Has anyone had problems with Cajamar bank in Competa?

We were recommended this bank by our estate agent with first year no fees. However we have been charged fees and cannot get any response via email or phone, they appear to screen calls from UK clients .

Bike Ride for CUDECA – Update on Donations

It is with a huge amount of gratitude that I can now tell you that Cudeca currently have 823.91€ whilst Cancer Research UK have £205 (£235 with gift aid).

This is more than double what I set myself.

Advice Needed – Boundaries and Trees

Need advice from someone who knows boundary laws in Spain. My neighbour says that because my fir trees have spread out so they now grow partially across our dividing fence I must remove them altogether – cut them down, and at my cost. Now, in the UK I know that the law says you are free to cut down any overhanging branches from your neighbour (albeit at your OWN cost) but you may not otherwise damage the tree. Does the same apply in Spain? i.e. it is up to him to trim off the bits he doesn’t want over his land? Hope so: I need the shade…

Information Needed – Health Care

We have recently arrived to live in Spain and we are trying to get registered for healthcare.
We have a Pardon, a NIE number and an S1 form from the UK pension office.
We are not sure what to do next, it says on the form to take it to the INSS is that the social security office. Our other problem is we don’t speak Spanish so we are finding it very difficult to get any information or to complete any forms.

News from DoctorLaptop -On Fiber Optic Internet

Just to let folks know, I had Axartel fiber optic internet installed today. I got 60Mb/s speed for €24.95/mo + €60 to install including wifi router. Install took an hour. No landline required. The speed tests at 48 to 65Mb/s depending on the website I test at, so I am very pleased. Installers even spoke English. This was the best deal for my purposes. Other providers are available but require a package purchase including a landline I have no use for. If you do want a landline and IPTV with your internet I suggest you check the websites for Movistar, Axartel, Orange, etc. for the deal that best suits you.

I can now offer classes that require the good internet speeds I was lacking previously.

They have a small area of international food and they are by far the best price too (we are Greene King fans!) so always stock up when we go there.

Hermanos Bustos in Vélez-Málaga sell food for all livestock, pigs/cattle/horses/chickens etc. Their range has dramatically increased over the last 20 years or so, they are also very knowledgeable and helpful. They are located along the slip road that runs from the Mayorista end of Velez (where Hermanos Jeromo is), almost opposite the newish bus station at that end of the town, near the park that used to have the duck pond. they are open normal Spanish hours.

I have a four chickens myself and depending if you need to buy food by the sack or by the kilo there are a few places to try.

The farm shop in Velez opposite the veg whole sale market will sell by the sack or the kilo.

In Torre del Mar there is a small shop behind the police station that looks like pet shop but will sell you chicken food plus supplementary seeds by the kilo and a truly nice guy.

A small pet type shop one block up on the main road from ALDI in Torrox will sell by the sack or kilo plus if you have a car there is another place in Torrox through a  pueblo that someone told me was walkable but really may never have walked in his life !!   I hope this helps/

I rent my flat in Torre del Mar for summer visitors, and have had an enquiry about what to do in the area (outside the normal ‘how far is the beach’ questions).   I’m recommending a visit to Malaga, but I’m not sure what to advise them on how to get there.  I know that there is a bus service, but I’ve been unable to find anything on-line about timetables.  And I have no idea what to advise them about parking in the city if they decide to drive.  Or perhaps there’s a half-way house of parking outside the city and getting a bus or train in?

Also, if anyone knows of a reliable tour operator in Torre del Mar who can arrange short trips (such as visits to Granada), I’d be very grateful to have the information.

Tax Declaration 2015

For those of you who do your own tax declaration directly with Hacienda (as opposed to via a gestor/financial advisor etc), you may not be aware that for the first time this year, pensions previously not declared under the Double Taxation Agreement, such as Teachers Pensions, Army Pensions and the like, from 2015 have to be declared – not to be taxed (as they are still taxed in the UK) but for calculating your tax band. This is not optional! I only found out by chance a couple of weeks ago, and as they will almost certainly catch up with you, best to do it right now and avoid not only the tax in the future but a hefty fine as well!

It is on a vertical wall, in the shadow of a leaf growing in a wall pot.               About the size of a well grown mussel and in fact looks like half of one, sliced through it’s length. The covering is like a fine silver grey gossamer. Through it can be made out a shape about 3cm long, half cm diameter.

