Sand Flies

To the person who wrote about the sand flies. I have lived in the campo , with the beasts for 25 years. Two things help. One is invaluable

Firstly, buy Espirales. They are spirals that you light andd they produce smoke which keeps them away. I put one on the door step, And, if I’m having friends to dinner, i put on under the table. Just be careful not to burn your toes !

The second ; don’t swat them as you would do a normal mosquito. Look at the place where they are biting And , slowly squash it with a finger. Slowly, because it’s the pressure of air you make when you swat that warns them that they are in danger. It works every time.Pamela

Taking Adopted Dogs to UK

I came back to UK from Spain just over a year ago and helped rescues in Spain send adopted dogs to the UK and other places. I do not think things have changed re the chipping since I helped the last dog come here around a year ago. I also brought my own adopted Spanish dog with me on return to the UK.

We stopped even bothering to try and re register chips to a “new owner” in Spain via RAIA before travel – the reason – you will have to pay 15 Euros (or it was the last time I did it) and the chip IS NOT internationally linked! The paperwork can be sent to RAIA to tell them the dog is no longer in Spain as the charge is only made for “changing” the paperwork, not canceling it. We were paying unnecessary fund raised money for something that was never going to be relevant in the UK. Also, by the time RAIA got their act together, it could be 3-6 months after the dog had already gone to the UK. In one case, we sent the dog and forwarded the RAIA paperwork and registration on later, but it was totally irrelevant as it is not needed in the UK to register your dog here and is not needed at the crossing.

What happens is that the number in the passport and the number on the chip must match. As long as that is correct then there are no worries. Remember that pet transport companies will be taking dogs for owners – so the dogs are “not their dogs” so there does not have to be ANY registration match to an owner’s address or any own other address to travel, someone could just as easily be taking the dog to the UK on behalf of someone else so all that matters is that the chip inside the dog and the number on the dog’s passport match.

If someone is taking an adopted dog to the UK then what they will want is a letter from the charity/rescue group to say that you have adopted the dog:

Letter to be on the rescue or charity’s headed paper
The adopter’s name, addresses, contact details and phone number to be in the letter – both previous Spanish address and new UK address
A description of the dog and the possible breed/cross breeds, colour markings etc
The charity to state clearly they confirm the dog is a rescue dog for the purpose of registering the microchip on the UK database
The chip number of the dog
The dog’s passport number
Signed by an official of the charity – with their contact number, e-mail, phone details in case it is necessary for them to be contacted.

This means when they get to the UK they can go to their new UK vet and get their dog’s chip registered with one of the chip companies here. The UK vet doesn’t do the registration like they do in Spain – the chip company does this direct with the owner. What the vet will do is scan the dog and tell the owner which of the chip companies will cover that number. The vet can give you the relevant chip company’s number to phone. Then go home and call the company.

The chip company will go through some questions with the owner on the phone – it is important for the owner to tell them that their dog is ADOPTED and you understand they will then cover him FREE OF CHARGE. This is why the owner needs a letter from the charity. The company will then send the owner the necessary paperwork to fill out and when they post it back the owner should include the adoption letter (keeping a copy of course for their own records) and they will then be sent the official confirmation that they have a dog registered with a UK chip company, and all for free.

To confirm, I have done this with my own adopted dog and a number of others I helped with adoption in the UK.

Response to Advice _Dog Chipping in two countries also Travelling

In order to safeguard your dog in both Spain and the UK all you need to do is to visit your vet in the UK and have both addresses registered on the database. Our dog had been micro chipped and registered in Spain for 8 years but we spend 6 months in each country so we simply had our address in England added. We did this last summer through our vet and only had to pay a small fee to the database company.

With regard to crossing the Channel we find using the Tunnel preferable as the dog is not left on its own in the hold of a ferry.

What Was On…Success ! – Competa Art Walk

The 8th Artwalk was a great success!

We estimate that over 2000 people visited the village to enjoy the artwork experience.

Coming from Almeria, Fuengirola, Marbella, Estapona, Malaga, Granada, Orgiva and many more towns. Many residents and tourists who come a few times a year to the village booked time especially for this event.

We had beautiful weather – never having had such a dry and sunny weather during the Art Walk days. Most artists were present and visitors enjoyed talking with them and exchanging ideas about art.

This year we also had live music in various locations. A great combination with art.

The bars and restaurants were packed. They didn’t expect so many guests for this event.

