Public Holiday: Day of Andalucía, Tuesday, February 28, 2023
– Andalucía, the southernmost region of mainland Spain, has its own special holiday known simply as the Andalusia Regional Holiday. The holiday is observed each year on 28 February.
– The reason for the 28 February date is that it commemorates the passing of a 1980 referendum that led to Andalucía gaining “autonomous region” status within Spain. This gives a degree of increased local autonomy but not independence. It also is a symbolic recognition of the people, culture, and unique history of Andalucía.

El Morche Carnaval- Saturday, February 25
– The parade will begin at five in the afternoon, which will be enlivened by the brass band “The Crumbs”. – The DGT has introduced changes that see anyone who wishes to renew their driver´s licence at age 65 is required to undertake an ability test. Blast at bank in Malaga city centre:
– A gang of thieves is behind an explosion at the Avenida de Andalucía branch of ING bank in Malaga city centre which happened at around 12.30am this Friday, 17 February. The ATM machine, which had been loaded with cash, was the main target. Two loud bangs were heard in the area and emergency services received several calls alerting them to the noises.
– The bank suffered extensive damage as a result of the blast. Explosives or acetylene gas are commonly used in this type of crime, which causes detonation with an electrical spark from a distance, allowing them to gain access to the cash in the ATM machine.
– There was a similar incident last December in El Palo, where a group of thieves used explosives to blow up a Cajamar branch on Avenida Juan Sebastián Elcano, just a few metres from the municipal market.

Daylight Savings Time in Spain, clocks move ahead on March 26th: The Spanish government has announced all the dates that the clocks will change up until 2026, as published in its official state bulletin (BOE).

The price of Health in Andalusia, 750 euros a day in the ICU: {Translation}
– The order of the Regional Ministry of Health, which updates and develops the system of agreements and contracts with private companies to provide health care, imposes a maximum price on the aspiring firms: 750 for a stay in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU); a maximum of 3,000 euros for a complete radiotherapy treatment; or a maximum of 238 euros for a lymphoscintigraphy.

Mass death of sea lions from bird flu suggests virus may be spreading between mammals in the wild- are humans next?:
– Hundreds of dead or dying sea lions have washed up on the beaches of Peru since January. Before dying, the animals – majestic carnivores that can weigh up to 350 kilos – had been suffering from agonizing convulsions and struggling to swim. Nothing like this had ever been observed in the region. A scientific team of Peruvian and Argentine researchers has now confirmed that the mass mortality of the sea lions is due to the A(H5N1) bird flu virus, which has jumped from seabirds to these wild mammals. Researchers are not ruling out a terrifying hypothesis: that the virus may have learned to spread from mammal to mammal, as it apparently did on a Spanish mink farm. It would be the first time that this has occurred in nature.
– A total of 634 sea lions have been found dead in Peru. The leading theory is that the mammals were infected one by one, independently, by living with sick birds or eating their corpses, according to Argentine biologist Sergio Lambertucci, one of the leaders of the investigation. Velez-Malaga will celebrate a new edition of the Pedal Day on Sunday, 12 March: The race will once again be held jointly, starting in both towns and ending at the El Ingenio Shopping Centre.
Registration will be open from 13 February until 10 March, will be free and can be formalized in the Department itself. As a novelty, this year there will be two departures from Vélez-Málaga and Torre del Mar: “It has been divided for safety. First the adults will leave from the Paseo de Andalucia, and then the younger ones will join in at the Plaza de Las Carmelitas. In Torre del Mar, the start will be from the Paseo Marítimo and then the children will join in at the Paseo Larios”.

The OFMA (Málaga Flute Orchestra) was formed in mid-2014, under the name Martín Tenllado Flute Orchestra (OFMT), with the intention of giving flutists the opportunity to participate in an unusual type of instrumental group. This grouping is made up of different instruments from the flute family such as the transverse flute, the piccolo, the alto flute or the bass flute. Its purpose is the dissemination of musical culture and especially flutistic, as well as the enjoyment of both musicians and listeners.
In the year 2020, it was decided to form this group as an Association before the Junta de Andalucía under the name of Orquesta de Flautas de Málaga. For this concert, the Orchestra will review music from Mozart’s Classicism to the most current works composed for the band. Highlight the work composed by Paco Lara for OFMA, called “Manners”, which will be premiered at this concert.

– On Frida Aemet will raise the warning for coastal phenomena to amber. Easterly winds of 60 to 70 km/h (force 8) and waves of 4 to 5 metres high are expected along the entire coastline of Malaga city, the Costa del Sol and the Axarquía. On land, maximum gusts of 80 km/h are expected.
– The latest weather warnings follow those earlier in the week when heavy downpours hit many parts of the province. British resident finds two large bales of hashish on popular Nerja beach: A British resident in Nerja found two bales of hashish on the shore of Nerja’s Burriana beach at around midday on Wednesday, which the recent storm had dragged onto the sand. Tom S. alerted the Guardia Civil who arrived on the scene within 20 minutes and intercepted the drugs. One of the large packages was half-open, SUR has been able to confirm. Tom told SUR in English, “I pulled them out of the surf so I know they didn’t weigh anything like the reported 25kgs each.” The main hypothesis is that the drugs had been thrown from a boat in a shipment that was aborted by the drug traffickers when they were caught by the authorities.

Massive, 1.2 million-year-old tool workshop in Ethiopia made by ‘clever’ group of unknown human relatives:

– Australia has decided to examine and remove Chinese-made surveillance technology used in government buildings. Carnival of Nerja 2023: February 16 thru 19
The programming begins on Thursday, February 16 at 7:00 p.m. at the Villa de Nerja Cultural Center, with the proclamation and the Los Quintana comparsa. On Friday 17 at 5:00 p.m. the children’s costume contest, Ninfa and Momo of the Carnival will take place on the Balcón de Europa with performances and dances. On Saturday 18 , starting at 5:00 p.m., the Great Carnival Parade will be held , leaving from Jaén street to Balcón de Europa , where the party will continue. – The White House flatly rejected Wednesday a new report by veteran investigative journalist Seymour Hersh that the US was behind the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines last year.
