TORREMOLINOS

Caring for the street cats in Torremolinos:
– In a corner of Torremolinos at La Carihuela an observant eye might notice the sign ‘Colonia Felina / CER’ (pic). This marks one the locations in Costa del Sol town where a dedicated legion of cat lovers operates from the association Málaga Felina. These volunteers look after colonies of stray cats and run the capture, sterilisation and return of the animals to their neighbourhoods scheme, a process known as CER.
– Two years ago the local council issued the carers with accreditation cards and so they cannot be fined for feeding stray cats. (Yes, many local towns do have laws against feeding feral cats, including Torrox, where the cat-ladies feed the strays in Torrox Costa, placing the bowls just below the new signs saying “It is forbidden to feed the cats”, in Spanish, English & German . -Ed.) Full article & Photo credit: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/benalmadena-torremolinos/street-cats-20230117130804-nt.html

{Translation} 17/01/2023 16:13

– The storm of wind that affects the entire Peninsula is also being felt in the province of Granada, which is on yellow notice for this matter, and has caused strong gusts in the Granada massif that have reached the ski resort to close. so now the work is focused on the reconditioning of ski lifts and slopes. Although the White Blackbird and Russian Sleigh activities are open to the public.
– The province of Granada will foreseeably enter a yellow warning this Wednesday due to the risk of snowfall, according to information released by the State Meteorological Agency, and in the ski resort the snow level is expected, initially around 1,000 meters at the beginning of the day, go down to about 500 meters at the end of the day.

UK

British Protest “15-Minute Cities” Where They Will Become Prisoners of the State- Oxford is First in UK:
– Fifteen-minute cities are popping up everywhere, and the World Economic Forum is wildly enthusiastic about them. Last year it was announced that Paris, France, would become a 15-minute city, and now the British city of Oxford is next. The city council has announced that it will divide Oxford into 15-minute neighborhoods or small 15-minute towns billed as “greener, cleaner and safer.” See image below. However, outraged Brits are fighting back. Oxford citizens have taken to the streets, “The media is silent, of course,” writes UK journalist Sophie Corcoran. She implored people to stand with the citizens of Oxford against this type of totalitarianism.
– Residents are allowed to leave their 15-minute city a maximum of 100 times a year, but then they must first register their car, which is tracked throughout the city via smart cameras. Otherwise, you will be fined. In addition, the government will track and control your every movement through your smartphones & facial recognition technology.
– The “15-minute city” concept is crucial in the United Nations Agenda 2030 and their Net Zero green agenda. The World Economic Forum is also pushing this new concept. Oxford, which has declared a ‘climate emergency,’ is hoping their 15-minute cities will help achieve the Council’s ‘Net Zero carbon Oxford’ vision by 2040.” Oxford will be divided into six zones ‘to save the planet’ from “global warming.” Electronic fences are placed on access roads to ensure residents remain within their own zone. EUROPE

EU plans changes to pharmaceuticals law to avoid medicine shortages:
– Proposed changes to a European Union pharmaceuticals law will include stronger obligations for the supply of medicines and earlier notifications of shortages, EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides said on Tuesday. Kyriakides told a session of the European Parliament that shortages of antibiotics are a growing problem for many European countries. She said the European Commission’s proposal to revise the pharmaceuticals legislation is planned for March.
– Shortages of antibiotics have been reported in 26 European countries, the European Medicines Agency says. The unseasonably early upsurge in respiratory infections in Europe this winter and insufficient production capacity are the root causes of the shortages, Kyriakides said.
(Other sources blame cutbacks on deliveries from China. The EU is 85-90 % dependent on the Chinese market for all ingredients and 33% dependent on it for active ingredients. https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/E-9-2020-004734_EN.html -Ed.)

HEALTH

The growing haircut fad that is causing ringworm outbreaks in hairdressing salons: {Translation, summary}
– The Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology has warned this Tuesday about an increase in cases of fungal infections of the head, the so-called “scalp ringworm”, mainly in adolescents who frequently go to hairdressers for haircuts by shaving or razoring.
– In a statement, the academy clarifies that the increase in cases has been detected in the last two years, attributing it to the fashion for shaving and indicating that the means of infection are razors that have not been properly disinfected.
– The clinical manifestation of ringworm of the scalp consists of areas where sudden alopecia appears, together with itching or flaking, as well as inflammation in the area which may sometimes involve oozing, pain and fever. TECH

Apple rolls out Macbooks with new M2 chips in rare January launch:
– The new Macbook Pro models were expected for months, but supply-chain issues meant the launch was delayed from last year to early 2023, Bloomberg News reported in October.
– The roll-out of the devices using Apple’s latest versions of the M2 chip, which it debuted last year, is an outgrowth of the tech giant’s decision in 2020 to use semiconductors designed in-house after 15 years of relying on Intel’s (INTC.O) technology.
– The new Mac mini starts at $599 and will be available from Jan. 24. The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with the latest chips start at $1,999, compared with the $1,299 price tag for a 13-inch model fitted with the M2 chip. NATURE

Powerful new laser redirects lightning bolts:
– The device fires short and intense laser pulses to generate an ionized channel in the sky called a laser-induced filament that can guide lighting discharges away from vulnerable sites. “By firing a thousand laser pulses per second into the clouds, we can safely discharge lightning bolts and make the world a little safer,” says Clemens Herkommer, an engineer at TRUMPF Scientific Lasers and participant in the Laser Lightning Rod (LLR) project.
– The device, which is the size of a large family car, was installed and tested on Säntis Mountain in northeastern Switzerland next to a 400-foot (123 meters) telecommunications antenna. At the Davos Forum, elites ponder what’s next for a world fragmented by Covid and the Ukraine invasion- the majority consensus seems to be that 2023 is going to be bleak:
– The World Economic Forum, that great liturgy that the globalized world holds in Davos each year, is taking place this week in the Swiss resort under disturbing warning signs. Looking ahead at the immediate future, and despite the fact that the last few months have produced some encouraging data in terms of inflation and growth, the majority consensus seems to be that 2023 is going to be bleak. On a deeper level, and perhaps more importantly, the disruptive forces that are fragmenting the world seem unstoppable. The great expansive phase of globalization of the last three decades has undergone a radical shift.
– A survey published by the forum ahead of the gathering shows that two-thirds of the leading economists who were consulted, both from the public and private spheres, consider a global recession likely in 2023. This is twice as many as in the previous consultation in September.
– Another survey by Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC) among 4,400 top executives in 105 countries shows that more than 70% foresee an economic downturn.
