Kitty Harri’s Sculpture Garden – Opening by appointment- June 21st: The Garden will be opening on Sunday June 21st, however with some limitations on numbers and, of course, distancing. Please note that for the time being the Garden may NOT BE OPEN regularly on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month, as previously.
Please contact us to make an appointment and please accept our apologies if we have to limit the duration of your visit in order to permit others to enter, but this will be dependent on the level of enquiries.
Private visits on weekdays are encouraged as this will minimise interaction with others and you will likely have the Garden to yourselves.
For those who have forgotten about us through the recent ‘quiet period’, there are many, many sculptures by a wide variety of international artists set within a lush tropical garden and there is usually live Baroque Chamber Music to add to your enjoyment.
There are many places to sit, relax and appreciate the views inside and out.
Only 20 minutes from Almuñécar. Directions on the website.
We hope to see you again soon.

Bioparc in Fuengirola: Now open, but it has considerably reduced the number of people allowed in at a time.
Even so, not all the animals were as pleased to see visitors again as Julieta. Species such as chimpanzees, orangutans, and other apes and primates at the Bioparc, tend to be more interested in what visitors are doing, while others such as Rokan, the male Sumatran tiger, didn’t seem nearly as happy about seeing new faces after so many weeks with no humans threatening his territory. https://www.bioparcfuengirola.es/ http://www.surinenglish.com/lifestyle/202006/11/julieta-pleased-visitors-again-20200612100529-v.html
Does anyone know for sure if Jack’s Bar in Torrox is still open?: Apparently, after posting this cryptic FB message, Jack’s Bar in Torrox Costa may have closed down. “We just want to say till we meet again it was a blast to the wonderful people we met and know to this day take care God bless we wish everyone the best in the future Regards jacks,” Jack’s FB post said. Which was soon followed by the message, “It ant over yet.” Confusing?
However their terrace has been cleared and their sign is down. A message sent to Jack’s asking for clarification went unanswered. Anyone know what the situation is?

Telephone appointments to continue at public health centres: A visit to the doctor at the local public health centre isn’t going be the same as it was before the pandemic. The Andalusian health service, SAS, has decided to keep in place the initial telephone filter when a patient requests an appointment. This was introduced during the coronavirus outbreak. Staff at the district health centres will be the ones to decide if a patient needs to physically come into the surgery or if a solution can be given over the phone. Episode of UK sitcom Fawlty Towers pulled over racist slurs: One of the most memorable episodes of one of the most popular British sitcoms of all-time has been withdrawn from a U.K. streaming service because of numerous racial slurs.
The removal of the “Don’t mention the war” episode by UKTV follows the decision by HBO Max to temporarily remove the 1939 civil war epic “Gone With The Wind” because of its “racial depictions.”
The BBC has also withdrawn its popular sketch show “Little Britain” because “times have changed” since the comedy first aired in the early 2000s. The series has come under fire because of the use of blackface in some sketches. Full story: https://apnews.com/1bb71fee8fcdc551af3da67e483d7df4
Spain’s Mercadona Adds New “Pull- Don’t Push” Rule to Shopping: The latest rule requires shopping trolleys “to be turned around – in reverse – at the till,” pulling it along behind you. “This measure will make it easier for customers to put their goods safely in the till area to be scanned by the cashier, whilst helping to maintain an adequate distance between the customer in front,” said Mercadona. Government Tells Brits Not to Take Hand Luggage on Flights: The UK government has released new guidance this morning for Brits looking to travel abroad in the coming months, which advises all travellers should wear masks and check in suitcases.
The new rules will mean that passengers will not be allowed to take hand luggage on board their flight. Most airlines charge additional fees for putting luggage in the hold. At this point in time, it is unclear whether these fees will be waived. Full story: https://www.euroweeklynews.com/2020/06/11/breaking-government-tells-brits-not-to-take-hand-luggage-on-flights/

