Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

The Supreme Court lifts the arrest warrant against Puigdemont after the TC’s endorsement to amnesty the embezzlement: {Trans, summary}
– Spain’s Supreme Court has provisionally suspended the national arrest warrants against former Catalan president and Junts leader Carles Puigdemont, as well as former ministers Toni Comin and Lluis Puig. The decision follows the Constitutional Court’s ruling upholding an appeal concerning the application of the amnesty law to embezzlement linked to the Catalan independence process.
– Judge Pablo Llarena considers that the Constitutional Court’s ruling may affect the legal basis for the arrest warrants because the underlying facts and legal issue are substantially similar. He has therefore ordered an immediate suspension until the full ruling is available and its consequences can be assessed.
– The suspension does not yet mean that the amnesty has been granted to Puigdemont, nor does it extinguish his criminal liability or settle the remaining legal questions. Llarena will review the position once the Constitutional Court’s complete judgment is known and issue a reasoned decision. DGT intensifies monitoring of distractions while driving in Málaga until October 11: {Trans, summary}
– The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has activated a special campaign to monitor distractions while driving that will last until October 11 on all Spanish roads. During that week, agents from the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard and local police who join the initiative will monitor both interurban and urban roads.
– Agents will intensively monitor mobile phone use, interaction with passengers, eating while driving, or adjusting vehicle systems, among other behaviours. Alongside roadside monitoring, the DGT will deploy its automated means, such as cameras installed on roads, which allow verification if the driver is using their mobile phone while driving. The campaign is part of the European operation Focus on the Road, developed by the RoadPol (European Roads Policing Network). Photo: adslzone. The unemployment benefits for October won’t arrive on the 10th– why the SEPE (Spanish Public Employment Service) is paying them on Tuesday the 13th and which banks are advancing them: {Trans, summary}
– This month, SEPE benefits are arriving three days later than usual, and it’s not due to any error or problem with your file.
– The State Public Employment Service ‘s rules work like clockwork: benefits are paid on the 10th of each month, and if that day falls on a public holiday, on the next working day. This is stated on their website in the FAQ section. This October, however, the rules are working against them more than ever, because the 10th falls on a Saturday, Monday the 12th is a national holiday, and the payment is postponed until Tuesday the 13th. It’s the worst possible scenario: neither Saturday nor Sunday are working days, and on top of that, Spain’s National Day on the 12th will cause even further delays. However, it’s not all bad news. The delay is only in the calendar, because the full amount will be paid as usual.
– Since 2020 , when the Ministry of Labor reached an agreement with banking entities to advance the payment of benefits during the COVID period, several entities maintain the practice of making the transfer of the amount before the 10th by their own decision, without the SEPE having changed its official date. Among the banks that typically make advance payments are CaixaBank and Santander, although they are not the only ones. However, the payment date depends on each bank’s policy. If you’re interested in this method, we recommend contacting your bank for more information. Source, Spanish: https://www.adslzone.net/noticias/internet/sepe-advierte-retraso-paro-1026/

You can now request a postal vote for the November 29th general election: {Trans, summary}
– Following the publication in the Official State Gazette of the decree dissolving Parliament and calling an election, the deadline for requesting a postal vote begins this Tuesday, November 6. Voters can request it until November 19, ten days before the election.
– The application must be made by the voter themselves and can be submitted either in person or online, at post offices or through the forms available on the postal service’s website. Identification is required to request a postal vote. Those applying in person at a post office can use their physical ID card. Those applying online must identify themselves using an electronic ID or a valid digital certificate.
– Those who request a postal vote will receive the necessary voting materials at home between November 9 and 22. These will include a mailing envelope, the voter registration certificate, the ballot papers for the Congress and Senate, and an information sheet with instructions.
– Once they have received the voting materials, they can submit their completed postal ballot at a post office until November 26. Identification will be required when submitting the ballot. This additional requirement was introduced in 2023 following suspicions of electoral fraud in Melilla and other municipalities during the regional and municipal elections held on May 28.
– The Central Electoral Board (JEC) subsequently ruled that voters must present a national identity card, passport, driver’s license, residence permit, or “any other valid document that allows the voter to be identified” when submitting a postal ballot. This requirement also applied to the general elections held in July 2023.

