Hospital in Madrid confirms the first case of the “Kraken” Covid variant: {Translation, summary}
– The Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Service of the Hospital Gregorio Marañón of the Community of Madrid has detected this Monday the first case sequenced in the region (it would be the fifth in Spain) of the XBB1.5 variant of the Covid, sublineage of omicron and better known as Kraken.
– The World Health Organization (WHO) already warned a few days ago that the XBB.1.5 variant is the most contagious of all those detected to date, and expressed its “concern” about its rapid spread.
– The Kraken subvariant, of North American origin, is prevelent in the United States – it accounts for more than 40% of cases. The wave of infections is generating a high number of hospitalizations among people over 70 years of age and sewage data shows that the US is currently mired in the second worst wave of infections of the entire pandemic. SPAIN

EU Provided Unemployment Stats for Spain Contradict Spain’s Claims of Jobs Progress- Spain once again has most unemployment & youth unemployment in the European Union: {Translation, summary}
– Unemployment remained at 6.5% in November in the Eurozone, repeating the historic low recorded in the previous month, according to provisional data published Monday by Eurostat. The repetition of the average levels of unemployment in both the Eurozone and the EU is evidence of the stagnation in employment that international organizations such as the European Commission had already been predicting.
– Spain once again led unemployment in the European Union, being the community partner with the highest unemployment rate, despite the decrease of one tenth compared to October and of one point compared to the same period of the previous year. The Spanish figure of 12.4% is almost double the average for the Eurozone countries.
– Spain is, together with Greece, the only one of the community partners that exceeds the 10% unemployment barrier. In the case of Greece, the figure stood at 11.4% in November, with 528,000 unemployed, also one tenth less than in the previous month and 1.7 points below the rate recorded a year ago. It is followed by Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Sweden and France, with rates of 7.8%, 7.5%, 7.2% and 7% respectively.
– In contrast, the Member States with the lowest percentages of unemployed population in November were Malta (3.2%), Germany (3%), Poland (3%) and the Czech Republic (2.7%).
– In absolute terms, Spain, France, Italy and Germany accounted for 76.57% of the unemployed in the Eurozone in the eleventh month of 2022.
*Spanish youth unemployment over 32%*
– The average youth unemployment rate stood at 15.1% in November in both the Eurozone and the EU, with a total of 2.4 and 2.9 million people under the age of 25 out of work, respectively. Thus, in absolute terms, youth unemployment grew by 180,000 in the EU and by 157,000 in the eurozone, compared to the same period in 2021.
– Spain and Greece repeat as the European countries with the highest unemployment rates also among young people, reaching levels of 32.3% and 31.3% respectively. Still above the 20% barrier, they are followed by Italy and Sweden, with rates of 23% and 21.2%. In contrast, Germany, the Netherlands and Iceland have the lowest youth unemployment rates, below 8.5%. The Pot Calling the Kettle Black- Sanchez Accuses Ultras of  “Repulsive” Tactics: {Translation}
– The head of the Government, socialist Pedro Sánchez, expressed on Monday Spain’s full support for the Left-Wing Brazilian President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in the face of the events caused by “ultra movements” that he has described as “repulsive” and that he considers to be the greatest threatens democracy around the world.
– Sánchez began his speech at the opening of the VII Conference of Ambassadors referring to the situation caused in Brazil by thousands of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro who took over the country’s main institutions for several hours.
– The head of the Executive, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and accompanied by the head of this department, José Manuel Albares, conveyed the support of the Government and the entire Spanish society to the Brazilian president-elect and to the country’s democratic institutions.
– For Sánchez, the events in Brazil remind us that the greatest threat to democracy, peace and prosperity in the world is the resurgence of the ultra movement “willing to overwhelm with everything”. “We know the methods and they are repeated to the millimeter in each and every one of the countries that suffer them,” he then listed them. (Every one a tactic he himself uses!)
– First, the systematic use of lies to attract followers, then the resort to insults and verbal violence “to poison coexistence in society and exalt its followers” and, finally, an attack on institutions and legality.
– All this, he said, that was seen in the United States, now in Brazil and is verified daily in different latitudes. (And we have seen it here in Spain, from Sanchez, since before he was even elected.) 80 percent of Spanish consumers believe that sales are faked: {Translation}
– Eight out of ten consumers believe that the vast majority of businesses falsify discounts on part of the products they advertise as being on sale, according to a survey carried out by the consumer organization Facua.
– 83.6% consider that fraud through the advertising of discounts that are not real is committed by the vast majority of establishments during the sales season, 9.1% believe that half of the businesses commit it, 5 .5% understand that very few do it and only 1.8% think that no business does it.
– According to Facua, there are four ways to commit these irregularities, the first is to advertise a product that is sold at exactly the same price as before the start of the sales as discounted, the second is to apply price increases in the previous days and then display the discounts. The third is to announce on the labels or the signage placed next to the articles discount percentages that are much higher than the real ones, and lastly, to advertise as discounted products that had not really been available for sale before.
– In the Facua survey, carried out through the social network Twitter on January 7 and 8, 2,350 users have participated.
– Along with false discounts, the consumer organization has warned of irregularities such as refusing to assume responsibility when there are manufacturing defects, announcing discounts of up to 70% that only apply to a few items, which disappear in the first few days, or extending the sales season up to two months when after several weeks there are hardly any discounted items left. These practices suppose a fraud to the consumers and a practice of unfair competition with the establishments that apply in all the cases real reductions, according to Facua.
– The association has regretted in a statement that the regional consumer authorities hardly carry out inspection actions before and during the course of the sales to impose economic sanctions and make public the names of the businesses that commit these irregularities. EUROPE

