SPAIN
Protesters camped out across Spain demand passage of housing measures:
– Thousands of protesters camped out on Madrid’s main square and in other Spanish cities demanded on Wednesday that parliament swiftly approve new measures to protect tenants and curb the country’s acute housing crisis. The demonstrations were ignited last week by the dramatic eviction of an 87-year-old woman from her Madrid home of more than seven decades. Her case highlighted mounting pressure on long-term tenants in major cities and tourist hotspots, where soaring rents, gentrification and a shortage of affordable housing have fuelled social and political unrest.
– Spain’s leftist minority government passed two decrees on Tuesday with a host of measures, including a ban on evictions of vulnerable tenants until 2030, but their full implementation hinges on approval by the fragmented lower house, which is due to hold a vote on Friday.
– Many activists said even those measures fell short of tackling the crisis. “It’s not enough — it might be a starting point or a stopgap,” 32-year-old pharmaceutical worker Julio Gomez told Reuters, adding that he was willing to stay with his tent in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol square for “as long as it takes”. Others criticised the government’s decision to split the measures into two separate bills with the expectation that one, which automatically extends leases to prevent abusive rent hikes, would be rejected by a slim right-wing majority. “They’ve done it so that one gets approved and the stronger one gets rejected, just to sneak one through by the skin of its teeth,” said veterinarian Gonzalo Sanchez, 26. Confirmed by the Workers’ Statute– it is forbidden to enter work if 12 hours have not passed since your previous workday ended: {Trans, summary}
– A worker in Spain must generally have at least 12 hours between the end of one working day and the start of the next. This requirement, set out in Article 34.3 of the Workers’ Statute, is intended to protect employees’ physical and mental recovery and reduce fatigue related risks and workplace accidents. If the minimum rest period is not respected, a worker can report the matter to the Labour Inspectorate.
– Depending on the interpretation applied, time worked without sufficient rest may also potentially be claimed as overtime, although workers are advised to discuss the issue with their employer first.
– Employers breaching working time and rest rules can face serious penalties, with fines ranging from €751 to €7,500 depending on the circumstances.
– In shift work, the rest period between shifts can be reduced on a case-by-case basis, for example, when a shift change occurs. In such cases, it can be reduced to a minimum of seven hours, provided that the difference to reach the required 12 hours is subsequently compensated with an equivalent rest period. These situations are regulated by Royal DecSource, Spanish: https://okdiario.com/curiosidades/confirmado-estatuto-trabajadores-prohibe…

Cocaine trafficking “increases year after year” in Andalusia– more than 29 tons seized in just eight months: {Trans, summary}
– Spanish authorities reported a marked increase in cocaine seizures across six Andalusian provinces under the V Special Plan for Campo de Gibraltar. Between January and August 2026, 29,423 kilograms of cocaine were seized, averaging more than 3.6 tonnes per month. By August, cocaine seizures had already reached 78.7% of the total recorded throughout 2025, according to Government Delegation figures.
– Officials attributed the changing trafficking methods to increased police pressure, saying cocaine is increasingly transferred offshore and redistributed among various vessels before reaching the coast. They also said improved training and technology are being introduced to counter more sophisticated trafficking organisations.
– Hashish nevertheless remained the most frequently seized drug, with 104,675 kilograms intercepted during the same period, representing 74% of all seized substances. Marijuana seizures totalled 6,882 kilograms. Authorities also reported nearly one million litres of seized fuel, approaching the entire 2025 total. El Borge raises its voice against the removal of the ATM and denounces that it worsens depopulation: {Trans, summary}
– The municipality of El Borge has spoken out after losing its cash machine, a situation also affecting Iznate, Totalán and Comares, causing deep unease among residents.
– The mayor, Raúl Vallejo {pic}, told Cadena SER Málaga that the machine was removed “overnight”, forcing residents to travel for everyday tasks such as withdrawing cash or paying bills. He stressed that older people are hit hardest, with 50% to 60% of residents potentially affected, many depending on others for transport.
– The nearest alternative is in Almáchar, about two kilometres away, a barrier for those without a vehicle or with mobility difficulties. A mobile cash machine visiting weekly has been proposed, but the mayor rejects it as clearly insufficient.
– The council says it has spent months seeking alternatives, including negotiations with banks to restore both cash machine and in-person services. The mayor links the issue to rural depopulation and demands greater public administration involvement. Source, Spanish: https://www.axarquiaplus.es/el-borge-alza…

