2 WINDOWS 11 ALERTS- Beware of BAD UPDATE (KB5023706), slowing SSD speeds + Notepad problem:
– Microsoft may have a problem on its hands — the latest Windows 11 update doesn’t seem to be working as intended. According to various user reports, the update drastically slows SSD speeds, in some cases even cutting them in half! (This happened to me, the fix below worked. -Ed.) If you’ve noticed that your PC is loading slowly or programs aren’t running as quickly as you’d hoped, you might be affected by this problem.
– Poor performance can be explained in any number of ways, but the users are seeing drops specifically in SSD speeds, and all of this seems to have started only once they’ve installed the update. The drops are huge, and even the best NVMe SSDs can’t seem to keep up after the latest patch. In fact, the better the SSD the worse the problem appears to be.
– It’s almost certain that it will be fixed if the update really is to blame, but until then, the only fix is to uninstall the latest patch and hold off on installing it again until it’s proven to work well.
– Uninstalling the update is easy. Type in Windows Update Settings into the search bar, then click on View Update History. Click on the latest update you’ve installed (KB5023706) and uninstall it. (Then go to Windows Updates, under the heading “More Options” click “Pause Updates” and choose to pause for 4 or 5 weeks.) This is more of a bandaid than a permanent solution, but it should help until Microsoft comes out with an official fix. – NOTEPAD FREEZES: {Editor}
– Some Win 11 users are reporting on tech forums that Notepad is locking up while in use. The problem seems to have something to do with changing from the default settings; changing fonts, or selecting the dark theme, in Notepad settings, in most cases. A fix for some, including me, was to return to the default Notepad settings, and then running “sfc /scannow scan” from the command line in admin mode to repair broken files. When scan is finished, restart.

– Donation Presentation News. On Tuesday the 14th March, the Phoenix Club members invited the Presidents of La Cruz Roja and AVISA to receive our annual donations. La Cruz Roja received €3500 and AVISA received €1000. In addition a UK Service charity ’Walking with the Wounded’ also received €1000. Our President Tim Denham and Treasurer Mary Burbery made the presentations.

Guardia Civil alert about a scam related to the 200-euro aid cheque: {Translation}
– The Guardia Civil warns about the latest SMS scam telling the victim that it has not been possible to receive the 200 euro grant that the government is offering. No official institution is going to ask you for any personal data via SMS. The main objective is to get hold of your personal bank details. You are told to update the information in a link, which redirects to a fraudulent website, which appears to be that of the Tax Agency’s website and in which a form appears, with the aim of disorienting the victim and which may even create doubts. You are asked for the following information: full name, telephone number, address, postcode, telephone number, card number, card expiry date, security code and the card’s PIN. And here’s the catch! You should not click on it, let alone provide any personal details, and you should never enter your bank card number.
– The Office of Internet Security (OSI) recommends that if you have received an SMS with these or similar characteristics and you have not yet clicked on the link, you should delete it immediately. If you have clicked on the link, you should contact your bank to report the incident and, if there are unauthorised transactions, block them. The Spanish Red Cross, in collaboration with the Nerja Town Council’s Department of the Environment, has launched the environmental awareness campaign “1m2 for rivers, lakes and reservoirs”, which will involve a day of cleaning up the Chillar River. It will take place on Saturday 18 March from 10am, starting at the mouth of the river, in the vicinity of the Chucho beach. Details of the New Animal Welfare Law: {Translation, summary}
– The Animal Welfare Law, definitively approved this Thursday by the Congress of Deputies, affects all companion and wild animals in captivity, except hunting, guard and work dogs.

– The new law makes the owner responsible for any damage, harm or nuisance that they may cause to people, other animals or things, public spaces or the natural environment, and establishes a system of penalties.

