COVID & MONKEYPOX

Slight increase in number of patients with coronavirus in Andalucia & Malaga hospitals:

In Andalucía there has also been a slight increase in hospitalisations for Covid, going from 219 patients to 239. There are 13 people in ICUs, three more than on 25 October.
– In contrast, the incidence rate of the virus in people over 60 years of age has dropped by 14.7 points. The Andalusian rate is 88.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/andalucia/covid-patients-hospital-20221102181848-nt.html

The price of electricity drops again this Thursday- these are the cheapest hours: {Translation, summary}
– The average price of electricity for regulated tariff customers linked to the wholesale market will fall this Thursday by 14.5% compared to Wednesday, to 120.24 euros per megawatt hour (MWh).
– The maximum price will be between 18:00 and 19:00 hours, at 173.52 euros/MWh, while the minimum for the day, 90.91 euros/MWh, will be between 04:00 and 05:00 hours. Source, Spanish: https://sevilla.abc.es/economia/precio-vuelve-bajar-jueves-horas-baratas-20221102185347-nts.html

The date on which pensions will go up by an average of 100 euros per month: {Translation}
– Pensions will rise by 8.5% from 1 January 2023. This is the estimate announced by the government, which will mean around 100 euros more per month on average. It will be the highest increase in history and the most expensive for the State (and tax payers!): it will spend 17,000 million euros just to update benefits in line with the CPI.
– Taking into account the level of the current average pensions offered by the Social Security, retirees will receive an average of 107 euros more per month, that is, about 1,500 euros more in the whole of next year. Their average pension will stand at 1,364 euros.
– The minimum contributory pension in Spain will rise from 1,005 euros a month to 1,090 euros. On the other hand, the maximum pension will rise from 2,820 euros to 3,060 euros next year.
– Non-contributory pensions will also go up from 421.40 euros to 456.90 euros per month.
– A pensioner who receives an average retirement pension, currently at 1,256.9 euros, will receive a monthly increase of 106.8 euros and will receive 1,495.7 euros per year. This average income is therefore 1,363.7 euros per month.
– In the case of a widow’s pension, which averages 780.1 euros, the monthly increase will be 66.3 euros, or 928.3 euros per year. After this revaluation, this pension will be 846.4 euros per month.
– As for orphan’s pensions, the increase will be 41.1 euros per month and 575.5 euros per year. The benefit will increase from 483.7 euros to 524.8 euros.
– Those who receive a family pension from the Social Security – granted to family members who lived with and were financially dependent on the deceased and who meet the requirements to protect the financial need arising from the death – will receive an additional 54 euros per month, a total of 761 euros for the whole year. The amount of the pension will be 694 euros per month.
– In the case of new retirees, they will receive on average 20% more than pensions leaving the system. On average, they already receive more than 1,500 euros per month. Now, with the increase, these pensioners will receive 129 euros more per month, and a total of 1,806 euros for the year. On average, their pension will be 1,647 euros.
– In any case, that 8.5% is the estimated increase and may change with the inflation figures for November and December. In other words, the definitive revaluation will be known when the November CPI is published. And it will be the same percentage for all, without exception, as on this occasion the minimum and contributory pensions will not have a higher increase, as has been the norm in recent years.
*Without the ‘paguilla’ for 2023*
– This year, 2022, was the last year in which pensioners received financial assistance to compensate for the loss of purchasing power due to the difference between the average annual increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the increase forecast by the Government. It was known as the ‘paguilla’ and was received in January. This payment ranged from 180 to 233 euros, depending on the type of pension. However, this aid will disappear in 2023 as a result of the Pension Reforms Act of the Minister José Luis Escrivá.
– This Pension Reforms Act provides for a new form of revaluation that takes into account the fluctuation of the year-on-year CPI over a 12-month average. In other words, it takes into account the period from December of the previous year to November of the current year. Thus, with this new measure, pensioners will maintain their fourteen annual payments and the ‘paguilla’ will no longer be necessary. Housing Crisis- Left-wing Populist Podemos Party Response To Skyrocketing Rents- “We must start confiscating properties from those who speculate with housing”: {Translation, summary}
– “It is high time that this country started to expropriating from those who take advantage of the enormous amount of empty flats to speculate with housing”. Podemos deputy Pablo Jiménez has argued in the Balearic Parliament that housing policies should be focused on increasing the public housing stock through the expropriation of large landlords. He also expressed the need to approve “as soon as possible” the Housing Law, which is still stuck in Congress.
– “With regard to tax deductions to motivate rent cuts, this is something that is already being considered in the future State Housing Law. In fact, there may be deductions of up to 90% for owners if they lower the rental price compared to the previous contract”.
– Finally, he stated that his party does not agree with the decision to give public money for the purchase of housing, “directly or indirectly”, and that all available budget “should be dedicated to improving the public housing stock”.
(Note: In Barcelona they have been forcing the sale of empty properties, plus imposing possible fines, since 2020. Using a legal tool approved by the Catalonia region in December 2019, Barcelona has expanded power to actually buy the apartments outright by compulsory purchase, at 50% of market rate. The new national Housing Laws will be voted on soon. As has become typical with the current Socialists in power, we probably won’t get to see what measures it contains until it has passed. New app looks set to solve Spain’s huge citizenship backlog:
Spain’s Justice Ministry is reportedly unclogging the bottleneck of more than 300,000 citizenship applications that has caused foreigners to wait two or three years longer than they should for an answer, all thanks to a digital application. The timing of this new automated system is certainly positive, as the recent approval of Spain’s new ‘grandchildren’ citizenship is expected to see as many as 700,000 foreigners who don’t even live in Spain apply for Spanish passports. MALAGA

