Urgent – Can you help Barney? 

This is Barney – a sweet, gentle giant of a boy, possibly with some St Bernard in him. He is 9 years old and was rescued from our local Malaga pound with only hours to go. Since then he has been waiting over a year for someone to fall in love with him (apart from his foster mum) … Barney is good with other dogs and cats, he is chipped, passported, castrated and has clear bloodwork. Services-Torrox Christmas Market   The preparations are on the way for this years Christmas market in Torrox Costa.To be held in the 2 banqueting suites of the Horto Malaga restaurant.Dates for this year are 5th to the 10th December. Officially opening at 7pm on the 5th then from the 6th to the 10th the hours will be 11am to 9.30pm. This year we have managed to organise disabled access to the upper floor.Stalls are 3 metres x 2metres 170€ downstairs and 160€ upstairs. What’s on Prostate Cancer UK charity walk- Mediterranean March for Men    We are organising a charity walk called the Mediterranean March for Men to provide the opportunity for expats living in Spain to increase awareness about prostate cancer and to provide the opportunity for people to support the charity from their current base/location. All across the UK the March for Men campaign is in full swing as September is prostate cancer awareness month. Although it is a UK based charity, this doesn’t mean we cannot support the charity from here. I believe a cause like this knows no boundaries or borders and Spain itself has no specific cancer charity like it. The Prostate Cancer UK charity provides a wealth of support to anyone who requests it, where-ever they are from, and I feel we, regardless of location, could all benefit short- and long-term from the work they do both from a scientific perspective as well as a personal supportive perspective. There is an enourmous amount of information available via their websitehttps://prostatecanceruk.org/.   From a personal perspective prostate cancer has been affecting my family for close to 15 years now. Being geographically far away from a beloved family member living with prostate cancer has been tough on everybody. Not being able to provide company for hospital appointments, not being there for good and/or bad news or even just giving a hug because cancer sucks, has spurred me on to organising this walk. Because I felt helpless and felt I should do something so helping raise awareness and money is a way of doing at least something!   So put on your boots and join me (Sanne the Physio) and Dr. Bernadette Veeger at Centro Mar y Salud, Paseo Maritimo 4, 29793 El Morche, at 10 am on 7th of October 2017.  There will be the opportunity to walk 3 km or 10 km.   We will be setting off from the clinic towards Lagos/Mezquitilla. The group walking 3km will turn around by the first picnic tables along the graveled coastal path, and the 10km group will turn around as they reach Mezquitilla and the end of the graveled coastal path. Refreshments will be available during the walk and at the return to base.  If you don’t wish to/can’t walk with us, then you can sponsor us or you can sponsor someone you know doing the walk. We have set up a Just Giving page where donations can be made, (it is online, safe and the money goes directly to the charity), or you can pop in to the clinic and pick up sponsorship forms, or leave a donation for us. Moulinex Cookeo  I wonder if there are any other Digamites who own a Moulinex Cookeo?  I think in the UK it may be called Cook 4 Me, and that it is also marketed under the Tefal label.   It is a combined pressure cooker, slow cooker and steamer with built in recipes to follow. I’ve had mine about six months and find it excellent but I would be interested in sharing tips and recipes with any other owners.  I have only scratched the surface of what it can do largely having to work it out for myself because the book provided is the Spanish version and when you change the language to English the recipes are different to the ones in the Spanish book. Its a bit of a learning curve all round but is great when you fathom it all out. Recommendation- for Steven Rowle Animal Behaviourist  by Amanda Gleeson Alhaurin de Torre,  I recently had reason to contact Steven Rowle regarding my dog, a rescued Pit-bull cross, called Cindy, who was showing aggressive behaviour towards my other dogs. I had read many enthusiastic recommendations about his work on Digame and on Facebook with great interest. I live in the Alhaurin del la Torre area, so regular trips to Caleta for me were not really feasible. That’s when Steven offered me the two week boarding option. He was extremely confident despite my scepticism, having never left any of my dogs with anyone before.  I was given a date to return which I duly did and was greeted by a very happy Cindy. Steven then explained to me all the fears he had discovered in Cindy and how they were leading to aggression and how he had helped her to overcome them. I have followed his instructions for my own behaviour around my dogs, and have had no aggressive issues since.Well done Steven!!! Rogue Ads appearing in Digamextra- Solution  Over the last few weeks adverts have been appearing on the page. The ads that appeared on the pages I viewed were personalised – relating to web searches I carried out or web pages I had visited e.g. Worten, Novasol and Soundcloud.  On my phone they soon became an intrusion as they are large ads that take time to load within such a small reading area. Realising the ads had not been added by Digamextra I added Adblockplus – a free app – no more ads on Digame.   Regards,Gary

