– The plants are located in the following municipalities: Alameda, Alcaucín, Frigiliana, Cuevas de San Marcos, Sayalonga, Sedella, Archidona, Comares, Totalán, Villanueva del Trabuco, Cañete la Real, Cútar, Colmenar, Casabermeja, Villanueva de Tapia, El Burgo, Ardales, Teba, Serrato, Cuevas del Becerro, Parauta, Gaucín and Montecorto. NERJA

The alleged perpetrator of numerous burglaries of rural houses in Nerja arrested: {Translation}
– Alarm has been caused among neighbours in the area of the River de la Miel, located to the east of the municipality of Nerja, by a series of burglaries on rural properties. A dozen houses have been broken into while their owners were away. The Guardia Civil has arrested a suspected perpetrator of the robberies.
– The burglaries began in December and continued into January. The suspect appeared to use the same ‘modus operandis’, first checking for the absence of people in the homes before gaining access to them in the early hours of the morning, forcing locks and climbing fences.
– The owners, uneasy, reported the facts on social networks and to the Guardia Civil. The investigation was taken over by the agents of the Armed Institute of the Axarquia municipality and resulted in the arrest of a 40 year old neighbour with a criminal record for similar acts in other rural dwellings in Nerja and Frigiliana. During a search of his rural home, the police found objects reported stolen. The rest was allegedly sold on the black market. The value of the looted items, including agricultural machinery and technology, as well as cash, is estimated at 15,000 euros, including the damage caused to the properties. EUROPE

The European Commission in Brussels detects that about 40 percent of online stores use manipulative sales practices: {Translation, summary}
– Nearly 40 percent of online retail shops use manipulative practices to push consumers into making purchasing decisions, a report by the European Commission and consumer protection authorities in 23 member states said on Monday.
In total, the analysis covered 399 online shops in a range of sectors, from clothing to electronics, of which 148 used some form of practice to influence customer behaviour to make decisions that may not always be in their best interests, known as ‘dark patterns’.
– In this regard, 42 sites used a fake countdown with a deadline time to make a purchase of specific products, while another 54 shops directed consumers to certain choices, such as subscriptions or more expensive products, through their web design. The report found that 70 other sites hid or withheld information relevant to customers, such as shipping costs, product composition or the possibility of a cheaper price. Another 23 hid information with the aim of getting consumers to subscribe to some kind of service.
– “This behaviour is clearly wrong and contrary to consumer protection. Today we already have binding tools to help tackle these problems and I call on the national authorities to use their enforcement powers to take appropriate action to combat these practices,” said Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders on the report. He said Brussels is reviewing all consumer protection legislation to make sure it is fit for the digital age, “including to assess whether dark patterns are adequately covered”. Dutch PM- Schengen May Not Survive If Dublin Regulations Are Not Renewed:
– The Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, has said that Schengen will not survive if the Dublin regulations are not renewed. His comments came following the current migration situation while demanding the renewal of the registration of migrants at the EU’s external borders, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
– Rutte’s comments came after a conversation with the Chancellor of Austria, Karl Nehammer while stressing that the Dublin system permits migrants to be returned to the first country of entry into the European Union. The Prime Minister of the Netherlands called on the European Union to help protect the EU’s external borders by helping Bulgaria with border security. In addition, he stressed that the border controls currently in place between Germany, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary as well as Slovenia show that Schengen is failing. SPORTS

Football News- Real Madrid vs FC Barcelona and Osasuna vs Athletic, these are the Copa del Rey semifinals: {Translation, summary}
– The draw held on Monday at the Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas (Madrid) has decided that the semi-finals of the 2022-2023 edition of the Copa del Rey will be between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona and between CA Osasuna and Athletic Club.
– Thus, there will be a Clasico between Madrid and FC Barcelona, very important for both teams as one of the two will be left without the chance to win another title this season, while a door opens for the ‘rojillos’ and the ‘lions’ to reach a cup final in an always attractive match of northern rivalry.
– The format of this penultimate round of the ‘k.o’ competition is a two-legged affair, with the Santiago Bernabéu and El Sadar hosting the first legs, and the Spotify Camp Nou and San Mamés the second legs. Due to Real Madrid’s participation in the Club World Cup, the first matches will not be played as scheduled next week but will be played on 28 February, 1 or 2 March, when the second legs were scheduled, which will now be moved to April on 4, 5 or 6. The final will be on 6 May at the Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville. TECH

Top French University Bans ChatGPT Use to Prevent Plagiarism Amongst Students:
– Universities around Europe, in addition to those in the United States, have started banning ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot that can create quite coherent writing content based on the users’ demand. The latest university to ban the use of ChatGPT has been the French university of Science Po, which cited fraud and plagiarism as the main reasons for taking this measure.
– However, the university hasn’t specified how it would track usage of the tool, but several universities, especially those in the United States have intentions to assign more hand-written essays and oral exams instead of take-home assessments. Several public schools in New York City and Seattle have introduced a ban on this tool for all their students, while Sciences Po, whose main campus is in Paris, pointed out there will be a punishment for using the software, such as expelling from the university or even from French higher education entirely. Recommendation for DoctorLaptop:
I have to give a big shout to Naythan who works very hard to get us our daily digamextra. But an extra thank you for sorting out my laptop. The hard drive went and Naythan managed to retrieve important files, install another hard drive in my laptop, replace the saved data into the new hard drive, and have it working again in the same day. Very competent, professional and what he charged was worth every euro. I highly recommend you to use this service. And let’s hope that when the next donation campaign is on we all dig a little deeper in our pockets to get him a fair wage. Thank you Naythan. COVID

Lab leak WAS the ‘most likely’ cause of Covid-19, UN experts claim as they accuse top British and American scientists of helping China to suppress debate on the issue:
– The authors of two United Nations reports into the origins of the pandemic say they believe a laboratory leak was the most likely cause of Covid-19, accusing top British and American scientists of helping China deliberately to suppress debate on the issue. The distinguished professors hit out at the ‘cover-up’ in a damning joint article for The Mail on Sunday that calls for ‘re-evaluation of the likely pathways that caused this pandemic’.
– They say ‘a pall of suspicious secrecy, deceit and conflicts of interest’ shrouded high-risk experiments being carried out in Wuhan, the Chinese city where Covid first appeared, and argue that it was ‘enforced not only by China but by Western funding bodies and influential Western scientists’. The dramatic intervention comes from epidemiologists Colin Butler (based at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health in Canberra, Australia) and Delia Randolph (of the University of Greenwich, London). ANDALUCIA

