EU Covid Recovery Funds Being Used To Make Improvements To 2 Pyrenees Ski Resorts Claim Protesters:
– The EU’s 724 billion-euro ($763-billion) COVID-19 recovery program is supposed to support member states to “build a greener, more digital and more resilient future,” with stringent rules on impacting biodiversity, water use and carbon emissions. The activists argue the union of the resorts of Astún-Candanchú and Formigal with an 8-kilometer-long cable car link violates these conditions. The plan was approved by Spain’s tourism ministry in December.
– “This is a space of enormous environmental quality, and serves as a green corridor for the passage of animal populations such as the bearded vulture or other flora and fauna characteristic of the area,” said Marina Gros, spokesperson for Ecologists in Action. Gros criticized the “opacity” of the Aragon regional government in its management of pandemic recovery funds, and alleged hypocrisy on the part of Spain’s central government for approving the project, given its recent trumpeting of its green credentials. “These funds supposedly for sustainable tourism are being dedicated more than 80% to only four projects (in Aragon) based on snow-based tourism,” she said. Critics argue that skiing is neither financially nor environmentally sustainable in the rapidly warming mountain range. ANDALUCIA

Andalusian doctors will take to the streets on April 12: {Translation}
– The situation of primary care is “unsustainable” and, for this reason, Andalucia’s doctors have announced the call for a strike and a demonstration on Wednesday 12 April, after Easter, which will leave from the Palacio de San Telmo in Seville, the headquarters of the Andalucia regional government.
– The Andalusian Medical Union (SMA) claims that the government of Juanma Moreno “has not kept its word” after “two months ago” both parties reached an agreement to limit the schedules of primary care physicians. The agreement, signed on 25 January, meant that family doctors’ schedules would not exceed 35 patients per day and paediatricians’ 25.
– The president of the SMA, Rafael Carrasco, told journalists during the rally held outside the headquarters of the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) in Seville that the agreement meant “putting aside the protests” they had been holding in recent months, an agreement that at the time “was not the best possible” but which the doctors considered to be “sufficient”.
– In addition, from the SMA have denounced that the newly opened Military Hospital of Seville, which is ‘renamed’ as Hospital Doctor Muñoz Cariñanos, will start to work “without its own staff”, as all the doctors come from the Hospital Virgen del Rocío.
– The president of the Junta, Juanma Moreno, precisely at the “full inauguration” of the hospital, has insisted that his government has made an “enormous effort” to invest in order to guarantee public health.
– The leader of the opposition, the socialist Juan Espadas, during his participation this Monday in the programme Acento Andaluz, on 7TV Andalucia, said that “there is a serious management problem” of the Junta after “despite the fact that there is greater investment, healthcare is worse than ever”.
– Espadas has also asked Moreno to explain in the Andalucia Parliament the “hand-picked contracts” awarded by his government to private healthcare for two years.
– Also, from the left, both IU and Más País, have called on citizens to “stop the offensive” of Juanma Moreno’s PP against Andalusian public health. They believe that “public health is being deliberately undermined”. Source, Spanish: https://andaluciainformacion.es/andalucia/1226173/los-medicos-andaluces-se-echaran-a-la-calle-el-12-de-abril/