What’s on– Filming in Torrox 

Last 23 June 2016 the famous Spanish director and actor Jaime Ordóñez
did his casting of support actors for his next film.

According to Torrox Council member Sandra Extremera this casting was done  between 12.00 and 2.00pm in the Salón de Usos Múltiples in Torrox-Costa.

The filming is planned in Torrox (El Morche beach) for one of the days

12, 13 and 14 July.
Most people know Jaime Ordóñez as a popular Spanish actor, mostly known from the famous series on Antena 3 ¨Aquí no hay quien viva¨ and from his work
together with José Mota that he has been doing for 7 years now. Jaime
Ordóñez was born in Málaga in 1971.

Missing- Cat  

Miró was last seen in the Pago El Cerro area of Competa, on the 2nd June.

He is a beautiful, happy, affectionate little boy, castrated and has only one eye.

Available –, a soft , lollopy, gentle, gigante puppy.   

I say “giant” because she weighs fifteen kilos at five months old !  She is at that age where her beautiful, shiny coat looks as if belongs to someone, at least one size larger.
I found her three day ago, wandering on the Algarrobo to Competa road. near the Guardia.

The ladies of the houses nearby say she had been there for four days.

They have been feeding her. No. chip and no collar.

Carolina, my Vet, thinks that it´s probable that the owners bought a tiny puppy four months ago, but when, like Topsy, she grew and grew and grew, they abandoned her.

She may well be lost, as she is in such good condition, but I don’t think so.
She is very soft, very intelligent & house trained,

Apart from understandable bouts of puppishness, she is a very quiet, gentle, intelligent pooch.  She would make a wonderful companion but sadly , not for me. I have five dogs with whom she gets on very well, but Carolina has convinced me that, at my age, i should not be taking on another puppy.

She is probably right. Although I do object to “at my age” !
So…. Reluctantly, i am looking for a home for this lovely girl.

You, whoever you are, will love her, I promise.

From 8 to 10 we alternate speaking only in Spanish or English for 30 minutes each. That way we all have the opportunity to practise our target language. If you like you can just listen but we hope everyone has a chance to practise their language skills and learn new words.

We need to downsize on our large car, a Renault Vel Satis 2.2dCi. Ideally we’d exchange with a cash adjustment for a smaller, more manageable car (automatic would be excellent), but could simply sell. ‘(‘Having five in the Vel Satis is like having five in the ballroom of the Grosvenor’).
This is a very unusual car – other than mine, I’ve only seen 2 in the last 4 years – and it was once compared in a review to a BMW 5 series in levels of equipment and comfort. Mine was registered in France in 2005 and matriculated here the following year (as it’s so unusual, I’ve put links to some reviews below). Recent repairs have included a new clutch and flywheel, new turbo pipes and electrics cables, new injector, new steering column sensor, and it has been serviced by the main dealers in Vélez.

Epic Bike Ride for Cudeca

Just to let everyone know that I completed the ride up from Algarrobo Costa to Competa on Monday June 6th.

I wanted to thank everyone for their support on the day and the generous donations that continue to come in, some from as far away as Australia!

Apart from the two online donation websites there are 3 sealed Cudeca tins which will be heading back to Cudeca this week for opening and counting. As soon as I have a final figure I will share that with you all.

What’s on –Trip to Gibraltar 5^th August

The Phoenix Club are taking bookings for their August shopping trip to Gibraltar on Friday 5th August.

We have pick ups at at the A1 Garden Centre, Torre del Mar bus station and finally at Algarrobo Lidl at 08.30.  The bus is parked in Morrisons car park and we leave Gibraltar at 16.30.  Due to visa restrictions on entering Gibraltar, please advise if you are a non EU citizen when you book.  It is important to remember to bring with you your EHIC card, just in case, and passports are essential.  On the way to Gibraltar we stop to spend a penny and for coffee.

We would greatly appreciate if payment was made before the journey.

The price?  €12pp includes a €1 gratuity for the driver.  Children under 12 can join us for 1/2 price.
Early booking is recommended if you like a particular place, as seat numbers are allocated on a first come, first served basis.  Plenty to see in Gibraltar apart from the shopping!

Epic Ride for CUDECA!

Just to let everyone know that I completed the ride up from Algarrobo Costa to Competa on Monday June 6th.

