COVID & MONKEYPOX

Covid Spain- Health reports 17,875 new cases of coronavirus, incidence drops to 185: {Translation} 4Nov22
– The Ministry of Health has registered 17,875 new cases of coronavirus this Friday, with data provided by the autonomous communities, of which 11,420 have occurred in people over 60 years of age, bringing the total number of infections in Spain since the start of the pandemic to 13,529,643.
– The current average incidence of infection in Spain in the last 14 days in people over 60 years of age has fallen slightly, standing at 185.55 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to the 220.14 reported last Friday.
– In terms of deaths from Covid-19, there have been 161 more deaths, of which 59 have been reported in the last week. This brings the overall death toll from coronavirus in Spain to 115,239 people.
– There are currently 3,363 patients admitted for Covid-19 across Spain (up from 3,337 last week) and 195 in an ICU (188 were reported last Friday). The coronavirus bed occupancy rate stands at 2.7 per cent (the same as last week) and in ICUs at 2.23 per cent (compared to 2.15 per cent last Friday). SPAIN

Almost half of spaniards believe that access to health care has worsened: {Translation}
– According to the Cosmo-Spain study, published by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII), 59% of Spaniards say that the coronavirus worries them “little or nothing” and only 13% believe that the disease would be serious in case of contagion, but what 47% do observe is that access to health care has worsened, according to the study Cosmo-Spain, published by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII).
– This latest study closes 12 rounds of surveys, the first in July 2020, with which the ISCIII wanted to monitor the behaviour and attitudes of the Spanish population during the two years of the pandemic.
– The survey, conducted in September on a sample of 1,051 people, incorporates for the first time a question on persistent Covid and reveals that 16% of respondents say they “have or have had” symptoms after overcoming the acute phase of SARS-Cov-2 infection.
– The most reported symptoms are fatigue, 52%; joint or muscle pain, 44%; headache, 33%; cough, 36%; and insomnia, 33% of respondents.
– For the first time, the survey asked about the effects of the pandemic on personal life compared to the pre-Covid period. Forty-seven per cent admitted a worsening in health care services, 33% in social life, 32% in mental health and 28% said their physical health had deteriorated.
– The study finds that concern about the disease has been falling since January 2021 and is down ten points from the May survey, when 49% said they were “little or not at all” worried about the virus.
– In addition, the feeling that the virus is spreading fast or very fast has fallen to the lowest levels, something shared by only 22% of respondents, while the feeling that the worst of the pandemic is over has increased, a view shared by 86% of the population.
– The survey, sponsored by the World Health Organisation (WHO), found that feelings of fear and depression are in the lowest frequencies, with only 26% of respondents saying they feel depressed or afraid.
– Health literacy, understood as respondents’ perceived ease of understanding and applying Covid-related information, has remained high throughout the pandemic.
– What has declined is adherence to preventive measures, which the study justifies by social relaxation and fewer restrictions on the recommendations of health authorities.
– The search for information has also been falling and the respondents’ assessment of the suitability of the measures that have been adopted over the last two years has remained stable, with percentages of acceptance as high as 35%.
– When asked whether they would take a new dose of the anticovid vaccine, the percentages remain high at over 70%. And among those who are not about to receive the serum, 44% believe that the vaccine may put their health at risk and 26% that they are already sufficiently immunised. A warning of the possible local extinction of one of the butterflies most common of the Iberian Peninsula: {Translation, summary}
– A new research warning of the possible local extinction of one of the butterflies most abundant and common in Europe, and also of the Iberian Peninsula, Coenonympha pamphilus, (in Spanish, pánfila or medlar).
– The study, which has involved the Group of Biodiversity, Ecology, and Evolution of the University Complutense of Madrid (UCM), reveals that it does not possess any record of the butterfly, at least, in the last 10 years in the provinces of Almería, Murcia, Alicante and other areas of the mediterranean coast. This seems to indicate that there has been or is going on a local extinction of this species in the area.
– As reported by the UCM, after making models of potential distribution and to relate it to different environmental variables, it has been found that there is a negative relationship between aridity and the suitability of the territory of the butterfly. “The increase in the aridity of the area, spurred by climate change, is the trigger of the local extinction of this species,” he says. Thousands rally in Spain’s capital for pay hikes as living costs soar:
– Protestors waved red union flags and banged drums as they made their way to the Spanish capital’s landmark Plaza Mayor square behind a large banner that read: “Salary or Conflict”. Police estimate some 25,000 people took part in the demonstration, which was called by Spain’s two main unions, the CCOO and UGT.
“Either there is a rise in salaries or work conflicts will increase exponentially in our country over the next year,” CCOO secretary general Unai Sordo told reporters at the protest. Olive sector in Andalucía predicts a disastrous year ahead with one of worst harvests in living memory: The excellent data from the last olive season contrasts with the pessimistic olive oil production forecasts for the upcoming one. For months, the sector in Andalucía has been waiting for rainfall as, without it, there will be a significant drop in the harvest. And increased energy costs are set to compound matters as olive growers fear they will have one of the worst harvests in living memory, with less olive oil and higher prices due to inflation. Misplaced Priorities? – With 100+ Day Waiting Periods For Medical Services, Andalucia Still Manages To Find €100Million+ for New Electric Vehicle Recharging Points: {Translation, summary}
– The Andalusian government has made more than 100 million euros available to promote sustainable mobility, through various incentive programmes for the purchase of alternative energy vehicles and the installation of charging points managed by the Andalusian Energy Agency, thanks to which it has supported the purchase of 7,800 electric vehicles and the installation of 4,700 charging points in Andalusia.
(Meanwhile, patients in Andalucia on health care waiting lists are dying for lack of treatment. That €100Million+ could be better used to improve local healthcare facilities and save lives, rather than being used by our leaders to impress EU Greenie commissars. -Ed.)

