OFMA (Málaga Flute Orchestra) Concert: Fri, 17Feb 19:30
Vicente Aleixandre Cultural Center, Alhaurin de la Torre, €3 entry
The OFMA (Málaga Flute Orchestra) was formed in mid-2014, under the name Martín Tenllado Flute Orchestra (OFMT), with the intention of giving flutists the opportunity to participate in an unusual type of instrumental group. This grouping is made up of different instruments from the flute family such as the transverse flute, the piccolo, the alto flute or the bass flute. Its purpose is the dissemination of musical culture and especially flutistic, as well as the enjoyment of both musicians and listeners.
In the year 2020, it was decided to form this group as an Association before the Junta de Andalucía under the name of Orquesta de Flautas de Málaga. For this concert, the Orchestra will review music from Mozart’s Classicism to the most current works composed for the band. Highlight the work composed by Paco Lara for OFMA, called “Manners”, which will be premiered at this concert.

SPAIN

Spain’s Congress excludes hunting dogs from new animal rights law:
– Spain’s parliament on Thursday passed a new animal rights bill that has stirred controversy as it excludes hunting dogs and other animals used in traditional rural activities, and which critics say panders to the country’s powerful hunting lobby. The law will overhaul the treatment of domesticated and wild animals in captivity, ban the sale of pets in shops, impose prison sentences on animal abusers, and turn zoos into wildlife recovery centres.
– In a last minute u-turn, the junior ruling coalition partner Unidas Podemos, which had advocated for the inclusion of hunting dogs, backed the law in order for it to pass and asked those fighting to protect hunting dogs for forgiveness. Spain’s hunting industry is worth an estimated 5 billion euros ($5.4 billion) a year and has a powerful lobby. Photo: Violeta Santos Moura. MALAGA

Weather warnings activated on Costa del Sol for waves up to five metres high + Reservoir update:
– On Frida Aemet will raise the warning for coastal phenomena to amber. Easterly winds of 60 to 70 km/h (force 8) and waves of 4 to 5 metres high are expected along the entire coastline of Malaga city, the Costa del Sol and the Axarquía. On land, maximum gusts of 80 km/h are expected.
– The latest weather warnings follow those earlier in the week when heavy downpours hit many parts of the province. The rainstorms left an accumulation of 182mm in Alhaurín el Grande, according to data from an (unofficial) rain gauge in the Meteoclimatic network; as well as 152 in Ojén and 126 at the Aljaima dam, in the Guadalhorce valley – according to official data from the Junta de Andalucía’s Hidrosur network.
**Reservoirs**
– However, the rain passed by many reservoirs in the province. The main beneficiary was La Concepción, which supplies the Costa del Sol, which received some 51mm and currently stands at 71% of its capacity.
– La Viñuela in the Axarquía, which is the most in need of water, registered barely 12mm – and the reservoir is at only 11% of its maximum capacity. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/weather-warnings-costa-del-sol-20230209080844-nt.html

NERJA

British resident finds two large bales of hashish on popular Nerja beach: A British resident in Nerja found two bales of hashish on the shore of Nerja’s Burriana beach at around midday on Wednesday, which the recent storm had dragged onto the sand. Tom S. alerted the Guardia Civil who arrived on the scene within 20 minutes and intercepted the drugs. One of the large packages was half-open, SUR has been able to confirm. Tom told SUR in English, “I pulled them out of the surf so I know they didn’t weigh anything like the reported 25kgs each.” The main hypothesis is that the drugs had been thrown from a boat in a shipment that was aborted by the drug traffickers when they were caught by the authorities.

Football News- A future European Super League could have 80 clubs – A22 CEO:
– A future European Super League could include as many as 80 teams, Bernd Reichart, the chief executive of A22 Sports Management, a company formed to sponsor and assist in the creation of a breakaway soccer league, said on Thursday. In a statement outlining the preliminary results of talks that A22 had with what it said was 50 European clubs and stakeholders of football, the company said change was necessary. “The vast majority of them share the assessment that the very foundation of European football is under threat, and it is time for change,” A22 said. “Feedback suggests a European football league that is open, based solely on sporting merit, multidivisional with 60 to 80 clubs and a minimum of 14 guaranteed European matches per club.”
– Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus were among 12 clubs to announce a breakaway Super League in April 2021.
– Spain’s La Liga President Javier Tebas, a staunch opponent of the ESL, said the plan would only favour big clubs. “The Super League is the wolf, who today disguises himself as a granny to try to fool European football, but his nose and his teeth are very big,” Tebas wrote on Twitter on Thursday.