Orient Express Corinthian Sailing Ship Makes Inaugural Visit to Málaga: {Trans, summary}
– On Friday 9 October, Málaga is due to receive the Orient Express Corinthian on its inaugural visit to the port. The 220-metre luxury sailing vessel, described in the source data as the world’s largest tourist sailing ship, will arrive from Marseille after a four-night voyage and then sail onwards to Cádiz, Portimao and Lisbon.
– The ship accommodates 110 passengers in suites ranging from 43 to 225 square metres, with luxury interiors, dining and leisure facilities. Its most distinctive feature is its sailing technology, developed largely by French shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique. Three 69-metre masts carry rigid sails made from glass fibre, carbon fibre and epoxy resin, covering 4,500 square metres. Wind provides the main means of movement in suitable conditions, supplemented by liquefied natural gas propulsion.
– Environmental features are presented as a major priority. The vessel is designed for future conversion to green hydrogen and has an organised recycling system. Its ballast-water treatment combines filters with high-intensity ultraviolet light, while other wastewater is treated and fresh water can be produced onboard. A dynamic positioning system assists during anchoring, and sensors are intended to prevent collisions with large marine mammals and other objects. NERJA
Three new ecological moorings protect the seabed of Maro from anchors: {Trans, summary}
– The Nerja coastline now boasts three new eco-friendly moorings for boats involved in diving activities. These mooring points allow boats to anchor without dropping directly onto the seabed, thus reducing the risk of damage to reefs and seagrass meadows.
– The action is part of a project promoted by the Andalusian Regional Government’s Ministry of Sustainability and Environment, which involves installing 25 moorings in various protected areas along the coasts of Málaga and Granada. Eight devices have been installed in the Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs Natural Area: three along the Nerja coastline and five off the coast of Almuñécar. According to the regional government, all eight are now in place.
– So far, 17 of the 25 planned have been installed. In addition to the eight in Maro-Cerro Gordo, there are five more in Punta de la Mona and four in Calahonda-Castell de Ferro. Gosport migrants- Hampshire police bring in dispersal order for an entire town ahead of migrant boat landing: {Summary of 2 articles}
– Police have placed a dispersal order on the whole town of Gosport as preparations continue for a migrant boat landing. The order means that anyone in Gosport who does not leave an area when asked to by a police officer can be arrested.
– Haslar Bridge has been closed by police, and there are coaches at Blockhouse already. This also happened on September 22, when the occupants of a boat were apparently originally going to be taken to Gosport but were eventually taken to Dover by sea.
– Despite the imposition of the police orders to protect the illegal migrant ‘megadinghy’ landing on Sunday, protests were staged near the Haslar Marina, where locals sought to create a blockade. Footage on social media appeared to show the protesters chanting “send them back” {Image below. Too much bad language for me to post. See it here: https://x.com/georgedmadgwick/status/2106856023164064043 -Ed.}.
– However, the hardline police response ultimately prevailed, and the 120 illegals were brought ashore at Fort Blockhouse, the former home of the Royal Navy Submarine Service. The illegals had been escorted into British territorial waters by the French boat Abeille Liberté and then escorted the rest of the way by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), according to the Portsmouth Evening News. Once ashore, the illegals were loaded onto buses and sent with police escort to Kent to presumably have their asylum claims logged.

US pulls bombers out of UK’s Fairford airbase after arrests:
– A week after several men were detained at the Royal Air Force (RAF) base in the UK’s Fairford on suspicion of planning terrorist attacks, a Pentagon official announced that the United States had removed its B-1 bombers from the base northwest of London. On Sunday, aircraft monitoring sites showed the B-1 aircraft flying out of the UK base.
– “While operational security precluded us from confirming the movement of our assets and forces in real-time, we can acknowledge now that all US bombers that were deployed to RAF Fairford have re-deployed to their home stations in the United States,” a Pentagon spokesman wrote in a statement.
– A dozen B-1 bombers had been stationed at RAF Fairford, the British airbase used by the US. London previously allowed the Pentagon to fly sorties out of Fairford against Iranian missile sites which were threatening ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
– What do we know about the suspected plot? Last Sunday, police were called to a base in southwest England after a local farmer reported a group of men in several vans engaging in “suspicious” activity. Investigators blocked off the area and called in the bomb disposal teams. However, no explosives were found in the vehicles. Later, the five British nationals arrested in connection to the incident were released on bail.
– US President Donald Trump voiced his disappointment over their release. On Wednesday, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said that Britain had “strong indications” that Iran was involved in a suspected plot targeting the base. Iran dismissed the accusations as baseless and summoned the British ambassador in Tehran to discuss the issue. Full article: https://www.dw.com/en/us-pulls-bombers-out…