Andalucia Pins Hopes On Complex Artificial Intelligence Systems Even Experts Do Not Fully Understand: {Translation, summary}
– The Minister of the Presidency, Interior, Social Dialogue and Administrative Simplification, Antonio Sanz, announced this Friday that Andalusia “is going to be a pioneer in having an Andalusian Artificial Intelligence Strategy approved in the first quarter of the year” that will extend its actions to all areas, from health to mobility, the agricultural sector and the very functioning of the Administration.
– In a statement to the media in Granada before participating in an informative breakfast of ‘Ideal’, Sanz wanted to transfer the support of the Andalusian Government chaired by Juanma Moreno to the candidacy of this city to host the headquarters of the State Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence and “we not only join”, he said, with the agreement of the Governing Council this week, but has also announced the approval in the first quarter of the year of this Andalusian Artificial Intelligence Strategy that will mean “a commitment to the development of multiple actions in all areas”.
– “In short, we’re going to change the world through Artificial Intelligence and also in the Administration itself,” noted the minister, who said that implementing processes of robotization and automation “are transforming the reality of what is the public service to the citizens.” Source, Spanish: https://andaluciainformacion.es/andalucia/1109527/la-junta-aprobara-en-el-primer-trimestre-la-estrategia-de-inteligencia-artificial/