Civil service will be reintroduced in Sweden: {Translation, summary}
– The Government will instruct the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency to prepare the activation of civilian service.
– “We are returning to a situation where we have formalised civilian service,” says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
– The first step will be for people with rescue service skills to be deployed in a civilian capacity in municipal rescue services. MSB estimates that this group comprises around 3 000 people. “We do not know exactly how many may be subject to this duty. We see that the municipal civil protection service is not currently prepared for the requirements of a high state of readiness and, ultimately, an armed attack. Experience from Ukraine is clear – when it comes to protecting the civilian population, the civil protection services are put under very heavy pressure,” says Minister for Civil Defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin.
– The MSB has until 1 March to prepare the activation. Source, Swedish: https://www.svt.se/nyheter/inrikes/forsvarsministern-haller-presstraff

Netherlands declassifies Nazi World War II map of buried treasure near Arnhem: Every year, the National Archives of the Netherlands (NA) publishes thousands of documents that were either previously unseen by the public or available for study only under strict security measures. Among those released this January is a treasure map (pic) showing the suspected location of a trove of jewelry, watches and precious stones that were supposedly stolen by a group of German soldiers in 1944. Classified until now and drawn by hand, the map describes the region where the haul, which has never been located, was supposedly stashed. According to the sketch, the valuables were buried near Ommeren, in the eastern Netherlands, in a place that has been searched three times already by the authorities. People in Spain are facing longer waits to see a doctor:
– The start of the new year has seen a worsening situation in Spain’s public healthcare system, resulting in longer waiting times to get an appointment across all regions.
– The regions with the longest waiting times are Catalonia and Valencia, where the average time exceeds 10 days.
– This is followed by the Canary Islands, Andalusia and Madrid, where the average waiting time to get an appointment is more than 9 days.
– The average waiting time between when a person asks for an appointment and is finally seen by their family doctor has increased by 51.72 percent since 2019. “For a long time, the existence of waiting lists for Primary Care was denied. Now it is a fact,” explains the first vice president of the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine, Susana Aldecoa.

More than 200 million Twitter users’ email addresses leaked by hackers:
– Usernames and email addresses belonging to more than 200 million Twitter users have been posted online by hackers.
According to reports from security researchers and media outlets including BleepingComputer, the credentials were compiled from a number of earlier Twitter breaches dating back to 2021. Although the database does not include users’ passwords, it nevertheless represents a security threat to those affected.
– Screenshots of the database shared by BleepingComputer show it contains a number of text files listing email addresses and linked Twitter usernames, as well as users’ real names (if they shared them with the site), their follower counts, and account creation dates. BleepingComputer said it had “confirmed the validity of many of the email addresses listed in the leak” and that the database was being sold on one hacking forum for as little as $2.