The poorest neighborhoods in Spain are in Seville and Alicante: {Translation, summary}
– Alicante and Seville are the cities where the poorest neighborhoods in Spain are located, while their provinces contain a good number of the lowest-income towns in the country.
– This is indicated by data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which indicates how the lowest incomes in Spain, differentiated by neighborhoods, were located in the Seville neighborhoods of Polígono Sur, Los Pajaritos {pic} and Amate, and in the Juan XXIII neighborhood of Alicante. In addition, other areas of Seville or Alicante appear on the list of the ten next poorest neighborhoods in the country.
– Along with this, in the list of the 20 municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants with the lowest income per inhabitant recently published by the INE for the year 2019, there are towns in Seville such as Los Palacios – Villafranca or Lebrija, and Alicante such as Torrevieja or Crevillente. MALAGA

Almáchar and Comares will host the “Sewing Seniors” workshops of the Provincial Council: {Translation, summary}
– The Provincial Council of Malaga will hold a new edition of the fashion workshops ‘Mayores de la costura’, for elderly people in the province, which will be held in the Axarquia municipalities of Almáchar and Comares, as well as in other municipalities in the province of Malaga such as Igualeja, Manilva and Villanueva del Trabuco during the months of February, March and April. Both the workshops and the fabrics and materials are free of charge, and the workshops will conclude with a parade of the designs produced. It was stressed the importance of maintaining the popular and cultural traditions of the province through the production of typical dresses of each region such as flamenco, malagueña, verdiales, rondeña and antequerana costumes.

TORROX

Torrox is the only municipality on the Costa del Sol that increases its population by more than 5%: {Translation, summary}
– The census data made public by the National Statistics Institute (INE) as of 1 January 2021 leaves Torrox as the only town on the Costa del Sol with a growth in the last year of over 5%. Specifically, the municipality has gone from 18,937 inhabitants on 1 January 2021 to 19,997 in 2022.
– Torrox is followed by Casares (4.6%) and Benalmádena (4%). Only Estepona and Mijas are above 3%, while Nerja and Manilva grew by 2%. The rest are around 1% growth, with the exception of Málaga city and Fuengirola, which are below this percentage.
– “The fact that one out of every four Torroxeños registered in Torrox today have done so in the last 8 years is an unequivocal example of the leap in quality that our municipality has made in all aspects since 2015, as is the fact that it is the fastest growing town by far compared to other municipalities on the Costa del Sol. This is something we should all be proud of and confirms that we are on the right track,” said the municipal authority. Source & Photo credit, Spanish:

TECH

Artificial Intelligence “ChatGPT” (an advanced AI chatbot) found to be capable of passing MBA and Medical Licensing Exams:
– The AI chatbot can hold conversational text interactions with users by employing artificial intelligence. It can generate responses to questions (a feature that could eventually challenge search engines), generate text for prose, write code, make calculations, translate information, and more.
– The academic community is growing increasingly concerned about students using ChatGPT for less than honest purposes as it has been found to be capable of not only writing essays for high school students, but passing some exams, such as parts of those used to license doctors and grant MBAs.
– In two new papers posted on preprint servers, one team and another researcher independently tested the ability of ChatGPT to take and pass exams. In the first a team with members from AnsibleHealth, Inc., Brown University and OpenAI, Inc. describe testing they did to see how well ChatGPT could do on the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and posted their results on the medRXiv preprint server.
– In the second, Christian Terwiesch, the Andrew M. Heller Professor at Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, has posted a paper on Wharton’s preprint site, describing how he tested the chatbot’s ability to perform on the final exam of a typical Operations Management MBA core course and what he found.
– In the first paper, the researchers tested the chatbot on all three parts of the USMLE, which medical school graduates must pass to become doctors. They found it performed well enough to pass or nearly pass all of the required thresholds for licensure. They also noted that it was capable of creating written passages that were highly consistent and showed the type of insight a person would need to become a successful doctor.
– In the second paper, Terwiesch used OpenAI’s GPT-3 (the base model for ChatGPT) to take the final exam for an Operations Management course. He then graded it as he would any regular student. He found that he would have given the paper a B, or at worst a B-, more than enough to pass. He further notes that in addition to giving correct answers, the chatbot was able to provide good explanations for its answers.
{Sooner than you think, many of your previous human consultations, with doctors, lawyers, bankers, etc., will be done with AI chatbots. This may be an improvement in some ways,  AI will have instant access to far more knowledge than any human. What AI does not have is any degree of compassion, sympathy, spirituality or shared human experience. Clearly there are advantages and disadvantages.
– Most written content as well as artwork, web design, and even music will be AI created. AI is far more efficient and cost effective than human labor, so this trend seems inevitable.
– Rogue AI chatbots will be used for criminal activities, to produce ever more effective scams. It will be used to create nearly undetectable forgeries and frauds. It will design smarter computer viruses. We already see a flood of “deep fake” photos and videos on social media, made with AI tools. Strange days indeed! -Ed.}

MOONETTE – Organic Skincare for Mature Skin

We are a Torrox-based company specialising in the creation of formulae which help prevent premature skin ageing. We are committed to making effective products at affordable prices.
Your skin health matters to us. How you feed your skin is as important as how you feed your body. Why settle for anything less than natural and organic?
As our skin is the first layer of our defence against microbial infections, ultraviolet radiation and environmental contamination it plays a vital role in our health. As we grow older, however, our skin becomes thinner, wrinkled, and more sensitive; hence it requires the use of treatments containing specific ingredients to the care of treating mature skin.
Recognising this need we have created a range of formulae which help
-slow down ageing process by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.
-improve facial complexion and eliminate blemishes.
At Moonette, we are passionate about health, beauty and plants. Your skin will benefit from the properties of botanic essential oils combined with a selection of nutrients for deep hydration, cell revitalization and antioxidant effect, all sourced from the finest natural ingredients with gorgeous fragrances.
Naturally, we care about our planet and feel the need to help reduce the sheer volumes of plastics waste that are generated daily around the globe. Presently, we are minimizing the usage of plastic materials in our production while seeking alternative forms of packaging. To help reduce pollution we are asking all local customers to recycle or reuse their Moonette skincare containers, and offering a small discount on future purchases to customers recycling containers.

