SPAIN
The Constitutional Court rejects the Ombudsman’s appeal against the ‘grandchildren’s law’ and upholds the suspension of overseas citizen voting without proof of family exile: {Trans, summary}
– The Constitutional Court has rejected, by a majority of ten votes to two, the Ombudsman’s appeal against the Supreme Court’s suspension of voting rights for certain Spanish citizens who acquired nationality under the Grandchildren’s Law. Those unable to prove descent from exiles remain affected. The appeal was dismissed as premature because the Supreme Court has yet to rule on the substance of the case.
– The Ombudsman had sought urgent interim relief to restore voting rights for more than 160,000 Spanish citizens registered on the Electoral Census of Absent Residents (CERA), allowing them to vote in the general election scheduled for 29 November.
– The ruling leaves the suspension in place for now, raising serious concerns about whether affected voters can participate in the forthcoming election. Electoral deadlines are approaching, and administrative delays, alongside difficulties at Spanish consulates, could make restoring their voting rights in time practically impossible.
– The Ombudsman argued that the suspension infringes equality, political participation and effective judicial protection. It also warned that the harm would be irreversible for this election, since voting rights cannot be exercised retrospectively. Although some affected citizens may qualify for an exemption by proving their descent from exiles through consular records, the process may not reach many voters before polling day.
– The appeal’s rejection does not settle the underlying legal dispute, but the timing could effectively exclude eligible citizens from the upcoming election. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/espana/constitucional-rechaza…

Milei calls Pedro Sánchez an “unpresentable dictator” during his visit to Madrid– “I’m not going to see a thieving criminal.”: {Trans, summary}
– Javier Milei, Argentina’s president, used a speech at Madrid’s Nueva Economía Forum to launch a fierce attack on Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, calling him “the unpresentable dictator Pedro Sánchez”, “criminal” and “corrupt”. He refused to meet Sánchez, alleging that socialist leaders exploit the state for personal gain. He praised Madrid regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso and Vox leader Santiago Abascal as allies with positive ideas for Spain.
– Milei warned Spaniards against continuing to support socialism, declaring, “I come from the future to warn you what awaits you if you continue embracing the tyrannies of the socialists.” He blamed left-wing policies for economic stagnation, reduced opportunities for young people and Argentina’s prolonged impoverishment. He also attacked European immigration policies, alleging that immigration was undermining European culture and accusing Spain’s government of encouraging migration for electoral advantage.
– Criticising Sánchez’s housing policies, Milei argued that rental market intervention reduces supply and creates black markets. He claimed Argentina’s repeal of its rent law had quadrupled rental supply within 30 months and reduced rents by 40 per cent in real terms. These figures were presented by Milei and were not independently verified in the article.
– Milei also criticised the Spanish government’s handling of migration at Ceuta’s border. He did not meet King Felipe VI, reportedly because of scheduling constraints and Spanish protocol. Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/internacional/milei-madrid…

Bookmakers predict Feijóo will win the elections and foresee a PP-Vox government: {Trans}
– Bookmakers are backing People’s Party (PP) leader Alberto Núñez Feijoo to win Spain’s general election on 29 November, placing him well ahead of incumbent Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who is seeking re-election. However, they do not expect the PP to govern alone, with a coalition government involving Vox seen as the most likely outcome.
– Online betting odds reviewed by Europa Press, including those offered by Sportium, Retabet and Winamax, suggest a clear PP victory. Returns range from €1.10 to €1.35 for every euro wagered on a PP win, compared with €2.50 to €5 for a PSOE victory. Vox ranks third, with potential returns of €17 to €40 per euro staked. A win by any other candidate would pay €100 per euro wagered. Nationally, the alternatives include Ada Colau of Frente Amplio, Irene Montero of Podemos and Miriam González of Democracia21.
– As for the formation of the next government, a PP-Vox coalition is the bookmakers’ predicted outcome, with odds ranging from €1.10 to €1.30 per euro wagered. A renewed PSOE coalition with parties to its left, as in the previous two legislatures, pays between €3 and €4. The prospect of Feijoo governing alone is priced at €6 per euro wagered. MALAGA CITY
Malaga will only be able to build 3,000 of its 30,000 potential homes within five years: {Trans, summary}
– Savills global property consultancy warns that Malaga faces a prolonged housing emergency, driven by insufficient supply, slow construction and rising demand. The consultancy estimates that Malaga city needs 60,000 additional homes over the next decade, yet current conditions would allow only 3,000 to be built within five years and, at best, 10,000 within ten years. Even under unlikely ‘favourable planning conditions’, construction might reach 15,000 homes in a decade, far below requirements.
– The city has land allocated for approximately 30,000 homes, including 12,579 designated as affordable housing, but these sites remain undeveloped.
– Separately, Malaga province is expected to gain around 250,000 residents over the next ten years, potentially intensifying pressure on the capital and surrounding areas. This provincial population forecast should not be confused with the city’s housing deficit estimate.
– The main obstacle is the pace of development. Delivering homes can take more than ten years after land purchase, including six years before urbanisation begins, followed by infrastructure works and construction. In Malaga, this six-year pre-construction phase involves planning decisions, technical studies, legal agreements and administrative approvals, often requiring coordination between multiple public bodies and landowners. {Against a backdrop of bureaucratic incompetence and a long-documented history of corruption in urban planning, the delays are hardly surprising. -Ed.}
– Savills proposes expanding flexible accommodation, student residences and senior living, but warns that the next five years will be critical.

VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA
Víctor González (PSOE) warns of the risk of losing another 12 million in European funds in Vélez-Málaga due to financial mismanagement, same as in Torrox: {Trans, summary}
– The PSOE in Vélez-Málaga has warned that the municipality risks losing €12 million in European Union funding for 20 projects because, more than a year after the grants were announced, work has not begun and contracts have not been put out to tender. The council would need to contribute a further €2 million if these EU funds were to be used, bringing the total lost investment to €14 million.
– Socialist spokesman Víctor González has criticised the apparent lack of progress, citing planned renovations to the Fortaleza, improvements to Calle Cilla and Plaza de la Concepción, new car parks and upgrades to the Teatro del Carmen. According to González, more than a year after these grants were announced, no work has begun, nor have the contracts been put out to tender. “Where are the projects? Where are the works? After all this time, we haven’t seen a single brick laid or a single contract awarded for these investments,” he criticized.
– The situation is complicated by the municipal contribution’s dependence on a loan. Because the 2025 accounts failed to meet budgetary stability targets, the council must approve a financial recovery plan and obtain authorisation from the Andalusian regional government before borrowing. This could cause further delays.
– The PSOE claims the council has already lost around €16 million in other European funding and warns that failure to meet deadlines could mean returning grants with interest. MIJAS
Home Invasion & Assault–Several hooded youths raid house, assault residents with a knife and machete in Mijas: {Trans}
– The Fuengirola Local Police have arrested a 16-year-old for his alleged involvement in an armed robbery with a knife at a home in the municipality of Mija . The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, October 20, and resulted in two residents being injured, one of them suffering a deep cut to his hand that required nine stitches.
– The police intervention began shortly after 02:15, following a call from a citizen who reported the presence of several hooded youths at the entrance to a building on C/ Camino de Santiago, in the area bordering both municipalities. Upon arrival, officers apprehended several of those involved. The arrested minor attempted to escape and resisted arrest. Inside the building, officers also found a machete, a knife, and a screwdriver that had allegedly been hidden during the altercation.
– Once inside the house, officers found two young men, aged 21 and 29, with injuries and signs of having fought off the alleged assailants.
– The detainee and the two injured were transferred to the Las Lagunas emergency centre to receive medical assistance .
– According to initial investigations, the robbery occurred after several individuals demanded that residents hand over various items and suspected narcotics. This suggests a possible connection between the incident and drugs, although the investigation remains ongoing. The investigation was opened for alleged crimes of robbery with violence and intimidation using a bladed weapon, and assault. The case has been handed over to the National Police for further investigation. No further arrests have been reported at this time. – The incident took place around 10:00 p.m. at the aforementioned residence, located in the Aljarafe region. The alleged perpetrators stole several valuables. At the moment, the Civil Guard is investigating what happened, in order to identify the alleged perpetrators and clarify the circumstances surrounding these events. UK
Britain approves massive North Sea drilling project under Trump pressure; could add $3.8B to UK economy:
– The British government on Wednesday green-lit a long-stalled drilling project in the North Sea – a win for the oil industry and President Trump, who has urged UK leaders to ramp up drilling.
– Prime Minister Andy Burnham called it a “pragmatic” decision, saying the Jackdaw field off the coast of Scotland will provide up to 40 million barrels of oil over its lifetime and add an estimated $3.8 billion to the UK economy. He also committed billions of dollars to a new fund to bolster renewable energy development across the country – likely anticipating backlash from environmentalists, who have protested drilling projects over the risk of global warming.
– Trump, who has repeatedly pressured British leaders to “open up” the North Sea for drilling, praised the decision in a Wednesday morning Truth Social post. “Great news for the wealth and prosperity of the United Kingdom, and the wonderful region of Aberdeen. The UK has started drilling in the North Sea, one of the greatest and most prosperous areas of OIL in the World,” the president wrote. “They should go FULL BLAST!!! This will make the UK very wealthy again.” Full article: https://nypost.com/2026/10/21/business/britain-approves-massive-north-sea…
