SPAIN

Bars and restaurants across Spain to protest at high energy bills on Tuesday:
– Bar and restaurant owners in Malaga province and other places in Spain are will be stopping work and turning their lights off for five minutes on Tuesday at 7pm, as a symbolic protest at the difficulties they face due to high energy prices and to demand solutions from the government. Some will also gather in the Plaza del Carbón in Malaga city to read a manifesto.
– The Mahos association in Malaga and the Hospitality Business Confederation of Spain say energy costs are now a major problem and are on average between 3,000 and 6,000 euros a month for these businesses. Although bills are supposed to have gone up by 30% to 40% in general, some establishments say theirs have tripled.

New hauliers’ strike called for next week in Spain threatens chaos similar to last March:
– The haulage sector in Spain is going on strike again. The Platform for the Defence of Transport has called an indefinite protest from midnight on Sunday, similar to the one which caused chaos in March when the lack of transport affected supermarket supplies and meant that some major dairy and beer producers were unable to operate.
– The leader of the association, Manuel Hernández, announced the strike this Monday morning, saying it was inevitable because costs have increased so much. He said between 200 and 250 companies in the haulage sector are closing every month for financial reasons.
Scarcity will compound the already painful inflation, driving prices ever higher, should this strike not be called off before next week.

Spain Introduces New Visa for Foreign Start-Ups & Digital Nomads, Reduces Taxes for Them: The Spanish Parliament has approved the new law for start-ups and digital nomads, which regulates who is eligible for this visa and anticipates reducing the Corporation Tax for these categories from 25 to 15 per cent in the first four years of their stay in Spain. According to local media, the new law enabled anyone from the EU or third countries that haven’t been a resident in Spain in the last four years to benefit from a special visa which can be renewed for up to five years.
– By the end of the month, it is expected for the government to determine the exact requirements and conditions for digital nomads, including the minimum amount they have to earn, although the amount is expected to be approximately €2,000 per month.

– “The Civil Guard has seized the largest cache of packaged marijuana found so far,” the Spanish Civil Guard said in a statement,

MALAGA

Cases of hand-foot-and-mouth disease reported in schools and nurseries in Malaga province:
– Schools and nurseries in Malaga province are reporting a wave of new cases of hand-foot-and-mouth disease, a mild, contagious viral infection which is common in young children. The condition is often found in the spring and autumn, but doctors say at present it appears to be rampant.
– Doctors say there is no need to panic. This is an illness which tends to disappear within a week to ten days. There is no specific treatment, so the children are normally given the usual medication to reduce discomfort.
– However, parents should be aware that sometimes, weeks or even months after having hand-foot-and-mouth disease the children may lose their fingernails or toenails, but there is no need for alarm. It is not painful and no treatment is required. The nails will grow back normally afterwards. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/handfootandmouth-disease-20221107175928-nt.html

Malaga trains hit by today’s rail union strike which is to be repeated on Friday: (Third strike article today- trains, transport & restaurants. Yesterday it was airlines. Yikes!)
– Members of the CGT union at Spain’s Renfe train operating company are on strike today, Monday 7 November, and only minimum services are running. Trains on local and medium-distance lines may be affected as well as the high-speed AVE and Avant services. The protest, which began at midnight and is due to continue until 11pm, will be repeated on Friday.
– The minimum services established by the Ministry of Transport mean that 75% of trains on local lines must run during peak hours and 50% for the rest of the day, while on medium-distance and Avant trains 65% of normal services must go ahead as usual. For high-speed and long-distance services the minimum service is 72%, and it has been set at 25% for freight trains.
– The CGT has called the strike to demand the recovery of lost purchasing power, an end to professional discrimination, more staff and to defend the railway system “in a situation of global climate change,” said Miguel Montenegro, the general secretary of the union in Andalucía. Ukraine seizes ownership of strategic companies under wartime laws:
– Ukraine said today that it had invoked wartime laws to take control of stakes in a top engine-maker and four other strategic companies from some of the country’s richest men.
– It was the first time the government had used martial law for such a move since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, and President Volodymyr Zelensky said the move was needed to help meet the defence sector’s urgent needs during the war.
– It was also the government’s most dramatic intervention of the war into big business, touching companies linked to tycoons whose political power Mr Zelensky’s team has long sought to curb. Full article: https://www.rte.ie/news/ukraine/2022/1107/1333745-wartime-laws/

