acute phase of the pandemic” to monitoring through ‘sentinel networks’, like those for influenza.
-The number of deaths from COVID-19 has risen to 102,541 since the start of the pandemic, with 323 deaths reported since Tuesday. Meanwhile, hospital data, which are reported in a similar way to previous reports, continue their downward trend: in addition to ICU occupancy, the overall occupancy of hospital beds by COVID patients falls from 3.52% to 3.34%, as does the total number of people admitted with coronavirus, which drops to 4,150.
-In terms of cumulative incidence, the new report now focuses on those over 60 years of age. Those over 80 years of age report an average of 534.68 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, while those aged 60-69 years have an incidence of 407.28 points. By autonomous communities, the regions reporting the highest incidence in the over 80s are the Canary Islands and Extremadura, with more than 1,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Covid Andalucia- Rate drops to 290.0 and 4,962 cases and 38 deaths recorded since Tuesday: {Translation} 01Apr22
-Andalusia has reported a total of 4,962 positives for Covid-19 registered in the last three days, while adding 38 deaths.
-The rate in the region stands at 290.9 per 100,000 inhabitants, down 28.6 points from Tuesday.
-The Andalusian regional government has switched to reporting twice a week – on Tuesdays and Fridays – on the situation of the coronavirus pandemic in the autonomous region, instead of daily as it did until last Friday.
-The 4,962 infections on Tuesday come after 6,568 on Tuesday, 5,129 on Friday, 5,433 on Thursday and 1,350 on Wednesday.
-By provinces, Malaga is still the one with the most positive cases with 1,323, followed by Seville with 823; Cadiz with 789; Cordoba with 582; Almeria with 433; Granada with 376; Huelva with 371 and Jaen with 265.
-Of the 38 deaths, 18 were in Seville, four in Malaga, Granada, Jaen and Cordoba; two in Almeria; and one died in Huelva.
-Andalusia has recorded this Friday a drop of 34 patients hospitalised by coronavirus compared to Tuesday to a total of 517, while ICU admissions have fallen by eight to 49.
-By provinces, Malaga is the one with the most hospitalised patients with 144 and six in ICU, followed by Seville with 96 and 13 in ICU, Cadiz with 79 and three in ICU, Jaen with 52 and nine in ICU, Cordoba with 49 and eight in ICU, Granada with 46 and four in ICU, Almeria with 29 and four in ICU, and Huelva with 22 and two in ICU.

SPAIN

Algeria does not rule out “recalculating” the price of gas sent to Spain: The Algerian energy company Sonatrach has warned this Friday of the possibility of “recalculating” the price of gas supply to Spain, within a context in which it anticipates “promising prospects” for European customers after the discovery of new deposits.
-The CEO of Sonatrach, Toufik Hakkar, has acknowledged in statements to the Algerian news agency APS that gas and oil prices “have skyrocketed” since Russia launched a military offensive on Ukraine on February 24.
-Algeria “has decided to maintain relatively correct prices for all its customers”, but Hakkar does not rule out this being the case in the future. “Recalculating prices with our Spanish clients is not ruled out,” he pointed out. ALMERIA

A 1,414 km pilgrimage is designed to cycle along the Mozarabic route: {Translation}
-The Diputación de Granada has published the first travel guide of the Mozarabic Way of St. James by bicycle, a pilgrimage proposal that invites you to travel the 1,414 kilometres that separate Almeria from Finisterre in 21 stages.
-The author, a teacher of Vocational Training in Fuente Vaqueros, proposes a journey with saddlebags from Almería to Finisterre, crossing the Iberian Peninsula diagonally over 1,414 kilometres in 21 stages.
-The guide, which includes a description of the routes on foot, aims to be an alternative pilgrimage for the growing number of enthusiasts who are calling for more cycle tourism routes.
-The idea of writing the travel guide came about in his native Almería, where in 2015 he established a relationship with the Jacobean Associations with whom he travelled on foot along many stages of the Mozarabic Way and saw the potential it could have for cycling. The result is a 370-page, full-colour book that he has self-edited and which will be sold in bookshops in Granada and through his Facebook page.
-The description of each of the stages includes a detailed map with profiles, gradients, distances, difficulties and detours. It also proposes accommodation, restaurants and visits of interest, and includes a descriptive text with the history of the places it passes through and their connection with the apostle St. James.
-The average daily distance is around 65 kilometres and the route runs along Jacobean paths, greenways and ten provinces until it reaches Santiago de Compostela and the epilogue towards Finisterre.
-“Almost 96% of the Jacobean routes are signposted for walking, but there are sections that are not in any other guidebook because I have made adaptations when the paths were not cyclable, because they were too hard or dangerous, looking for an alternative by road”, the author explained. -The oil company Cepsa has announced this Friday that it is extending its discount to 30 cents per litre of fuel at its service stations in Spain with its loyalty cards ‘Porque Tú Vuelves’, ‘Mastercard’ or ‘Carrefour’. In Spain, Cepsa has 1,500 service stations in Spain, of which 250 are in Andalusia, 54 of them in Seville.
-“This is a measure with immediate effect and is not conditional on future refuelling or payment via an App. This discount of 30 cents will be added to the promotions that Cepsa already offers through its loyalty programmes”, the company has clarified in a statement.
-On the other hand, the company will universally offer users who do not use the ‘Porque Tú Vuelves’ programme or Cepsa’s professional cards a discount of 5 cents in addition to that established by the Government, achieving a saving of 25 cents per litre.
-Company sources have indicated that “by refuelling at Cepsa you can save, in addition to the 20 cents per litre approved by the Government, an additional 28 cents with the loyalty cards”. GRANADA

