Ham Cutting Competition: The Tenth Annual National Ham Cutting Competition will take place in Estepona, this Sunday March 15 from noon until 4pm. Based on previous competitions, thousands of spectators are expected to arrive at the Calle Real to watch the competition, learn how to cut ham and have the chance to taste some of the best ham that is being cut by the competitors.

SCAM ALERT FROM THE RED CROSS: The global alarm around the outbreak of the coronavirus is already being exploited by criminals, who take advantage of the situation to enter the homes of “vulnerable” people with the intention of stealing what is inside the homes, or requesting money for fake services.
The argument to gain the trust of the neighbors was to convince them that they were going to undergo the necessary tests to confirm if they had been infected by the virus.
This situation has forced the Red Cross in Álava to warn through its social networks about the bogus of false NGO volunteers They visit homes to perform their coronavirus tests on their victims.
“No, we are not knocking on the doors of the houses to do the coronavirus tests”, explains Red Cross in a tweet, ensuring that their volunteers are not engaged in testing coronavirus at home.

BREAKING NEWS- Italy extends its quarantine to the entire country; PM asks residents to stay at home:
-Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said Monday he will sign a decree that extends the lockdown of the Lombardy region to the entire country as Italy’s COVID-19 death toll continues to rise.

Cases of coronavirus in Malaga province increase to 42: Fifteen new cases were reported in the province of Malaga on Monday, while the total for Spain reached 1,200; figures for Madrid more than doubled from 202 to 469 in just 24 hours.
Seventeen people with the virus have died in Spain, the majority of them elderly with existing health conditions.
The Spanish Health Ministry has said that the current evolution of the virus in Spain is “as expected” and that so far the official situation is still one of “containment”.

UPDATED 9pm Sunday March 8: (Wall St. Journal) ITALY RESTRICTS QUARTER OF POPULATION. Italy Locks Down the Country’s North to Fight Coronavirus. Quarantine bans movement into and out of northern provinces, including Milan, Venice and Parma: A decree from the Italian Prime Minister’s office says people living in Lombardy, where Milan is the capital, and the named provinces in Lombardy’s nearby regions must “absolutely avoid any movement into and out of the areas.”
Italy had confirmed 5,883 coronavirus cases by Saturday, of which 233 people had died. Italy has tried to respond with moderate restrictions, such as banning many public events; before Saturday it had only imposed lockdowns on small areas in the country’s north, with a population of around 50,000.
Spain’s Coronavirus death toll jumps to 17 after 7 deaths Sunday. While the Spanish health authority has confirmed that there are now more than 605 people infected with COVID-19 across the country, they stress there is no reason to panic as these numbers are small when compared to the regular annual flu cases and fatalities.

Gloomy Outlook For Summer Entertainment and Tourism: The music scene on Spain’s Costa del Sol is under threat as music agents are struggling to get artists to come to Spain due to coronavirus scares. One well known music agent on the Costa del Sol told the Euro Weekly News how many issues he has: ” I’m calling bands and artists and offering them gigs but they say ”no thanks” at this present time, citing it’s not worth the risk travelling here to Spain.

Italy Plans Large-Scale Lockdown in Country’s North to Fight Coronavirus (Wall St. Journal): The Quarantine, if approved, would ban movement into and out northern provinces, including Milan, Venice and Parma. The government hasn’t yet taken a final decision, but one could come on Saturday night, according to two Italian officials. The quarantine would take effect on Sunday and run until April 3, according to the draft decree. Italy had confirmed 5,883 coronavirus cases by Saturday, of which 233 people had died. The Italian government is planning to lock down 16 million people—more than a quarter of its population, including the region around Milan and 11 provinces in nearby regions—in the most sweeping steps any European country has prepared to take against the coronavirus epidemic.
A draft decree from the Italian Prime Minister’s office, seen by The Wall Street Journal, says people living in Lombardy, where Milan is the capital, and the named provinces in Lombardy’s nearby regions must “absolutely avoid any movement into and out of the areas.”

Malaga has announced its 22nd case of Coronavirus this evening. It’s now reported to be the province with the most amount of COVID-19 cases in Andalucia. The latest case involves a 71-year-old woman who is now in isolation at home, according to Malaga’s health authorities. It is the fourth positive case reported Saturday in Malaga alone.

