Concert: The Dulzainas Cajoneras Orchestra will perform in Nerja at the Balcón de Europa next Sunday, 13 November, from 13:00, as part of their tour of the province of Malaga.

Bars and restaurants across Spain to protest at high energy bills on Tuesday:

Spain Introduces New Visa for Foreign Start-Ups & Digital Nomads, Reduces Taxes for Them: The Spanish Parliament has approved the new law for start-ups and digital nomads, which regulates who is eligible for this visa and anticipates reducing the Corporation Tax for these categories from 25 to 15 per cent in the first four years of their stay in Spain. According to local media, the new law enabled anyone from the EU or third countries that haven’t been a resident in Spain in the last four years to benefit from a special visa which can be renewed for up to five years.
– By the end of the month, it is expected for the government to determine the exact requirements and conditions for digital nomads, including the minimum amount they have to earn, although the amount is expected to be approximately €2,000 per month.

Police in Spain seize largest amount of marijuana on record:
– The Spanish Civil Guard said that it seized well over 30 tons of marijuana. The raids were carried out in the cities of Toledo, Ciudad Real, Valencia and the region of Asturias. Police said the gang dried the marijuana plants, packaged them and sent them to parts of Spain, Switzerland, Holland, Germany and Belgium.
– Dubbed “Operation Gardens” by law enforcement, police conducted raids on a series of farms and production plants across Spain. Twenty people, nine men and 11 women, between the ages of 20 and 59 were arrested in total.

– Schools and nurseries in Malaga province are reporting a wave of new cases of hand-foot-and-mouth disease, a mild, contagious viral infection which is common in young children. The condition is often found in the spring and autumn, but doctors say at present it appears to be rampant.
– Doctors say there is no need to panic. This is an illness which tends to disappear within a week to ten days. There is no specific treatment, so the children are normally given the usual medication to reduce discomfort.

Germany Launches Unlimited Ticket for Trains, Buses & Trams for only €1.60 a Day:
– The German authorities have officially announced that the country will launch a €49 ticket – equivalent to around €1.60 a day – valid for trains, buses, and trams. According to Deutsche Bahn, the country decided to introduce the Deutschlandticket as a permanent season ticket following the success of the €9 tickets offered earlier this year.
– The new ticket, which is expected to be launched as soon as January 1, 2023, will enable Germany-wide journeys in public transport as well as regional rail transport of all participating transport companies. Orange Espana Hacked- Announces Data Breach of Customer Info: {Translation}

Mandatory training and insurance- the new prerequisites coming for dog ownership in Spain: {Translation}
– A free and compulsory training course and civil liability insurance to cover any damage caused by a dog will be required throughout Spain in order to own a dog once the future Animal Protection and Welfare Law has been passed, experts have confirmed.
– The law, which is still in parliamentary procedure, indicates that people who already have a dog when it comes into force will have two years to complete the course, while those who want to have one will have to complete the training, which will be valid indefinitely, before adopting the animal.
– The compulsory nature of the course “will facilitate responsible ownership” because “many times people are not aware of the responsibility involved”, said Royal Canin’s communications manager, Carlota de Lucas.
– In principle, the law specifies that the course will only apply to dogs, but Díez believes that “it should be compulsory for all pets”, without excluding any pet, from cats to turtles or canaries, among others.

Tough Gigs In France- Smashing Burritos drummer Eric, 58, has fatal heart attack on stage in France just 3 weeks after Haitian singer Mikaben died at 41 after collapsing on stage in Paris : {Translation}

The date on which pensions will go up by an average of 100 euros per month: {Translation}
– Pensions will rise by 8.5% from 1 January 2023. This is the estimate announced by the government, which will mean around 100 euros more per month on average. It will be the highest increase in history and the most expensive for the State (and tax payers!): it will spend 17,000 million euros just to update benefits in line with the CPI.
– Taking into account the level of the current average pensions offered by the Social Security, retirees will receive an average of 107 euros more per month, that is, about 1,500 euros more in the whole of next year. Their average pension will stand at 1,364 euros.