Eighteen of the participants live in or near the village, of whom most are of professional level, the other 10 were invited. Some guest artists came from the Costa del Sol or Costa Tropical – like English Annabel Keatley (Salobrena) Anouk Slegers (Marbella) George Kowzan (Malaga). From further away came Dutch artist Merel Holleboom – all the way by van from Holland to Spain with her drawing machine and many other artworks from colleagues. A lot of people enjoyed making a ‘monoprint’ with her installation!

Iraqi painter Saad Ali came from Valencia, he brought his colorfull paintings on panels and canvas. Dutch Karin Hoogesteger and Danish Ane Meiert Folke and Martin Nybo Jensen came by plane.

There was so much different art to see – abstract, figurative paitnings and drawings, sculptures, jewelry, furniture and so on. There was also a papermaking workshop and a demonstration of raku-firing and silver casting. For young people there were two kids arts workshops.

Artists did have a great time, meeting the interested visitors and meeting colleague artists and did have (some) sells as well. Visitors were pleasantly surprised by the quality and variety of the art on display, loving the vibrant and creative ambiance in the village. Many thought the trip to the village was well worth it, despite all the bends to journey up into the mountains. Paul Wind will be making a documentary about the event. All of us are looking forward to that report. Next year we’ll go for the 9th time!

New Home Need for Lola

Lola is about four years old little girl. Weight about 4 kg and less than 30 cm. She was very afraid when she was found but now she is in a foster home and improved a lot only in few days.

Follows her foster mother and comes when you call her. Lola is very curious and vigilant and does not bark in vain. This little lady needs a normal, peaceful home where she can feel safe and gets lot of love. Lola is chipped, vaccinated and sterilized and is waiting for her forever home. Transporting a Dog from Spain into the UK via Calais

The physical transportation of a dog from Spain (EU) to the UK is fortunately very easy providing you follow the regulations, which are :- that the dog is micro chipped and that the chip identifier Number when scanned agrees with the dogs passport.

That the dog has an up to date Rabies inoculation recorded in the passport

That the dog receives from a vet an authorised treatment for Worms and that the vet has recorded the date the time (most important) and the product used on the dogs passport and stamps the passport with their official stamp. The treatment for Worms is time limited and must be given no less that 24 hours prior to travel and no more than 120 hours .

Since that gives you 5 days to travel from Spain to the channel ports you will find it cheaper and more convenient to have the worm treatment here in Spain before you leave rather than in France. Also although you can turn up at Calais and book on the spot I would recommend that you pre book your crossing as this makes the whole operation much smoother.

All of the ferry routes from France to the UK require the dog to travel in the car whilst on the ferry you will not be allowed to travel in the car on the ferry, all the ferry operators are much the same no one is any better or worse than the others

The procedure at the ferry port is – drive up to your chosen ferries booths (some have dedicated booths for those travelling with pets) present your ticket, they generally ask you to scan your dog having examined both yours and the pets passport they will issue your boarding card, then go wherever they tell you to go and wait to be loaded.

I have travelled with my dogs regularly ever since the pet passport came into being the and the question of ownership has never arisen or been checked .

Not only am I now feeling much better prepared, but my local vet in Cómpeta has just successfully (and surprisingly!) done the RAIA chip transfer…today was a good day! Nikki

UK Dog Database

Further to the question re taking dogs to the UK it may be of interest to know that the UK has just enacted legislation (from this April) that requires all dogs to be micro chipped, and details recorded on a data base.

Since the pet passport requires dogs to have a chip our Spanish dogs will obviously comply with these new regulations; however what is not clear is how long a dog can remain in the UK without being re registered on the UK data base and since this is brand new legislation and that the majority of UK residents are still blissfully unaware of its existence it may be some time before all the twists and turns unwind and such information becomes available. So if you are permanently importing your dog into the UK you may need to bone up on these new regulations although as yet there does not appear to be any definitive Government site setting out the rules and regulations. Mosquitos

The writer of question about where to buy small mesh mosquito screens is confusing two different flies that bug us here in the campo. The phlebotomus is a sandfly that is thought to carry leishmaniosis and is not the same as the white-winged cochineal fly that comes off the prickly pears. It is the male of the species that has the wings …. see photos in this link here http://www.pestproducts.com/cochineal-bug.htm and if you look at the white winged fly with a magnifying glass you can clearly see the two filaments that are at the rear of the fly.