Virgin Media Data Leak Exposes Details of 900,000 Customers: If you have a Virgin Media account you need to be alert to phishing attack emails, and scam phone calls, where the attacker leverages data from the leak to convince you they are really Virgin employees. Affected customers should be suspicious of phishing emails, which are usually the next step of cybercriminals with such data in hands to trick users into giving away further details like their passwords and banking information.
“We urge people to remain cautious before clicking on an unknown link or giving any details to an unverified or unknown party. Online security advice and help on a range of topics are available on our website,” Virgin Media said.
Though the compromised data doesn’t include any banking or financial data, it is always a good idea to be vigilant and keep a close eye on your bank and payment card statements and report any unusual activity to your respective bank.

Smart Meter Scandal in Spain: Millions of Spain’s ‘intelligent’ electric meters could have a serious security fault, according to a report from El Confidencial. The owners of cybersecurity firm Tarlogic were able to demonstrate how easy it is for hackers to tap into the country’s electricity network and cut off electricity supply, leaving towns and cities completely in the dark. The Barcelona-based company was also able to demonstrate exactly which meters posed the most risk and why, yesterday at the RootedCon conference. Tarlogic estimates that around 50% of the intelligent meters (around 13.6 million) in the country could be affected.

Google Changes It’s Search Indexing Again, Bad News For Google Search Users and Owners of Older Websites: Originally Google search results were ranked by popularity (number of visits), which is logical and what most users want. Then a few years ago Google changed to Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms, which ranked search results by the likelihood you would click on a item in the search result item, these clicks generate income for Google and ignore the user’s desire to locate search results most related to the search term. Now Google is changing it’s search methods again.
Google will now first look at all websites that fit the searched term, and place on top of the results websites optimized for viewing on mobile devices (tablets and smartphones) when indexing and ranking content for search results. Those mobile friendly websites will then be ranked with the old “most likely to get clicks” method. Google says it implemented this ranking method to encourage website owners to prioritize mobile-friendliness and user experience. (And I suppose money had nothing to do with it? In truth, this is a response to the trend that more people make online purchases with mobile devices than with laptops and PCs. -Naythan). This also impacts website owners. Google will determine by the content on your website and it’s mobile-friendliness rank where your site will rank in their search results. Now, this might sound as though it could have an impact on your current rankings, but for many websites, there will be no change as most websites built in the past few years are already mobile-optimized. However, if the site is older, and not optimized for mobile devices, it will suffer and drop in the Google search results, even if it is more popular, or more closely matches the search term!

Holy Week is commonly known as “la Mananta”, presents the processions of biblical figures from the Old and New Testament. These are dressed in period costume and carry the martyrs or identifying attributes and are shrouded in veils. The Roman soldiers and centurions wear helmets in a live representation of the Bible. The biblical figures, currently of the Corporations (Groups governed by statutes and that have houses, known as Cuarteles [residences], where they get together all year and especially during Lent and Holy Week), accompany the processions that run from the Friday before Holy Week to Easter Sunday and they have existed since 17th century. These include the Roman Empire, which is noteworthy due to its number, martial nature, beauty of the costumes and original music marches.

There are 2 terraces with plantings so if one loves to garden, you’d be put at the top of the list although having a green thumb is not a requirement as the watering is on an automatic sprinkler system. The rent is 2000€ per month.

Bella Vista – New Restaurant Recommendation on Torrox Costa: Tried the new Bella Vista restaurant on the paseo in Torrox Costa yesterday, fabulous! Located at the bottom of Avenida America, it has amazing choices for the three-course Menu del Dia at 9.50 euros; we were a group of 7 so tried most of the 4 choices of starter, 5 main and 4 dessert, and all were delicious! Mains include hake, pork with pepper sauce, chicken with brandy sauce, spaghetti bolognese or beef burger. A la carte also available with a great range and good prices. Temporary residency in Spain after Brexit: I am not sure if this subject has already been covered in the daily Digame Newsletter, if so I have missed it unfortunately. Has anybody gone through the process of applying for Spanish temporary residency this year on the Costa del Sol? I understand that if you plan to spend more than 3 months of the year in Spain from 2021 you need to apply for a special permit in 2020 and I am looking for any advice or information.

Robbery in Torrox Update: On the off chance, I called into the ‘policia local’ in Nerja today to ask if my purse, that was stolen on Saturday night in Torrox, had been handed in. As soon as I gave my name the police man pulled out a big box containing loads of evidence bags and it was there. There clearly was no communication between Guardia Civil, who I reported it to, and the local police. It had been thrown on the road at Punta Lara. So thank you to whoever handed it in and for anyone else who has had their purse or bag stolen in may be worth going round the local police stations to ask, rather than to assume you will be contacted.

