Ides of March – March 15, 2023: Beware the Ides of March, or at least, be aware of when “the Ides” even takes place. The word “Ides” is derived from the Latin word “idus,” which refers to the middle day of any month in the ancient Roman calendar. The Ides are specifically the fifteenth day of the months of March, May, July, or October, and the thirteenth day of the remaining months. The Ides were the designated days for settling debt each month in the Roman empire and generally included the seven days preceding the Ides for this purpose. No doubt debtors who could not pay their debts considered the Ides to be unlucky days as they were typically thrown into prison or forced into slavery. New Restaurant In Torrox Costa- Taberna Gurutze: Recommended
– This new restaurant/bar has opened at BLQ 89, in the location the Amsterdam Bar was previously. Just a few doors down from the Hong Kong II restaurant.
– The friendly staff is a mix of Euskara (Basque) and Romanian. They don’t speak much English, but seem to understand weak Castellano better than the locals.
– Upon entering, I scanned their bottled beer selection. To my amazement, in the center of all the typical beers, something special caught my eye, a bottle of Lagunitas IPA craft beer from Petaluma, California! At €3.50 it costs less here than at the brewery. I was offered a free tapa, and as usual for me, I requested “pescado” without looking at the tapa menu. This turned out to be 5 nicely deep-fried anchovies. Good beer and free tapas, a great start to the night.
– So, tho I wasn’t planning on eating out, I decided to look at the menu. More beef than pork on offer, plus a mix of typical dishes and northern spanish specialties. I was tempted by the 600gr T-bone at €23, but instead opted for the “beef rib” at €14, and asked for another IPA as I moved to a table on the terrace. To my surprise they brought another anchovy tapa when serving that second beer.
– I was soon presented with a platter, layered in a massive amount of food. The plate was half covered in a nice salad mix of baby multi-color lettuce and sweet tomatoes, tossed in a very light vinaigrette, and drizzled with sweet balsamic vinegar; the other side of the plate had 2 fried eggs. Covering all that was layer 2, a large pile of fries over the eggs, and atop the salad was 2 huge slices of grilled meat (beef ribs cut as a “beef chop” rather than the traditional ribs cut).
– The bread was 2 grilled buns, crunchy outside but soft and chewy inside. The olive oil they serve is the absolute lightest, mildest oil I have tasted in a very long time.
– The service was special by local standards. The waiter was attentive, checking with me several times during the meal, and the woman chef delivered my meal herself while the meat was still sizzling. No heat lamp delays here.
– With the check, I was presented with a double size shot of something similar to slivovitz or grappa, 50% I was told with a smile. I declined the refill, one was perfect. I left satisfied, with a full belly and a mild buzz.
– I highly recommend Taberna Gurutze. At a time when most of the paseo restaurants are rising prices and shrinking portions, this was a very pleasant find. Their FB page.

SPAIN
Brussels forces the Government to publish the list of the 100 largest beneficiaries of EU funds: {Translation, summary}
– The government of Spain will have to publish, as soon as possible and preferably before April, the list of the 100 largest beneficiaries of EU funds. This is a new requirement included by the European Commission in the Regulation to include the 20,000 million euros from RePowerEU, the line of funds to rapidly reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels, of which Spain will receive a further 2,600 million, but which affects the “Next Generation” funds (of which Spain will receive around 160,000 million). It will be required to update this data twice a year. Source, Spanish: https://www.vozpopuli.com/economia_y_finanzas/bruselas-obliga-publicar-lista-mayores-beneficiarios-fondos-ue.html

Housewife Revolt – The barrage of complaints from housewives that has turned justice upside down: {Translation, summary}
– The decision of the Court of First Instance and Preliminary Investigation number 3 of Velez-Malaga on 6 March to rule in favour of a housewife, obliging her ex-husband to pay her 200,000 euros for housework and childcare during their 25 years of marriage, has taken Spanish society by surprise.