We too were bombarded with the cochineal fly for the first time ever last year and they came through our mozzie nets and covered everything in sight (especially the TV screen). The red dye they leave when you inadvertently quash them is cochineal dye. I have been covered in them but have never been bitten, and as far as I can find out, they do not bite.

What we do have here that causes us a lot of problems is a tiny pale mosquito that you can barely see. It bites and causes a large wheal to come up (rather like a nettle sting). We find that if we can resist scratching it for 10 minutes it seems to subside and doesn’t last as long as a true mosquito bite would last. In the 20 years we have had property here we have always suffered from these tiny mosquito creatures – perhaps those are sand flies? It is only last summer that we first encountered the cochineal fly which seems to be around this year too unfortunately.

Dry Cleaning for Toilet Paper?

We have rented a finca in the campo. The problem we are facing, our landlord doesn´t want us to throw toilet paper into the loo. He is using the water of the septic tank (pozo negro) for the irrigation of his garden and is afraid that the paper is clogging his pump system. Is there anybody out there who can recommend a dry cleaning service for the paper to keep our buckets clean and tidy.

Wanted – Flyscreens x-tra small needed

I live in the Campo above Arenas and I am tortured by what the Spanish call “Mosquito Blanco“. The Latin name of those beggers is Phlebotomus Mascittii. They do not sting like “normal“ mosquitos, but bite and feed from the pool of blood created by this. They are very small…the body size is well below 1mm and they have comparatively large, white-ish wings what makes them bad flyers once the wind is blowing. Because of their size you usually do not even notice them landing on your skin. They are also known to transport Leishmaniosis which is quite dangerous for animals but sometimes also for humans. Once you squash them they smear quite an astonishing amount of red dye…which appears to be the same dye as in the whitish disease that makes the prickly pear cactus die all around. They appear an hour before sunset in swarms. My problem is that once I am bitten, I have a very strong histamine reaction, creating long-lasting, very itchy and big water-filled bumps. Most of the people around me up here are surely also bitten but do not show reactions…subsequently not even registering it. My house has fly screens on all windows, but they have the “normal“ mesh of about 1mm. The Mosquito Blanco flies right through them.
Can anybody point me to a place that sells fly screens with a wire mesh of about 0,4 or 0,5mm? I have already tried some window-selling places but they all only use the 1mm version.
Also: Does anybody know about electronic fly traps (those things that “grill“ insects with an audible “Zap“ that work with white light and have an electric mesh small enough for these insects? Normally these traps have blue light which is ignored by the white mosquito. Thanks for your help

Would anybody know where I can buy tiles with designs/colours like those in the picture? I have already been to some places but was told that this design is at least 30 years old and subsequently not available anymore through ordering. The only solution would be to find a shop that is large enough to have considerable amounts of tiles in stock/storage…and by this maybe also have “rests“ of older ones. Driving with a dog from Spain to UK via Calais – advice please

I’d be grateful if someone could talk me through what is needed for taking a dog back from Spain to the UK.

I’ve adopted a dog here through one of the local animal charities and he has his Spanish pet passport, which I believe is up-to-date. I’ll be driving my own car, through Spain and France, with ferry from Calais to Dover.

My sticking point is that his chip is still registered to his deceased owner and the process to transfer this to me will take longer than I’m able to remain in Spain. (Spanish vets are refusing to transfer his chip registration to me, even with the charity adoption papers, and the registro RAIA needs to write to the deceased owner…(!))
My plan was to see a vet in France before the ferry crossing for the required “check” before travel, and I need to know if it’s an issue that his chip is not registered to me, and I don’t have a letter of authority (from his deceased owner…) to transport him..? Do French vets even have access to the Spanish Registro RAIA?

Also, any thoughts on the better ferry company, DFDS or P&O, for travelling with a dog?

Wednesday 13^th April – Coach Excursion to Salobreña & Kitty Harri´s Sculpture Garden. Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar invite you to join friends on a coach excursion to visit the town of Salobreña situated on the Costa Tropical, whose history stretches back 6000 years. You will climb the very steep hill to visit the old part of the town where the Moorish castle built in the 10^th century is situated, which you will be able to visit provided it has re-opened after renovation, entrance ticket included. You can also see the Mudejar 16th century church, Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario which is built on top of the old mosque. There will also be free time to have lunch.

