Legendary rock guitarist Jeff Beck dies aged 78:
– Jeff Beck, the celebrated guitarist who played with the Yardbirds and led the Jeff Beck Group, has died aged 78, his representative has confirmed.– Beck died on Tuesday after “suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis”, the representative confirmed. “His family ask for privacy while they process this tremendous loss,” they added.
– Often described as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, Beck – whose fingers and thumbs were famously insured for £7m – was known as a keen innovator. He pioneered jazz-rock, experimented with fuzz and distortion effects and paved the way for heavier subgenres such as psych rock and heavy metal over the course of his career. He was an eight-time Grammy winner, recipient of the Ivor Novello for outstanding contribution to British music and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame both as a solo artist and as a member of the Yardbirds.

SPAIN
DGT ‘ECO’ sticker label information:
– From January 1, all cities in Spain with more than 50,000 inhabitants must set up low-emission zones. These zones will in the future only be able to be accessed with an environmental label (officially known as a ZBE label) issued by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).
– To date, the DGT was the only body with the authourity to issue these badges. To prevent overload due to requests for low emission zone (ZBE) stickers, several methods and locations have been made available for acquiring them.
– The first of these places is the local Post Office where it is only necessary to present the circulation permit and the DNI of the owner of the vehicle. After paying 5 euros for the sticker, it should be placed in the lower right corner of the interior on the front window.
– They can be bought at the same price through the Spanish Confederation of Workshops, authorised garages, administrative managers, and the Institute of Automotive Studies.
Explainer: What are the four ZBE labels?
– There are four labels with which the DGT identifies each vehicle based on the type of engine, as well as its age: See details in source article.
– The DGT also specifies exactly where it should be placed: just in the lower right corner of the front windshield, inside the glass. If it is not placed there, you run the risk of earning a fine. This sanction comes because the label can hinder the driver’s vision and this is penalised with a €200 fine. For motorcycles, the label must be placed in any visible place.
– If you are going to travel to another European country with your vehicle, you should find out about the regulations in place for that country, because you may need to place a special label. Within Spanish territory, you can purchase, for €5, the environmental badge corresponding to your vehicle at Post Offices, at the Network of Workshops of the Spanish Confederation of Workshops (CETRAA), and at the Institute of Environmental Studies. Spain approves new €600 per month unemployment benefit for artists:
– The new benefit has been created for artists and those who work in cultural fields such as actors, as well as workers in technical and auxiliary activities who have signed up to become self-employed. and will be available from July 1st 2023.
– Professionals in these fields who lose their work will now be able to apply for an unemployment benefit of up to €600 per month, if they prove they have contributed to the social security system for at least 60 days in the last 18 months or have worked at least six months in the last six years in the cultural sector.
– People in these sectors will be able to collect the benefit for four months and it will also be compatible with receiving royalties from intellectual property and image rights.
– Those who have paid the social security contributions exceeding the threshold of €61 will be eligible to receive the full €600, while those who have paid less will receive €480.
– Artists and cultural workers who apply for this unemployment, will not be able to receive other unemployment benefits at the same time.
– The new decree also includes a reduced threshold for low-income artists, a group that will include all those who are self-employed or autónomos and earn €3,000 per year or less.
At the start of this year, a new contribution base of €526.14 is set for this group, which represents a monthly fee of €161. In addition, to try and help the system adapt to the irregularity of many of the activities in the cultural sector, these payments may be quarterly, instead of monthly.
– As well as the benefit, the decree will allow artists and those who work in the cultural sector to receive a pension. Up until now, they could only do this if they undertook activities that generated intellectual property rights.
– The beneficiaries of this non-contributory pension will also be able to earn income from artistic activities, provided that they do not exceed the threshold of the minimum wage.
– Pensions for these artists will come into force from April 1st 2023. Source: https://www.thelocal.es/20230110/spanish-government-approves-a-new-unemployment-benefit-for-artists/

A Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear adviser says plan for 7 nuclear waste warehouses places Spain among worst countries in nuke management: {Translation, summary}
– The Nuclear Safety Council advisor Javier Díes has warned the plenary of the regulator that going from the current proposal (ATC) to build a centralized temporary storage facility for nuclear waste in Villar de Cañas (Cuenca) to seven decentralized temporary storage facilities will place Spain among the countries that “have failed” in the development of an “excellent” management of high level radioactive waste.
– This is what the counselor states in his dissenting vote against the decision of the plenary of the CSN, which on December 21 gave the Government a favorable report on the 7th Radioactive Waste Plan, which opts for the option of having seven temporary storage facilities (ATD) at the nuclear power plant sites themselves until the construction of the deep geological repository (final repository), which will be operational around 2070.
– For Díes, with the VII General Radioactive Waste Plan reported favorably, Spain will go down to having a safety level of around 5 out of 10 compared to the previous option which was “outstanding”. Thus, he insists that the ATC option was a “solid” strategy and that it allowed Spain to have the highest safety level. – According to the report, the couple advertised their services via the internet offering a “healing house” geared towards “self-development groups, shamanic retreats and addiction recovery and detoxification.”