– Also eliminated “in all cases” are mechanical attractions or fairground carousels and the use of wild animals in circuses, as well as using them for travelling or begging with them, except for homeless people, who may be accompanied by their animals.
– Animals may not be fed with viscera, carcasses and other offal of animals that have not passed the appropriate health controls, nor may animals be used as a lure, reward, prize, raffle or advertising promotion.
– It is also forbidden to fight dogs or to train or incite them to attack other animals or people.
– Likewise, it is expressly forbidden to sacrifice animals in any circumstance, for example, old age, illness, not finding an adopter or for economic reasons, except under justified euthanasia and controlled by a veterinarian only in the case of avoiding the animal’s suffering due to non-recoverable causes that compromise the animal’s quality of life. Nor may they undergo any type of mutilation or permanent body modification.
– Likewise, no vertebrate animal may be tied up or roaming without supervision, nor may dogs and cats be kept on a regular basis on terraces, balconies, , rooftops, storage rooms, basements, courtyards and the like, or in vehicles, nor may animals be kept tied to moving motor vehicles.
– Genetic selection that leads to serious alterations in the animal’s health is also eliminated, as is the commercial breeding of any species of animal by breeders who are not registered in the Register of Pet Breeders, which is also newly created, and dogs, cats and ferrets may not be sold in public or exhibited in shop windows. It is also forbidden to sell any type of animal on the Internet.
– Once the regulation comes into force, pets will be allowed access to means of transport, establishments and public spaces, in public and private establishments, hotel accommodation, restaurants and bars. They will also have access to public buildings and premises and to shelters, refuges, care centres for people at risk of social exclusion, homeless people or victims of gender violence.
– Another of the new features of this law is the fact that in order to own a dog, a training course must be taken, the validity of which is indefinite, and throughout the animal’s life its owner must have in force civil liability insurance for damage to third parties.
– On the other hand, a List of wild species that can be kept as pets will be created; a State Council for Animal Protection, which will be a new consultative body of the Ministry in which the autonomous communities, the FEMP and sectoral organisations will participate, and which will be advised by an -also new- Scientific and Technical Committee.
– Local councils will be obliged to collect stray and abandoned animals within 24 hours and house them in an animal protection centre, either their own or through agreements with private entities. Dutch farmers’ party wins big in provincial elections:
– A populist party founded only four years ago is set to emerge as the biggest party in Dutch provinicial elections for the upper house of parliament on Thursday, after riding a wave of protests by angry farmers. Security alert in Spain after an alleged cyberattack on the HLA Grupo hospitals network of the Asisa health insurance company:
– The health insurer Asisa insisted this Wednesday, March 15 that it could have been the victim of a data hacking in its hospital network. A hacker on a forum claimed to have extracted 45,000 records of people with their names and surnames, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses and their communications from the network, some of them apparently dating back to last October. In addition, the hackers also allegedly stole personal information on 1,600 doctors and healthcare professionals. This included their names, specialities, hospitals and codes, contact telephone numbers, and ID and NIF numbers.

St George’s Church Málaga: We are part of the Church of England in Spain covering the area from Torremolinos in the west to the outskirts of Nerja in the east and to the northern edge of Malaga province.
We have three worship centres, in Velez-Málaga, Málaga city and Salinas. Everyone is welcome to our Sunday services in English, and you can also contact us to enquire about baptisms, marriage blessings, funerals, and house blessings.
Father Louis, our Chaplain, is available for counsel and support, regardless of anyone’s beliefs or background. We aspire to be a welcoming and inclusive community, open to all people seeking faith and friendship.

Personally, I find this invasion of AI happening way too fast. This is brand new, untested technology, subject to many known abuses, as well as abuses we have not even thought of yet. Cyber crooks are a very creative lot. Also, you have to sign in with a Microsoft account. Be aware you will be opening a whole new pandora’s box of tracking. Everything you discuss with the chatbot will be permanently added to your Microsoft/Windows user profile. This is a clue as to why Microsoft is providing this to the public without charging.

Triana celebrates its patronal festival in honor of San José next Saturday, March 18: The activities will begin very early, at 8.00 a.m., with the classic Diana Floreada, followed at 12.00 p.m. by the solemn mass in honour of the town’s patron saint. At around 2 p.m. on the sports courts, those attending will be able to enjoy an aperitif, enlivened by musical performances, such as that of Son del Puerto at 3.30 p.m. At 6 p.m. the processional procession of San José and the Immaculate Virgin will take place from the church. To end the night, at 22.00 hours, there will be a performance by ‘Los Tirantitos’ and at 00.00 hours, a performance by DJ Antonio Hierro.

