Recommendations & Requests
Recommendation for SPW Construction: We’ve had recourse to SPW – Scott Wilson and his team – on several occasions for various jobs, which have all given us satisfaction beyond expectations.
The first time, was in regard to a problem of rising damp that no less than 3 other so-called professionals attempted to repair, but couldn’t. Scott did the job – over two years ago – the results were brilliant, and haven’t altered since then, damp spots, dark green mold all gone forever.
This time we had to replace our fiberglass swimming pool. Scott arranged for everything: purchase of the new pool; delivery with a special crane; tiling; all materials and labour. It was quite a job, but we were basking in the hot sun and crystal-clear water two days ahead of schedule!
Needless to say, my wife and I highly recommend SPW, which means Scott P. Wilson….we prefer to say: “Some People Work.”

Taxi: Hello Digamites, I am looking for recommendations for taxi company I can book in advance to meet family arriving at Malaga airport from England (2 people) and bringing them to our house in Torre del Mar. A return taxi may also be necessary a few days later. Thanks in anticipation Kerry / Torre del Mar

Recommendation: The Care Company. I want to recommend The Care Company based in Competa. During the calima I fell and cracked my pelvis and shattered my arm. When I came out of hospital I needed carers and contacted David Zoodashna who was very helpful. He is bilingual and has English and Spanish carers. They provided a wheelchair and all the other things I needed to make life easier. Apart from my personal needs they did the household chores and shopping etc and he acted for me with the health service.
They are all unfailingly cheerful and efficient. For hourly care they cover Axarquia and for full time 24 hour care the whole of Spain. They have been a godsend and I cannot recommend them highly enough. Contact David 657969710