Granada’s white villages will remain brown- experts call for clean-up to be halted: {Translation}
-Mud showers are expected until the summer. This is the forecast of experts in the field. The dust cloud from the Sahara will still pass through more than once over the next few months, at least until June, after what has already happened in recent weeks in the province of Granada.
-In between, the white villages of the Alpujarra have lost their main sign of identity and, after days of institutional requests to remove the brown from their façades, it seems that even this may not be lost.
-Jesús Párraga, professor at the University of Granada and director of the Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, pointed in the same direction when asked by this newspaper: “It all depends on whether it rains, and we are talking about April and May, which are traditionally rainy months. If it rains now, all that investment will almost certainly be lost”, the professor points out.
It is true, emphasises Párraga, that the meteorological situation is always highly variable and that “where we say A now, we can see B from one moment to the next”, but what is certain is that “there will be storms”. “We don’t know if it will be a real red rain like the one in March or less, but intrusions and the possibility of them happening is high. For years we have been seeing between 30 and 40 intrusions,” explains the researcher.
-As it is, the situation of the almost thirty villages in Granada, some as prominent as those of Barranco de Poqueira or Lanjarón, which asked for financial aid to return to the usual landscape for the tourist season, will not suffer any change beyond their own accounts.
-Despite the agility on the part of the Diputación in this matter, when it came to the activation of a fund of 900,000 euros for the cleaning of buildings and public spaces due to the haze, in the face of pressure from the municipalities, it seems to have been hasty.
-This investment, in fact, would have to be repeated if the rain of mud were to come again, with the added bonus that, as the mayoress of Bubión, Mari Carmen Pérez, commented, it is not expected that the clean-up will take place during the Easter season.
The aid would also be “insufficient”, said the mayoress, estimating that each house would need at least 3,000 euros.
-For his part, the professor from the University of Granada, insists on long-term solutions, such as reforestation or, in other words, stopping the desertification of the area, which would be making the arrival of the calima and the drop in air quality possible, in the end, a health problem “that is not being talked about enough”. EUROPE