Comic-Con Malaga is gearing up for its second edition with over 300 hours of activities and nearly 70,000 attendees: {Trans, summary}
– The second edition of San Diego Comic-Con Málaga is in its final stages of preparation at the Trade Fair and Congress Center (Fycma), which from October 1st to 4th will once again become a meeting point for fans of comics, film, television series, video games, and manga. The program features over 300 hours of content and international figures such as Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, John Rhys-Davies, Karl Urban, and Iñaki Godoy.
– Behind the big names, the stages, and the thousands of people who will pass through FYCMA during these four days, there are also dozens of workers who have spent weeks making it possible for everything to be in place. Now, amidst video screens being installed, fountains starting to work, and booths already waiting for their exhibitors, the venue is gradually shedding its construction-era appearance and becoming the Comic-Con that will welcome visitors. “This is not going to stop”– the camp for housing in Malaga continues in the Plaza de la Constitución & a demonstration is announced this Saturday: {Trans, summary}
– Hundreds of people are camped in Plaza de la Constitucion in central Malaga, protesting the housing situation. The Tenants’ Union and A Roof by Right set up the camp on Monday, after a protest outside Malaga City Hall over the eviction of Maricarmen, 87, in Madrid. At a Tuesday assembly of about 100 people, it was agreed to stay another night and another day. Campaigners say Maricarmen is back in her home, but that this is only the beginning. They are preparing a general strike, demand indefinite rentals, insist there must not be one more eviction, and say housing is a right and the system must change.
– The camp has grown from 23 tents on Monday to 50 on Tuesday and now 71. Organisers urged those present to keep the square clean and not to drink alcohol in public, so as not to give grounds for an eviction. They have called a demonstration against the housing crisis in Malaga for Saturday 3 October at 19:00, starting from the same square.
– The occupation is causing problems. Crowding and traffic problems are keeping tourists away, and businesses are losing clients. Speakers criticised the central government and mayor Francisco de la Torre, accusing them of governing with rentism, and criticised the splitting of the two housing decrees. Four evicted women addressed the crowd, explaining they will not benefit from the decrees. Another assembly will decide whether to extend the stay. The Triana road will be closed to traffic overnight from October 1st to 2nd due to hydraulic works: {Trans, summary}
– The Triana road will be closed to traffic from 7:00 PM on Thursday, October 1st, until 8:00 AM on Friday, October 2nd. The closure will affect the MA-3113 , between kilometer markers 4+300 and 4+400, due to ongoing improvements to the hydraulic infrastructure in the area.
– During those hours, users will have two alternative routes. The first runs through Almáchar, El Borge, Cútar, and Benamargosa , via the MA-3112, MA-3109, MA-3106, and MA-3108 roads. The second alternative connects Riogordo with Benamargosa via the MA-3107. Rural roads that bypass the construction zone can also be used. The road closure will therefore be limited to the hours necessary to carry out this phase of the work, with traffic being restored from 8:00 a.m. on Friday, October 2 .Source, Spanish: https://www.axarquiaplus.es/la-carretera-de-triana…

MIDDLE EAST
The US military says its withdrawal of troops from Iraq is complete:
– The U.S. military announced on Wednesday that it has completed the withdrawal of all American troops from Iraq, ending a 12-year mission to fight the Islamic State group. The last U.S. troops left an air base in northern Iraq under a deal between Baghdad and Washington.
– The withdrawal, agreed on two years ago, comes against the backdrop of the ongoing war between the United States and Iran that has also sometimes spilled over into Iraq, with Iran-backed militias firing on U.S. troops and the U.S. striking the groups’ strongholds. Baghdad touted the end of the U.S. mission as a sign of the country’s increasing strength and sovereignty.
– The withdrawal was also celebrated by Iran-backed groups but raised concerns among some other Iraqis, particularly in the Kurdish region. Meanwhile, questions loom around the future of the Iraqi militias, which the Baghdad government has sought to disarm with little success so far.

FINANCIAL
More pressure on housing– the Euribor exceeds the 3% barrier, driven by rising interest rates, making variable-rate mortgages more expensive by 1,000 euros per year: {Trans, summary}
– Pressure is mounting on the real estate market. Not only for those looking to buy or rent a home, but also for those who have already purchased one with a mortgage. The Euribor , the benchmark for most variable-rate mortgages in Spain, closed September exceeding the 3% mark, which will significantly increase the monthly payments for those with these loans.
– According to market data, the index ended the month at 3.233%, its highest price since July 2024. This level is 1.062 percentage points higher than it was in September 2025 , which will translate into significant increases in monthly payments. According to calculations by the mortgage comparison website HelpMyCash, an average variable-rate mortgage of €150,000, with a 25-year term and an interest rate of Euribor plus 1% with an annual review, will see its monthly payment increase from €725 to €813; about €88 more per month and about €1,054 more per year. With a six-monthly update, the monthly payments will increase from €756 to €813: a monthly increase of about €57 (about €340 more every six months).
– The financial website does not rule out that the year could end with a Euribor rate even above 3.5%. The effects of the rising Euribor, however, will not only be felt in existing mortgages but also in future ones. As Ricard Garriga, CEO and co-founder of Trioteca, explains, “If the index stabilizes near or above 3%, it’s logical that fixed-rate mortgage offers will become more expensive towards the end of the year.” Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/economia/mas-presion-vivienda-euribo…
