Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN

Sanchez Government Rebuked by Supreme Court as Judges Reject Attempt to Overturn Electoral Suspension, Upholding Separation of Powers; Supreme Court’s decision on the ‘grandchildren law’ closes the door to an appeal by the Government to the Constitutional Court: {Trans, summary}
– Spain’s Supreme Court has rejected the State Legal Service’s challenge to its precautionary suspension of voting rights for citizens who obtained Spanish nationality under the ‘Law of Grandchildren’. The ruling denies the Sanchez administration the right to appeal the decision to the Constitutional Court. Only individuals directly affected may seek constitutional protection, case by case, making any intervention before the general election on 29 November effectively impossible, particularly as voter registration has already closed.
– The Government and State Legal Service had sought to overturn the suspension, citing the practical impossibility of reviewing approximately 163,020 electoral registrations. The Supreme Court rejected this argument, maintaining that an administration cannot claim impossibility of compliance when its own failure to fulfil a judicial order is responsible. The authorities had not even supplied an approximate breakdown of the files reviewed.
– The judges stressed that electoral integrity and public confidence require an unquestionably reliable electoral register. They ruled that protecting the democratic process outweighs the voting rights of individuals whose registration circumstances and consular records remain insufficiently verified. The ruling represents a clear judicial rebuke to Sanchez’s administration, whose endless, abusive efforts to challenge the Court’s decisions risk undermining the separation of powers. Sanchez Accused of Breaking His Transparency Pledge and Concealing the Truth About Morocco’s Naval Incursions into Ceuta on July 30, “He has been lying for 75 days”: {Trans, summary}
– Pedro Sanchez faces mounting criticism over his handling of the Ceuta migration crisis after reports revealed that Moroccan warships entered Spanish territorial waters on 30 and 31 July.
– Sanchez had pledged to publish all reports concerning the crisis, promising “absolute transparency” so journalists and the public could establish the truth. However, the Government’s subsequent release of only 40 documents reportedly omitted, among other things, information about the Moroccan naval incursions, raising serious questions about whether his commitment was honoured.
– Ester Munoz, Deputy Spokeswoman for the People’s Party (PP) in the Spanish Congress of Deputies, delivered a damning accusation: “He has been lying for 75 days.” She condemned Sanchez for withholding information while presenting Morocco as a cooperative partner and trusted ally.
– PP Secretary-General Miguel Tellado likewise accused the Government of lying from the outset, disregarding warnings, discrediting the National Intelligence Centre (CNI), shifting blame to President of Ceuta Vivas, and abandoning Ceuta’s residents.
– The central issue is Sanchez’s pledge of full disclosure and the apparent gap between that promise and the information released. The omission of details about a significant naval incident raises serious questions about his transparency, credibility and political accountability. More Judicial Abuse From Sanchez Admin- The PSOE places two senior officials in key positions at the Court of Auditors, which is investigating the PSOE’s illegal financing: {Trans, summary}
– The PSOE faces accusations of manipulating Spain’s Court of Audit by appointing political allies to senior positions while its own party finances are under judicial scrutiny. Llanos Castellanos, a former PSOE Federal Executive member closely associated with Pedro Sánchez, has become the institution’s new manager without an open competition or publicly stated justification. Santiago Martínez Argüelles, a former socialist politician, already occupies a senior presidential technical post.
– These appointments raise serious concerns about impartiality and conflicts of interest. The manager oversees personnel, procurement and budgetary matters, and traditionally chairs recruitment examinations and the contracting committee. Critics argue that placing party loyalists in such sensitive positions risks compromising the independence of the institution responsible for auditing political parties.
– Meanwhile, Spain’s National High Court is investigating alleged irregularities in PSOE financing, including claims that illegal payments from public contracts reached the party through intermediaries. The PSOE denies illegal financing. The central concern is whether politically connected officials can credibly oversee scrutiny involving their own party. The IMF raises its inflation forecast for Spain to 3.7% and warns of unemployment that is almost double the European average: {Trans, summary}
– The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has significantly raised its inflation forecast for Spain in 2026 to 3.7%, seven tenths higher than in its previous spring report, while maintaining the unemployment rate at 9.8%, well above the European average.
– The new estimates paint a picture of persistent imbalances for the Spanish economy: prices will rise more than in the eurozone as a whole and unemployment will continue to be practically double the average of its partners, despite the greater dynamism of the gross domestic product (GDP).
– The IMF maintains its forecast of an unemployment rate of 9.8% for both this year and 2027, compared to the 6.3% estimated for the eurozone in both years. Although the organization expects a reduction from the 10.5% recorded in Spain in 2025, the difference with its European partners will remain at 3.5 percentage points.
– The government’s message is as clear as it is disingenuous: Spain will continue to grow faster than the major European economies.
– However, the reality is quite different. Spain is indeed growing, but it will do so with inflation above the eurozone average in 2026 and an unemployment rate that will remain significantly higher than that of its partners. ANDALUCÍA

