ANDALUCÍA

Andalusian farmers mobilise in Madrid in response to declining profitability, while consumers are seeing prices spike: {Trans, summary}
– ASAJA-Andalucía, COAG Andalucía and Cooperativas Agroalimentarias de Andalucía will participate next Wednesday, October 28, in the large tractor protest in Madrid, called at the national level by ASAJA, COAG and Unión de Uniones to demand answers to a situation that is jeopardizing the profitability and future of thousands of agricultural and livestock farms.
– The mobilization, led by 500 tractors, will depart at 11:00 a.m. from Plaza de Colón, travel along Paseo de Recoletos, Paseo del Prado and conclude at Paseo de la Infanta Isabel in front of the Ministry of Agriculture, where farmers and ranchers from all provinces will gather.
– Farmers and ranchers face intense pressure on their farms due to rising production costs, prices that do not cover expenses, increasing regulatory requirements, and the entry of products from third countries that are not subject to the same requirements demanded of European producers. {Meanwhile supermarket chains race to open new stores & expand margins, while middlemen post record profits. -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/andalucia/campo-andaluz-moviliza…

MALAGA PROVINCE

Parents Across Málaga Province Escalate School Canteen Strike as Catering Giant Faces Mounting Revolt: {Trans, summary}
– More schools across Málaga province are joining a school canteen strike against Mediterránea de Catering, protesting the quality and quantity of school meals. The movement began last Friday at CEIP Parque Clavero in Málaga city and has spread. On 29 October, families at CEIP Salvador Allende in Puerto de la Torre (Málaga city) will hold a protest, and CEIP Almudena Grandes (Málaga city) will strike on 6 November. These join actions already held at CEIP Flor de Azahar in Cártama, CEIP Ximénez de Guzmán in Coín, and CEIP Gregorio Marañón in Rincón de la Victoria.
– Families say children return home hungry, portions are insufficient, and established grammage for rations is sometimes not respected. They also question the “poor quality” of menus, citing alleged larvae and worms in some dishes, a watery vegetable broth mocked as “pisto sin pisto,” and a pumpkin soup whose consistency was widely criticised. Mediterránea de Catering supplies 129 of the province’s 340 canteens, and 24 schools have lodged complaints. The Junta de Andalucía calls some incidents “punctual errors,” while the company says it is reinforcing controls. The Torrox cancer walk reaches a new record with more than 2,000 participants: {Trans, summary}
– The Torrox Cancer Walk reached a new record this past Sunday, October 25th, with over 2,000 participants of all ages in a family-friendly atmosphere.
– The march that took place in Torrox started from the Plaza de La Almedina to travel through part of the town’s historic center and back to the same point, where the participants, mostly dressed in a commemorative pink t-shirt, were welcomed with a plate of migas and arriera salad, fruit and water. The Torrox council unanimously approves the installation of electric vehicle charging points– that will take more than 5 years to complete!: {Trans, summary}
– The Torrox Town Council {pic} unanimously approved the installation of electric vehicle charging points throughout the municipality during its regular October session.
– A previous decree was ratified, approving a draft agreement proposed by the Provincial Council of Málaga for the installation and commissioning of several electric vehicle charging points in Torrox. The project will have an approximate budget of just over €531,000 , of which the City Council will contribute only 20% , as stipulated in the draft agreement.
– To this end, a centralized management model will be established “in order to ensure the proper availability and functionality” of this initiative “under the best possible organizational, technical, and economic conditions,” according to the document approved by the plenary session. This plan will have a time frame of “at least five years from the formal acceptance of the project.” {This sounds like a contradiction, and an excuse for terrible management: “…under the best possible organizational, technical, and economic conditions…” yet it takes 5 years for “several electric vehicle charging points” to be built? And at a cost of over half a million Euros? Nonsense! The fact that they would even suggest that is insulting to anyone with common sense. What kind of idiots do they take us for? I suggest they simply allow existing petrol stations to install 5 to 10 chargers each depending on available space; the stations would probably be willing to foot the bill in return for a cut of the returns. And keep the inept town project managers out of it entirely. This situation clearly demonstrates they are in over their heads. Their efforts to collect large sums of Malaga Province project money has taken priority over the practical aspects of promptly providing a service their own greeny agenda requires. -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.axarquiaplus.es/el-pleno-de-torrox-aprueba…

VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA

61 dogs and cats rescued from extreme conditions of mistreatment in a home in Vélez-Málaga: {Trans}
– The National Police have rescued 61 animals, 29 dogs and 32 cats, from a home in Vélez-Málaga where they were being kept in extremely unsanitary and abusive conditions. The operation resulted in the arrest of a 53-year-old woman for her alleged involvement in a continuing offence of animal abuse, with possible aggravating circumstances of cruelty and resulting death.
– The investigation began after neighbors complained about the constant barking and meowing, as well as the strong odour emanating from the property. The investigation by the Judicial Police of the Vélez-Málaga Police Station culminated in a search warrant being executed at the residence, where officers found several animals confined in the dark inside kitchen cabinets.
– According to the National Police, the woman was collecting stray dogs and cats without any oversight and keeping them without providing basic food and hygiene. The house was in extremely unsanitary conditions, and many of the animals suffered from bloody diarrhea, alopecia, eye problems, and diseases such as leishmaniasis, parvovirus, and giardia. Some dogs had to be hospitalized for assisted feeding and emergency veterinary treatment, although several animals died despite the care they received.
– The rescued animals are currently in the care of shelters and animal protection centres in the province of Málaga. The National Police have appealed to the public for help finding them homes. Those interested in adopting can request information by calling 952 97 16 63. Adoption is offered free of charge. The operation involved the Vélez-Málaga City Council, which covered the veterinary expenses resulting from the urgent care of the felines, as well as several animal shelters in the province. PRODUCT ALERT

Malaga Olive Oil Fraud– Inferior Oil Sold as Organic Extra Virgin, Generating Over €4 Million in Illegal Profits: {Trans, summary}
– Spanish authorities have dismantled an alleged criminal organisation accused of selling lower-quality olive oil as premium organic extra virgin olive oil, including in Malaga province.
– The Civil Guard’s Operation Oretania has resulted in twelve arrests across Jaen, Malaga, Cordoba and Madrid. Investigators allege that, since January 2023, the scheme involved more than seven million kilograms of olive oil and generated over €4 million in illegal profits.
– The operation allegedly used fictitious purchases, forged invoices, transport documents and contracts to disguise the oil’s true origin and quality. Although the oil remained stored in Spain, paperwork falsely suggested international shipments to Portugal and subsequent imports of organic extra virgin olive oil. Shell companies allegedly helped conceal the transactions.
– Authorities searched 14 properties, including three olive oil production facilities in Jaen, Cordoba and Malaga. More than one million kilograms of oil held in 34 tanks were seized or immobilised over traceability and food safety concerns.
– The investigation remains open, including possible tax offences, so no brand names are being disclosed at this time, or the rogue oil may have been sold in bulk to other producers and retailers. Source, Spanish: https://www.areacostadelsol.com/malaga/destapan-trama-millonaria-fraude…