This is followed by its neighbour Galicia where levels are currently at 88.6 percent. In third place is the Basque Country where reservoirs have reached 68.05 percent capacity.

– The company’s representative, Álvaro Morales, stated that the renovation work has taken longer than planned, in principle, to adapt the facilities to current regulations, “but we are now in the final stages of the work”, he stressed.
– Morales recalled that the residence, “will have 50 beds for residents, 30 for daytime stay, expandable to 60, which we are going to arrange from the outset, and a series of flats that will be supervised housing, which we will also launch with a capacity for 100 people. We will start the implementation on the 1st of March and, taking care of the bureaucratic part by the Junta Andalucía, we hope to open for the spring to be able to start making the first admissions”, has indicated the representative of the company. ALGECIRAS

Sacristan killed and priest injured in suspected jihadist attack in Algeciras:
– The assailant of north African origin, who has been arrested, stabbed the men, shouting “Allah akbar”. He is the sole suspect in both cases.
– A sacristan has died and a priest is seriously injured, with at least four people suffering less serious injuries, in two attacks on churches in Algeciras, in the province of Cadiz. According to all sources, the attacks appear to be jihad-related and the investigation has been taken over by a court specialising in terror offences.
– The victim of the fatal attack is David Valencia, a sacristan at La Palma church, and the injured man is Father Antonio Rodríguez, parish priest at the chapel of San Isidro. The latter was taken to hospital in a serious condition with a stab wound.
– The fatal attack at the church of La Palma was the second of the two attacks, and took place at around 7.30pm. The man, dressed in a djellaba, entered the building shouting “Allah Akbar” (“God is the greatest”) when the service was ending. He moved through the church knocking down images, crosses and candles with a machete and even went up to the high altar.
– The sacristan approached him to ask him to leave the church. The suspect refused and insulted him. He also threatened two women, and when the sacristan asked him to leave again the man began to chase him. He caught up with the sacristan outside in the nearby Plaza Alta where he stabbed him and beat him around the head, causing his death.

EUROPE

EU Nationals Travelling to UK on February 1 Warned of Prolonged Waiting Times Due to Strikes:
– The United Kingdom’s Home Office and Border Force have warned people travelling to the UK on February 1, to prepare for facing longer waiting times at border controls due to strikes that will take place at all UK air and maritime ports. 100,000 members of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), across 123 employers, will stage a walkout on February 1, impacting government ministries, museums, ports, and airports.
– Travellers passing through border controls in Calais, Dunkirk and Coquelles in Northern France will also be affected by the strikes.
– “If you are travelling into the UK via any entry point, you should prepare for disruption and check before you travel,” the UK authorities have noted in a statement, adding that the strikes are expected to last until February 2, at 7 am. Insects on the menu as EU approves two for human consumption:
– The maggot-like larvae of lesser mealworms — a type of shiny black beetle — and house crickets will become the third and fourth insects that can be sold as food for people in the European Union. Eight more applications await approval. On Tuesday, the EU gave the green light to the sale of the larvae in powder, frozen, paste and dried forms. The crickets can be sold as partially defatted powder. The new rules clarify that lesser mealworm larvae and house crickets are safe to eat for those without allergies. They have also ruled that foods containing them must be labeled.
– A more likely role for insect protein could be feeding it to livestock. This would bypass cultural norms that prevent some people from wanting to eat insects. If the insects were raised on organic waste — as some mealworm and fly larvae are well-suited to — the process could effectively recycle some of the vast quantities of food wasted each year.
– But raising insects to feed them to animals adds an extra step in the food production process that means more energy is lost to inefficiencies. Only some of the calories the insect eats will make it to the chicken raised on insect feed — and only some of those calories will make it to the person eating the chicken wing. If the insects were fed crops like soy or corn, and those insects are then used as feed for livestock, the planet may be worse off than if the animals ate the grains directly. Photo: AFLO.

Denmark calls for mandatory military service for women:
– Denmark plans compulsory military conscription for women, as the Nordic country seeks to significantly boost the size of its armed forces. The move can help Denmark meet its requirements under its Nato membership. It would also be “beneficial” for the military if it had more women employed, Jakob Ellemann-Jensen, the country’s defence minister and deputy prime minister, said in an interview with broadcaster TV2.
– Currently, women can join on a voluntary basis while men generally are required to serve if they are called on under a lottery system.
– The new measure has the backing of several women’s organisations and comes as Denmark, like the rest of Europe, provides increasing levels of support to Ukraine in the war to oust Russia from the country. Asteroid the size of a bus coming as close to earth as London to Cairo tonight:
– The asteroid, known as 2023 BU, will zoom 2,200 miles above the southern tip of South America – 10 times closer than most communication satellites circling overhead, and around the same distance as the UK to Cyprus. Discovered on Saturday, the asteroid is believed to be between 11ft (3.5 metres) and 28ft (8.5 metres) across. Experts insist it will be a near miss with no chance of the asteroid hitting Earth. British museums to stop using ‘mummy’ over negative associations:
– The word, say critics, has ties to imperialism and monsters, and should be replaced with ‘mummified remains.’ Conservatives are having a field day with the move.
– It’s not clear that Tutankhamun or Ramses II would appreciate the deference from the afterlife, but British museums are certainly providing plenty of material for conservative columnists who regularly gloat over wokeness or anything that sounds like political correctness. The British Museum in London, the National Museums of Scotland and the Great North Museum: Hancock have decided that, whenever possible, they will stop using the term “mummy” and speak instead of the “mummified remains of” the individual in question. Germany clears way for scores of tanks for Ukraine, U.S. also poised: Germany cleared the way on Wednesday for Europe to send scores of battle tanks to Ukraine, and Washington was poised make a similar announcement – moves hailed by Kyiv as a potential turning point in the war and condemned by Moscow as escalation. Germany, previously the West’s holdout, said it would send an initial company of 14 of its Leopard 2 tanks from its own stocks, and also approve shipments by other European countries. Spain ‘ready’ to send German tanks to Ukraine:
– “Spain is ready… to deal with our allies in any way necessary, whether that means sending Leopards, training in the use of Leopards or help in their maintenance and upkeep,” Defence Minister Margarita Robles said. She did not say how many tanks could be sent, nor when they could be delivered. Her remarks came shortly after Berlin said it would send some of its own Leopards to Kyiv and cleared other European nations to send their own stocks to Ukraine.
– Russia denounced Berlin’s decision to approve deliveries of Leopard tanks to Ukraine as “extremely dangerous”, warning it would take the conflict “to a new level of confrontation”. Full article: https://www.thelocal.es/20230125/spain-ready-to-send-german-tanks-to-ukraine-minister/

