ANDALUCIA
Andalucia, seismic land: what are the chances of an earthquake?:
{Translation}
– In the wake of the catastrophe in Turkey and Syria caused by the powerful earthquakes that have struck the area and have already left thousands dead and thousands more missing in the ruins of buildings toppled by earthquakes measuring 7.8 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, and in the dozens of aftershocks that followed, there are many questions that arise. One of the first thoughts that people have is how they would act in such a situation, or whether a catastrophe of this magnitude is likely in Andalucia.
– The answer is clear: it is likely. Another thing is whether it will ever happen again, with the same intensity, at the same epicentre or within a specific timeframe. One of the things that determine these catastrophes is that they are impossible to predict. Andalucia is a seismic region and has experienced many earthquakes in recent years, although they have not caused major damage, or at least not at the level of intensity of what is being experienced in Turkey and Syria.
– Mercedes Feriche, head of Seismic Risk and Prevention at the Andalusian Institute of Geophysics, told ABC de Sevilla that “the seismicity in our region is a consequence of the energy generated by the thrust between the African and Eurasian plates. Bearing in mind that we are on an active plate boundary, the occurrence of earthquakes is ‘normal’, with the southeast of the Peninsula being the most affected area, especially the provinces of Granada, Malaga and Almeria”.
– Is it possible to predict a major earthquake?
One of the great unresolved issues in seismography is the prediction of major tremors that put the lives of many people at risk. In this sense, the director of the Institute of Geophysics, Mercedes Serrrano, commented that “we know that earthquakes occur in certain places and under certain conditions, and generally where one earthquake has occurred another will return. For this reason we know the places where earthquakes are most likely to occur. Geological, geophysical and historical seismicity studies allow us to estimate the most likely magnitude based on the characteristics of faults and geological structures in the region. What is more difficult to determine is the time at which the possible seismic shaking may occur”. Thus, the experts’ recommendation to prevent damage from possible earthquakes lies in prevention. Prevention has a lot to do with the measures to be taken in the event of earth tremors and, above all, with the seismic-resistant construction of buildings in areas with frequent seismic tremors.
***Earthquakes in Andalucia***
– Andalucia has many micro-earthquakes in the area of the Alboran Sea, or in the southeastern part of the region, but the province that has suffered the most earthquakes in history since records have been kept is Granada, some of which caused many victims in past centuries. The strongest was in the town of Dúrcal in 1954, where an earthquake measuring seven on the Richter scale did not cause any casualties because, fortunately, its epicentre was 650 kilometres underground. Eleven people died in the 1956 Albolote quake, which measured 5.0 on the Richter scale.
– Strong earthquakes have also been recorded in history in the provinces of Almeria, Malaga and Seville, all of them in past centuries and causing many victims. The death toll in these periods is higher because, obviously, the constructions were not prepared to withstand such tremors.
– Thus, Andalucia is a region that lives under constant seismic surveillance due to its location at the confluence of two tectonic plates and, although it does not usually experience large earthquakes, it is prepared, with the necessary prevention and appropriate constructions, to withstand the activity that usually affects its subsoil over the years. Remembering past events helps to avoid regrets in the future. Source, Spanish: https://sevilla.abc.es/andalucia/andalucia-tierra-sismica-probabilidades-produzca-terremoto-20230207140350-nts.html
AXARQUIA
Save Our Homes Axarquía to disband after 17 years of fighting:
– At 76 years old, Phillip Smalley admits to being “tired” of fighting for the legalisation of irregular housing built with municipal licenses, subsequently annulled, in the Axarquia in the last three decades. In 2021 he decided to sell the house he built in La Viñuela and has gone to live in a rented housing development in the town. After 17 years of fighting, at the end of January the board of the association Save Our Homes association (SOHA) , which Smalley has chaired since it was founded in 2006, decided to disband the association.
– “We have achieved as much as possible, stopped demolitions and legalised our houses,” summarises Smalley alluding to the Declaration to Assimilated Out of Ordination (DAFO), implemented by the Junta de Andalucía in 2012. “We have had up to 400 members, but now we were about 145, many have died, others got tired, sold their homes and went back to their country, others of us have decided to stay,” the La Viñuela resident explains. “I’ve had enough, I’m tired and I have no interest in continuing to fight,” Smalley, who was a councillor for the Partido Andalucista (PA) in the opposition in the La Viñuela town hall between 2011 and 2015.

RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA
One person arrested and a tattoo parlour in Rincón de la Victoria denounced: {Translation}
– The Guardia Civil has arrested a person and reported an establishment in the town of Rincón de la Victoria in Malaga for breaches of the regulations on the application of tattooing and skin piercing techniques. The action took place after the Guardia Civil officers in Malaga became aware that tattooing techniques were being carried out in a tattoo parlour in the town without the proper hygiene and sanitary conditions and hazardous health waste management.
– For this reason, the agents carried out an inspection of the establishment where 21 containers of inks banned by the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Health Products were found inside a compartment built on a wall as a double bottom and which was camouflaged by a mirror to avoid being located, the Guardia Civil said in a statement.
– In addition, they observed numerous sanitary material, such as needles and other sharp and pointed material that had already been used, inside several rubbish bags, which were going to be thrown into the urban waste container. This type of material must be handed over to an authorised hazardous waste manager for disposal. For these facts, the corresponding complaints were filed for infringements of the regulations on the application of tattooing and skin piercing techniques.
– During this inspection, almost 600 grams of hashish pollen distributed in several tablets were also located and seized, and a person was arrested for an offence against public health. The action was carried out by officers of the Civil Guard Company of Velez-Malaga. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/Detenida-establecimiento-tatuajes-Rincon-Victoria_0_1764124071.html
