– The January Bio Beach U3A second Wed. Lecture is cancelled in January due to the holidays. We will make it up in Feb. when we’ll present two in one month, both at 11am.
– On Wednesday Feb. 8th: The Spanish Civil War: On Feb. 8th at 11am, join us for a heartfelt discussion on what started in July 1936. If you remember last year, I presented La Desbandada, to commemorate the carnage on A340 in our area. This year, The Deadly Dry Run for WW2, a 22mn video will feature background comments (in English) to help our verbal momentum. Jose Manuel Cabezas Cabello, will facilitate the discussion, post viewing the video. This promises to be an educational and sobering session.
– On Wednesday Feb. 15th: Great 20th Century Crooners features 17 different artists and 29 tracks from these singers. The presentation traces the evolution and development of the musical style of crooning from the 1940’s onwards.
– Art Gallery: Exhibition of Paintings and Objects. Local artist Coby Bloemsma is exhibiting her latest work (pic) in the restaurant of Bio Beach Club. Semi-abstract in style, Coby’s paintings often have the human figure as subject. She uses acrylics and mixed-media. Her objects and sculptures are made from recycled materials. Blocked Websites and/or Blocked Video Playback on Websites- Why It Happens and How to Fix It With EPIC Browser:
– NOTE: This article is about accessing legal content that is improperly blocked. It is NOT about illegally accessing restricted content.
– All the major browsers, Chrome/Firefox/Opera/Edge, are now integrating blacklisting functions to aid the copyright police in enforcing premium content protections and geo-location restrictions. These browsers, in their efforts to block pirate sites, also block many legit sites. Or they can allow the website to open, but prevent the videos on the website from playing. I see this most often on websites that offer streaming sports content, as well as on alternative news websites. This blocking happens in the browser, so your VPN does not provide a work-around. There is a way to bypass these incorrect browser based blocks.
– Before blaming your VPN for failing to allow you to access certain content, try using another, less popular browser, that does not have the blacklisting limits the tech giants are forcing on us. I have the best success on hard to open websites, or with videos that refuse to load, using EPIC Browser. It is based on Chrome, but has all the tracking and blacklisting functions removed.
– While there are many of these Chrome based alternative browsers available (Brave, Chromium, UnGoogled Chrome, UR, etc.), EPIC Browser is consistently successful in displaying content blocked by the others. EPIC even has its own built-in, free VPN. In certain situations, when using your own VPN, and the programming refuses to play even in EPIC, try enabling the EPIC VPN in addition to your own VPN. Try the default sever location first (USA, East Coast), but if that fails, try the other 8 other server locations (USA West Coast, Canada, UK, Germany, France, NL, India & Singapore). You will almost always find one that works. This has gained me access to even the hardest to access websites and videos.
– You may have to go into EPIC’s Settings to enable the free VPN function before you can use it.
– Epic also has a built-in ad-blocker that works well. In some cases, you may need to disable the EPIC ad-blocker to get sites or videos to load.
– The main drawback of EPIC is that you only have the choice of 2 default search engines, Yahoo and Epic Search. I don’t like either of those, so I bookmark my preferred search engines for quick access.
– Firefox fans that want to avoid browser blacklisting can try Firefox based alternative browsers. I suggest Pale Moon and Waterfox for the Firefox experience with fewer the restrictions and less blacklisting.

The price of electricity drops 45.5% this Monday, to 11.71 euros/MWh: {Translation, summary}

Deaths in Malaga province increase by 15 per cent:
– The second quarter of 2022 set a very striking record for deaths, both in Andalucía and in Malaga.
– Between April and June of last year, 3,451 people died in Malaga province, 14.6% more than in the same period of 2021 (3,010). This increase is more marked in Malaga than at the Andalusian level (11.1%). And the figure even surpasses the number of deaths during the worst period of the pandemic – the second quarter of 2020 when there were 3,148 fatalities.
– The data published on Friday 13 January by the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalucía (IECA) do not include the reasons for death but the increase in mortality has centred on the older age groups. Of the 3,451 deaths registered in the first quarter of 2022 in Malaga province, 2,984 were over 65 years of age. The increase in deaths in this age group compared to the same period last year was almost 21%. In contrast, fewer people under 65 died, both in comparison with the spring of 2021 (-14%) and 2020 (-36%). Food prices in Malaga province have risen more than at any time in the last 20 years:
– Inflation across Malaga province has rocketed in the last year by 12.93%, while the national average stands at 12.63%, as shown in the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) published this Friday, 13 January, by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). This equates to the largest increase in prices of food and drink in two decades.
– Data for the month of December from the CPI show a huge jump in food costs of 17.7%, well above the national average of 15.9%.

More Spanish gov’t statistics disputed by international analysts- IES says Spain has a real tax burden much higher than the European average: {Translation, 1st two paragraphs only}
– The Spanish government has had the audacity to call a report by the Institute of Economic Studies (IES) and the Tax Foundation that shows that Spain is one of the countries with the most aggressive taxation against the productive sector a “hoax”. As usual, they are not telling the truth. According to the report, Spain will be in 34th position in 2022 out of the 38 countries analyzed and is one of the five countries with the worst tax competitiveness in the OECD. The tax effort, the tax burden normalized according to income, is already 53% higher than the European Union average.
– Likewise, the normative tax burden indicator (the tax burden that the system introduces regardless of the revenue obtained) is 16.4% higher than the EU average. This excess taxation is especially reflected in the corporate income tax, among the five worst in the OECD, and in the tax burden on wealth, which is the second worst in the OECD after Italy.