Microsoft suffers major outage: this is how it is affecting users around the world:
– Since early this Wednesday morning, 25 January, many popular Microsoft products have been affected by a worldwide outage affecting its email manager Outlook, Microsoft 365, Skype and Microsoft Teams among other products. “We have identified a possible network problem and are reviewing telemetry to determine the next troubleshooting steps,” the multinational announced in a tweet after 8.30am.
– Outage reports indicate that platforms are down for thousands of users worldwide. Microsoft has not specified the number of users affected, but data from the specialist downtime website Downdetector lists more than 3,900 incidents in India and more than 900 in Japan and about 500 in Spain. Reports of outages are also coming in from Australia, the UK and the United Arab Emirates.
– Due to the incident many users are unable to exchange messages, join video calls or use any features of the Teams application. Teams has more than 280 million users worldwide and is an integral part of the daily operations of businesses and schools. LastPass Parent Company GoTo (formerly remote assistance app LogMeIn) Suffers Data Breach, Customers’ Backups Compromised:
– {I regularly warn readers not to use Password-Saver apps like LastPass, and to uninstall remote assistance apps like LogMeIn as soon as you are done using them. These are all cloud based tools, and the cloud is NOT secure. These apps provide hackers access to your computer when these all too frequent hacks of the app databases occur. -Ed.}
– LastPass owner GoTo (formerly LogMeIn) on Tuesday disclosed that unidentified threat actors were able to steal encrypted backups of some customers’ data along with an encryption key for some of those backups in a November 2022 incident. The breach, which targeted a third-party cloud storage service, impacted Central, Pro, join.me, Hamachi, and RemotelyAnywhere products, the company said.
– “The affected information, which varies by product, may include account usernames, salted and hashed passwords, a portion of multi-factor Authentication (MFA) settings, as well as some product settings and licensing information,” GoTo’s Paddy Srinivasan said.
– The announcement comes nearly two months after both GoTo and LastPass disclosed “unusual activity within a third-party cloud storage service” that’s shared by the two platforms.
– LastPass, in December 2022, also revealed that the digital burglary leveraged information stolen from an earlier breach that took place in August and enabled the adversary to steal a massive stash of customer data, including a backup of their encrypted password vaults. The obtained information was “used to target another employee, obtaining credentials and keys which were used to access and decrypt some storage volumes within the cloud-based storage service,” it noted.

How to see the green comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) visible in the night sky now as it approaches Earth:
– Gorgeous green comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) should now be visible to the naked eye under the right dark sky conditions.
– The comet is rapidly approaching perigee, its closest point to Earth, which is making it easier to spot in the night sky. The comet, first discovered in March 2022 by astronomers Frank Masci and Bryce Bolin using the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) at the Palomar Observatory in California, has been brightening since November, wowing astrophotographers with its brilliant green tail.
– Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) is currently making its way through the northern skies and should reach its brightest magnitude in early February, according to In-The-Sky.org as it approaches perigee on Feb. 1. To see the comet for yourself, look to the north just after sunset and look for a faint greenish glow. Under the right dark sky conditions, the comet could be visible to the unaided eye, but binoculars will certainly make the job easier.
– SpaceWeather.com reported that comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) formed what is known as an “anti-tail,” a phenomenon which causes a comet to appear to have a second, forward-facing tail. In reality, an anti-tail is an optical illusion caused when larger dust particles form a disk along the comet’s orbit. As Earth passes through the comet’s orbital plane, this dusty disk can be seen side-on, appearing as a reversed anti-tail. Photo: TheSkyLive.

The rise in the price of electricity in 2022 made it 30% more expensive to recharge an electric car: {Translation, summary}
– The average cost of recharging an electric vehicle in Spain increased by 30% in 2022 due to the increase in the price of electricity in the country. This increase in cost is exemplified in the analysis with a journey between Madrid and Barcelona (626 kilometers away) with a 100% electric vehicle, whose charging cost would have risen to 49 euros on average in 2022 on the Zunder network, compared to the 37.5 euros of the previous year.
– The eToro report qualifies that the price of recharging electric vehicles varies depending on the place where it is carried out, since in homes it is lower than that reached in public networks. The boom in aerothermal heating equipment is so great in Spain that the Government is already offering aid to install it: {Translation, summary}
– In case you did not know it, aerothermal energy is another type of renewable energy that takes advantage of the thermal energy that is already in the air and transfers it to the interior of the house, thus providing heating and hot water. That is to say, it is a heat pump and it is captured by means of an exchanger and an external environment fan. One of the main characteristics is that it only consumes energy electrical for the compressor motor to work, this means that for every kWh it uses, it generates 3 kWh of heat energy.
– The boom in aerothermal heating equipment has led the Government to offer aid from the Spanish Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. According to the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), these “aids vary between 40% to 70%, depending on the technology used”, in addition, the base amount of the subsidies are:
Residential sector: 500 euros/kW of aid with a maximum value of aid of 3,000 euros/dwelling.
Publicly owned homes and the third sector : 650 euros/kW of aid with a maximum value of 3,900 euros/home.
– There is an additional grant to adjust the air conditioning and electrical circuits:
Underfloor heating: 600 euros/kW with a limit of 3,600 euros per home.
Low temperature radiators or fan coils: 550 euros/kW with a limit of 1,830 euros per home.
– The aid can be requested until December 31, 2023 through this website ( https://www.idae.es/ayudas-y-financiacion/para-energias-renovables-en-autoconsumo-almacenamiento-y-termicas-sector/estado-de-las-convocatorias-por-comunidad-autonoma-rd-4772021-climatizacion-renovable-residencial ), in addition, users may have an inspection made according to their Autonomous Community. ANDALUCIA