MALAGA

Malaga registers its second warmest winter in the last 60 years + Easter forecast: {Translation}
– Malaga has recorded, from a thermal point of view, the second warmest winter since 1961, with an average temperature of 11.7 degrees, which represents an anomaly of 1.5 degrees more than the previous one. And this is due, in the words of the director of the Malaga Meteorological Centre (Aemet), Jesús Riesco, to the fact that the thermometers kept rising, especially during the month of December, when the Costa del Sol celebrated Christmas with sunny skies and a maximum of 23 degrees.
– The trend will be similar in the coming months. The Aemet forecasts that this spring will be “warmer than normal”. “There are signs that throughout the peninsula, and also in southern Spain, the temperature values will be higher than usual. If we divide all the springs, this one would be in the warmest tercile,” the meteorologist explains.
*The meteorological drought persists*
– Despite the fact that the season has been slightly wet in the province of Malaga, with an average of 211 litres per square metre, the meteorological drought continues. The Aemet is not expecting any rain over the next few days.
– As for whether or not it will rain next Easter, the head of the Aemet stresses that “we are still far away” to establish a reliable forecast, but it is possible to anticipate that there could be “much less rainfall than normal”. “This does not mean that it will rain, but the probability is lower. During the first part of next week, which will include Friday of Dolores, it is likely that it will not rain at all, but for the second part of the week things could change,” he said.
*The week will end with more heat*
– After the drop in temperatures that the thermometers have marked this Monday, with highs of 20 degrees, it is expected, again, warmer. For Tuesday, the forecast is for low cloud intervals and morning mist on the Mediterranean coast, with fog banks not ruled out. Winds will be easterly in the Strait of Gibraltar and light in the rest. This will mean that temperatures in the province will remain at around 20 degrees Celsius. Antequera will be the warmest point with 23.
– On Wednesday, the skies are expected to be clear and the winds could turn west, which will cause a slight rise in temperatures. In Antequera the thermometers could reach 25 degrees and 23 in Ronda. On Thursday, the map remains unchanged, with sunshine throughout the territory and rising maximum temperatures. Malaga city is expected to reach 27 degrees and Marbella 26.
– The start of the weekend is expected to be hot, with almost 30 degrees in the capital of Malaga during the central hours of the day, 28 in Velez-Malaga and 26 in Marbella. The heat will ease a little on Saturday, but the thermometers will continue to register high temperatures for the beginning of spring. In Malaga, 250 donations are needed every day to be able to maintain sufficient stock and cover all the demand from hospitals, “we find ourselves in an extraordinary scenario, with reserve levels that have not been recorded for five years, with ‘stocks only for one day’.”

New Caminito del Rey gorge walk train service is now a reality:
– The new Caminito del Rey train service from Malaga to El Chorro is now a reality. Starting from today (Monday, 20 March), several times a day, there will be an extension of the C2 suburban line from Álora, which will multiply the number of options to visit the famous gorge walk from Malaga. Olive season in Malaga province on course to be worst this century:
– As the harvest enters its final stages, according to the latest data published by Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food up to February, the current harvest has produced 30,000 tonnes of oil in the province, 48 per cent down on the 2021-2022 season when 57,000 tonnes of oil were produced, a season already considered by the sector to be “very bad”. There are few olives still to be harvested, so there is little hope that the figure will improve. A drought crisis which has worsened in recent years means that the trees have increasingly smaller fruit.
– Benito Avilés, president of the cooperative in Campillos said that there is “concern” in the sector. “It is the worst harvest in history, without a doubt. And that’s not just here in Campillos. Talking to people in Archidona, the feeling and the reality are the same,” he pointed out. Avilés issued another warning related to the drought. Unless there is abundant rainfall in spring, the next harvest will be “catastrophic” he warned. “We have seen several very bad years in a row. No more rain and another summer like the one we had last year will be the last straw.” Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/olive-season-malaga-province-course-worst-this-20230320150403-nt.html

HUELVA

Berry Bad News: {Translation, summary}
– The Association of Strawberry Producers and Exporters of Huelva, Freshuelva, has calculated that, at the halfway point of the strawberry campaign, the production is 30% lower than that registered on the same date last season. Manager of Freshuelva, Rafael Domínguez, has assured that this season has been “very difficult” as “the excessive increase in input prices or the new phytosanitary regulations, together with weather conditions that have hit us negatively since the beginning of the season”.
– Domínguez recalled “the problems” during planting due to “the excessive heat in October”, which even forced 20% of the plants to be replanted, which “turned into excessive cold in January and February”, causing “a significant drop in production and a scarce supply of strawberry in the markets”.
– The manager of Freshuelva regretted that, in addition, after the rains in December, “no new rains have been recorded”, so “the cuts in water allowed for irrigation persist”, which has the sector “very worried” because “it is also having a very negative effect on production, which will certainly be lower than last season”.
– Raspberry, meanwhile, is 40% into its spring season, on which growers “are pinning all their hopes” because the autumn season “recorded very negative figures mainly as a consequence of fierce competition from third countries such as Morocco”.
– As far as bilberry is concerned, Freshuelva forecasts that this season’s bilberry crop will be 25% less than expected due, “firstly, to the delay in the arrival of low temperatures which have not allowed sufficient cold hours to accumulate”. He also recalled that in November, December and January, the lowest temperatures have been above average for these dates. In addition, the cold weather in the last weeks of February and early March “has reduced calibres”.
– In the same way, it is added that the water currently available for irrigation “does not have optimum quality parameters for the good development of the crop”. “We are talking about low quality water with a high concentration of salts, which in some areas has tripled”, it concluded. HEALTH

German Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach reverses position, now wants to help people with the long-term consequences of a COVID-19 infection or vaccination injuries:
– He aims to make sure vaccination damage is formally recognized more quickly, and his ministry is planning research on the consequences of Long Covid and Post-Vac Syndrome to help those affected.
– The Paul Ehrlich Institute, the German Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedical Drugs, has registered 333,492 cases of suspected harmful vaccination side effects and 50,833 suspected cases of serious side effects since the start of the vaccination campaign: a reporting rate of 1.78 per 1,000 vaccine doses.
– Tobias Ulbrich’s law firm in Dusseldorf has been specializing in vaccination injuries and their consequences. The lawyer represents 750 individuals and has filed 130 lawsuits against BioNTech and Moderna. Ulbrich complains that the German government provided insufficient information to the public about the side effects and deliberately downplayed them. “We have a federal minister who for quite some time has dubbed vaccination as free of side effects,” Ulrich tells DW, referring to Lauterbach. TECH

2 WINDOWS 11 ALERTS- Beware of BAD UPDATE (KB5023706), slowing SSD speeds + Notepad problem:
– Microsoft may have a problem on its hands — the latest Windows 11 update doesn’t seem to be working as intended. According to various user reports, the update drastically slows SSD speeds, in some cases even cutting them in half! (This happened to me, the fix below worked. -Ed.) If you’ve noticed that your PC is loading slowly or programs aren’t running as quickly as you’d hoped, you might be affected by this problem.
– Poor performance can be explained in any number of ways, but the users are seeing drops specifically in SSD speeds, and all of this seems to have started only once they’ve installed the update. The drops are huge, and even the best NVMe SSDs can’t seem to keep up after the latest patch. In fact, the better the SSD the worse the problem appears to be.
– It’s almost certain that it will be fixed if the update really is to blame, but until then, the only fix is to uninstall the latest patch and hold off on installing it again until it’s proven to work well.
– Uninstalling the update is easy. Type in Windows Update Settings into the search bar, then click on View Update History. Click on the latest update you’ve installed (KB5023706) and uninstall it. (Then go to Windows Updates, under the heading “More Options” click “Pause Updates” and choose to pause for 4 or 5 weeks.) This is more of a bandaid than a permanent solution, but it should help until Microsoft comes out with an official fix. Full article: https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/windows-11-update-affects-ssd-speeds/
– NOTEPAD FREEZES: {Editor}
– Some Win 11 users are reporting on tech forums that Notepad is locking up while in use. The problem seems to have something to do with changing from the default settings; changing fonts, or selecting the dark theme, in Notepad settings, in most cases. A fix for some, including me, was to return to the default Notepad settings, and then running “sfc /scannow scan” from the command line in admin mode to repair broken files. When scan is finished, restart.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLEGENCE (AI)

As if ChatGPT’s ‘woke’ chatbots weren’t bad enough, here comes a Communist chatbot from China named Ernie:
– On March 16, Robin Li, Baidu’s cofounder and CEO, took the stage in Beijing to showcase the company’s new large language model, Ernie Bot. Accompanied by art created by Baidu’s image-making AI, he showed examples of what the chatbot can do, including solve math questions, write marketing copy, answer questions about Chinese literature, and generate multimedia responses.
– At the launch, Li compared Baidu to big tech firms in the West. “I can say Baidu is the first one among international tech giants to release [a ChatGPT alternative developed internally]. Microsoft just uses OpenAI access. Google, Meta, Amazon— none of these has released a product of the same kind and at the same level,” he said.