Services Needed Mobile Phone Reception – Solution I read your request on DigameXtra. We too had a number of issues re: mobile phone reception.  We asked for assistance via Digamextra but unfortunately all of the responses received were of a temporary nature and did not suit our long-term needs.  However, we remain grateful that people responded at all and thankful for having a temporary service as opposed to none at all.  I took some time to investigate the best possible, long-term solution for us and, thankfully, found one. I hope the information below helps. 1. Before buying anything download a free signal booster app to your mobile.  I downloaded 3 apps just to check different services e.g. Network Signal Booster (RealAppsMaker)  2. Once downloaded give the app(s) time to respond and find a signal.  Before downloading the app(s) I could detect no signal at all to an intermittent one bar.  With the app(s) I could get 2 steady bars.  I continued to monitor this over a couple of days just to make sure that the signal would remain and wasn’t weather-affected. 3. With a steady signal.  I could then investigate appropriate signal repeaters. 4.The repeater that would best suit our needs is below and from Amazon.es         https://www.amazon.es/dp/B01B1CU75I/ref=pe_3310721_185740151_TE_item Cost: 69,96€ The item was based in Velez-Malaga and arrived to our post office at Torrox Pueblo within 24 hours.I would recommend this seller.  We attempted to purchase the repeater on 2 previous, separate occasions (ebay and Light in the Box – both cheaper) on both occasions they cancelled the order the day it was to be delivered.  They were ‘supposed’ to be coming from Germany and Netherlands but both were being dispatched from China – had I known I would not have ordered them. N.B.: this repeater may not suit everyone. 5. One we unpacked the repeater and antennae we then had to find were the best signal would be located. 6. We plugged in the repeater and tied the antennae to a tall ladder and walked about the terrace till the signal was strong and consistent.  7.  We then climbed the ladder and attached the antennae to the roof – a low roof – so quite east to do.  It could also have been fitted to the side of the house. 8.    We now have an excellent mobile reception.

Dog Mess: Competa After just coming back from a 2 week stay at our place in Competa in the town by the crematorium, I would like to say what a mess the roads were- covered in animal mess, attracting flies being there for many days. I have a pushchair and a new born baby and could not bring the pushchair into the house due to the state the wheels were in – even though I tried my best to avoid. We have the house now seven years and we have started the garden seven years ago as well. We have some basic understanding of gardening, but no experience in the South of Spain or Mediterranean . Since this year we live here permanently and we want to take it a bit more serious.   looking for an expert who is willing to give a practical (few?) training session on “ how to garden in the south of Spain”. Can be in Dutch or English.  For example, simple questions and topics like   how do you prune citrus trees and when? how do you deal with the sandy/ rocky ground and when do you fertilize and what,  Where do you get the fertilisation, what about watering, when, and how much? but also planting new plant and making compost in such dry circumstances etc.   So really practical things and knowledge to share, with the starting point of our own garden.  Of course we have internet and we can search and study, but we would also like to get some real life experience. New 41 Club Chairman has many new ideas  

Martin Urban from Astria has become the new Chairman of 41 Club Nerja (Ex Round Tablers).  We have already had a talk on walks around Frigiliana, an evening with a horse whisperer. a boat cruise around the bay at Calata and three Munch Bunches.  Our Club has 47 members from 10 different Counrties and is truly International.  Two new members have joined in the last two weeks.  We meet twice per month.  On the first Thursday we take our ladies out for our Munch Bunch where we visit different restaurants for a Menu del Dia.  On the third Thursday we have our ‘Normal’ meeting – whatever that is and have a speaker or an outing to visit someone such as the ‘Horse Whisperer’ who was excellent.  Martin has decided to involve the ladies at some of these meetings.  We have an annual meeting of all of the 41 Clubs on the Iberian Cluster in October and this year 18 couples are going to Calpe 41 Club for a three day event.A few weeks ago we twinned with Lichfield 41 Club and a gang of us visited them as well as the National Memorial Arboretum where Round Table and 41 Club have a memorial along with Ladies Circle and Tangent. Brexit & Pensions