These are the medicines that are in short supply in Andalusian pharmacies: {Translation, summary}
– Andalusian pharmacies, like those throughout the country, are having problems with the supply of certain medicines, which are either not being supplied by the laboratories or are arriving in dribs and drabs. When a drug does not meet national consumption needs, the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) officially considers it to be a “supply problem”.
– The current problem is that some of the affected drugs are widely used. This is the case of Efferalgan, a brand name, and amoxicillin, a generic antibiotic. Efferalgan is a medicine from the UPSA laboratory that began to have supply problems as early as August 2021 and worsened at the end of last year; children’s doses are now also in short supply. Its active ingredient is paracetamol.
– The Cordoba College of Pharmacists told ABC of other medicines with shortages: Ozempic, for diabetics; Tardyferon, iron pills to prevent and treat anaemia; Caverject, a vasodilator that acts like Viagra; Rivotril (Clonazepam/Klonopin), a benzodiazepine tranquilizer; and Zitromax, another antibiotic. What weather can we expect in the south of Spain for the rest of this week?:
– The low temperatures will continue to be felt across this week in Andalucía, especially on Thursday, due to the location of an anticyclone that will cause a mass of cold and dry air to enter the Spanish mainland that will leave maximum values of between eight and 15 degrees Celsius, and minimums that will be below zero degrees in some parts of the region.
– Looking ahead to Friday and Saturday, the weather expert indicated that “little cloudiness is expected” but on Sunday “there could be an increase, with the probability of showers on the Mediterranean coast.” As for the maximum temperatures, they will be relatively low for this time of year both inland and in the Mediterranean coast areas, but “they will not be exceptional”. Guardia Civil smash illegal tobacco ring exploiting Ukrainians fleeing war:
– Spain’s Guardia Civil said on Sunday that they had dismantled a gang that were operating three illegal tobacco factories employing Ukrainians who fled to escape Russia’s invasion and were kept in ‘crammed’ housing. The operation is alleged to have smuggled ‘large quantities’ of tobacco transformed into counterfeit cigarettes that were sold across Spain and neighbouring countries, the police force said in a statement.
– The factories, located in Logroño, in the northern wine-producing region of La Rioja, in Seville in the south and Valencia in the east, used ‘advanced technology’ and could produce 540,000 cigarette packs per day, it added. Police said the ring employed Ukrainians who had moved to Spain illegally or had entered the country legally seeking refuge from the war.
– The Ukrainians lived in the factories, ‘crammed into prefabricated modules, and without leaving the facilities so as not to be detected, working long hours’, the statement said. Austria Firm on Its Stance Against Expansion of Schengen Area: During a visit to Bulgaria, Chancellor Nehammer stressed that Austria has concerns over illegal migration and at the same time pointed out that the Schengen area cannot be expanded at the moment as the system is in a major crisis. “It is clear that our Schengen veto is not directed against a country, but that the Schengen area does not work and cannot be expanded at the moment. In order to be able to reopen internal borders, Bulgaria must be supported in effectively protecting the external borders,” Nehammer wrote on his official Twitter account. “We need a clear signal at the European level that the front-line countries in the face of migrant pressure are not left alone to deal with this problem,” Chancellor Nehammer stressed. Apple iOS 16.3 Released- What’s New On Your iPhone:
– Apple has just released the stable build of iOS 16.3 for all compatible iPhones, and it brings a few notable features. The first and most important change of them all is support for hardware security keys to protect your Apple ID. A security key is an external device that looks like a USB thumb drive but serves the critical job of identity verification. These keys are mostly deployed as an added layer of protection in the same vein as two-factor authentication, but the idea here is that instead of receiving a two-factor code on your registered mobile number or email address (which can be intercepted by a bad actor), a security key handles two-factor verification at the hardware level. Right now, a physical security key is the most fool-proof system for protecting your accounts and wallets because it is always in your possession. Using a physical security key is an optional feature on iPhones.
– Other changes are support for the second-gen HomePod smart speaker, as well as a wider rollout of the Advanced Data Protection feature that now encrypts 23 types of data (photos, notes, etc.) stored in your iCloud storage. New Unity wallpapers honoring Black History Month are here, as well. Apple has also tweaked the button gesture for activating an SOS alert on iPhones. You will now have to hold and release the power + volume button combo to call an emergency helpline. Earlier, users were only required to long-press these buttons, which led to accidental SOS calls.