Netflix is widening its password sharing crackdown, with users in Canada, Spain, and New Zealand now facing extra charges:
– Users in Canada, New Zealand, Spain, and Portugal are the latest to face its clampdown on password sharing, after a previous “Paid sharing” plan trial in a number of Latin American nations, Netflix said Wednesday. In its Wednesday announcement, Netflix said that over 100 million households are sharing accounts, which is impacting its “ability to invest in great new TV and films.”
– Paid sharing means that Netflix users will have to set up a primary location, so only people in that household can use the account without paying extra. There is an additional charge to let up to two people who don’t live with you use your account.
– Prices differ across the different countries. In New Zealand, the service will cost NZ$7.99 ($5.09) per month, while it will be CAN$7.99 ($5.96) per month. In Spain, the service will be 5.99 euros ($6.45), and in Portugal it will be 3.99 euros ($4.30). That’s more than Netflix’s cheapest “Basic with ads” tier, which in Spain costs €5.49 per month. A source with knowledge of Netflix’s plans said the prices have been set to reflect what the streaming giant thinks is most appropriate for the countries. Massive, 1.2 million-year-old tool workshop in Ethiopia made by ‘clever’ group of unknown human relatives:
– More than 1.2 million years ago, an unknown group of human relatives may have created sharp hand axes from volcanic glass in a “stone-tool workshop” in what is now Ethiopia, a new study finds. This discovery suggests that ancient human relatives may have regularly manufactured stone artifacts in a methodical way more than a half-million years earlier than the previous record, which dates to about 500,000 years ago in France and England.
– Because it requires skill and knowledge, stone tool use among early hominins, the group that includes humans and the extinct species more closely related to humans than any other animal, can offer a window into the evolution of the human mind.
– In the new study, the researchers investigated a cluster of sites known as Melka Kunture, located along the upper Awash River valley of Ethiopia. The Awash valley has yielded some of the best known examples of early hominin fossils, such as the famous ancient relative of humanity dubbed “Lucy.” Full article: https://www.livescience.com/massive-1-million-year-old-tool-workshop-in-ethiopia-made-by-clever-group-of-unknown-human-relatives

Australia to remove Chinese-made surveillance cameras:
– Australia has decided to examine and remove Chinese-made surveillance technology used in government buildings. Defense Minister Richard Marles on Thursday said the Chinese-made cameras could pose a security risk for the country. (What’s the point? China also makes most of your computer gear and mobile phones, you going to remove that little security risk too? -Ed.)
– Two companies, Hikvision and Dahua, have provided at least 913 cameras, intercoms, electronic entry systems and video recorders in over 250 Australian government buildings. Both companies are partly owned by the Chinese government.
– “We would have no way of knowing if the sensitive information, images and audio collected by these devices are secretly being sent back to China against the interests of Australian citizens,” said shadow Minister for Cyber Security James Paterson, who requested the audit.
– The checks came after Britain in November announced that it would stop installing Chinese-linked surveillance cameras in sensitive buildings. Some US states have also banned vendors and products from several Chinese technology companies. Churches & Worship

New Life Church: Whether you live in Nerja or are visiting our area, you are very welcome to come and join us at our Sunday gathering. Join us for a time of Holy Spirit led worship and experience the presence of our God. Our teaching is Bible based as we honour God and obey His Word. During this time of uncertainty, God’s Word reminds us that the Gospel shines brightest in times of darkness. Our service lasts for about 1 hour and 30 mins. With Tea and Coffee afterwards.
Jesus said, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. John 14:6

El Puente Christian Fellowship – Sunday Service
El Puente Christian Fellowship is a loving, multi-national, Bible believing community of Christ, who meet each Sunday at 11 am to worship The Lord. We enjoy a time of worship with contemporary songs and traditional hymns, and a message brought to us by one of the Elders or a visiting speaker.
The church meeting hall is situated underneath Maroma Inmobiliaria Puente Don Manuel, Cruce de Periana – 29713.
Full directions and further information can be found on our Facebook page, or please contact us by email on elpuentechristianfellowship@gmail.com. For those who cannot join us in person, we aim to stream Sunday services via the Facebook page (subject to a good internet connection!).

St George’s Church Málaga: We are part of the Church of England in Spain covering the area from Torremolinos in the west to the outskirts of Nerja in the east and to the northern edge of Malaga province.
We have three worship centres, in Velez-Málaga, Málaga city and Salinas. Everyone is welcome to our Sunday services in English, and you can also contact us to enquire about baptisms, marriage blessings, funerals, and house blessings.
Father Louis, our Chaplain, is available for counsel and support, regardless of anyone’s beliefs or background. We aspire to be a welcoming and inclusive community, open to all people seeking faith and friendship.
If you can’t get to church, we live-stream our Sunday services on Facebook, and also gather on Zoom for an informal service on Wednesday mornings.
Sign up for our newsletter by emailing Father Louis at malagachaplain@gmail.com to receive login details, and news of other future events. We look forward to welcoming you and being of service.