Consumer Affairs urges people to take precautions to avoid irregular practices by electricity suppliers: {Translation}
– Consumo Responde stresses the importance for consumers and users to take the utmost precautions when contracting electricity supply in the free electricity market, especially when receiving commercial calls from companies.
– This advice is more necessary than ever after learning of various irregular practices by energy supply companies, as stated in one of the latest resolutions of the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC), a body that has found that a number of marketers have carried out “acts of deception and confusion” to attract customers from other electricity and gas marketers, with “thousands of users affected”, many of them elderly people, which is why they have been imposed a significant penalty.
– In this resolution, different strategies are found to have been carried out, such as: the attempt to attract customers by pretending to be their usual company; the communication to consumers of a supposed update or renewal of the tariff, pretending to be their usual company; the offer of supposed discounts on the tariff, assuring that they would remain linked to their usual company; the communication of a supposed mandatory change of supplier due to a supposed disappearance or change of name of their usual company; or the communication of a supposed change of billing or distribution company.
– Consumo Responde exposes the proliferation of commercial campaigns, sometimes aggressive and invasive, by free market suppliers or other companies that act through them, i.e. subcontractors. Toxoplasmosis- Why is the cat parasite spreading so successfully among humans?: {Translation}
– A study led by researchers at Stockholm University in Sweden has discovered how the Toxoplasma parasite spreads so successfully in the body, for example to the brain, that it is carried by a large part of the world’s population. Researchers have found that the parasite infects immune cells and hijacks their identity, they report in the journal ‘Cell Host & Microbe’.
– To fight infection, the various functions of the body’s immune cells are tightly regulated. Scientists have long wondered how Toxoplasma manages to infect so many people and animal species and spread so effectively.
– “Now we have discovered a protein that the parasite uses to reprogramme the immune system,” says Arne ten Hoeve, a researcher at the Department of Molecular Biosciences at the Wenner-Gren Institute at Stockholm University.
– The study shows that the parasite injects the protein into the nucleus of the immune cell and thus changes the cell’s identity. The parasite tricks the immune cell into thinking it is another type of cell. This changes the gene expression and behaviour of the immune cell. The Toxoplasma causes the infected cells, which should not normally travel through the body, to move very quickly and thus the parasite spreads to different organs.
– The phenomenon has been described as Toxoplasma turning immune cells into roaming Trojan horses or “zombies” that spread the parasite. The newly published study offers a molecular explanation for the phenomenon, and also shows that the parasite is much more selective in its spread than previously thought.
– Toxoplasmosis is probably the most common parasitic infection in humans worldwide. Toxoplasma also infects many animal species (zoonosis), including our pets. The WHO has estimated that at least 30% of the world’s human population carries the parasite. Studies indicate that 15-20% of the Swedish population carry the parasite (the vast majority unknowingly). The incidence is higher in other European countries.
– Felines, and not only domestic cats, occupy a special place in the life cycle of Toxoplasma: only in the cat’s intestine does sexual reproduction take place. In other hosts, e.g. humans, dogs or birds, reproduction takes place by division of the parasite.
– It is spread through food and contact with cats. In nature, the parasite spreads preferentially from rodents to cats to cats to rodents and so on. The parasites are “dormant” in the brain of the rodent and when the cat eats the mouse, they multiply in the cat’s intestine and come out through the faeces. The parasite ends up in vegetation and when the rodent eats the vegetation it becomes infected. Humans become infected by eating meat or by contact with cats, specifically their faeces.
– The parasite causes the disease toxoplasmosis. When a person is first infected, mild symptoms similar to a cold or flu occur. After the first phase of infection, the parasite goes into a “dormant” phase in the brain and begins a silent chronic infection that can last for decades or a lifetime. Chronic infection usually causes no symptoms in healthy individuals. However, Toxoplasma can cause a life-threatening brain infection (encephalitis) in people with a weakened immune system (HIV, organ transplant recipients, after chemotherapy) and can be dangerous to the foetus during pregnancy. Eye infections can occur in otherwise healthy people.

