Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN

The Supreme Court reluctantly grants amnesty to Junqueras, Romeva, Turull and Bassa, the leaders of the ‘procés’ convicted of embezzlement: {Trans, summary}
– The Supreme Court has decided to apply the amnesty law to the former Catalan vice-president and leader of ERC, Oriol Junqueras, and the former ministers Raül Romeva, Jordi Turull and Dolors Bassa, two years after its entry into force and after the Constitutional Court endorsed the pardon for embezzlement, the crime for which the four were convicted.
– However, the judges criticize the Constitutional Court’s “unnecessary pomp,” which they say “reveals a desire to dress up an invasive line of reasoning that encroaches on the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction.”
– The Criminal Chamber, which tried the ‘procés’, is now processing the new order, after the Constitutional Court ordered it to grant amnesty to the pro-independence leaders prosecuted for embezzlement, both those convicted and those under investigation: the former president and leader of Junts, Carles Puigdemont, and the former ministers Toni Comín and Lluís Puig, who were not tried because they fled from justice after the illegal referendum of 2017. Pedro’s plan to challenge the Nov 29 elections that he is projected to lose: {Trans, summary}
– The Sanchez administration at Moncloa is preparing underhanded legal manoeuvres to contest the 29 November election results should the 163,020 people who recently obtained Spanish nationality under the Grandchildren Law, thanks to a controversial administrative instruction issued by the sister of minister Oscar Puente, ultimately be barred from voting.
– Socialist sources bluntly state they will “go all the way”, already examining options to challenge both the census and the validity of the outcome itself if the result is close. – While the Supreme Court has upheld the temporary suspension of these voters’ rights and the Constitutional Court is about to decide on an appeal, Moncloa separates the immediate fight to restore their ballots from a calculated post-election phase. In that second stage the exclusion’s consequences could be litigated, offering a convenient means to keep political tension alive at the start of a new legislature after a right-wing win.
– Although electoral law permits parties to file rapid challenges against declared results, the mere existence of excluded voters would not automatically annul seats; any successful case would have to prove, province by province, that the numbers actually altered outcomes. Administrative delays in verifying claims could be exploited to raise further equality arguments. This readiness to drag disputes through the courts looks less like a defence of rights and more like a pre-planned device to undermine an unwelcome democratic result.

Andalucia Maintains Indefinite Health Services Strike (despite national Health strike postponement due to elections), Phase #1 is 13 November to 4 December: {Trans, summary, explainer}
– In Andalusia the Medical Union (SMA) has called an indefinite doctors’ strike* from 13 November continuously until 4 December. The action seeks to compel the regional Health Department to implement the labour and pay improvements agreed on 29 July after the national framework statute ignored doctors’ demands.
– Union president Rafael Ojeda states that a formal follow-up meeting requested after the summer has still not been convened despite more than six weeks of waiting. He confirms the union remains open to talks and would cancel the strike if concrete timetables and budgets were set. The July agreement includes voluntary on-call duties and a greater share of fixed pay.
– Previous spring stoppages cancelled up to 1.3 million medical procedures. Health councillor Antonio Sanz has called the strike senseless, insisting agreements are always kept and dialogue continues, a claim the union rejects saying those recent contacts mere informal chats rather than formal negotiation.
* {Explainer: “Indefinite” strike (Spanish: huelga indefinida) means the strike has no fixed end date from the outset. It is intended to continue until the union’s demands are met, a satisfactory agreement is reached, or the union decides to call it off. In the specific case of the Andalusian doctors’ strike it is officially called as an “indefinite” action starting on 13 November 2026.
The union has announced a first phase of continuous 24-hour stoppages running from 13 November to 4 December. After 4 December, further stoppages (or the continuation of the strike) will be decided and announced later, depending on how negotiations with the regional health authorities progress. -Ed.}