Spanish Police Shut Down Pirate IPTV Operation With Two Million Subscribers: With help from Europol and law enforcement in Canada, the US and several European countries, 11 suspects were arrested. The authorities also confiscated property worth nearly €5 million while another €1.1 in bank assets were frozen.
In recent years, unlicensed TV subscriptions have been flourishing, with hundreds of vendors offering virtually any channel imaginable for a small monthly fee.
This is seen as a major threat by copyright holders and law enforcement authorities are also taking the matter seriously. That became apparent again today, as law enforcement authorities announced one of the largest IPTV busts in history.
In an operation led by Spain’s National Police, law enforcement agencies across Europe claim to have “switched off” a massive pirate IPTV operation. The investigation, which started last year, resulted in 15 house searches and 11 people – including the suspected leader – were arrested.
As is often the case, authorities haven’t named the prime suspects or connected services.
With many IPTV services using similar names things can get confusing but Rapid IPTV is certainly a large player. Also, several of Rapid IPTV’s services were indeed shut off about a week ago when the raids were carried out. Microsoft & Amazon Help Rioters Avoid Identification, ban police face recognition tools sales as Big Tech reacts to protests: The announcement came a day after rival Amazon.com Inc declared it was pausing police use of its “Rekognition” service for a year, while International Business Machines Corp also said this week it no longer is generally offering the software and that technology should not promote racial injustice. (So now capturing arsonists and looters is “racial injustice”? These tech companies are not nearly as generous if they think you are pirating their software! -Ed.)

Statues fall as UK reexamines its past: EDWARD COLSTON- The toppling of a statue of the 17th-century slave trader in the port city of Bristol on Sunday reignited debate in Britain about who deserves a permanent public memorial. HENRY DUNDAS- Campaigners want his statue removed from atop its column in Edinburgh’s St. Andrew Square. There are also calls to rename Dundas Street, a major thoroughfare in the Canadian city of Toronto. The late 18th-century Scottish politician was responsible for delaying Britain’s abolition of the slave trade by 15 years until 1807. ROBERT MILLIGAN- Authorities in London this week removed a statue of Milligan, an 18th-century merchant, who owned two sugar plantations in Jamaica with more than 500 slaves, from its perch in the city’s docklands. ROBERT BADEN-POWELL- Officials plan to remove a statue of the founder of the Scouts movement from the quayside in Poole, southern England, out of concern it may be a target for protesters. Like many Englishmen of his time, Baden-Powell held racist views. He also expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler. WILLIAM GLADSTONE- Some have called for the removal of statues of, the reforming 19th-century prime minister whose father was one of the biggest slave-owners in the British West Indies.