ANDALUCIA
Indefinite Strike of Primary Care Physicians- Declares January 20 start: {Translation}
– Three trade union organizations are calling for separate mobilizations, but all with the same aim: to protest against the situation in the health centers. The recently created Sindicato Médico de Primaria (SMP) has announced an indefinite strike for family doctors and pediatricians in both outpatient clinics and their emergency departments, starting at 00:00 on January 20. For its part, the Andalusian Medical Union (SMA) is staging a rally this Thursday in front of the headquarters of the Board in Seville to demand, among other things, a maximum of 35 patients per day for general practitioners and 25 for pediatricians, while threatening a strike at that level of care for the 27th of this month. Completing the calendar of mobilizations is the protest called by CCOO also for this Thursday, in this case, at 11:00 in front of the Malaga Health District, in Seville Street, in the capital of Malaga.
– The Primary Medical Union (SMP) is calling for an indefinite strike on January 20 to ensure that the remuneration of professionals is in line with the knowledge, responsibility and hardship required of them. According to this organization, the physicians are “fed up” with the fact that working conditions are damaging their health and that after four years they continue “with practically the same salary”. The SMP denounces that the value of the hourly rate for on-call duty has risen “barely” and, although they are paid more for working more hours, the commitment made was “justice and equalization with other professions and positions, with hospital colleagues, with other autonomous communities and countries, and reasonable working hours”. Schedules with an unlimited number of patients, where there is always room for more, inserted or in parallel schedules, and with a “miserable” time for each patient “are not conditions for practicing medicine”, according to this organization.
– For its part, the Andalusian Medical Union (SMA) calls this Thursday (12Jan23) at 11:30 to protest in front of the Palace of San Telmo. Increased funding for primary care, equalization of salaries of professionals with other communities, “essential” adequacy of the templates to the population and a ceiling of 35 patients per day for physicians and 25 for pediatricians are their main demands. The SMA warns, “Without options of “bises” [patients cited at the same time] or parallel agendas”, and also demands that what exceeds 35 users should be transferred to the afternoon as continuity of care, which should be paid outside the regular working day. The SMA, which is threatening a strike on 27 January, asks the SAS for “more stability” and better working conditions and pay “to avoid the flight of doctors. For this organization, it is necessary to “change the current course of Primary Care and force the health administrations to commit to it and adopt urgent measures for its salvation and improvement”.
– In turn, CCOO gave a press conference on Wednesday in which it denounced up to 15 days of delay in some health centers for an appointment with the family doctor and professionals who come to have quotas of 2,000 users, when the recommendation of scientific societies is a maximum of 1,200. Therefore, this Thursday, has called a rally at the headquarters of the Malaga Health District, in Seville Street, at 11:00. The ship ‘Nao Victoria’ extends its stay in Malaga: {Translation}
– The historic ship Nao Victoria, which has been docked in the port of Malaga during the Christmas holidays, extends its stay at Pier 2 in the capital until January 29.
– Thus, it can continue to be visited by the public and by school groups, as they have indicated in a statement. The Nao Victoria is the replica of the ship that five centuries ago, captained by Magellan and Elcano, starred in the greatest maritime adventure of all time. A ship that sails today as ambassador of the V Centenary of the First Voyage around the World (2019-2022).
– The ship is an “authentic masterpiece” of the country’s riverside carpentry, with meticulous historical rigor in which the details of the original have been respected. Since its construction in 1991, it has already made immense voyages all over the planet.
– During their stay in Malaga, the public will be able to board the ship, tour its decks and learn about the amazing adventure that its sailors carried out 500 years ago, facing an immense journey of more than three years full of dangers and difficulties, until they managed to circumnavigate the planet through its great oceans. Visitors will also be able to go down to its cellar, and learn about the experiences of the young crew that today continues to navigate seas around the world.
– Lastly, they recalled that so that visitors can tour its decks in complete safety during the Nao Victoria’s stay in the city, all pertinent capacity measures will be adopted (bring masks). Therefore, it is recommended to get the ticket online or pay by card. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/Nao-Victoria-Malaga_0_1756026297.html

Demolition Delay- Supreme Court tells Greenpeace “Algarrobico license is fully legal 20 years later”: {Translation, summary}
– The Supreme Court (TS) has concluded that the “complexity” surrounding the Azata del Sol hotel in the area of ??El Algarrobico, in Carboneras (Almería), prevents ordering its demolition through the courts, since the municipal works license granted in 2003 “it continues to be fully legal almost 20 years later” despite the environmental regulations that govern the Cabo de Gata-Níjar natural park and the Coastal Law.
– It also considers that there is an “inadmissible leniency of all the administrations involved” in reference to the City Council of Carboneras, Junta de Andalucía and the State and that this “has led to actions lacking all reason and all logic” regarding the construction of the hotel.
– The sentence states that the court “is aware” of the “extremely special situation” that continues to be maintained with its decision “on land whose adequate protection is imposed” by the environmental regulations that govern the natural park and by the Coastal Law, but it alleges that “procedural guarantees cannot yield to the alleged effectiveness of a demolition for which the Greenpeace association vehemently calls.” Source, Spanish: https://andaluciainformacion.es/andalucia/1166746/la-licencia-del-algarrobico-es-plenamente-legal-20-anos-despues-segun-el-supremo/
MARBELLA
Potentially dangerous species of cat captured in Marbella garden:
– There were a number of reports of a lynx sighting, but it turned out to be a caracat that had disappeared on 1 January from its owner’s house in Nueva Andalucía.
– The owners of the house where the cat appeared called the authorities believing that they had spotted a lynx in their garden. However, it turned out to be a caracat, which is included in the catalogue of potentially dangerous domestic animals, according to a statement from Marbella town hall.
– Jakar, weighing around 20 kilos, was first sighted the day it escaped, in Las Chapas, Marbella, about 20 kilometres away from its home. The caracat was taken to the El Paraíso animal shelter in Alhaurín de la Torre, where vets checked that it was in good health, while waiting for its owner to present all the relevant documentation in order to be able to take their pet home.