After lunch you will re-join the coach for a drive up the valley in the direction of the village of Otivar to visit the Kitty Harri´s Sculpture gardens set in two acres, which straddle a mountain ridge that projects into the Valle Tropical (Tropical Valley). There are 150 plus artworks to see and the gardens are continuously evolving, containing many species of palms, shrubs and trees from around the world. There are magnificent views, north to the Almijara and Cazulas mountain ranges, south to the Mediterranean Sea and on a clear day the Rif mountains of Africa. The entrance fee and refreshments which they serve are included. Ticket price per person 29 Euros available at the Centre. Proceeds for fundraising. Thursday 21^st April – Coach Excursion to Gibraltar. Why not join Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar and visit Gibraltar, a chance to take a Cable Car to the top of the Rock, see the Unique Barbary Apes. Visit the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, where you will find the Historic Tunnels dating from 1779-1783 and St. Michael´s Cave. Both of these have guided tours. In the town can be seen the Gibraltar Museum, Government House and in the Southern area are key historical sites. All information may be obtained from the Tourist Office, or an excellent alternative way of seeing the sights is by hiring a taxi, whose drivers are very knowledgeable and will explain the interesting, historical life of the Rock. Tuesday & Wednesday 3^rd & 4^th May – Coach Excursion to Cordoba Patios. Please come and join friends of Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar on a 2 day/ 1 night coach excursion to see the Festival of the Cordoba Patios. This is a contest of patios and crosses that was first started in 1918, where house owners of the city decorate their homes with beautiful flowers and plants in order to win the prestigious awards presented by the municipality. The patios are in various parts of the city, close to the Jewish quarter and Cathedral and the finest example is found in the Palacio de Viana.

On the first day you will stop for breakfast on the way to Cordoba where you will arrive at approximately 11.00am. You will check in to the 3* Hotel Selu, which is situated about a 10 minutes walk to the Cathedral. The rest of the day is free to discover the city and have dinner.

After breakfast on the second day there will be a guided tour in English of the patios, after which there will be free time to have lunch and the coach will depart from Cordoba at 16.30. What’s on – Lux Mundi, Fuengirola coming events and excursion

Wednesday 13^th April – Coach Excursion to Comares and Colmenar. Please come and join friends of Lux Mundi, Fuengirola on a coach excursion to 2 white villages in the Axarquia area of the Costa del Sol. Comares is situated on a cliff over 725 meters above sea level, with wonderful views of the Sierra de Tejeda and the Velez Malaga valley down to the sea. Its history dates back to pre-Roman times and the main traces of occupancy are Arabic. The town fell to the Mores to the Christians in 1487.

You will arrive in Comares at approximately 11.00h where you will have free time for lunch and can follow the ceramic footprints which show you the way through the very narrow streets of the village to visit the watch tower, ancients town walls, water storage tanks, inscribed stonework, cemetery and the many natural viewing points where you can admire the breath taking views to Velez Malaga and inland, the snow caped mountain ranges of Tejada and Almijara.

You will then depart Comares at 14.00h driving across the Viñuela Reservoir embankment and through the beautiful country side to the village of Colmenar, stopping for coffee on the way. Here you will visit the Honey Museum, where you will learn about how the bees produce the honey and a chance to try some of the different types of honey which is for sale. You will depart for Fuengirola at 17.30h. Ticket price 22 Euros available at the Centre. Departure times Feria Ground 8.55h or Bull Ring 9.00h.

Thursday 14^th April – Quiz Night. . Please come and enjoy our Quiz Night at the Lux Mundi, Fuengirola, and Centre. Team up with friends and pit your wits in this fun quiz. Opposite the new roundabout here there are two white single storey buildings and we rehearse in La Casa Cultura at 5.30 to 8.00. 10 mins. Drive max. from El Ingenio shopping mall.

Approaching from Puente Don Manuel, take A7205 which bypasses Viñuela village and right at the end of the village, right opposite the new roundabout, you’ll see two white single storey buildings on the right and just past the roundabout is an earth parking area next to a chain link fence. Park here. Ring and let us know if you are coming and we will bring some spare music.

After much success obtained with our presentation evenings “Las Noches de Burriana” and after receiving a huge number of congratulations on the quality of the show and the dinner, we return to present an Evening of Opera at the Restaurant Burriana Beach Sun on 8 April at 20’30h.

Concert tonight we have made two changes, one in the program offered and one in the int éinterpreters changing the tone barí by a mezzosoprano.