Torrox council introduces fines for irresponsible dog owners: Torrox town hall announced last week that owners who do not clean up after their dogs could be subject to a fine of between 120 and 700 euros. Mayor of Torrox Óscar Medina said that the law is already in place but that there will be a “few weeks’ grace” during which fines will not be issued.
Local Police have been charged with informing pet owners of the changes and issuing warnings.
Bottles, which should be filled with water and vinegar, are freely available from tourist information and town hall offices in Torrox town and costa and El Morche.

Football and Basketball Matches To Be Closed To Fans: The Champions League match between Valencia and Atalanta will be played behind closed doors next week to try and contain the rapid spread of the deadly coronavirus, Spain’s health minister said Tuesday. The Spanish government has made the decision to close the match to supporters due to the “large presence of fans” from area of northern Italy most affected by the coronavirus outbreak, said Illa. Salvador Illa also said that the second leg of Getafe’s Europa League last 32 tie with Inter Milan on March 19 would also be played without fans in the stands.
Basketball matches between Spanish teams and clubs in northern Italy have also been affected, with Valencia v Olimpia Milan on March 5 in the men’s EuroLeague and Girona v Venezia in the Women’s Eurocoupe on March 19th closed off to supporters.

“New Hacking Threats On The Horizon”, with comments by DoctorLaptop: For computer/tablet/smartphone users, dealing with malware became a routine task. Then file-less bugs appeared to complicate things, invisible to consumer anti-virus detection. Now we are hearing about 2 new hacking vectors.
-This exploits the device’s microphone to use unhearable vibrations, transmitted thru the table you are sitting at, to trigger the device’s Voice Assistant function to open the device to nearby hackers. If you are sharing a table with others while using your computer/device, and you see a small block with a suction cup holding it to the table, someone at that table is a hacker. This is called a “SurfingAttack”.
Once set up, an interloper can not only access all your data, they can also silently activate the cam, audio recorder and voice assistants (e.g., using “OK Google” or “Hey Siri” ), intercept 2-factor security codes and also generate attack commands using text-to-speech (TTS) systems — all of which are transmitted in the form of ultrasonic guided wave signals that can propagate along the table to control the devices.
-This other new exploit is called Light Commands– it employs lasers to inject inaudible commands into tablets, smartphones and smartspeakers and other smart-devices, to gain access or surreptitiously cause them to unlock doors, shop on e-commerce websites, and even start vehicles.
This attack requires a laser beam to be in direct line of sight to the target device in question, so if you see someone pointing a laser-pointer at your digital device, including your digital equipped vehicle, digital doorlocks and garage door openers, that could be hackers at work.
If anything, the latest research presents new attack vectors that will require device makers to erect new security defenses and safeguard devices from these attacks that are increasingly becoming an entry point for all “smart” devices.

Bad Windows Update, Follow-up: I have now seen 15 computers with this problem. They fall into 2 catagories. Some have software issues like a lost web browser and/or bookmarks, and scrambled Settings, but the core system remained intact. Others have System issues, these will not start, or show a black screen, these may also have deleted data folders (this data may or may not be recoverable!). The later group may also have had all System Restore Points deleted, making recovery more difficult. -DoctorLaptop

New Rotary Club in Nerja: The local Rotary district is seeking to expand into the Eastern Costa del Sol and as part of its initiative is looking to form an international club to be based in Nerja. This new club will be sponsored by the Rotary Club of Marbella-Guadalmina.
This new club will be looking to recruit in an area running from Almunecar to Rincorn de la Victoria. It wants to attract current and former Rotarians living in this area as well as people who would like to serve their community through Rotary the world’s largest service organisation.

Warning – Thieves on Torrox Costa: On Saturday night I was out having a meal in a restaurant on Torrox Costa. I had placed my bag over the back of the Chair. I had my husband beside me and two friends opposite me. A group of 1 man and 2 women came in and sat behind us. They told the waitress they were waiting for a friend. After about 10 mins they got up to leave at the same time the waitress asked if my bag was ok. As I took my bag off the back of the chair they ran out into a waiting car and sped off with out lights. Of course they had removed the purse from my bag. I did not feel a thing. The Guardia Civil said they are operating along this part of the coast. Without the full number plate there is not much the police can do.

The Alhambra sells 13,000 tickets in eight hours with a new system, gets overloaded: The Alhambra in Granada has launched its new ticketing system on Sunday and has sold 12,590 tickets in the first eight hours, an average of 1,200 per hour, as reported by the Board, which has recognized “incidents” on their website due to high demand. Most of these incidents have responded to a “slowdown” of the response times of the ticket sales website “in times of high demand”.
