Father’s Day 2023 is Sunday, March 19th: In Spain, Father’s Day falls on 19 March instead of the third Sunday of June as in many other countries. The reason for this is to make it coincide with Saint Joseph’s Day, the day that honours Joseph the husband of Mary and the adoptive father of Jesus. He is considered the ultimate example of a good father. Source: https://publicholidays.es/fathers-day/

When does the time change in March 2023?: The time change will take place in the early hours of Sunday, 26 March 2023, when the hands of the clock will have to be moved forward by one hour, so that 02:00 hours will become 03:00 hours (official peninsular time).

Cleaning day on the Chillar river in Nerja:
The Spanish Red Cross, in collaboration with the Nerja Town Council’s Department of the Environment, has launched the environmental awareness campaign “1m2 for rivers, lakes and reservoirs”, which will involve a day of cleaning up the Chillar River. It will take place on Saturday 18 March from 10am, starting at the mouth of the river, in the vicinity of the Chucho beach. Once the activity is over, the waste will be weighed and sorted for recycling. Sorry, that’s the best pic I found.

SPAIN
Details of the New Animal Welfare Law: {Translation, summary}
– The Animal Welfare Law, definitively approved this Thursday by the Congress of Deputies, affects all companion and wild animals in captivity, except hunting, guard and work dogs.
– The text prohibits the sale of animals in shops, the use of animals in circuses and nativity scenes, their exhibition in zoos, and the implementation of a new system of animal and breeder registers.
– In any case, vertebrates will have to live in “dignified” conditions that guarantee their welfare, rights and healthy development and, in particular, those living in cages, aquariums or terrariums will have to have adequate space.
– When educating or handling the animal, methods that cause suffering, anxiety or fear may not be used and it is forbidden to leave them inside closed vehicles, exposed to thermal or any other conditions that could endanger their lives, and each animal will have to undergo a periodic veterinary examination that will have to be recorded.
– In addition, each animal will have to be permanently located and identified and in the event of loss or theft, the authorities must be notified within 48 hours, as no animal may be left unattended for a maximum of three days, which in the case of dogs may not exceed 24 consecutive hours.
– The new law makes the owner responsible for any damage, harm or nuisance that they may cause to people, other animals or things, public spaces or the natural environment, and establishes a system of penalties.
– Similarly, the use of animals in public shows, artistic, tourist or advertising activities that cause them distress, pain or suffering is prohibited, although bullfighting shows are excluded.
– Also eliminated “in all cases” are mechanical attractions or fairground carousels and the use of wild animals in circuses, as well as using them for travelling or begging with them, except for homeless people, who may be accompanied by their animals.
– Animals may not be fed with viscera, carcasses and other offal of animals that have not passed the appropriate health controls, nor may animals be used as a lure, reward, prize, raffle or advertising promotion.
– It is also forbidden to fight dogs or to train or incite them to attack other animals or people.
– Likewise, it is expressly forbidden to sacrifice animals in any circumstance, for example, old age, illness, not finding an adopter or for economic reasons, except under justified euthanasia and controlled by a veterinarian only in the case of avoiding the animal’s suffering due to non-recoverable causes that compromise the animal’s quality of life. Nor may they undergo any type of mutilation or permanent body modification.
– Likewise, no vertebrate animal may be tied up or roaming without supervision, nor may dogs and cats be kept on a regular basis on terraces, balconies, , rooftops, storage rooms, basements, courtyards and the like, or in vehicles, nor may animals be kept tied to moving motor vehicles.
– Genetic selection that leads to serious alterations in the animal’s health is also eliminated, as is the commercial breeding of any species of animal by breeders who are not registered in the Register of Pet Breeders, which is also newly created, and dogs, cats and ferrets may not be sold in public or exhibited in shop windows. It is also forbidden to sell any type of animal on the Internet.
– Once the regulation comes into force, pets will be allowed access to means of transport, establishments and public spaces, in public and private establishments, hotel accommodation, restaurants and bars. They will also have access to public buildings and premises and to shelters, refuges, care centres for people at risk of social exclusion, homeless people or victims of gender violence.
– Another of the new features of this law is the fact that in order to own a dog, a training course must be taken, the validity of which is indefinite, and throughout the animal’s life its owner must have in force civil liability insurance for damage to third parties.
– On the other hand, a List of wild species that can be kept as pets will be created; a State Council for Animal Protection, which will be a new consultative body of the Ministry in which the autonomous communities, the FEMP and sectoral organisations will participate, and which will be advised by an -also new- Scientific and Technical Committee.
– Local councils will be obliged to collect stray and abandoned animals within 24 hours and house them in an animal protection centre, either their own or through agreements with private entities. Public animal protection centres will be obliged to sterilise dogs, cats and ferrets that arrive at these centres. Five arrested after wave of burglaries in the Axarquía:
– Guardia Civil officers arrested five people as allegedly being responsible for 14 burglaries in rural areas of the Axarquía last week. Operation Villabella-Alberquillas began at the end of 2021 after a series of incidents were reported to the police. Over the course of several months, the suspects allegedly committed up to 14 thefts in homes located in Canillas de Aceituno, Alcaucín, Periana and La Viñuela and in some cases the break-ins happened when the owners were at home. In one of the incidents the criminals stole firearms and ammunition. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/axarquia/five-arrested-after-wave-burglaries-the-axarquia-20230315081640-nt.html