Benamocarra organizes the “Antonio Lorca Camacho” Hiking Days with the Sierra de Huétor route next Sunday, March 26:
The route, of medium difficulty, has a distance of 14 kilometers and will last approximately 5 hours. The departure will be at 07:15 hours from the Parque de Benamocarra.
Registration to participate in this activity, which requires good physical condition, is open and can be made at the Municipal Gymnasium or by calling 952 53 56 12, making payment through the account number ES16 2103 0243 91 0030002084 of the Unicaja bank. It is important to include your name and surname as payment concept.
Registration for residents of Benamocarra will begin on Thursday 16th March and for the rest of the participants will begin on Friday 17th March, until all places are filled. New Restaurant In Torrox Costa- Taberna Gurutze: Recommended
– This new restaurant/bar has opened at BLQ 89, in the location the Amsterdam Bar was previously. Just a few doors down from the Hong Kong II restaurant.
– The friendly staff is a mix of Euskara (Basque) and Romanian. They don’t speak much English, but seem to understand weak Castellano better than the locals.
– Upon entering, I scanned their bottled beer selection. To my amazement, in the center of all the typical beers, something special caught my eye, a bottle of Lagunitas IPA craft beer from Petaluma, California! At €3.50 it costs less here than at the brewery. I was offered a free tapa, and as usual for me, I requested “pescado” without looking at the tapa menu. This turned out to be 5 nicely deep-fried anchovies. Good beer and free tapas, a great start to the night.
– So, tho I wasn’t planning on eating out, I decided to look at the menu. More beef than pork on offer, plus a mix of typical dishes and northern spanish specialties. I was tempted by the 600gr T-bone at €23, but instead opted for the “beef rib” at €14, and asked for another IPA as I moved to a table on the terrace. To my surprise they brought another anchovy tapa when serving that second beer.
– I was soon presented with a platter, layered in a massive amount of food. The plate was half covered in a nice salad mix of baby multi-color lettuce and sweet tomatoes, tossed in a very light vinaigrette, and drizzled with sweet balsamic vinegar; the other side of the plate had 2 fried eggs. Covering all that was layer 2, a large pile of fries over the eggs, and atop the salad was 2 huge slices of grilled meat (beef ribs cut as a “beef chop” rather than the traditional ribs cut).

– The service was special by local standards. The waiter was attentive, checking with me several times during the meal, and the woman chef delivered my meal herself while the meat was still sizzling. No heat lamp delays here.
– With the check, I was presented with a double size shot of something similar to slivovitz or grappa, 50% I was told with a smile. I declined the refill, one was perfect. I left satisfied, with a full belly and a mild buzz.

Goldfish: I wonder if anyone can help me, please. I have a pond with goldfish in and went on holiday to Australia for three months, during which time the pond got polluted and all but one of the fish died. I have tried to find a pet shop around the Velez Malaga area but cannot find one that sells fish, the only place I could find was in the Carrefour complex in Rincon, but unfortunately the choice is very limited and the stock poor. Does anybody know where I could get any?

The Tronillos of Holy Week will once again parade through the streets of Nerja: {Translation}
– The Tronillos de Semana Santa will once again parade through the streets of Nerja. It will take place on Saturday 1st April and is open to children up to 12 years of age. The deadline for registration opens on Tuesday 14th until Friday 31st March.
– The Councillor for Culture of Nerja Town Council, Gema Laguna, stressed that “once again, for another year, the miniature representations of the thrones that are carried in processions during Holy Week will walk through the streets of Nerja carried by children from our town”.
– As in previous editions, the Tronillos will be handmade and the images may not exceed 70 centimetres in height. The maximum number of horquilleros will be 10 boys and girls, and the Tronillo will not exceed 25 participants, who must wear clothes in keeping with the celebration. – Lightship promises that its L1 trailer will be three times more aerodynamic than a traditional travel trailer and capable of offsetting its weight using an all-electric propulsion system based around an 80-kWh battery.