Extract from an article I read today, in The Telegraph,  that suggests – “no deal is better than a bad deal” Brexit might not seem such a good idea for many expat oldies!

“British pensioners living in Europe face a drop in their incomes unless a post-Brexit deal on personal pensions is secured, MPs are warning. The problem is caused by insurance contracts – such as annuity payments – which may not be able to continue paying out to overseas customers after Britain leaves the EU, in March 2019. In a letter to Philip Hammond, the Chancellor, Treasury committee chair Nicky Morgan said unless a deal is struck insurers will lose the right to service these contracts. She said insurers were being put into a bind where they “must break the contract or the break the law”.

Currently British firms have “passporting rights” which allow them to offer cross-border insurance. These will end with Brexit, unless new arrangements are secured. Ms Morgan warned: “Citizens – including many UK expatriates – living in the rest of the European Economic Area in receipt of personal pensions may face difficulties getting paid”     Ian L

Recommendation- Films to Watch

If you are twiddling your thumbs here and casting a curious eye about you wondering about the Spain you find yourself in – then I recommend some must-see films that will at least keep you busy for a while.     The first is ‘Behold  a Pale Horse’ – great actors – Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, Omar Sharif  – American accents but a picture of the Spanish Civil War that will leave you moved I feel and probably depressed !   This can be seen or recorded if you have Sky Movies4men this Saturday at 6am UK time. The second is ‘Al Sur de Granada’ which you may be familiar with as it is based on Gerald Brenans book ‘South from Granada.  This is required viewing if you have any interest in the region , particularly Las Alpujarras.  What I like is that the Spanish speak Spanish, the English speak Spanish when they can, and there are subtitles in case !  Reality ! Tail Torrox is desperate to find the right home for Tony. 

He is a German Shepherd cross, castrated and  who has been in the refuge for over 2 years. He is between 3 and 4 years old. Highly intelligent and knows basic commands but has had some aggression issues ( due to being in the refuge). He is best suited to someone who is interested in doing some training with him. He is very active and walks well without a lead and good on recall. We would not recommend him to go to a family with young children and he would be best in a home as the sole dog or a female. A family with experience of dogs is also best. Trip to Gibraltar – Friday 6^th October  The Phoenix Club are off on their next shopping trip to Gibraltar on Friday the 6^th October. We have pick ups at at the A1 Garden Centre, Torre del Mar bus station and finally at Algarrobo Lidl at 08.30.  The bus is parked in Morrisons car park and we leave Gibraltar at 16.30.  Due to visa restrictions on entering Gibraltar, please advise if you are a non EU citizen when you book.  Also it is important to remember to bring with you your EHIC card, just in case, and passports are essential.  On the way to Gibraltar we stop to spend a penny and for coffee. We would greatly appreciate if payment was made before the journey.  The price?  €12pp includes a €1 gratuity for the driver.  Children under 12 can join us for 1/2 price.   Still the best value on the coast!
Early booking is recommended if you like a particular place, as seat numbers are allocated on a first come, first served basis.  Plenty to see in Gibraltar apart from the shopping!  Also taking bookings for our Christmas shopping trip to Gib on the 1^st December   Trip to the Alpujarras – Friday 20^th OctoberWe are off on a jolly to the Alpujarras visiting Trevelez and Pampaneira on Friday 20^th October. We will have a stop for breakfast along the way and then our next port of call will be the Jamon and Queso factory in Trevelez.  Lunch in Trevelez and then re-wind to Pampaneira where you can visit the smallest chocolate factory in the world, pop in and visit the 30 year old famous fabric weaving workshop of Mercedes Carrascosa , see her looms and the beautiful fabrics, clothing and tapestries she produces.
