Donations From 4,521 Subscribers = 85 (€2285)

2021 = 80 donors / €2400 (Naythan was paid €1.28/hr for editing 6hrs/day)
2022 Goal = €3745 (Naythan gets €2/hr for editing 6hrs/day)

Fundraiser Update: Just 4 days remaining in the fundraiser.
– To those yet to donate, please help me reach the goal so I can receive €2 per hour for the work I do everyday providing what many consider to be a valuable community asset!
– Thank you to those of you who donated.
– Issues take 6+ hours a day to assemble, 6 days per week.
– Last year’s donations totaled €2400, providing me €46/wk for 36-hour weeks, or €1.28 per hour.
– I am now aiming for the princely sum of €2 per hour, requiring total donations of €3745, the current goal. With hundreds more subscribers than last year, this should be attainable. If the new goal is not reached by January 7th, it’s not the end of the world, but some changes will need to be made. In that case, DigameXtra MAY change to a 5-days-a-week publication schedule, Monday thru Friday only, in mid January. There may also be some minor rules changes to lighten my editing workload. It all depends on the donations received in the next 4 days. It all depends on YOU!

Please Donate Today!

Only FOUR Days Remain in the Holiday Season Fundraiser. If the goal is reached, I will refrain from fundraising until mid-November. If the goal is not reached, there will be another fundraiser this summer.

VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA

Fourteen floats and 800 people will make up the procession of the spectacular Three Kings parade in Vélez: {Translation, summary}
– The traditional Three Wise Men parade will take place on Thursday 5th January, at 17.30 hours, leaving from the Plaza de La India. This year, after two editions of an original ‘static parade’ due to the pandemic, the traditional parade format returns with fourteen floats, some 800 participants, more than 6,000 sweets, musical performances and many surprises for the enjoyment of children, young and old
– In addition to the parade, on 5 January there will be various activities featuring the Three Wise Men who will arrive in the city at the Ermita del Cerro at 10.30 a.m., where they will greet anyone who wishes to come and meet them. Afterwards, they will visit the Plaza de Las Carmelitas and then visit the users of the Anne Axarquía and Asprovélez Associations, the elderly of the Seniors Residence and the children of the Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquía.
– In the afternoon, Their Majesties the Three Wise Men will depart on foot from the Palace of the Marqués de Beniel at 17.15 hours, and will move to occupy their floats, located at the Plaza de La Constitución, to join the rest of the procession and begin the official route at 17.30 hours from the Plaza de La India. Before the end of the parade, at around 21.00 hours, the Three Wise Men will perform the adoration of the Baby Jesus in the traditional Living Nativity Scene of the CEIP San José located in the Plaza de Las Carmelitas.
– The parade will pass along Calle Reñidero to the Plaza de Reyes Católicos, from there to Calle Canalejas, Plaza de Las Carmelitas and Calle Cristo, continuing along Avenida Vivar Téllez, Calle Molino de Velasco, Camino Viejo de Málaga, Calle Cervantes and Calle Cristo, to finish in the Plaza de Las Carmelitas. Lagos will hold its VII Migas Solidarias on January 8th:
{Translation, summary}
– The event will take place next Sunday, 8th January, in the Tanit car park next to the Lagos river and will feature performances by Encanto de Loco – a cover band of El Canto del Loco – and the flamenco fusion of Bumburay and Son del Puerto.
– The day, organised in collaboration between the Mayor’s Office and the Bahía de Lagos Association, “will begin at 12 noon and we will have a varied programme to accompany this day of neighbourhood coexistence and gastronomy with the best music. First of all, the group Bumburay will accompany us while the migas are being prepared. Then, from 3 p.m. onwards, the flamenco-pop group Son del Puerto will follow. And finally, we will spend the afternoon and evening with the best pop-rock versions of Encanto de Loco”, García explained.
– The focus in the gastronomic section will be migas, one of the most typical winter dishes in our region. In addition, they will be accompanied by a glass of local wine: “The distribution will begin at 14:30 and the price for those attending will be to bring a kilo of non-perishable food, or hygiene or baby products, which will be exchanged for a plate of migas accompanied by a glass of local wine. The food will be donated to soup kitchens,” he said. Source, Spanish:

GRANADA

Five days of illegal rave in Granada – no precedent and no eviction foreseen: {Translation, summary}
– The massive New Year’s Eve celebration that has been organised illegally in the town of La Peza in Granada is taking longer than usual. So much so that five days after this illegal rave began on municipal land, the atmosphere continues “exactly the same”, according to the mayor of the municipality, Fernando Germán Álvarez Moles.
– “There are still practically the same people there as on the first day [30 December]”, explains the mayor, who estimates that on Tuesday, 3 January, approximately “1,000 or 1,500 people” are still concentrated in this area of the town, after the Guardia Civil agents carried out a check this morning in the vicinity. In this way, they have been able to verify that “there is no evolution” and the music “has even been turned up a little”, adds the councillor.
– With regard to a possible intervention on the site, Álvarez Moles reports that for security reasons, the local administration, the Benemérita and the Subdelegación del Gobierno have opted to “wait” for the attendees to vacate the site voluntarily, as “the remedy could be worse than the disease”, in the words of the mayor, judging by the number of people and dogs that still occupy the municipally-owned land located several kilometres from the centre. EUROPE

Drone advances in Ukraine could bring dawn of killer robots:
– Drone advances in Ukraine have accelerated a long-anticipated technology trend that could soon bring the world’s first fully autonomous fighting robots to the battlefield, inaugurating a new age of warfare.
– The longer the war lasts, the more likely it becomes that drones will be used to identify, select and attack targets without help from humans, according to military analysts, combatants and artificial intelligence (AI) researchers.
– That would mark a revolution in military technology as profound as the introduction of the machine gun. Ukraine already has semi-autonomous attack drones and counter-drone weapons endowed with AI. Russia also claims to possess AI weaponry, though the claims are unproven. But there are no confirmed instances of a nation putting into combat robots that have killed entirely on their own. Experts say it may be only a matter of time before either Russia or Ukraine, or both, deploy them. Photo: LIBKOS. HEALTH

From ‘Christmas retreats’ to gurus- Experts warn about the risks of “pseudotherapies”:
– Connecting with your inner child. Attributing your physical ailments to an emotional cause. Putting yourself in the hands of a guru or a guide. Eating at scheduled times and not talking to anyone for hours. All in a dream setting, far from the mundane racket, away from other people and family. Experts from the Salud sin Bulos (Health without Hoaxes) institute, in Spain, warn about the risks of blindly trusting the tantalizing messages of these kinds of retreats, which experience a boom around these dates. According to Salud sin Bulos (an extensive network of collaborators that includes doctors, psychologists, pharmacists and even experts in sects), these organizations “employ methods to recruit vulnerable people and profit from their suffering.” These are practices with no scientific evidence – referred to as pseudotherapies – which in this time of uncertainty, crisis, pandemic and war have found fertile ground.
– Not that trying to reconnect with yourself, even if it is your inner child, is negative. Neither are, in essence, some practices such as meditation, reiki or family constellations. However, they do pose some risks that should be taken into account, explains Carlos Sanz, a psychologist who collaborated in the “Christmas without pseudotherapies” report. “Everyone’s spirituality is valid. But they take advantage of legitimate things and make abstract promises. There are people who go to a retreat to meditate and learn more about themselves, but they find other elements mixed in there, like the control of carbohydrates and sleep, long hours of meditation […] those who participate are being controlled.” Full article: https://english.elpais.com/science-tech/2023-01-03/experts-warn-about-the-risks-of-pseudotherapies-connecting-with-the-inner-child-and-christmas-retreats.html

SPACE

Quadrantid meteor shower peaks this morning just before dawn, but dimmed by bright moon this year:
– The meteor shower is known for lighting up the sky with bright fireball meteors – but only if you can catch them during their few hours of peak awesomeness, which will happen on the night of January 3-4, 2023, between midnight and dawn. The Moon will be nearly full, so the best viewing will be in the very early morning hours, in the dark hour just before dawn. Although technically the Quadrantids last from late December to mid-January, the real show lasts just a few hours.
– The Quadrantids are mostly a Northern Hemisphere meteor shower, although if you’re north of 51° South you might be able to catch a glimpse. They should be visible across the whole night sky, but they’ll seem to radiate from a point near Polaris, the North Star (look for the end of the Big Dipper’s handle).