Microsoft lays off 10,000 workers same week it invests $10 Billion in Artificial Intellegence (AI) firm:
– The rumors are true, Microsoft is investing $10 billion in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT and DALL-E 2. The investment is the third phase of Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI in an attempt to “accelerate AI breakthroughs to ensure these benefits are broadly shared with the world,” the company wrote in a blog post.
– This deal was announced less than a week after Microsoft announced that it would lay off 10,000 people — about five percent of its workforce — by the end of the third quarter of the 2023 fiscal year. Looks like Microsoft is all-in on replacing as many human employees as possible with AI robots. Full article: https://mashable.com/article/microsoft-open-ai-chat-gpt

ARTIFICIAL INTELLEGENCE (AI)

AI is coming to your workplace. Is Europe ready?:
– While artificial intelligence tools have been deployed in the gig economy for a while now, they are making rapid inroads into other sectors. What does it mean for your job?
– Renan Rodrigues had been working as a food delivery driver at Swiss company Smood for about a year and a half when “the robot” took over. This is how the 33-year-old describes the algorithm-powered program that allocated deliveries and shifts for him and his colleagues. Smood had used such software since he started working there in 2020, Rodrigues told DW. But at a certain point, “the robot” became entirely responsible for planning his working day, according to him, and appealing decisions to human managers was no longer possible.
– The goal of “the robot” was to organize deliveries in the most efficient way possible. From his employer’s perspective, Rodrigues is sure that it worked. When he started at Smood in the small Swiss town of Yverdon-Les-Bains, it was typical to do around two deliveries an hour, he said. By the time he left, it was more like four or five. But at what cost in human terms? Full article: https://www.dw.com/en/ai-is-coming-to-your-workplace-is-europe-ready/a-64472539

SCIENCE

Earth’s inner core rotation may be reversing:
– The rotation of the Earth’s solid inner core may have recently paused and could be reversing, according to a study published in Nature Geoscience this week. These findings indicate that changes in the rotation could occur on a decadal scale and could aid our understanding of how processes deep in the Earth affect its surface.
– Yi Yang and Xiaodong Song analysed the difference in the waveform and travel time of seismic waves from near-identical earthquakes that have passed through the Earth’s inner core along similar paths since the 1960s. They found that since around 2009, paths that previously showed significant temporal variation have exhibited little change, suggesting that the inner core rotation has paused. They also identified that this may be associated with a reversal of the inner core rotation as part of a seven-decade oscillation with a previous turning point occurring in the early 1970s. The authors indicate that this variation correlates with changes in geophysical observations at the Earth’s surface, such as the magnetic field and the length of day. SPAIN

Almost two thirds of the cars in circulation in Spain are over 10 years old and 57% are diesel: {Translation, summary}
– Almost two thirds (63.6%) of the 25.34 million vehicles on Spanish roads are more than ten years old and 57% use a diesel engine, according to data for 2021 published by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).
– The figures also show that the average age of the car fleet in Spain in 2021 was 13.5 years (although it is now estimated to be around 14 years old), that 20.11% of cars (5.09 million units) were five years old or less and that 16.24% (4.11 million) were between five and ten years old.
In this respect, the car fleet with the highest percentage of vehicles older than ten years in Europe is Romanian, with 86.65% of the total, while Greece is in second place with 83.82% and Poland closes the podium with 80.55%.
– By engine type, 56.9% of vehicles in Spain in 2021 were diesel, while 39.5% used petrol and only 0.3% were pure electric. Plug-in hybrids accounted for 0.3% of the fleet, hybrids for 2.7%, natural gas for 0.1% and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for 0.3%.
– Another aspect on which ACEA has collected data is the motorisation rate, i.e. the number of passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants. In the European Union, the average motorisation rate in 2021 was 567 passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants. Spain is in twelfth place in this ranking, with 535 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, while the leader is Luxembourg, with 698. In second place is Poland, with 684 cars, and in third place is Italy (672). Horse-drawn carriages in holiday destinations to be phased out:
– Horse-drawn carriages, a traditional leisurely mode of transportation for visitors throughout Spain, will be phased out in favour of electric-powered buggies {starting} as early as the first quarter of 2023. Although the draft legislation has already been adopted, the various autonomous communities still need to clear a number of hurdles before it can become a reality.
– The Seville council, and the coachmen (pic) themselves are totally against swapping their horses for electric buggies and insist that animal welfare measures are already in place. MALAGA

The coldest days of winter arrive in Malaga with frosts: {Translation}
– The coldest days of the winter are upon us. The week begins with the arrival of a very cold and dry polar air mass from northern Europe, which will cause a general drop in temperatures. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), values will be recorded which, in general, will be between 1 and 3 degrees below the normal average for this time of year. In the case of the province of Malaga in coastal areas – where the sea always helps to compensate for the mercury – the maximum temperatures will be around 14-15 degrees and the minimum around 6 degrees, while inland there may be frosts.
– Although the sun will be out, the atmosphere will be freezing in many parts of the province of Malaga, especially in the first half of the week, when temperatures are expected to barely rise above 0 degrees inland; temperatures may drop to -2 in the Serrania de Ronda, Antequera and inland Axarquia. In the rest of the country, the Aemet warns that in areas of the plateau it will fall below 4 degrees below zero, and even -6 degrees (can reach -15 degrees in the Pyrenees).
– The cold will also reach the coastal municipalities of Malaga, although it will be somewhat less noticeable. Minimum temperatures will be around 6 degrees in Malaga city, with maximum temperatures ranging between 14-15 degrees. In Marbella it will be similar, as well as in Estepona and other areas of the western coast. Slightly lower values will be recorded on the east coast, in towns such as Nerja and Torrox. In the case of Velez-Malaga, temperatures will be between 3 and 15 degrees.
– This Sunday, between 9 and 17 degrees Celsius were recorded in the capital, but temperatures will begin to drop on Monday 23 January, with frost in the sierras. The wind will blow from the north on Monday, changing to the east and northeast over the next few days, with strong intervals along the coast.
– There will be no rain throughout the week, apart from the possibility of some scattered precipitation on the western coast in the early hours of Tuesday 24th to Wednesday 25th. On these two days, which will be the coldest in the province, the snow level will be between 600 and 800 metres, which could result in some snowfalls on the peaks of the sierras or in high areas of the Ronda highlands, the Antequera region and Axarquia.
– On Thursday 26th January the maximum temperatures will recover a little, returning to 17 degrees in Malaga city, Marbella and Velez-Malaga; and around 9-10 in Ronda and Antequera. But in the evenings and early mornings there will still be a cold atmosphere, and the following day (Friday 27th) it will fall again, on the eve of the next weekend, which is expected to be freezing. Gang that stuffed 20 tons of tomatoes with hashish busted:
– The operation involved the seizure of 22,370 kilograms of cannabis resin, numerous state-of-the-art mobile phones and seven vehicles that the criminal organisation used in their activities. They had ‘cleverly’ concealed the drug inside fake tomatoes to make it difficult to detect.
– As a result of the collaboration between the Guardia Civil and the National Police in the provinces of Córdoba, Málaga and Cádiz, it was possible to identify the main members that made up the criminal organisation that was dedicated to the trafficking of large amounts of the drug. PETS