The artists who come this time are: Alba Chantar, soprano, our accomplice who has already acted with us on several occasions and that all quality measured at arti stica; CristinaGuerbós, mezzosoprano, He has a great career as an opera singer, she has performed as asoloist at the Teatro Real in Madrid in the opera “Ainadamar” has played the role of Flora in “La Traviata” and has been Eurydice in “Orpheus and Eurydice” and Dido in “Dido and Aeneas”. Accompanying both singers is Daniel Diaz pianist and professor at the Conservatory of Malaga and pianist repeater in the Cervantes Theater in Malaga. It has been the pianist accompanying singers like Carlos Alvarez and Tatiana Anisimova and teaches at the Haydn The Progessive program of Austria at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin.

Belated Entry :- Fund Raising by ALA

The Asociacion de Los Amigos based at Torrox Park ran several events last week to raise funds for the BBC Sport Relief week. They raised at total of €1,264

through various sponsored events and other activities over the course of the week. Well done to everyone who supported us!
TAIL Torrox Wonderful Help from & for Volunteers !!

Following the increase in overseas volunteers coming to help at the Tail Refuge, for whom we have to provide accommodation, we were thrilled to acquire at an advantageous price (and with thanks to Tail Buddies for their €700 donation to part fund) a good condition caravan. This was collected by John & Alex (Men with Vans – 602 438 130 / 636 121 289) from Almayate and towed into position yesterday. We wish to put on record our Charity’s thanks for their goodwill and help. Tail appreciates all the help it receives, be it from volunteers undertaking work in the Refuge or the shops, or from donations received. Now might be a good time to let all know that the Junta’s official vet for this region recently called Tail’s Refuge “probably one of the cleanest in Andalucía”. We try…… we try very hard.

Services Needed –Water Supply

I hope you can help with this. The water supply to the house via a deposito is cutting off after a while. A new pump has been fitted, a valve in the deposito has been replaced. I need to keep going out to the pump fill the reservoir to pump water into the house. It seems to be baffling the guy who fitted all this stuff. The pressure is low and starts to trickle and stops.

It’s a shame that a lot of items in Digamextra are appearing too late to be of any use. Perhaps Jane could let people know the deadline for publishing, and organizers could send in details of events in time for people to plan to attend.

Responses – Driving Licences-

I can’t advise about car hire in Torrox but I have experienced the problems of the demise of Part B – the paper licence. When the UK got rid of them I scanned mine and then shredded the original . You can prove whether you have any points by going to the DVLA website and entering your licence number and your National Insurance number to get a print-out. You can also get a code that you can give to a car hire company so they can check your details. It works just once and has a limited period of validity. I have had enormous problems with Trafico though. When applying for a Spanish licence they demanded the original Part B, they wouldn’t accept a copy, a print out or the code. I had to get a denuncio to say I had lost my Part B and they then wrote to the DVLA to confirm my details. The DVLA took the attitude of “they can check on-line”. It’s 5 months since my application and my solicitor tells me that my documents have gone to the department that prints the cards, but I still haven’t received it. Vic

(1) Ian, you will find at least two types of back bacon in Supersol at Torrox Costa. Go past the bread and veg. section and there is a fridge on the right and there are quite a few different bacons.Hope you find it as tasty as the one from Lidl. We have found that as soon as we find something we like there they discontinue it! Peggy

(2) I suggest that Ian visits Mercadona in Algarrobo Costa, where he will
find English back bacon
( not frozen and in packs) on the shelf opposite the counter where
they carve up various Spanish hams and sausages to order. I noticed
it there recently as I was buying Mercadona’s own streaky, which we
always use because it is much tastier than the English back, and has
less water content. It is probably the same in other Mercadona
stores, but not having visited them recently I can’t be sure. Happy

What’s on –Competa Art Walk

As part of the Art Walk in Competa, artists are offering workshops and showing how to raku-fire ceramics.

English artist Annabel Keatley offers a workshop in the Salon de Actos of the Town Hall.

On Saturday 26 March from 4pm to 6pm Annabel will be leading a plant paper making workshop. Participants will learn the whole process of cooking and breaking down plant fiber in order to create their own wonderful fibrous plant papers made from Esparto grass. The process is time consuming but can be carried out afterwards at home and with just about any plant fibre. Participants will also be able to add inclusions and emboss their plant papers. You can make an art trail along 18 locations with works by 28 International artists. It has become a tradition and more and more visitors are coming to Competa around the easter period. The rules for Blogs have changed and it now means that I could face a fine if I publish any negative reviews of any person or company – even though it may be true or half true.