EU urges states to reopen domestic borders from Monday: The European Union on Thursday urged all it’s member countries to start lifting travel restrictions on their common borders from next week, saying that the closures they introduced to tackle the coronavirus do little to limit its spread.
The EU’s executive arm, the European Commission, wants Europe’s ID check-free travel area to be up and running again by the end of June. Once that has happened, a ban on nonessential travel to the continent can also gradually be eased. Full story: https://apnews.com/e14ee85901a1eeb26ef1b5d1bb46cae4
This is the Marko System, the Spanish proposal for the new normality to be installed in festivals: Josan Serrano, founding partner and director of Montgorock Xàbia Festival, which a few weeks ago, in the midst of chaos, presented the Marko System, a new festival format divided by 150-square-meter plots with capacity for 50 people seeking institutional endorsement.
Serrano has patented a structure that would have access temperature controls, an individual cleaning and disinfection system, and access control by plots. The toilets would be placed in a row on both sides of the enclosure and each area would be assigned a number of services. In addition, a shared bar service would be offered every four plots without physical contact with the other spaces. And to reduce the risk, its author assures that even the drinks would be covered “as in Starbucks”. Quantum ‘fifth state of matter’ observed in space for first time: Scientists have observed the fifth state of matter in space for the first time, offering unprecedented insight that could help solve some of the quantum universe’s most intractable conundrums, research showed Thursday. Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) — the existence of which was predicted by Albert Einstein and Indian mathematician Satyendra Nath Bose almost a century ago — are formed when atoms of certain elements are cooled to near absolute zero (0 Kelvin, minus 273.15 Celsius). On Thursday a team of NASA scientists unveiled the first results from BEC experiments aboard the International Space Station, where particles can be manipulated free from Earthly constraints. Pet ID Suggestion From Silvia and Mario, the dog handlers: Hello readers of Digamextra, yesterday I have seen the photo of a lost puppy, as a dog sitter, I want to recommend to people who have pets, cats and / or dogs, in addition to the vet putting the chip on them, it is VERY IMPORTANT that the owners make him a nameplate, which is attached to the collar, with his phone and the name of the animal. From experience, I have seen or have been called by desperate people looking for their pets, if they have the identification badge, the person who finds it, can immediately call the owner, but in the event that they only have the chip. It is more complicated, since the person who found this pet, has to go to a veterinarian so that they can pass the reader and then locate the owner, I have seen cases of dogs that have returned them after many months, because people They found them, they didn’t have a vet nearby, and they spent months caring for the pet until they went to a vet. PLEASE!!!! If you love your pet, put the visible identification tag on the collar!
Silvia, El Morche, silviacaminante @ gmail . com (I got mine from the jewelry booth on the Torrox Costa Paseo Maritimo. Not sure if they have reopened. Custom engraved, double sided, “bone shaped” dogtag with H/D ring to attach tag to collar in 5mins for €8. -Ed.)

Scandal over Covid-19 deaths at Madrid nursing homes sparks fierce political row: Regional and central government officials have warned of legal consequence after EL PAÍS revealed that internal protocols excluded some coronavirus patients from hospital admission. Madrid premier Díaz Ayuso and her health chief, Enrique Ruiz Escudero, have said in public that there were no orders to exclude certain dependents and people with disabilities from hospital admission, and that the document that reached care homes was a draft sent by mistake.
But several internal emails seen by EL PAÍS show that a senior official at the regional health department, Carlos Mur de Víu, signed the triage protocols and had them sent to 475 residences in the region. These guidelines, which were used by hospitals and residences to refuse the transfer of certain patients; children and grandchildren of these patients say that regional authorities sacrificed their relatives. Consumer Tech Prices On The Rise: With the shipping routes shut by C-19 travel restrictions, tech items are in short supply. Most of the computers and parts listed for sale on Amazon are “out of stock”. With fewer customers, possibly higher cost of goods sold, and all the fixed costs of complying with social distancing rules, such consumer-facing businesses will be lucky if they can keep from burning through cash — unless they raise their prices substantially. Data services are under a greater than normal use as people spend more time working and entertaining themselves online. Hundreds of thousands of Sky customers can expect to be hit with price hikes of up to £72 for broadband and TV from August. Up to 30,000 furloughed workers in Spain will have to return money after government blunder: The banks are reportedly “indignant” at having to go from client to client demanding the return of hundreds of euros.
Banks are already warning furloughed workers who have enough money on their account that they are going to deduct the difference between what was transferred on behalf of the SEPE and what they were actually entitled to. El Confidential’s financial sources say this could affect 20,000-30,000 people. The institutions are said to be concerned because the returns could be between €500 and €1,000 on average, and many may have already spent the money. Vetiver Spain in Sayalonga
Are you having soil erosion issues after all the recent rain?
Vetiver is the perfect solution with the 3 – 4 metre root system.
The plant is non invasive, grows rapidly and once established it needs very little water.
We are finally open again for business. We are still not permitted to have visitors at our nursery but we can ship plants via post or we can deliver locally.
Our first day of shipping was Monday and we shipped 2,000 plants to various locations in Spain, Portugal, and Hungary.
We have plenty of Vetiver in stock. Right now the soil is nice and damp and the weather is starting to heat up so it is the perfect time to plant.
We also have Lemon Grass, Moringa Seedlings and Organic Moringa Powder.
Moringa, also known as the “Miracle Tree”, has many nutritional and health benefits. If you have ever been to a Thai Restaurant you have probably had Lemon Grass.
Lemon Grass grows easily and quickly. Take a look at our website or go directly to the two links below. If you have any questions please contact us either by email or phone.