ENERGY CRISIS
Electricity prices exceed 200 euros/MWh for the first time since the energy crisis caused by the war in Ukraine- what times are least expensive: {Trans, summary}
– The average wholesale electricity price will reach €201.99 per megawatt-hour (MWh) this Tuesday , the highest value since December 5, 2022 , at the height of the energy crisis triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. According to data from OMIE (the Iberian Energy Market Operator), Spain has once again surpassed the psychological barrier of €200/MWh. At that time, the reduction in Russian gas supplies drove up energy prices across Europe and pushed the electricity market to record highs. In fact, the record for the Spanish wholesale market was set in March 2022, when it reached €544.98/MWh .
– This time, the causes are different from those of the Ukraine crisis, but they share some common features. The price of natural gas has once again put upward pressure on energy markets, while there is lower wind power generation and greater reliance on combined cycle power plants to meet electricity demand. Added to this is international geopolitical uncertainty, especially in the Middle East, which continues to influence energy and commodity markets.
– The price increase is not a phenomenon exclusive to Spain. European market data shows that on Tuesday, France will register a virtually identical average price of €201.37/MWh , while Germany will be around €202/MWh . Italy, traditionally one of the countries with the most expensive electricity, will once again be above both, with an average price exceeding €233/MWh.
*The most expensive and cheapest times of day*
– According to OMIE data, the day will begin with prices above €200/MWh and will register an initial peak during the morning, when electricity will reach €251.79/MWh between 8:00 and 9:00 AM. Prices will then decrease thanks to high photovoltaic production and will bottom out during the afternoon. The daily low will be recorded between 3:00 and 4:00 PM, at €147.09/MWh. From that moment on, a new escalation will begin, taking the price up to €260/MWh between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. and up to the daily maximum of €274.70/MWh between 9:00 and 10:00 p.m., coinciding with the period of highest demand of the day.
*The market price is not the bill the consumer pays*
– The figure of €201.99/MWh corresponds to the wholesale market and is not directly equivalent to the amount of a household electricity bill. As the OCU (Spanish Consumers’ Organization) points out, the electricity bill includes other charges such as contracted power, regulated tolls and fees, adjustment costs, meter rental, and taxes.
– Consumers most exposed to these fluctuations are those on the Voluntary Price for Small Consumers (PVPC), the regulated tariff. However, even in these cases, the bill does not depend exclusively on the daily market. The reform of the PVPC has reduced the weight of the wholesale market in the bill: it currently represents approximately 45%, while the rest comes from futures market references (contracts closed in advance to buy electricity at a price agreed upon in the future) to smooth out fluctuations. Tennis News- Medvedev pays dearly for his ball-hitting incident in Beijing, a $220,000 fine & 200 ATP points deduction: {Trans, summary}
– Daniil Medvedev faces a harsh punishment after his controversial disqualification from the ATP 500 in Beijing. The Russian tennis player accidentally hit a spectator with a ball after losing a point in the semifinals of the tournament, where he was playing Novak Djokovic. The negative consequences of this action extend far beyond his elimination at the hands of the Serbian. The former world number one will lose the $220,000 prize money and 200 ATP points he had earned in Beijing. Furthermore, the sporting sanction could seriously jeopardize his participation in the ATP Finals.
– Novak Djokovic was leading 5-3 in the second set, after winning the first, when the incident occurred. Frustrated by the situation, Medvedev hit a ball into the stands, which struck a spectator in the face. The spectator had to be treated on the court for the injury. The action left no room for doubt.