UPCOMING LONG WEEKENDS– All Saints’ Day falls on a Sunday, 1 November, but Andalusia moves holiday to Monday– the November long weekend, and another one in December: {Trans, summary}
– Andalusia will have another long weekend at the beginning of November 2026. The date in question is November 1st, All Saints’ Day, a holiday that falls on a Sunday this year. However, that doesn’t mean workers will miss out on the holiday. In Andalusia, the day off will be moved to Monday, November 2nd, so many people will be able to enjoy three consecutive days off work.
– The 2026 work calendar confirms that Monday, November 2nd, will be a public holiday in nine autonomous communities. In addition to Andalusia, the following regions will also enjoy the Monday off: Aragon, Asturias, the Canary Islands, Castile-La Mancha, Castile and León, Extremadura, the Community of Madrid, and Navarre.
*The next public holidays in Andalusia after the November long weekend*
– The All Saints’ Day long weekend won’t be the last opportunity this year to enjoy a few days off. In fact, December will bring new dates that will allow you to make other plans before Christmas.
– December 6, Constitution Day, will also fall on a Sunday. In Andalusia, the holiday will be moved to Monday, December 7, while Tuesday the 8th will be a national holiday for the Immaculate Conception. This means that Andalusians who take Saturday and Sunday off will be able to enjoy a four-day weekend, Saturday through Tuesday, from December 5th to 8th, without needing to request vacation time.
– Then comes Christmas, on Friday, December 25th, another date that will allow for three days of rest for those who have the weekend free. Source, Spanish: https://www.elcorreoweb.es/andalucia/2026/10/13/festivo-santos-cae-domingo-andalucia-135275060.html

MARBELLA

Swedish Teenager Suspected of Contract Killing of Marbella Surgeon: {Trans, summary}
– An 18-year-old Swedish national has been remanded in custody without bail over the fatal shooting of German plastic surgeon Alexander Aslani, 57, at his Marbella clinic on Wednesday, 7 October 2026.
– The suspect was arrested on 8 October, less than 24 hours after the killing, and placed in provisional custody on 10 October. Police suspect he acted as a hired assassin and are investigating who commissioned the murder and whether accomplices were involved. The case remains under judicial secrecy.
– Investigators are examining possible links to dissatisfied patients, including complaints about surgical results and previous disagreements with the doctor. Further arrests have not been ruled out.
– The gunman, dressed in black with his face concealed, reportedly entered the clinic and shot Aslani repeatedly in the head before fleeing by motorbike. The suspect had been staying in tourist accommodation in Benalmadena and was reportedly preparing to flee when arrested.
– Investigators warn that increasingly young foreign hitmen are being recruited with promises of easy money. The motive and any wider involvement remain unconfirmed.

Concern as Slovakia restores military contacts with Russia:
– When Robert Fico sat opposite Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin in May, the Slovak prime minister said relations between their countries should extend beyond energy supplies. He told the Russian president that steps had already been taken to restore military attaches at their respective embassies.
– Five months later, the arrangement is now taking shape. Slovakia has sent two military officers — Brigadier General Slavomir Staviarsky and his deputy, Colonel Ivo Gahir — to Moscow and is preparing to receive a Russian military attache in Bratislava, restoring military-diplomatic representation for the first time since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. HEALTH

We Never Got Any Answers! – Mobilisation to demand transparency regarding the alleged use of expired reagents at the Axarquía Hospital: {Trans}
– “The aim of the protest is to demand clear explanations from the health administration about what happened and that it adopt all the necessary measures to guarantee the safety of patients and the protection of professionals,” explain Adelante Andalucía, AMAMA, Marea Blanca de Málaga, the Platform in Defense of Public Health, SAS Retirees and CSIF, organizers of a rally next Thursday, October 15, in Torre del Mar, to “demand transparency regarding the alleged use of reagents with loss of stability in the laboratory of the Axarquía Regional Hospital.”
– The CSIF reported the facts to the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office of Malaga last March, while “the internal investigation promoted by the management of the centre was archived without providing details of the investigation, casting even more doubts and concern about possible events that, if confirmed, could have important repercussions, both for the patients and for those responsible for the unit.”
– {So they investigated themselves? Then provided no info? That raises three legitimate questions:
– Independence: Who actually conducted the investigation? Was it handled by management, an internal compliance department, or an independent body?
– Accountability: Who authorised the closure of the investigation, and what evidence supported that decision?
– Transparency: Why were the investigative measures and findings not disclosed, at least in sufficient detail to explain the conclusion? -Ed.}
– The original complaint warned of the possible use in the laboratory of reagents that had lost stability or were expired, which, according to the relevant protocols, should have been withdrawn and replaced. Photographic evidence was published in many newspapers {pic, see yellow circles}. “These practices could have compromised the accuracy and reliability of certain clinical results and, therefore, affected diagnostic and care decisions for patients throughout the region,” explained the protest organisers. The ‘Halloween Fireballs’ are coming. Here’s what to expect from the Taurids this October:
– They don’t produce anything like the torrent of “shooting stars” associated with August’s Perseids or December’s Geminids, but the Taurid meteor showers have something else going for them — fireballs.
– The Taurids are famous for occasionally producing exceptionally bright, slow-moving meteors that can streak dramatically across the night sky from September to December. As a bonus, they’re visible from both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. That’s because they appear to emanate from the constellation Taurus, which sits close to the ecliptic, the apparent path the sun takes across the sky as Earth orbits around it.
– The Taurids are actually two closely related showers — the Southern Taurids and Northern Taurids. The Southern Taurids are already underway. According to the American Meteor Society, they’re active from Sept. 20 through Nov. 20, with two distinct components. The annual component peaks around Oct. 14, while a component particularly associated with fireballs peaks overnight on Nov. 4-5. That’s the night to circle if you’re hoping to see one of the “Halloween Fireballs.
– “The Northern Taurids begin later, becoming active on Oct. 20 and continuing through Dec. 10, according to the American Meteor Society. They’re expected to peak overnight on Nov. 11-12.