Cat Seeks Home:
– On behalf of ‘Refugio de Leo’ we are looking for a safe and warm permanent home for our foster boy Campanilo. Campanilo was seriously ill when he was brought to the shelter as a kitten. He has been to the vet many times.
– Unfortunately the trauma caused permanent neurological damage (Ataxie). He remains shaky and somewhat unstable when he walks and sometimes he falls over while jumping or playing. Fortunately his ailment is not too serious and he can walk, run and play well. Once Campanilo gets used to you, he is an incredibly sweet, grateful, affectionate and playful pet who loves your company.
– He really needs a loving home where he can stay for good. Campanilo is less than a year old. Apart from his limps he is healthy, has had all tests and shots and has been neutered. He can easily live in an apartment and does not have to go outside, also because he will probably not be able to defend himself against other animals.
– Who wants to take good care of this very sweet black and white cat? Please contact Bob and Jolanda (Torrox Costa) 0031-622911037 ; Email: bobnoletATgmail.com

BONEHEAD AWARD

This time the award goes to The Trans Cultural Mindfulness Alliance: One activist group in Norway is calling for Aretha Franklin’s hit 1968 song “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” to be removed from both Apple Music and Spotify after they deemed its lyrics offensive. The Trans Cultural Mindfulness Alliance took to Twitter last week to condemn the ballad, citing that it has ignited harm against transgender women. “Aretha Franklin’s 1968 song ‘Natural Woman’ perpetuates multiple harmful anti-trans stereotypes,” the organization tweeted. “There is no such thing as a ‘natural’ woman.” The message continued, “The song has helped inspire acts of harm against transgender women. TCMA is requesting it is removed from Spotify & Apple Music.” The organization clarified later in a follow-up tweet that they were not, in fact, a parody account, but rather that they were trying to “make culture more fair for transgender individuals.” Full article: https://nypost.com/2023/01/23/aretha-franklin-song-natural-woman-blasted-by-trans-group/ & Video Link 1 & Video Link 2

And while we are getting all hyper-sensitive, here’s Aretha being a racist back before the “cancel culture” cancelled comedy!

SPAIN

Editor’s Note: The huge multi-party anti-Sanchez protest in Madrid this weekend is even being covered by the mostly socialist Spanish main stream media. That is unusual, normally they avoid articles critical of President Sanchez. It may indicate some socialists are also unhappy with Sanchez? Photo: Martha Jara.

Cross Party Condemnation of Sanchez Gov’t- Tens of Thousands demonstrate in Madrid against Sánchez and “the political direction that Spain has taken”: {Translation from europapress.es}
– The conveners assure that “it is not about left, right or center, but about defending democracy”, amid shouts of “Government, resign”
– A massive demonstration called by more than a hundred associations and civil society groups gathered this midday in Madrid’s Plaza de Cibeles to protest against Pedro Sánchez, his “government of lies and dark pacts” and “the political direction that Spain has taken”.
-A total of 31,000 demonstrators, according to figures from the Government Delegation in Madrid, occupied the square and the adjacent streets, mainly carrying Spanish flags or banners with messages such as “Sánchez, traitor”, “Government, resign”, “Separatists, get out of here” or “Democracy, yes, Dictatorship, no”.
– Under the slogan ‘For Spain, democracy and the Constitution’, the protest began at 12 noon and a stage was set up around the square where the organisers, Foro España Cívica and Fundación Foro Libertad y Alternativa, expressed their “concern” and “rejection of the political direction that Spain has taken”.
*SERIOUS EROSION OF INSTITUTIONS*
– “It is not a question of left, right or centre, but of ‘not remaining impassive’ in the face of the serious erosion of our institutions, the deterioration of our democracy and the weakening of our state”, stated the manifesto read out during the rally.The manifesto called for “a Spain united in equal rights” and criticised the reform of the Penal Code “by the back door”, amid shouts of “Government, resign” from the demonstrators.
– The protest was supported by the PP, Vox and Ciudadanos, but the only national leader to attend was Santiago Abascal.
The leader of Vox said he was “convinced” of “the need for a permanent and massive mobilisation until the autocrat Pedro Sánchez is ousted from power”. “We are faced with the worst of government, with lies to the electorate, and dark pacts with enemies of the constitutional order and the unity of the nation…” he added. In addition, he has accused the Government of “trampling” the Constitution, “illegally imprisoning the Spanish” and “releasing” “rapists, terrorists and coup plotters”, in addition to “threatening the opposition while surrounding himself with billionaires from international forums”.
– For its part, the national PP was represented this Saturday by several members its board. PP Deputy Secretary for Organisation, Miguel Tellado, criticised the incompetence and arrogance of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and reminds that “much of what Sanchez has done is invalid in our system”.
– “This is an incompetent government. Its incompetence and arrogance are allowing sex offenders to leave prison early and is allowing more than 200 to have their sentences reduced,” said Tellado, referring to the ‘only yes is yes’ law.
– In addition, the PP’s deputy secretary of organisation stressed that he would like the socialists to be at the demonstration too, but that their party “would never let them”, and recalled the example of the former president of the Community of Madrid, Joaquín Leguina, who was recently expelled from the PSOE after expressing opinions counter to the socialist/Sanchez agenda.
– Ciudadanos’ deputies Inés Arrimadas and Guillermo Díaz attended the protest, as well as the deputy mayor of Madrid, Begoña Villacís, who pointed out the objective is “reversing everything that has been done” in recent years by the state government to “disarm the rule of law”. “There are three words that all constitutionalists should not be afraid of and we must always vindicate: Spain, Democracy and Constitution”, Villacís remarked.
– Among the attendees were also the former UPyD leader Rosa Díez, the former PP politician Aleix Vidal-Quadras, the philosopher Fernando Savater and the writer Andrés Trapiello, among others. Source, Spanish.
Santiago Abascal quote,  Source, Spanish.