Popular Malaga restaurant closes after 55 years, suffocated by spiralling costs: Venta El Torcal, the emblematic restaurant in Puerto de la Torre, Malaga has just closed down after 55 years because the owners can no longer afford to run it even though they own the building. José Miguel Aguilar, whose father opened the business in 1967, made the reluctant decision to throw in the towel. “I’m sad, of course I am. My father, my parents, my whole family have dedicated our lives to this business,” he said. “But with the current situation it’s impossible and a lot of other businesses are going to end up closing in this area”. – This was announced by the regional delegate for Agriculture, Rocío Palacios, after verifying that the company awarded the contract, Aguas y Servicios, is already working on the land through which the pipes will be diverted, at a budgeted cost of 70,000 euros. ENERGY CRISIS

Proof Iberdrola tried to hide its cheaper rates from customers- they  intentionally programmed the website of its regulated gas tariff so that it was impossible to find it on Google!: {Translation, summary}
– Iberdrola programmed the website of Curenergía, its regulated electricity and gas tariff provider, so that it would be impossible to find it in Google searches. It did this by adding the ‘noindex’ tag to the website’s source code, which tells all search engines that the owner does not want it to be displayed in any of their results, not even when the term ‘Curenergía’ is entered directly.
– The energy company has re-enabled the page to appear in search engines after the action was uncovered by Samuel Parra, a lawyer specialising in consumer rights and data protection. He discovered it when he tried to sign up for the regulated gas tariff with Curenergía and found that it was impossible to access the page directly from Google.
– The Ministry for Ecological Transition published an official statement on Twitter after Samuel Parra’s revelation went viral, in which he stressed that marketers “have the obligation to offer simple and affordable access to their customers” to the regulated tariff. “Without obstacles and with total transparency”, stresses Consumo, which reveals that it is in contact with the CNMC to transfer “the necessary information” for its fraud investigation.

