What’s on Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar January Coming Excursions. Thursday January 18^th – Coach Excursion to Gibraltar. Why not join Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar and visit Gibraltar, a chance to take a Cable Car to the top of the Rock, see the Unique Barbary Apes. Visit the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, where you will find the Historic Tunnels dating from 1779-1783 and St. Michael´s Cave. Both of these have guided tours. In the town can be seen the Gibraltar Museum, Government House and in the Southern area are key historical sites. All information may be obtained from the Tourist Office, or an excellent alternative way of seeing the sights is by hiring a taxi, whose drivers are very knowledgeable and will explain the interesting, historical life of the Rock. It is also an opportunity to purchase Duty Free Items and typical English items of food, etc. from the Morrisons Super Market. Ticket price 12 Euros available at the Centre. Proceeds for fund raising. Departure times Puente don Manuel (Bar Mis Tapitas) 6.45, Algarrobo (Lidl) 7.15, Caleta (Vets) 7.20 and Torre Del Mar (Bus Station) 7.30. Depart Gibraltar15.30 approximately. PASSPORTS / I.D. REQUIRED. Thursday January 25^th – Coach Excursion to Zahara de la Sierra & Ronda. Please come and join friends on an excursion to the white village of Zahara de la Sierra which has one of the most stunning settings in the province of Cadiz, if not the whole of Andalucía. As you drive towards the village you see a castle built on a rocky peak at a height of 1100 meters above the turquoise waters of a lake and scattered below it are the whitewashed houses. On arrival at approximately 10.15 there will be free time to look around the village. The Plaza Mayor is Zahara’s main focus and heart, and a pretty place to stop in a bar to watch the world go by. Around the square are the Church of Santa Maria de la Meza, tourist office, Town Hall, souvenir shop, mirador (viewing spot), which offers splendid views over the reservoir, the countryside and across to the village of Olvera in the distance. You could also visit the castle above the town. The ‘castle’ is actually a six-hectare area on the rocky hill, known as the ‘Villa Arabe’ or ‘Villa Medieval’; its crowning glory is the Homage Tower. The path starts at the car park on the roof of Hotel de la Villa and is wide with a handrail in good condition but please note that it is a steep climb. The first historic building looks like the homage tower but is the Iglesia Major and you still have a long way to climb. Be careful here as the birds nest in the walls and make a mess on the path or persons below. The supporting buttresses are modern but the walls are original. You will re-join the coach at 12.30 for the drive to Ronda arriving at approximately 13.30. There will be free time in Ronda for lunch and to admire the spectacular view of the gorge from the 18^th century bridge, Puente Nuevo, which also divides the new part of town from the Moorish area. There is the Moorish mansion, and from this there an incredible underground stairway called Mina with 365 steps leading down to the river. There is also the cathedral, Roman baths, bull ring and much more to discover. You will leave Ronda at 17.30 for the homeward journey. Ticket price 20 Euros available at the Centre. Comment on previous article I was surprised to read yesterday’s article on sweet itch in Horses by Steven Rowle. I think the article is misleading and trying to make people believe that healing will fix sweet itch. That of course is incorrect information. I think the article should be mentioned again just in case anyone out there believes what he is saying. He goes on to say at the end that the horse still has sweet itch, so why start with all the ‘pretence’ of help being at hand in healing? Also horses do not wear ‘jackets’, even children know that. I am a qualified equine professional, accredited by the British Horse Society. I am not sure what Steven Rowles equine qualifications are ? I don’t write articles on healing. Information for Horse Owners The Trouble with Sweet Itch

To all you horse owners in the Axarquia area, Sweet itch is probably one of the most frustrating issues to encounter during the summer months. To the uninitiated, Sweet Itch comes in the summer months and is a condition caused by certain types of flies, biting the horse. These little bugs contain allergens in their saliva and the insect bites, cause allergic reactions. Initially the problem is seasonal, but it becomes progressively worse over time and eventually affects the individual all year round. The horse owner can only watch in despair, as self-inflicted trauma from rubbing and biting destroys a once magnificent coat, into an unsightly patchwork. Hair loss, bleeding and thickening of the skin begin, opening up the horse to potentially more infection. Vets are just as frustrated. Many medications are prescribed to treat the symptoms but they can only serve to cause more side effects and hinder the horses liver function. Salt therapy has made some head-way in recent years with lung issues and it has been known to help Sweet itch, but this means keeping the horse in a barn for long periods of time as it inhales the salt mixture. There are preventative measures like a horse jacket, keeping the horse away from watercourses, skin oils, etc, but they are either time consuming or impractical, what the horse needs is a boost to its own immune system to help it to cope with the reaction to the bite. As with a recent case help could be insight. The horse pictured lives in the Axarquia region and had been seen previously by Animal healing for its behaviour. He was carrying a lot of issues from a former life which has hindered his health. Once this was conquered only the Sweet Itch remained.