ENERGY CRISIS

Brussels tells Spain that the extension of the ‘Iberian exception’ cannot go beyond December: {Translation, summary}
– The European Commission has informed Spain and Portugal that the extension of the ‘Iberian exception’, by which both countries have been able to temporarily limit the price of gas for electricity production, cannot go beyond December 2023, the date on which the temporary framework of the support measures for the war in Ukraine expires, so as long as the European Union (EU) does not modify it.
– Both the extension of the mechanism and the deadlines are still pending approval by Brussels, but if such a scenario were to occur, Ministry sources point out that there is a possibility that the temporary framework of aid for the war in Ukraine could be extended and also allow for an extension of the Iberian solution beyond December.
– Another option is that the ‘Iberian exception’ would cease to be necessary, if, during the Spanish presidency of the EU Council, from July to December 2023, the reform of the electricity market is completed.
– The ‘Iberian exception’, which has been applied in Spain and Portugal since 15 June, is a mechanism that caps the price of gas for electricity generation in order to reduce the price of electricity. During the first six months of this measure, the price of gas was capped at 40 euros/MWh and, from then on, it is increased by five euros/MWh per month until May, when it comes to an end.

MALAGA

Mercadona is hiring staff across 13 municipalities in Malaga province:
– If you are looking for work, this might interest you. The Spanish supermarket giant, Mercadona, has kicked off 2023 with an ambitious staff selection process throughout the country.
– In Malaga, the company has 14 positions open in Torrox, Nerja, Malaga city, Torremolinos, Vélez-Málaga, Algarrobo, Rincón de la Victoria, Marbella, Fuengirola, Mijas, Manilva, Benalmádena and Estepona.
– The different job offers can be consulted on the company’s own web site. The portal (https://mercadona.avature.net/es_ES/Careers/SearchJobs/?3_60_3=243) allows filtering by keywords, type of contract, working day or province where a vacant position is offered, among other options.
– One point to keep in mind is that for most of the vacant positions it is not necessary to have previous experience, since it is the supermarket chain itself that is in charge of training its new employees.
– The positions offered are based on starting salaries of €1,507 gross per month in the case of a full-time job 40hrs per week rising to €1838 after 3 years. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/mercadona-jobs-costa-del-sol-20230116172703-nt.html

– The Government delegate visited the works today, which represent an investment of 387,000 euros and will put an end to decades of waiting for a new health infrastructure. The works are already over 50% complete and are advancing at a good pace.
– Once completed, the health center will have six consultations spaces, as well as an area for maternal and therapeutic education, and specific areas for pediatrics and emergencies, being able to care for both patients from Cómpeta and those from the towns of Archez, Canillas de Albaida, Sedella, Salares, and Sayalonga. UK

Nearly half a million UK workers set for mass strike demanding higher pay:
– Close to half a million workers are ready to strike on a single day as Britain faces an escalation of industrial action across a number of sectors. Unions representing civil servants, teachers, university staff and train drivers have said their members will walk out on Feb. 1 as part of demands for higher pay to cope with the worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation.
– About 450,000 workers have a mandate to strike, according to Bloomberg calculations. If all the union members took up their right, the day’s industrial action would come close to matching every walkout throughout the whole of November.
– Labor groups are also planning widespread protests on the day, rallying against government plans to impose minimum service levels during strikes.

EUROPE

EU postpones launch of EES border entry system once again: The new system, which will require non-EU travellers to register and have biometric data including fingerprints taken at the border, was due to come into force in May 2023 after already having been pushed back from 2022. But this week it was announced – perhaps to no-one’s surprise – that the system will not be ready by May. Although a new date has not been set the EU now says it will be launched “by the end of 2023”. Tennis News- Alejandro Davidovich advances in Australia after beating Bublik in five sets: {Translation, summary}
– The man from Malaga fought in a duel that was stopped due to the extremely high temperatures that were registered in the Australian city to preserve the health of the athletes. Finally, he won, after more than three hours of play, 6-0, 6-7 (3), 3-6, 6-4 and 6-3.
– In the second round, Davidovich will face the American Tommy Paul, who easily defeated the German Struff 6-1, 7-6 (6) and 6-2. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/deportes/Alejandro-Davidovich-avanza-Australia-Bublik_0_1757824505.html

SCAMS

The National Police warns about the counterfeiting of 20 euro bills and coin scams: {Translation, summary}
– The national body explains the real banknote is characterized by the touch, it is “slightly rough”, and it is also “different from a simple paper”. Also, on real notes, the “color of the number of the value of the banknote changes with the incidence of light by turning it, and produces a reflection that moves.” In addition to the trick of touching the bill, they comment that “it is necessary to hold the bill up to the light, where some of the security measures can be seen: such as the watermark, the window, or the thread to avoid counterfeits”.
– The Guardia Civil recently warned of a scam that can mean a loss of 2 euros for your pocket, or at least 68 cents. There are Turkish lira coins (pic) circulating that look very much like two-euro coins. To differentiate it is easy: first you have to look at the face and read that it says “Türkiye Cumhuyireti”, which translates as Republic of Turkey. And on the so-called cross there is a number, 1, and another legend “Yeni Turk Liresi”, which translated means: a new Turkish lira.
– The Guardia Civil warned of the flourishing of Argentinean two-peso coins, with a value of 0.024 euros, which thieves, crooks, clever and foolish (or clueless) tried to place as one-euro coins.
– Special care must also be taken with several currencies that look similar to a 1 euro coin, and which arrive easily in Spain: the Turkish lira, the Argentine peso, the South African Rand, the Thai Baht or the Moroccan dirham.
– Another is the Egyptian pound coin (pic). The obverse shows the Pharaoh Tutankhamun and is easily recognizable. The reverse has a one drawn on it and underneath it the English legend One Pound. Is it attractive? Yes, but as the Guardia Civil warns, you have to be careful: it is only worth 0.049 euro cents. Photos: Twitter. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has given its go-ahead, so the vaccine can now be marketed and distributed.