Not so much because of the ruling, which is not the first of its kind in Spain, but because of the large amount of money that the former spouse will have to pay. The judge calculated the compensation at 204,624.86 euros, applying the Minimum Interprofessional Wage that prevailed in each of the twenty-five years that the marriage lasted, which ended in 2020. In addition, he must pay two compensatory pensions for their two daughters born during the union.
– The legal basis that has surrounded the whole process is article 1.438 of the Civil Code, which speaks of the support of the burdens of marriage. “The spouses shall contribute to the support of the burdens of marriage. In the absence of an agreement, they shall do so in proportion to their respective financial resources. The work for the house will be counted as a contribution to the expenses and will give the right to obtain a compensation that the judge will determine, in the absence of agreement, at the termination of the separation regime”.
– The law is quite clear, so the ruling should not have come as a surprise to public opinion. The housewives have justice on their side. The 200,000 will go to compensate for the unpaid domestic work that Ivana contributed to the marriage and for which she stopped working and, therefore, stopped earning a salary that would support her beyond the maintenance of her then-husband.
– The affected party can still appeal the judgement, in which the magistrate considered that, while her husband increased his wealth, Ivana was deprived of any possible career path in order to take care of her family and her home.
*Housewives start the rebellion*
– As mentioned above, the ruling in Ivana’s favour is not the first to be handed down in favour of a housewife in Spain, but it is a pioneer in establishing a sufficiently high amount to give the woman almost immediate financial support to help her out of her predicament.
– In February of this year, Judge Rodríguez González of the Provincial Court of Pontevedra set a woman’s compensation for housework for 33 years of marriage at 34,980 euros.
– In October 2022, the Provincial Court of León ordered a man to compensate his ex-wife with 150,000 euros for the same reasons as the previous cases mentioned, although this union lasted 22 years.
– This silent revolution of housewives is spreading throughout the country, and we will soon see many more rulings in favour of the plaintiffs, and many appeals no doubt, as society and the courts test the perception of “obligations in the home” having changed. It is now rare to see women leaving their professions when they tie the knot at the altar, but in our mothers’ and grandmothers’ generation this was the norm… Source, Spanish: https://www.vozpopuli.com/espana/amas-de-casa-indemnizaciones.html
ANDALUCIA
Why is the Junta borrowing another €600Million when they can’t even figure out how to spend the EU bailout funds they already have, AND, their ability to manage such large sums has been questioned by EU regulators?: {DigameXtra + Translated quotes}
– Since March 2021 Andalucia has borrowed 2,600 million euros by issuing public debt, without letting the citizens vote on the matter. These are loans the public will have to repay, with interest.
– The official answer to the question is financial foolishness: “With this issuance, the Andalusian Government assures that it is redoubling ‘its efforts to achieve a healthy and sustainable debt portfolio.’ The ten-year term will make it possible to continue flattening the maturity profile of the portfolio and extending the average life of the debt, making it more sustainable.” Sorry, that is crap. Unnecessary borrowing is NEVER in the public interest.
– What they are actually doing is ingratiating themselves to the international bankers. Here is what the Junta says. “This new issue of sustainable bonds inaugurates the financing program of the Junta de Andalucía in the markets for 2023, a program that will also include the agreement of bilateral loan operations with supranational financial entities and institutions such as the European Investment Bank or the Banco de Development of the Council of Europe.”
– The only explanation I can see is that the Junta officials doing this hope to land cushy banker jobs from these international banks when their terms in office expire. Reference, Spanish: https://sevilla.abc.es/economia/andalucia-lanza-nueva-emision-deuda-publica-600-20230313135336-nts.html
AXARQUIA
The irrigators of the Axarquía have 1 hm³ of additional water for irrigation after the improvement works in the Algarrobo treatment plant: {Translation, summary}
– Monday afternoon the expansion and improvement of the treatment of the new tertiaries of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) de Algarrobo began. The Andalusian Government has mobilized more than 718,000 euros to carry out this action that allows adding 1 hm³ of reclaimed water. Thanks to the improvements, the Axarquía will have more resources to irrigate farms and, at the same time, a greater guarantee of supply by reducing the amount of dammed water that must be allocated to farms. MALAGA
Benalmádena Cathouses:
– Following a proposal from the GAB animal welfare group in Benalmádena, the local council has installed 116 feral cat boxes in several areas of the town at a cost of 30,000 euros.