EU finance ministers examine recovery plan amid deep divisions: European Union finance ministers reviewed the EU’s 750 billion euro plan for post-pandemic recovery on Tuesday ahead of what will be fractious negotiations over who should get the cash and even over the legality of borrowing to offer grants. This, according to Finland, the Netherlands, Austria, Denmark and Sweden, could violate the principle that the EU cannot incur debt and that its EU budget cannot run a deficit. Some also argue that, since all countries can borrow cheaply on the market, there is no need for EU grants at all. Cheap loans would be enough, they say.

In a statement, it has been reported that an increasing number of establishments in different sectors of activity, with the excuse that they have an increase in their expenses as a result of adopting the measures dictated by the Government, are applying what they call surcharge, rate or supplement. CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures: Updated in Spain at 17h on Sunday 7 June
The latest official figures released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Sunday 7 June (link below) show a total of 27,136 deaths from Coronavirus in Spain – an increase of 1 in the past 24 hours. The figures also state there have been 72 deaths in the past 7 days.
Saturday’s figures had shown an increase of 1 death in 24 hours and 67 deaths over 7 days. Friday had been an increase of 1 death in 24 hours and 52 deaths over 7 days.
The current peak of recorded deaths related to Coronavirus in a 24-hour period in Spain was on 2 April, when 950 deaths were registered.
The official figure released by the Health Ministry on Sunday 7 June for the total number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus only through a PCR test is now 241,550 – an increase of 102 over Saturday.
Out of the 102 new confirmed cases, 49 are in Madrid, 10 in Catalonia and 11 in Aragón.
Saturday’s figures for the increase of infections only through PCR testing had been 164 over Friday. Friday’s comparative figure had been 177 over Thursday. Thursday had been 195.
The current peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period in Spain was on 31 March, when 9,222 new cases were registered (including from PCR and antibody).
There has been recent confusion regarding the Coronavirus mortality figures released by Spain’s central Health Ministry, as well as on-going discrepancies with the data released by some of the country’s regional health authorities.

Facemasks Forever?: Face masks are here to stay. Not only are they obligatory in Spain at the moment, while the state of alarm emergency measures are still in place, but they will also continue to be in the future, in the so-called “new normality,” until the government declares the coronavirus crisis to be completely over.
A draft decree for the new normality, which the executive is currently debating with Spain’s regions and is due to be approved on Tuesday by the Cabinet, includes obligatory use of masks in closed public spaces where a safe distance of 1.5-2 meters cannot be observed, and also fines of up to €100 for people who are not wearing them. The decree also leaves open the possibility of regulating their use in the open air.
There are a ton of other restrictions that will linger on after the State of Alarm. Read all about them here: https://english.elpais.com/society/2020-06-06/face-masks-will-still-be-obligatory-in-spain-after-the-state-of-alarm.html
‘Time for preparation, not celebration’: Senior WHO official warns coronavirus is not defeated and Europe must brace for a deadly second wave this winter: Dr Hans Kluge, the European director for the World Health Organisation, has claimed that the pandemic is not over and countries should use the next few months ‘for preparation, not celebration’. England’s chief medical officer, Professor Chris Whitty, and other experts have warned that a second wave could be deadlier than the first, citing evidence of the 1918-20 Spanish Flu pandemic. Six men dressed as police tie up family and rob luxury mansion in Mijas Costa: The assailants reportedly spoke Spanish, worked in an organised manner and left with several pieces of jewellery and other objects worth 300,000 euros. Six individuals dressed as police officers tied up the property’s two occupants and gagged them for a long period of time in order to search the house for valuables without interruption.
A similar incident, a few days earlier, is being investigated by the National Police in Marbella. In this case, the assailants didn’t dress as police officers but did tie the occupant’s hands while they searched the property. They made off with several items of value, including two high-end watches. Full story: http://www.surinenglish.com/local/202006/05/dressed-police-family-luxury-20200605094633-v.html