Consumer Affairs urges people to take precautions to avoid irregular practices by electricity suppliers: {Translation}
– Consumo Responde stresses the importance for consumers and users to take the utmost precautions when contracting electricity supply in the free electricity market, especially when receiving commercial calls from companies.
– This advice is more necessary than ever after learning of various irregular practices by energy supply companies, as stated in one of the latest resolutions of the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC), a body that has found that a number of marketers have carried out “acts of deception and confusion” to attract customers from other electricity and gas marketers, with “thousands of users affected”, many of them elderly people, which is why they have been imposed a significant penalty.
– In this resolution, different strategies are found to have been carried out, such as: the attempt to attract customers by pretending to be their usual company; the communication to consumers of a supposed update or renewal of the tariff, pretending to be their usual company; the offer of supposed discounts on the tariff, assuring that they would remain linked to their usual company; the communication of a supposed mandatory change of supplier due to a supposed disappearance or change of name of their usual company; or the communication of a supposed change of billing or distribution company.
– Consumo Responde exposes the proliferation of commercial campaigns, sometimes aggressive and invasive, by free market suppliers or other companies that act through them, i.e. subcontractors. These campaigns often offer attractive discounts or promotions which, in theory, would lead to significant savings on the bill, for which customers are asked to provide information on the bill.
– The Consumer Affairs Department stresses that caution should be exercised because these campaigns sometimes seek to obtain personal data, or to obtain the signature of a document that could imply: a change of supplier and a switch to the free market; a switch to a free contract within the company itself, or inclusion in the new contract of complementary services with a covert price increase. Likewise, this type of contract usually implies a long term commitment.
– Consumo Responde stresses that all contracts and their conditions should be read carefully, especially if they include ancillary services, what are the conditions of price revision of contracts, or if there are any commitments of permanence that involve penalties for cancellation. In the case of commercial telephone calls – the door-to-door sale of gas and electricity is prohibited – caution should be exercised and the user should not be pressured or rushed into signing a contract or signing anything without careful consideration. And, above all, if you are not interested in any supposed offer made by one of these companies, clearly say “no”, and do not let yourself be carried away by the supposed ‘good words’ of the person who is talking to you.
– It is essential to ask for a copy of the contract with all the conditions offered for a detailed study before signing anything. It is also vital not to provide anyone who visits your home or calls you on the phone with bank details, details of previous bills, or personal details (for example, your ID card), as they could be used for a covert contract.
***Consumer Affairs Responds***
– If you have any doubts or queries about consumer affairs, citizens can contact Consumo Responde, a free information and advice service for consumers and users, promoted by the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs of the Andalusian Regional Government. This is a multi-channel service, which can be accessed  through the telephone number 900 21 50 80, the website http://www.consumoresponde.es, the e-mail consumoresponde@juntadeandalucia.es; and the Twitter (@consumoresponde), Facebook (www.facebook.com/consumoresponde) and Instagram (@consumoresponde) profiles.
Advice can also be obtained from the Provincial Consumer Services of the territorial delegations of Health and Consumer Affairs in all provincial capitals, as well as from the Municipal Consumer Information Offices (OMIC), and from consumer and user organisations. TRAVEL NEWS

Vueling cancels 54 flights in Spain on first strike day:
– The Spanish budget airline Vueling cancelled 54 flights on November 1st as its cabin crew began industrial action that will last into the New Year. Despite this, 466 flights scheduled operated “without incident” and with a punctuality of 86.68 percent, according to the company.
– Barcelona’s El Prat Airport, where Vueling has its main base, was the most affected by the stoppages. But the low-cost airline still reportedly managed to operate 90 percent of its Vueling flights to and from the Catalan capital on Monday.
– Stoppages will take place every Friday, Sunday and Monday until January 31st, 2023, as well as November 1st, the first day of strikes, but also December 6th, 8th, 24th and 31st and January 5th – dates chosen because they are long weekends or key travel days for the Christmas period. The Federal Open Market Committee voted unanimously to increase the federal funds rate to a new target range of 3.75 per cent to 4 per cent following its latest two-day meeting.