IZNATE

A wedding in Iznate leaves around 40 people poisoned and one man admitted to the ICU, second such incident in 10 days: {Trans, summary}
– A wedding in Iznate, Málaga, this past weekend has resulted in food poisoning affecting around 40 of the approximately 50 guests. A 39-year-old man with pre-existing health conditions remains in intensive care at the Axarquía Hospital after suffering septic shock. He is the only person known to have required hospitalisation, while others have received medical attention and are recovering at home.
– Initial laboratory tests detected salmonella in one sample, with five further results pending. Investigators suspect a prawn kebab served with sauce may have caused the outbreak, as it was reportedly eaten more frequently by guests who became ill. However, this remains unconfirmed. Health inspectors have collected food samples and are investigating the premises where the meal was prepared, including whether the establishment had the necessary authorisation to provide catering services. Food handlers are also due to be tested.
– Health inspectors visited the establishment where the banquet food was prepared on Tuesday. The venue, owned by the Ayuntamiento Iznateño and made available for events, was used for catering. Inspectors collected various samples for submission to the Public Health laboratory. According to sources, the meal was prepared in a bar that, based on initial findings, lacked the necessary authorization to provide catering services.
– This is the second group food poisoning incident linked to a wedding in Málaga province in ten days. On 10 October, at least 40 people fell ill after a wedding meal at a hotel in Benalmádena. Salmonella was confirmed in that outbreak. No connection between the two incidents has been established. Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/sucesos/boda-iznate-acaba-intoxicados…

CEUTA CRISIS

A Kick Up The Arse! Why is Sanchez admin stalling while Ceuta suffers? Ceuta forced to apply to Supreme Court for action: {Trans}
– {Just like after every recent major emergency- 2024 DANA, 2026 winter floods, Adamuz train disaster, the blackout, wildfires, drought…every time it takes months to get any significant federal response. SNAFU! -Ed.}
– The Government of Ceuta has agreed this Tuesday to file an administrative appeal before the Supreme Court against the “inactivity” of the General State Administration to process the administrative files of the adult migrants who arrived in the city during the massive irregular entry of July 30 and 31, and who still remain there.
– The spokesperson for the local government, Alejandro Ramírez, announced the decision at the press conference following the Governing Council meeting, which approved taking this step after the Government failed to respond to the previous request submitted by the City on September 18.
– The Ceuta government agreed to formulate this request on September 16 to urge the General State Administration to issue and notify, within one month, an express resolution in the expulsion or return and international protection procedures of these people. Once the deadline had passed without receiving a response, the local government decided to take legal action to denounce the lack of allocation and deployment of the necessary personnel and material resources to resolve the cases within the legally established deadlines.
– Ramírez pointed out that the migration situation in Ceuta has become chronic and that the city is still far from returning to normal, almost three months after the mass influx.
– According to the local government, none of the people who entered Ceuta during those two days of invasion have been returned to Morocco through expulsion or deportation proceedings. The returns that have occurred, it clarified, were either voluntary or the result of committing a crime.
– The appeal addresses the inactivity of the General State Administration in processing the procedures affecting adult immigrants who remain in the city, both in matters of expulsion or return and international protection. Judge Tardón confirms that “urgent” help was requested in Ceuta before June 30th; decries continued stalling by Ministry of the Interior: {Trans, summary}
– Judge María Tardón {pic} of the National Court, who is investigating whether the massive and irregular entry of immigrants into Ceuta on July 30 and 31 constituted an “attack” against the integrity of Spain, has confirmed that “extraordinary measures” were requested in the meetings held between senior officials of the Ceuta Executive and the Government Delegation in the days prior to the invasion.
– In a ruling, known to LA RAZÓN, the magistrate states that various witnesses who have already testified “have agreed” that in the meetings on July 27, 28 and 30, “the seriousness of the situation” was repeatedly addressed and the “need to take urgent action” was conveyed to the competent authorities.
– The judge is also tightening the net around the Ministry of the Interior. Above all, because in that same ruling she criticizes the ministry headed by Fernando Grande-Marlaska for its lack of cooperation, since, three months after the migration “crisis,” it has still not provided her with information regarding the “number of entries registered, returns, pushbacks, rescues carried out, deaths, minors assisted, personnel deployed, and resources mobilized” since the day the migrants crossed the El Tarajal border. For Tardón, this data, for which no specific figures have yet been provided, is essential to determine the magnitude of these “criminal acts classified as serious”, their consequences, the resources mobilized, and the subsequent actions taken by the various services. TECH