Kremlin accuses the Ukrainians of launching a helicopter attack on a fuel depot on Russian soil: Ukraine denied responsibility for the fiery blast, but if Moscow’s claim is confirmed, it would be the war’s first known attack in which Ukrainian aircraft penetrated Russian airspace.
“Certainly, this is not something that can be perceived as creating comfortable conditions for the continuation of the talks,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Meanwhile, Russia continued withdrawing some of its ground forces from areas around Kyiv after saying earlier this week it would reduce military activity near the Ukrainian capital and the northern city of Chernihiv to promote trust at the bargaining table. Russia’s Gazprom exits German business amid crisis in energy ties:
-Russia’s Gazprom said on Friday it was quitting its business in Germany at a moment of crisis in the vital energy ties between the two countries in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The gas giant gave no details or explanation of its decision to terminate its participation in Gazprom Germania GMBH and all of its assets, which include subsidiaries in Britain, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.
-Gazprom has been in the sights of European Union regulators for months over allegations, which it denied, that it was holding back gas that could have been released to lower soaring prices. Sources said this week that its offices in Germany had been raided by EU antitrust authorities.
-“I think this means Gazprom is drawing a curtain on being an active participant in the European gas market. Essentially it is going home because it no longer feels welcome,” said Katja Yafimava, senior research fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies.
-The move further complicates energy ties between Russia and Germany, a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree to impose rouble pricing for gas on buyers from what Moscow considers unfriendly countries.
-German business daily Handelsblatt reported on Thursday that the German economy ministry was considering expropriating the Gazprom and Rosneft units in the country amid concerns about the security of energy supplies. In response, the Kremlin said on Friday that any such move would be a violation of international law, and later that day, Gazprom quit its German business division. Europe signals unity against Russian gas payment demands: Europe vowed to stay united against Russia’s demand that they pay for its gas in roubles, as the threat of an imminent supply halt eased on Friday.
-European capitals have been bracing for a disruption to gas imports as Russian President Vladimir Putin seeks retaliation over Western sanctions for the Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine. Some buyers and governments were working on ways to potentially pay for gas in roubles as Moscow in recent days has raised the spectre of cutting gas supply if its payment terms are not met.
-However, the European Commission said on Friday that those with contracts requiring payment in euros or dollars should stick to that.
-The Kremlin said on Friday it would not immediately turn off the taps to Europe as payments on deliveries due after April 1 come in the second half of this month and May. Iberdrola ALERT! – This is how the cybercriminals who have stolen Iberdrola’s data are going to try to ‘hack’ you: {Translation}
-Cybercriminals are still trying to hit the Spanish company. Iberdrola confirmed yesterday that on 15 March it suffered a hack that left the personal data of 1.3 million users in the air for a day. The energy company explained that the criminals had access to information such as “name, surname and ID number”, as well as email addresses and telephone numbers, according to other media reports. In principle, no bank details or electricity consumption data were obtained.
-Given the data to which the cybercriminals have had access, it is most likely that they will try to use them to create more targeted email or phone call cyber-scams. In this way, they could obtain banking information from affected users or trick them into making payments for fines or supposed services.
-“Mainly, they may start launching targeted campaigns, impersonating Iberdrola, for example. Those affected may start to encounter messages in the mail in which the criminals use the data collected to steal even more information by deceiving the user,” explains Josep Albors, head of research and awareness at cybersecurity company ESET, in a conversation with ABC.
-The expert adds that, by having information about the user such as name or ID number, the criminal can “generate greater trust in the user”. It is not the same if you receive an email from a third party telling you to change the login details of an account in which they call you, for example, “client”, as it is if they address you by your name and surname. The chances of the internet user believing that the communication is truthful, in this second case, increase.
-With this in mind, Albors recommends that users “be more suspicious when they receive e-mails, especially if they are from Iberdrola”. “If they have not already done so, it is advisable to change the passwords of their e-mails and the services they use on the Internet. They should also try to use two-factor authentication systems whenever possible”. This way, even if a cybercriminal has access to one of your passwords, they will not be able to access the account, as they would need a second code to get it. Volcanic activity may be the cause of “marsquakes” according to new data from the NASA lander: The authors of the study speculate that magma activity in the Martian mantle, which is the inner layer of Mars sandwiched between the crust and the core, is the cause of these newly detected Marsquakes, contrary to past beliefs held by scientists that these events are caused by Martian tectonic forces. The researchers used data collected from a seismometer attached to NASA’s InSight lander, which has been collecting data about Marsquakes, Martian weather and the planet’s interior since landing on Mars in 2018. Gas tariffs go up by 10% from today, double the amount announced by the government: {Translation}
-Regulated gas tariffs (TUR) will rise from tomorrow, Friday, by an average of 10% compared to those in force since 1 January, although the third vice-president of the Government and Minister for Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, said on Tuesday after the Council of Ministers that the increase would be a maximum of 5%.
-Curiously, the same figure was repeated this morning by the Secretary of State for Energy, Sara Aagesen, at an event with the energy sector and when the BOE had already published the new rates that come into force today after the corresponding quarterly review.
-The truth is that, as this newspaper has verified, the TUR 1 (annual consumption of less than 5,000 kWh) has increased by 9.24% (the variable part); TUR 2 (annual consumption between 5,000 kWh and 15,000 kWh), 9.94%; and TUR 3 (annual consumption between 15,000 kWh and 50,000 kWh), another 10.53%.
-In order to dilute the sharp increase in tariffs, the ministry headed by Teresa Ribera is only talking about an increase in the ‘annual bill’ of 6.93%, excluding taxes, for ‘average consumers’ of the TUR 1, TUR 2 and TUR 3 with respect to the current tariffs. Thus, the increase for TUR 1 consumers is 5.91%, 7.24% for TUR 2 and 7.92% for TUR 3.
-It should be remembered that the tariffs in force since 1 January have already risen by another 10% on average and were published on Christmas Day. Source, Spanish: https://sevilla.abc.es/economia/abci-tarifas-suben-10-por-ciento-desde-manana-doble-anunciado-gobierno-202203311623_noticia.html

La Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios (OCU) considers government measures to combat price rises insufficient: {Translation} 31Mar22 10:00
-The Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) considers the measures approved today by the Council of Ministers to mitigate the effects of the rise in prices and energy to be positive, but clearly insufficient, and calls for more forcefulness and speed in order to have a real effect on the battered economy of families.
-In the absence of a detailed analysis of the small print, to be published in the Official State Gazette, OCU considers that the measures announced, although positive, are clearly insufficient. An example of this is the announced reduction of 20 cents in fuel prices. According to OCU calculations, for an average household the reduction will mean a saving of €65 in the case of diesel and €75 in the case of petrol, over the next three months as a whole. OCU denounces that, despite the reduction, fuel prices will remain well above the prices we had at the beginning of the year. On the other hand, it calls for controls on fuel prices to prevent any anomalous price increases as a result of this measure.
-OCU believes that this reduction is insufficient and calls for the temporary suspension of all energy-related taxes. It recalls that it is the State which, in this exceptional situation, is the main beneficiary of the increase in fuel prices.
-With regard to electricity, the OCU considers that the measures known so far are not very ambitious and urges that their implementation be speeded up as much as possible. With regard to the extension of the number of families benefiting from the social voucher, OCU points out that there are currently many families who, despite meeting the requirements, do not access the social voucher due to a lack of information and the difficulties in accessing and maintaining it. For this reason, the OCU considers it a priority that, in addition to increasing the number of theoretical beneficiaries, the focus should be placed on facilitating access to the social voucher. To this end, it calls for the granting of the social bonus to be an automatic process.
-For OCU, the main problem revolves around electricity pricing, with a marginalist system that amplifies the effects of the spectacular rise in gas prices on international markets. OCU insists on the need to effectively decouple the price of gas from the price of electricity as the only way to produce an effective reduction in the electricity bill that affects consumers, but also the economy in general. OCU, in the absence of other long-term measures, proposes that the exceptional nature of the current situation be translated into a proposal for a maximum price for gas-fired generation plants of no more than 35-40 euros.
-In terms of rent, the OCU considers the announced measure of limiting the increase to 2% to be ineffective and difficult to implement. The Organisation believes that it would be more appropriate to establish aid for tenants in vulnerable situations in accordance with the minimum living income.
-For all these reasons, the OCU considers the announced measures to be clearly insufficient and calls for more forceful and immediate action. A temporary suspension of energy taxes and the necessary adjustments to reduce the price of electricity and avoid its impact on other products and services. Source, Spanish:

Unvaccinated UK Travellers Can Now Enter France Under Facilitated Rules: Under the new rules, UK nationals who have not been vaccinated against the COVID-19 disease will be permitted entry to France as long as they present a negative test result taken recently. The French Ministry of Interior explains that the country accepts both PCR and rapid antigen tests. This means that unvaccinated Britons can either present a PCR test taken within the last 72 hours or a rapid antigen test taken within the last 48 hours in order to be permitted entry to France without having to meet any other additional measures. EUROPE

Putin tells Europe- pay in rubles or we’ll cut off your gas: Putin said the switch to rubles would strengthen Russia’s sovereignty. He said the West was using the financial system as a weapon, and it made no sense for Russia to trade in dollars and euros when assets in those currencies were being frozen.
-“What is actually happening, what has already happened? We have supplied European consumers with our resources, in this case gas. They received it, paid us in euros, which they then froze themselves. In this regard, there is every reason to believe that we delivered part of the gas provided to Europe practically free of charge,” he said. “That, of course, cannot continue,” Putin said, although he said Russia still valued its business reputation and would continue to meet obligations in its gas and other contracts.
-Under the mechanism decreed by Putin, foreign buyers would use special accounts at Gazprombank to pay for the gas. Gazprombank would buy rubles on behalf of the gas buyer and transfer rubles to another account, the order said. Formula 1 News- Las Vegas to host night time F1 Grand Prix in 2023: Las Vegas will bring its glitz and glamour to F1 from next year with the addition of a night race to the calendar – meaning the US will host three events in 2023.
The Grand Prix joins Austin, Texas and the new Miami race – which makes its debut this season – in what will be a unique event which shakes up the standard weekend.
The race itself will be held on a Saturday evening instead of the usual Sunday to make the most of possible TV viewership, and it is possible the lights will not go out until 10pm local time – meaning fans in the UK would be able to watch in the early hours of the morning.
The finer details are yet to be announced, but it is reported that the Grand Prix will be held in November, possibly to coincide with the Thanksgiving weekend.
Vegas has already hosted races in 1981 and 1982, but this will be the first time it will take in the main sights of the desert city, featuring the iconic Vegas Strip. Photo:@pegsguy.