The fire at the La Herradura campsite affected 25 pitches and 20 motorhomes: {Translation, summary}
– The fire registered on Wednesday afternoon inside the La Herradura campsite, in the municipality of Almuñécar (Granada), has affected some 25 plots and has caused damage to some twenty motorhomes that were on the premises.
– There were about 200 people who were evicted in a timely and preventive manner because of the flames that, from 19.30 hours, caused numerous calls from citizens. The fire was located at the rear of the campsite, in the area closest to the road.
– Although the causes of the fire have not been revealed, the firefighters have confirmed that the fire was completely extinguished, affecting some 25 plots inside the campsite. It also caused damage to some twenty motorhomes. Source, Spanish: https://andaluciainformacion.es/andalucia/1222545/el-incendio-en-el-camping-la-herradura-afecto-a-25-parcelas-y-20-autocaravanas/

They call a 2-day strike in the Alhambra for Holy Week: {Translation}
– The works committee of the Board of the Alhambra and the Generalife of Granada has announced the call for a two-day strike at the Nasrid monument during Holy Week, with protests to denounce the lack of personnel and the outsourcing of services.
– The strike, called for April 5 and 6, Wednesday and Holy Thursday, is endorsed by the monument’s staff, who in a general assembly held last December supported the committee for any actions that occurred in defence of their labour rights. CÁDIZ
Two arrested for squatting a house in Cádiz and stabbing its owner: {Translation, summary}
– A violent episode involving two squatters in a house in the La Paz neighbourhood and the owner of the property ended yesterday with the arrest of the first two as alleged perpetrators of a crime of squatting and another of serious threats to the owner of the house, whom they allegedly stabbed.
– Although there are conflicting versions, apparently it all began when the owner of this property, in which he supposedly did not reside but was fixing up for a daughter, was alerted by his neighbours about that his house had been occupied the night before by two men.
– The owner went to the house to throw them out. When he saw that the door was blocked and that they would not open it, he tried to gain access via the balcony with a ladder provided by his neighbours. The squatters’ reaction was to hit him and try to pull down the shutters, which ended up broken, but he was finally able to get inside.
– An argument then began that escalated into a violent aggression in which one of the squatters allegedly attacked him with a knife, causing wounds that left blood all over the house, although none of them were serious. Source, Spanish:

EUROPE
Dutch farmers’ party wins big in provincial elections:
– A populist party founded only four years ago is set to emerge as the biggest party in Dutch provinicial elections for the upper house of parliament on Thursday, after riding a wave of protests by angry farmers. The Boer-Burger Beweging (BBB), or Farmer-Citizen Movement, is projected to win 16 or 17 seats in the 75-seat upper house of the Dutch national parliament.
– The party gained popularity as Dutch farmers’ protests ramped up in recent years, also gaining some global support, including from former US President Donald Trump and other right-wing or populist figures. The farmers have been demonstrating against Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s ruling coalition’s plans to cut nitrogen emissions by slashing livestock numbers and possibly closing farms.
– “This is not the victory we had hoped for,” Rutte, who has served as prime minister since 2010, said after the initial forecasts. The co-ruling Christian Democratic party is seen as one of the biggest losers in this election, losing almost half of its seats. The party has traditionally represented many farmers and conservative rural voters.
– The Labor party (PvdA) and the Greens (GroenLinks) are likely to win 15 seats combined, according to the preliminary results. The results force Rutte’s coalition to choose to either work with a left-leaning leaning bloc with environmental ambitions, or with the BBB. The latter is aiming to soften policies regarding cutting nitrate pollution. Full article:

PRODUCT ALERT
Security alert in Spain after an alleged cyberattack on the HLA Grupo hospitals network of the Asisa health insurance company:
– The health insurer Asisa insisted this Wednesday, March 15 that it could have been the victim of a data hacking in its hospital network. A hacker on a forum claimed to have extracted 45,000 records of people with their names and surnames, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses and their communications from the network, some of them apparently dating back to last October. In addition, the hackers also allegedly stole personal information on 1,600 doctors and healthcare professionals. This included their names, specialities, hospitals and codes, contact telephone numbers, and ID and NIF numbers.
– Consulted by the Cronica Global news outlet, sources at Asisa assured that they had activated a security alert and were studying the matter. They could not confirm the data theft, nor its alleged scope. The company assured that it was working on reinforcing its security.
– HLA Grupo Hospitalario is part of the Asisa network with 18 hospitals and 17 medical centres. They are located in Barcelona, Lleida, Madrid, Zaragoza, Albacete, Alicante, Murcia, Almeria, Guadalajara, Huelva, Cadiz, Granada, and Malaga. TECH
6G telecommunications- How businesses are preparing for the new generation:
– Even though 5G telecommunications hasn’t yet reached the whole world, more and more businesses are already discussing and preparing for 6G, the sixth-generation mobile system standard. Although 6G availability is not expected until 2030, the telecommunications industry is working on short-term improvements that will lead to 5G-Advanced, the next evolutionary step before 6G.
– Major players in the industry are choosing diverse paths toward 6G. Huawei, for example, prefers to talk about 5.5G. “This cannot be skipped – it’s a prerequisite for 6G,” said Miguel Barroso, a 5G solution architect at Huawei. “With 5.5G, we are trying to multiply by a factor of 10 the 5G bandwidth target and attain 10 gigabytes. That will enable transmission of other types of content and much more powerful solutions. Another goal is to reduce network energy consumption by a factor of 10.” The Chinese company demonstrated how a logistics center can automate product inventory control using a chip similar to the alarm tags on today’s product boxes- “The chips are connected to a 5G network and automatically update inventories – no scanning is needed. We can even enable automatic payment through these passive, network-connected devices.”

St George’s Church Málaga: We are part of the Church of England in Spain covering the area from Torremolinos in the west to the outskirts of Nerja in the east and to the northern edge of Malaga province.
We have three worship centres, in Velez-Málaga, Málaga city and Salinas. Everyone is welcome to our Sunday services in English, and you can also contact us to enquire about baptisms, marriage blessings, funerals, and house blessings.
Father Louis, our Chaplain, is available for counsel and support, regardless of anyone’s beliefs or background. We aspire to be a welcoming and inclusive community, open to all people seeking faith and friendship.
If you can’t get to church, we live-stream our Sunday services on Facebook, and also gather on Zoom for an informal service on Wednesday mornings.
Sign up for our newsletter by emailing Father Louis at malagachaplain@gmail.com to receive login details, and news of other future events. We look forward to welcoming you and being of service.