I wanted to thank everyone for their support on the day and the generous donations that continue to come in, some from as far away as Australia!

Apart from the two online donation websites there are 3 sealed Cudeca tins which will be heading back to Cudeca this week for opening and counting. As soon as I have a final figure I will share that with you all.

Thank you once again, your support most certainly gave me wings!

Keeping Competa Clean…

Would the person who kindly picks up their dog faeces but then places the bags on peoples doorsteps & windows sills, please remove them completely & either place them in the bins provided or take them home with you. It is not very pleasant for others & I cannot understand why you even bother to pick them up in the first place if you are not going to discard them in the proper manner. I can thoroughly recommend the free Spanish lessons given by Sergio in Torrox Costa – he’s an excellent teacher, very patient and with a perfect Castilian accent.

I’ve been attending these classes all this year and my spoken language has improved enormously. He encourages everyone to participate and makes the classes interesting and fun, it’s a very relaxed atmosphere, but he also makes sure you understand everything and gain from the classes.

So why not sign up for year 2 starting in September?

The more students that sign up the better choice of levels and times Sergio will be able to provide.
Register in the government building behind Lews near the Torrox Costa lighthouse, he is there every weekday morning until30 June.

I just have to second Jeremy’s endorsement of Kevin and Jenny

for valeting a car.

When I needed to valet my Citroen Picasa, it was too was filthy inside, mainly with mud and dog hair and, for a very reasonable price, they came to my house (near Velez Malaga), cleaned the car throughout and left it gleaming and smelling fresh once more. They told me exactly when they’d be coming and just worked until they were happy the job was done to their (and my) satisfaction. Lovely people and a lovely job done. We recently had an infestation where we access electricity cables to our house.  I found various suggestions online and tried a few with some success (long term can’t yet say…)

Boric acid (3€ a sachet from farmacias) can be used to make paste with water and something sweet like honey or savoury like peanut butter (depending on ants’ preferences). Unfortunately our ants seemed to ignore this. I’m wary of using boric acid though because of other wildlife and visiting granddaughter.

Most effective for in the garden (so far) has been ground nutmeg sprinkled liberally where you see ant activity – cheap and safe

They were also massacring our Dama de Noche, so I tried a solution with washing up liquid and a little olive oil steeped with garlic cloves. I only used this solution once and the plant is now vigorous and healthy.

Two Puppies Need Homes this week

The two puppies you see in the pics, a brother and sister, have recently adopted us and we’d like to find homes for them.

However, there seems to be a glut of stray animals at the moment and none of our local shelters have room for them. Sadly, we can’t continue to foster them for much more than a week as we have travel plans. If we can’t find homes for them before then, we’ll have no choice but to let them back out on the street or drop them off at a perrera, which are both terrible options for them.

They are very sweet, have gained a bit of weight since the pics, great with children (including our own toddler, with whom they are very patient), and would make someone fine pets. For their sake, if anyone out there can take them, please let us know. Thanks.

I find the beer recipe has kept the ants off of my terrace… Still an odd one or two but nothing like it was before.. Also keeps everything else away too!!

My Technogas calor oven is not working – the gas supply is coming through well no problem there but after the oven is lit and the flame is apparent after you release the knob that you have been holding in for some minutes the flame will not stay in – I would be very grateful if someone could recommend a person to fix it for me – the grill and the rings on top all work. What’s on-Phoenix Cl ub to Gibraltar
The Phoenix Club are off on their next shopping trip to Gibraltar on Friday the 1st July and we have a few seats available.

We have pick ups at at the A1 Garden Centre, Torre del Mar bus station and finally at Algarrobo Lidl at 08.30.  The bus is parked in Morrisons car park and we leave Gibraltar at 16.30.  Due to visa restrictions on entering Gibraltar, please advise if you are a non EU citizen when you book.  Also it is important to remember to bring with you your EHIC card, just in case, and passports are essential.  On the way to Gibraltar we stop to spend a penny and for coffee.

Due to an increase in coach fares we have increased our prices by €1 and we would greatly appreciate if payment was made before the journey.

The price?  €12pp includes a €1 gratuity for the driver.  Children under 12 can join us for 1/2 price.   Still the best value on the coast!
Early booking is recommended if you like a particular place, as seat numbers are allocated on a first come, first served basis.  Plenty to see in Gibraltar apart from the shopping!