Google Cloud failures disrupt payments and app access, hindering European banks and cloud services: {Trans, summary}
– Cloud based services including Revolut experienced a service outage on Tuesday. The issue is related to a Google Cloud service disruption in Europe, which is also impacting the operation of other platforms, websites, apps and financial institutions.
– Google has confirmed problems in several of its services in the ‘Europe-west2’ region, corresponding to London, where it has detected an increase in errors and intermittent network failures across all its cloud services. The outage began on Monday, October 19 at 23:08 Pacific Time, which corresponds to 8:08 a.m. this Tuesday in mainland Spain.
– Because banks rely on Google Cloud infrastructure to host applications, store information, or run certain digital processes, an outage of Google’s cloud computing platform affects them.
– Revolut has confirmed that the outage is affecting multiple services, while assuring customers that “all their money and data are safe.” Online user comments indicate difficulties accessing accounts, making transfers, and paying by card.
– For now, Google is inexplicably maintaining an ‘active’ status on its outage page and continuing to investigate the issues. At this time, it has not provided a definitive timeframe for the full restoration of affected services.
– Here is a list of websites which appear to be impacted by the Google Cloud outages: See pic below

SCIENCE

Here’s a brain-twister for those interested in physics– Why we probably live in a multiverse. The once-fringe quantum Many Worlds theory now seems much more likely:
– Quantum mechanics, which recently turned 100 years old, ranks as the most successful theory in the history of physics. Yet on a fundamental level, we still don’t understand what quantum mechanics is saying about how the world works.
– Any standard textbook will tell you that the dynamics of quantum mechanics are based on two axioms, mathematical rules that allow us to theoretically compute the outcome of an experiment. Surprisingly, these two axioms are self-contradictory. They present one of nature’s deepest mysteries: the quantum measurement problem—the fact that the quantum rules describing an object to be measured don’t seem to apply to the object doing the measuring. This disturbing contradiction suggests that different physical laws apply to the observer and the observed.
– One proposal to resolve the paradox is the Many Worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. Many Worlds demands that our universe actually be a multiverse. The idea is often considered fringe, even silly. Lately, however, experimental progress has been changing the situation. Scientists have been able to measure quantum effects in larger and more complex systems and over great distances, blurring the line once thought to separate the scale of observer and observed. These signs that quantum rules might cross over into the macroscopic realm are making many physicists reconsider Many Worlds. But what does this notion really mean for the universe we call home? Ryanair cancels routes from Brussels to Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia and Malaga due to increased taxes in Belgium: {Trans, summary}
– Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary has announced the cancellation of around 20 of his airline’s routes from Brussels and Charleroi (50 kilometers south of the Belgian capital) starting next weekend in retaliation for the increase in airport taxes decreed by the Belgian government; a measure that entails the cancellation of flights from Brussels International Airport to Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia and Malaga.
– Ryanair predicts a historic price rise in Europe this summer.
– O’Leary also warned about the impact of the war in the Middle East on fuel prices and predicted that if things continue this way, ticket prices will register the “biggest increase in history in Europe” next summer, although he did not offer precise data on the evolution he estimates.
“I would encourage them, if they want to fly next summer, to book their holidays as soon as possible, because prices are going to skyrocket, although Europe will probably subsidize them later,” the executive complained, assuring that major airlines like Lufthansa or Air France will receive aid in that scenario. – The union links this to specialist shortages and staffing difficulties at centres, stressing the need for structural measures against the primary care specialist deficit and proper human resources planning by the Andalusian Health Service. Primary care, as the public system’s entry point, requires stable, properly sized staffs with adequate resources. Temporary cover alone is insufficient. CCOO calls for job stability, better conditions and reinforced specialist training to attract and retain qualified staff for accessible, safe, quality care. The Orionid meteor shower is coming. Here’s how and when to watch:
– The Orionids — one of two major meteor showers caused by remnants from Halley’s comet — will peak this week, though a large moon will dim visibility until after it sets late at night.
– During the peak Wednesday night into Thursday morning, it will be possible to see up to 20 meteors per hour in ideal viewing conditions, according to the American Meteor Society. Meteors are still visible for a few weeks before and after the peak.
– The Orionids are viewable in the northern and southern hemispheres after midnight. While they get their name from the Orion constellation, they are visible across the night sky, according to NASA. Orionids can be especially bright and fast, and can leave glowing trains that can last for several seconds. Here’s what to know about the Orionids and other meteor showers.
– The next major meteor shower, the Southern Taurids, is expected to peak Nov. 5, when there will be just a crescent moon, making for favorable viewing conditions. Full article: https://apnews.com/article/orionid-meteor-shower…