Andalusian provinces of Málaga and Granada have been granted permission to move to Phase 3 with the rest of the region: Under the deescalation plan, each stage must be in place for a minimum of two weeks before a region can move to the next phase. This rule has been adhered to with the exception of the Andalusian provinces of Málaga and Granada, which have been granted permission to move to Phase 3 with the rest of the region, despite having only been in Phase 2 for a week. Differences between Phase 2 and Phase 3 (Short Version): The main differences between Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the coronavirus deescalation plan are the limits put on capacity at restaurants, libraries and other public-facing facilities. For example, sidewalk cafes can open at 50% capacity under Phase 2, and at 75% under the latter. The number of people allowed in social gatherings is also higher, 20 compared to 15. Bars are also allowed to reopen under Phase 3, but with safety measures in place. Another important difference is that regional authorities assume control of the deescalation process during this stage, and can decide how long this last phase should last. (See the next story for a more comprehensive explanation of the Rules changes).

A quarter of Venice is submerged under floodwaters as city is hit by near-record tides just two days after Italy reopened to tourists: The lagoon city’s iconic St Mark’s Square was pictured underwater on Thursday night, as a handful of visitors splashed about in the rain.
The flooding comes just two days after Italy reopened its borders to tourists in an attempt to salvage its summer season following coronavirus lockdown.
It also comes after Venice was hit by flooding three times last year – twice in November and once in December – causing billions in damage. Photo:NurPhoto/PA Images. Full story: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8391945/Quarter-Venice-flooded-just-two-days-Italy-reopened-tourists.html

U-Turn, Spain won’t be opening up land borders with France and Portugal until July 1st: Spain will reopen its land borders with France and Portugal on July 1, the tourism ministry said Thursday, reversing an earlier statement by the minister suggesting it would be earlier.
The clarification was issued after Tourism Minister Reyes Maroto told a foreign press briefing that the restrictions on cross-border movement with France and Portugal would be lifted on June 22nd. Premier League approves rule changes for rest of season: The Premier League has approved a temporary rule change to allow teams to make up to five substitutions when action resumes on June 17. “For the remainder of the 2019/20 season, the number of substitutes that can be used during a match will increase from three to five players,” a statement on Thursday said.
The Premier League also announced that the number of players allowed in the match day squad and on the bench will be increased from seven players to nine.
The rule changes were approved following an amendment last week by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the body responsible for the laws of the game, intended to ease fixture congestion and allow players enough time to recover between matches taking place in condensed periods at the height of summer, “both of which could have impacts on player welfare.” Source: https://www.laprensalatina.com/premier-league-approves-5-subs-for-rest-of-season/
Asteroid possibly as big as Empire State Building to zoom past Earth: NASA is monitoring an asteroid that may be as large as the Empire State Building, expected to pass Earth on Saturday, June 6.

The asteroid may seem daunting, but it will pass Earth at a safe distance, a representative for JPL told CBS News. Source: https://wtop.com/the-space-place/2020/06/asteroid-possibly-as-big-as-empire-state-building-to-zoom-past-earth/
France to transform surplus wine into hand sanitiser: French winemakers will transform wine that went unsold during the country’s two-month coronavirus lockdown into hand sanitiser and ethanol to make room for the next harvest, a farming agency said on Thursday. The Spanish government has a hotline to answer all queries from Brits living in Spain about the implications of Brexit, in English. Callers can ring 060 when in Spain or +34 902 887060 if calling from abroad and an automated system will offer the choice of either Spanish or English.
You will then be offered a choice of information on the different issues.
The service also offers the option of speaking to an operator for those requiring further information or with a specific query not dealt with by the automated options. Source: https://www.thelocal.es/20200218/spain-launches-dedicated-brexit-hotline