Users flocked to Twitter to share their stories, reporting a variety of problems. Some said they had attempted to log into their accounts, only to be greeted by a message telling them that their account had been suspended for violating community standards. Spain had only just begun its democratic journey six years earlier and the country embraced the socialist leader with the same enthusiasm with which it threw itself headlong into modernity.
– It was also a year that will always be remembered because fashion and hairstyles at the time were anything but conventional. A woman’s blouse cost 1,554 pesetas (9.40 euros) and a man’s jacket cost 5,630 pesetas (34 euros). It was Mecano’s debut and also the year of the shoulder pads and backcombed hair. But how much have prices changed since then?

– If we compare the figures of the early 1980s with those of today, it is clear that Spain is not the same as before. Tourism, petrol, basic foodstuffs and leisure have shot up. Inflation has also increased, although it is true that the Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI) then was 28,400 pesetas/month (about 171 euros) and now, in 2022. The square metre of housing was almost 61,000 pesetas (370 euros) compared to the 1,685 euros it costs now.
– You could buy a newspaper at the newsagents for 35 pesetas a day (21 cents, when now the daily ABC is worth 1.90 euros during the week) and fill up your car for 80 pesetas a litre of super petrol, that is 0.48 cents (as of yesterday, in Spain, it is worth 1.91 euros a litre). A car which, by the way, you could buy for a total of 1,239,000 pesetas (almost 7,500 euros) in the case of the Ford Escort, named car of the year in 1982. Today, its equivalent would be an Opel Corsa from 19,000 euros.
– Smoking was also considered a much cheaper vice than it is today. 30 pesetas for a pack of Ducados (0.18 euros) and 75 pesetas for a pack of Fortuna (0.45 euros). Today, the prices in tobacconists’ shops are 4.75 and 4.85 euros a pack of the respective brands. If we go into the field of alcoholic beverages, the 70cl red bottle of the famous Scotch whisky Johnnie Walker used to cost 870 pesetas (just over 5 euros) in Pryca supermarkets (now Carrefour); today, it is over 13 euros. And if we are talking about cubatas – or ‘cubalibres’, as they were called at the time, whether rum or gin – you could have one for 100 pesetas (0.60 euros) and a beer in a bar for half that, 50 pesetas (0.30 cents).
– By the way, you could go to the cinema for 200 ‘pelas’ (1.20 euros), when now the standard price is 9.90 euros. In other words, the price has quintupled. Eating a set menu at the corner bar in your neighbourhood for only 256 pesetas (1.54 euros) and now you can’t find any restaurant for less than 10 pesetas.
– A single EMT ticket used to cost 30 pesetas (0.18 euros) and in 2022, it will vary between 1.50 and 2 euros depending on the number of stations you travel. The price of a 10-trip ticket was already 160 pesetas (0.96) in December 1982, while now the figure is more than 12 euros.
– As far as the shopping list is concerned, the difference in prices is truly abysmal. A kilo of beef used to cost 424 pesetas (2.55 euros); (2.55 euros; now about 13 in some supermarkets), a loaf of bread in the grocery store cost 17 pesetas (the equivalent of 10 cents now), two litres of La Masía brand olive oil cost 350 pesetas (2 euros), a box of María biscuits cost 112 pesetas (65 cents) and Mimosin fabric softener cost 99 pesetas (0.60 cents) for 2 litres on the supermarket shelves. American Music Icon Jerry Lee Lewis Is Dead at 87:
– Jerry Lee Lewis (“The Killer”), piano-bashing rock ‘n’ roll founding father, swaggering country shouter and the last surviving member of the inaugural (1986) class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has died. His death was announced on Friday (Oct. 28).
– Lewis is known for recording such rock standards as “Whole Lot of Shakin’ Going On,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Breathless” and “High School Confidential.” Both “Whole Lot of Shakin’ Going On” and “Great Balls of Fire” have been named to the Grammy Hall of Fame. Sometime collaborator Kris Kristofferson told USA Today that Jerry Lee Lewis is “one of the best American voices ever.” A 2022 inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Lewis is one of just 16 people to have been inducted into both the Country and Rock and Roll Halls.