– GAB President Lucía López said that the group controls all the stray cats, sterilising and registering them in collaboration with the Department of Health. López said that “Benalmádena is the most advanced municipality in Malaga province in these matters”. She added that the aim of the boxes “is not to provide a place for people to abandon their cats, but to give shelter to street animals”. Controversy in the Bonoloto after matching 7 of the 8 numbers in two consecutive draws in 48 hours: “It is something that happens once every 200 years”: {Translation, summary}
– The Bonoloto draw this Saturday has generated great controversy because the numbers of the winning combination were practically identical to those of last Thursday . – The result of the Bonoloto draw this Saturday, March 11, was as follows: 8, 21, 23, 28, 40 and 47, with 26 as a complementary number and 7 as a refund. – On social networks, many users have been surprised by the coincidence and some have even asked that the draw be investigated in case an error had occurred. Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/noticia/5109097/0/polemica-bonoloto-combinacion-casi-identica-dos-idas-despues/

Bank stocks drop in Europe as biggest US bank failure in 15 years stirs jitters:
– Regulators on Friday closed Silicon Valley Bank as investors withdrew billions of dollars in a matter of hours, marking the second-largest U.S. bank failure behind the 2008 failure of Washington Mutual. They also announced Sunday that New York-based Signature Bank was being seized after it became the third-largest bank to fail in U.S. history.
– Bank stocks sagged in Europe and U.S. stock futures fell Monday ahead of the market’s open in New York, shaken by worries the biggest U.S. bank failure in nearly 15 years might have ripple effects around the world. Markets in Asia ended mixed after assurances by U.S. officials that they were taking steps to protect depositors at Silicon Valley Bank, or SVB.
– The STOXX Banks index of 21 major European lenders was off 3.8% on Monday, with some members seeing intraday drops in double digits before recovering. Germany’s Commzerbank was down 9.2%, and Spain’s Banco de Sabadell down 9.3% in noontime trading in Europe. Tiger Woods Launches Blistering Response After Sexual Assault Allegations- Just a ‘Jilted Ex’:
– “Ms. Herman is a not a victim of sexual assault or abuse…,” Woods’s legal filings read. “Rather, Ms. Herman is a jilted ex-girlfriend who wants to publicly litigate specious claims in court, rather than honor her commitment to arbitrate disputes in a confidential arbitration proceeding.”
– Woods, the 47-year-old golfing phenom, has found himself in another ugly legal battle involving a former paramour — and could be on the hook for an exorbitant sum of money.
– Since his highly publicized and controversial breakup with the mother of his children, Elin Nordegren, Woods has been bouncing around the dating circuit. That list of love interests included Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn and, most recently, Erica Herman. While the Vonn breakup appeared to largely be amicable, the same cannot be said about the breakup with Herman.
– Herman is taking Woods to court over a non-disclosure agreement that she wants annulled. She filed the papers last week. Herman has cited the Speak Out Act — which allows NDA’s to be voided if there is a case of sexual assault — to null the NDA she had signed with Woods when they began dating. The two had been publicly linked since 2017.
– According to the Post, this entire ordeal has gotten very nasty, very quickly. Not only is Herman seeking for the NDA to be voided, but she is also seeking a whopping $30 million from Woods’s estate. Worth noting, however, is that while Herman has indicated that there are, in fact, allegations of sexual abuse, nothing specific has been noted in court documents obtained by outlets.
– Herman has apparently laid claim to being “tricked” by Woods to vacate their domicile when the two broke up. (Woods owned the property.) According to Herman, she had an “oral tenancy agreement” with Woods that should have guaranteed her another five years of living in Woods’s Florida mansion.
– Woods and his legal team have denied that any such verbal agreement was in place.