SPAIN
Consumer Price Index in Spain jumps to 10.2% in June, the highest figure since 1985: Inflation continues to be one of the greatest headaches for the Spanish government. After ending May at 8.7%, four points higher than in April, the Consumer Price Index for June stands at 10.2%, the highest rate since April 1985. The rise in fuel, food and non-alcoholic drinks, and increased charges at hotels, cafés and restaurants are the main cause.
– The figure is higher than all market forecasts and places the economy and the government in an awkward position as the measures taken so far to alleviate the rising cost of living appear to have had no impact on inflation.
– The data for June has been released in advance and does not detail the cost of individual products. However, in May it was obvious how much these had gone up. The price of vegetable oil had risen by nearly 45% compared with a year before, bread was 12.6% more expensive, eggs had gone up by 25% and cereals 16%. The pandemic increased poverty to 21.7% of the population, the highest figure in the last five years: The population living below the poverty line last year, with income data from 2020, rose to 21.7%. More than one in five people in Spain. This is the highest figure in the last five years, since 2016, with an increase that, however, is not as pronounced as that which occurred in the last financial crisis. Child poverty increases to 28.9% from 27.4% previously. The rest of the indicators, such as the material shortage or the difficulty in reaching the end of the month, do refer to 2021 and one piece of information stands out above all: the maximum in the historical series of energy poverty last year, with 14.3% of the population in homes that cannot maintain an adequate temperature at home. The PP party criticizes that a minor of 12 years “is prohibited from smoking, drinking and driving” but is now allowed “to proceed with a sex change”: {Translation in full}
– The deputy secretary of Social Policies of the Popular Party, Carmen Navarro, has criticised this Wednesday the new “Trans and LGTBI People’s Rights Law” recently approved by the Government in the Council of Ministers, claiming that the text implies an “absolute lack of protection for minors from the age of 12”.
– “A minor under 18 years of age is prohibited from smoking, drinking and driving, but can go to the Civil Registry and the Gender units to change their sex”, the PP leader denounced in the colloquium ‘Ganas de Orgullo’ organised by Nuevas Generaciones, in which the party’s Secretary of Culture, Jaime de los Santos, and the national president of NNGG, Beatriz Fanjul, also took part.
– According to Navarro, the new draft of the Trans Law “will generate great concern among many parents” and he stressed the responsibility of the public authorities to protect minors “to prevent them from making decisions that cannot be reversed”. “Our party is firmly committed to the protection of minors. The PP believes that the best interests of minors must prevail at all times. And, in this project, this is not effective”, she pointed out.
– The ‘popular’ leader has defended that the PP is “the party of freedom”, which is why it will protect and defend the freedom of “all people, whatever they feel, whoever they love and whoever they love”, according to a press release from the party led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo.
– In this context, Navarro reiterated that the PP will continue to “protect and improve the rights of LGTBI people”, while rejecting “any act of hatred, violence, xenophobia or persecution”.
– He also accused Pedro Sánchez’s government of legislating “at the stroke of a holiday (Pride month) and only thinking of taking care of the demands of his most radical partners”, without taking into account the criticisms of the General Council of the Judiciary or waiting for the report of the Council of State on the law promoted by the Ministry of Equality.
– He also assured that the head of the Executive “is only interested in the impact of his announcements and satisfying Podemos in order to preserve the coalition government” and reminded that the Trans Law “does not have the consensus of feminists or the backing of the PSOE” “At least, not of the traditional PSOE prior to Pedro Sánchez”, he clarified.
– Navarro assured that the PP is against gender self-determination “because of the legal insecurity that the sole requirement of one’s own will implies”, without any other procedure and because, in her opinion, “it makes women invisible and is a step backwards in their rights”.
– Finally, she explained that the bill “contains provisions that contradict the fundamental right to equality” contained in article 14 of the Constitution, “generating situations of positive and therefore indirect discrimination of all non-transsexual women”. ANDALUCIA
The Board will not be able to guarantee the quality of the service of the Pascual hospitals: {Translation}
– Facua spokesman Jesús Yesa regrets that the Junta de Andalucía has not yet been informed of the terms of the million-dollar agreement signed with Pascual. But he is not surprised, in any case, that it has been extended to include, once again, the San Rafael clinic in Cadiz, because “the PP has not deceived anyone, it has enshrined the privatisation of the public health system because it is its management model”, although he recalls that the PSOE was the party that first signed the contract with this firm.
– Yesa considers that “it will mean a loss of users’ rights because the Regional Ministry of Health does not have a sufficient number of inspectors (it only has three in the province and would need 250) or other means to control the provision of services in Pascual’s hospitals, so this will depend on the will of this company”.
– For this reason, the consumer organisation recommends to users that every time they are treated in one of its centres, “they should demand a report detailing, among other aspects, all the care they have received, as well as duly identifying the doctors who have treated them, indicating their full name, professional category and speciality”.
– Facua also reminds that, in the event of any incident at the time of being treated, at any facility, you should file a complaint. If they do not have a complaint book available, as required by law, immediately call the local police and request assistance.
– Finally, Facua reminds that “despite the Junta’s decision to privatise health care in Cadiz, users have the right to free choice of specialist doctor and hospital”, so that the health centre should inform them of the options available to them without forcing them to go to a private centre in Pascual. GRANADA
A tractor-trailer march through Granada in protest at the price of diesel and electricity: {Translation, summary}
– A caravan of tractors, some 400 according to the organisers, began a march through the streets of Granada on Wednesday to protest against the “abusive” prices of fuel and electricity under the slogan “The price of diesel, the ruin of the countryside”.
– The protesters denounce the “exorbitant” rise in agricultural diesel, which is currently at an average of 1.63 euros per litre with peaks of 1.78 at some pumps, as well as the escalation of the electricity bill which has not been contained despite the latest measures taken by the Government. CORDOBA
Medina Azahara adds a dramatised itinerary to night visits: {Translation}
– The Medina Azahara Archaeological Ensemble, in Cordoba, has added “a new attraction to the usual night visits” to the ancient Caliphate citadel of the tenth century, through the possibility of “enjoying a dramatised itinerary for summer nights on Fridays and Saturdays, between 2 July and 10 September, with two daily shows, between 20.45 and 22.00 hours and from 22.15 to 23.30 hours.
– On this occasion, as reported by the Junta de Andalucía in a note, the dramatised activity will take visitors to the ancient palatine city “on a journey through time around the year 967, during the reign of al-Hakam II, where a chief of the guard, Abu Amir, will accompany and escort us throughout the dramatised visit”.
– The aim of this activity is to “bring to life some of the most emblematic areas of Medina Azahara, where we will be able to meet different characters who will tell us about and show us these places”. In fact, during the tour “visitors will be welcomed by the army general Qasim Ibn Tumlus, in the Upper Basilical Hall, where he will explain the importance of this place as the nerve centre of the administration and military organisation of the Caliphate”.– The visit will continue afterwards and “a stop will be made at the House of Ja’far, where we will meet the vizier and trusted man of the caliph, who will let us know what his tasks, functions and concerns were”.
– Furthermore, during this unique journey through the Alcazar of the Caliphate city, “as well as enjoying the explanations of our guide Abu Amir, we will have the opportunity to understand the magnitude and importance of Medina Azahara, thanks to our meeting with one of the palace servants, who will tell us about a complex network of essential maintenance tasks, which, in addition to the political and administrative tasks, were carried out in the court of the Caliph”.
– These dramatised night-time visits to Medina Azahara will take place twice a night every Friday and Saturday in July, August and September, in the latter case until the 10th, with an estimated duration of one hour and 15 minutes each and with a limited capacity of 30 people per visit. Participation in this activity is free and open to anyone interested, subject to prior registration, through the ARES Booking System. Serena Williams loses at Wimbledon in 1st match in a year: Returning to the site of her last singles match, which she had to stop after less than a set because of an injury on June 29, 2021, and seven of her major championships, the 40-year-old Williams came within two points of victory. But she could not finish the job against an opponent making her Wimbledon debut and bowed out with a 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7) loss to 115th-ranked Harmony Tan of France. Photo: AP. FINANCIAL
The Euribor is close to 1% in June, its highest level in a decade:
– As a result of this increase, the installments of variable mortgages that have to be reviewed with this data will become more expensive again. In the case of an average mortgage of 150,000 euros, for 25 years and interest at Euribor plus 1%, the loan installment will increase by more than 1,400 euros per year.
– The estimates are not at all flattering. The 12-month Euribor will end 2022 this year at 1.90% and will shoot up to 2.20% in 2023, according to the latest Bankinter estimates contained in its strategy report for the third quarter.