MALAGA

November is going to be spring-like, say experts: The high temperatures will continue in Malaga province throughout November, which is expected to be, once again, milder than normal. The worst news is that, for the moment, there is no rain, and the models show that it will be a drier month than usual. The tail end of a front, that is not very active, is passing through today (Friday), and may leave some very weak precipitation in Ronda and Antequera, but only in isolation and nothing on the coast. Hopes raised that Costa del Sol jazz club can avoid closure:
– After being hit by the Covid-19 pandemic the Clarence in Torremolinos set up a crowdfunding challenge to raise 50,000 euros needed to cover its costs but after contributions of only 13,400 it was facing closure. But, now, owner Javier Salinas has received an unexpected response from private investors and companies who want to prevent the only jazz venue in the province from disappearing.
– The modern jazz club, with a New York feel, and capacity for 500 people is a benchmark for jazz at the national level with events like the one on 25 November featuring the Grammy-winning pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, featuring the only Spanish date of his new album ‘Turning Point/Trio D’été’. Dutch authorities bar entry to UK “conspiracy theorist”, David Icke: The Dutch government on Friday banned British conspiracy theorist David Icke from entering the Netherlands for two years. (Icke, a former popular UK football commentator, who sometimes does promote rather bizarre theories, is also the guy who exposed Jimmy Saville and his pedo network more than 20 years ago, but was dismissed at the time as a “conspiracy theorist”.  We now know Icke was correct. Try telling Saville’s estimated 500 victims that Icke is a conspiracy theorist. What other unlikely sounding things might Icke be right about? Ref: https://www.theguardian.com/media/2014/jun/26/jimmy-savile-sexual-abuse-timeline -Ed.). The ban also effectively bars Icke from entering any of the 25 European countries in the Schengen free movement area.
– Officials in the Netherlands said he would “disturb public order.”

French MP suspended after ‘go back to Africa’ outburst: France’s National Assembly on Friday issued a 15-day suspension to a far-right MP who shouted “go back to Africa” while a Black colleague spoke about stranded migrants. The parliament also punished Gregoire de Fournas of Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN) party with a cut of half his compensation for two months.
– “We must not fragilize our democracy,” said National Assembly Speaker Yael Braun-Pivet. She ordered the de Fournas to leave the parliament’s premises.
– The far-right MP later denied he was addressing leftist Carlos Martens Bilongo of the France Unbowed party, saying Thursday’s outburst was directed at migrants stranded on a rescue ship. In French, the words “he,” “they” and “it” are pronounced identically.

Parisian undertaker aims to introduce bicycle hearse in France:
– Undertaker Isabelle Plumereau cycled around Paris on a recent autumn day with a bicycle hearse that she hopes will soon bring a new “green” way of conducting funerals to the French capital.
– Quieter, environmentally conscious burials are a small but growing trend, and Plumereau says transporting the coffin with a specially designed cargo bike can confer a more down to earth pace to a funeral.
– While bicycle hearses already exist in a few other countries, including Switzerland and Denmark, hers would be a first in France, according to the 51-year old undertaker. “Everyone walks at the same pace (behind a bicycle hearse)and we hear each other, we hear the sounds of nature around us, the wind in the trees, the birds. In my view this is the best way to console yourself.” Photos: Yiming Woo. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/business/cop/parisian-undertaker-aims-introduce-bicycle-hearse-france-2022-11-03/

El Puente Christian Fellowship – Sunday Service
El Puente Christian Fellowship is a loving, multi-national, Bible believing community of Christ, who meet each Sunday at 11 am to worship The Lord. We enjoy a time of worship with contemporary songs and traditional hymns, and a message brought to us by one of the Elders or a visiting speaker.
The church meeting hall is situated underneath Maroma Inmobiliaria Puente Don Manuel, Cruce de Periana – 29713.
Full directions and further information can be found on our Facebook page, or please contact us by email on elpuentechristianfellowship@gmail.com. For those who cannot join us in person, we aim to stream Sunday services via the Facebook page (subject to a good internet connection!).

St George’s Church Málaga: We are part of the Church of England in Spain covering the area from Torremolinos in the west to the outskirts of Nerja in the east and to the northern edge of Malaga province.
We have three worship centres, in Velez-Málaga, Málaga city and Salinas. Everyone is welcome to our Sunday services in English, and you can also contact us to enquire about baptisms, marriage blessings, funerals, and house blessings.
Father Louis, our Chaplain, is available for counsel and support, regardless of anyone’s beliefs or background. We aspire to be a welcoming and inclusive community, open to all people seeking faith and friendship.
If you can’t get to church, we live-stream our Sunday services on Facebook, and also gather on Zoom for an informal service on Wednesday mornings.
Sign up for our newsletter by emailing Father Louis at malagachaplain@gmail.com to receive login details, and news of other future events. We look forward to welcoming you and being of service.