Orange Espana Hacked- Announces Data Breach of Customer Info: {Translation}
– An Orange supplier has suffered a cyber-attack that has exposed “some of the sensitive information to which it had access to carry out the customer management activity for which it was contracted”, the operator said in a statement sent to its users on Monday. The leaked data includes name and surname, address, telephone number, email address, ID number, date of birth, nationality and the IBAN code of the current account.
– Orange sources have assured elDiario.es that the breach has affected “a limited number of customers”, although for the moment they have not been able to confirm the exact number. The company has almost 13 million customers in its mobile business.
– Security breaches of this type carry a high risk of subsequent cyber-attack against users whose information has been leaked. It makes it easier for criminals to impersonate Orange or any other company to extract more sensitive data, such as bank passwords. By having very specific data on their victims, cybercriminals can gain their trust and induce them to fall for a scam.
– “If you have received a communiqué from the affected company, we advise you to be especially cautious over the next few months with emails, messages or calls from which you cannot confirm their origin or sender, especially messages requesting banking information or credentials. These messages could be fraudulent,” warned the National Cybersecurity Institute (Incibe).
– Orange has also asked its customers to contact their bank if they detect any suspicious activity. “We are sorry for what happened and we offer you the free phone number 900901564 from 9am to 9pm from Monday to Sunday, to answer any questions you may have about this incident,” it has informed its affected customers. Instagram will verify the age by means of an ID card or Video Selfie in Spain: {Translation, summary}
– Meta has reported that the new age verification tools on Instagram, using an ID document or Video Selfie, come into effect this Monday for users in Spain, where the minimum age to use the platform is 14.
– Thus, if someone creating a profile wants to submit their age as 18 or over, verification will automatically be required to back it up. This is because, as Instagram’s director of public policy, Tara Hopkins, has said, it is important to know the age of the profiles using the platform to ensure that the experience is “age-appropriate” and that is “a challenge” for the industry.
– In the case of choosing verification by means of an identity document, once the age has been verified, the image of the document will be stored “securely” for 30 days.
– In the case of a Video Selfie verification, an age verification technology developed by the company specialised in this field ‘Yoti’ will be used. This technology will estimate the age of the account owner, however, it does not have facial recognition or identification of the person. This Hidden Facebook Tool Lets You Remove Your Email or Phone Number Shared by Others, Even If You Are Not A Fakebook User:
– The info about this new tool is buried inside a Help Center page about “Friending”.
– “Someone may have uploaded their address book to Facebook, Messenger or Instagram with your contact information in it,” Facebook notes in the page. “You can ask us to confirm whether we have your phone number or email address.”
– If the information is present in Facebook or Instagram, it can be requested for deletion from its address book database, although Meta says it needs a copy of the phone number or email address to be added to a block list maintained by the company so as to prevent it from being re-uploaded.
– Here’s the catch. Facebook may still end up having the contact information of those who are looking to get them removed from the platform in the first place, albeit in a different form, now from your removal request.
– While the utility is primarily aimed at non-users, it allows anyone to prevent this information from being shared from their friends’ contact lists.
– The tool is found here: https://www.facebook.com/contacts/removal

Spanish village in a nature park for sale for 260,000 euros: {Translation, summary}
– Buying a house would be within some people’s lifetime plans, but buying a village? It sounds crazy, but it is totally possible. This is the case of Salto de Castro (Zamora), nestled within the Arribes del Duero Natural Park, which is sold in its entirety on Idealista for a surprising price of just 260,000 euros.
– A good opportunity for a tourist business? Salto de Castro was built in 1952 by Iberdrola, for the families working on a hydroelectric project in the area. In the early 2000s, a family bought the village, now uninhabited, with a tourism objective in mind that was cut short by the 2008 crisis. Now, this family has put the village back on the market, which is an interesting opportunity for an entrepreneur.
– It is located a few meters from a reservoir where a boat tour activity could be launched. In addition, Salto de Castro is immersed in the Arribes del Duero Natural Park, a perfect place for nature lovers, with a spectacular waterfall, various trails and a large variety of fauna including rare birds.
