Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

Editor’s Comment: Sorry for posting the inaccurate article yesterday regarding automobile MOT tests. I was fooled by a false article from a source I have previously mentioned relies heavily on Artificial Intelligence (AI) created content. When I Googled the headline, I found other similar articles in Spanish news outlets, so I went with it. As AI written articles now dominate the news, more of these false articles are bound to appear. I will do my best to avoid them, and will make propmt corrections if and when this happens again. -Ed.

Spain accounted for more than a third of the cocaine seized in the EU in 2024: {Trans, summary}
– Spanish authorities intercepted 124 tons of cocaine in 2024, which is equivalent to 37% of all drugs seized in the European Union during that year, according to the European Drug Report 2026, which warns of the high availability of narcotics in the bloc and the growing sophistication of drug trafficking networks.
– The report, presented this Tuesday by the EU Drugs Agency (EUDA), also places Spain, France and Belgium as the main points of cocaine seizure in Europe, together concentrating 67% of the 330 tons seized in the Union during 2024.
– Although the total volume of cocaine seized decreased compared to the previous year, the European agency highlights that the number of seizures increased, a trend it attributes to the use of smaller and fragmented shipments by criminal organizations to make detection more difficult.
– Production of this substance in South America remains at record highs, and wastewater analyses show increased consumption in more than half of the European cities analyzed.
– The document also highlights Spain’s role in the European cannabis market. Spanish authorities seized 206 tons of cannabis resin and accounted for 75% of all marijuana plants seized in the European Union last year. ANDALUCÍA

The PP and Vox hold their first meeting in Andalusia to negotiate a possible government agreement– A Nothing-Burger: {Trans, summary}
– Almost at the last minute, given that the constitution of the Andalusian Parliament is being celebrated this Thursday after the elections of May 17, the PP and Vox have finally held a first meeting to begin negotiating a possible agreement for the investiture of Juanma Moreno and the formation of the future Government of the XIII legislature.
– The meeting to discuss a “possible agreement for the governance of Andalusia,” both parties stated, took place in a “cordial atmosphere.” Both sides “agreed to continue dialogue in the coming days to explore the possibility of reaching an agreement.” The meeting took place at the former Hospital de las Cinco Llagas and was attended by “representatives” from both the PP and Vox, led by Moreno himself and the Vox spokesperson, Manuel Gavira.
– Moreno asserted this Tuesday that the outcome of these negotiations, about which no further information has been released, will “obviously” depend on “the attitudes, boldness, and willingness to compromise” of both parties. In any case, he said, his group is confident of reaching a “reasonable and fair agreement that represents the general interest of the Andalusian people,” who, in his view, want a “stable and moderate” government. VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA

Water Cuts Schedule: {Trans, summary}
– Improvement works on the water network will require the suspension of the water supply during the night of Wednesday, June 10th to Thursday, June 11th, in several areas of Vélez-Málaga
– From 00:00 to 12:00 it will be necessary to suspend the supply in Barrio de La Legión, Villas de Madrid, Puerta Nueva, Real Bajo and the area around Parque Federico García Lorca, as well as the Arroyo Hondo area.
– Aqualia advises residents to ensure that no taps are left running during the water supply interruption to prevent unnecessary water loss. – “The mediation process on Ukraine is currently on hold. HEALTH

New week of medical strike in Malaga- more than 5,800 doctors are called to strike from June 15 to 19: {Trans, summary}
– Malaga healthcare faces one new week of medical strike,
the fifth so far this year. Since last February, doctors across the country have stopped for a week a month and will do so again June 15 to 19 to show its rejection of the draft Framework Statute prepared by the Ministry of Health and demand its own text that recognizes the particularities of the medical profession.
– The week of strike will also start with one “large state concentration” in Madrid on Monday, June 15, at 12:00 p.m., in front of the Ministry of Health. The protest calls on doctors and physicians from all communities to move to the capital to show their rejection of a reform that, according to what they denounce, “continues to ignore the historical demands of the profession”. Health authorities digitize drug verification and eliminate the use of box cutters in pharmacies: {Trans, summary}
– The Council of Ministers approved on Tuesday a new legal framework for the verification of medicines and for this purpose it implements a digital system that replaces the traditional pharmaceutical cutter that, until now, cut the sealing coupon to send ‘afterwards’ to the Administration for reimbursement.
– At a press conference, the Minister of Health, Mónica García, explained that the measure aims to eliminate the tamper-evident coupon: “That thing that pharmacists used to do when you arrived at the pharmacy to pick up a medication, where they had to cut a small piece of the cardboard and stick it on a sheet of paper. We are going to eliminate that.”
– The reform takes a further step towards replacing the seal coupon with the unique identifier as the system for identifying medicines dispensed under the National Health System.
– Both mechanisms will coexist until the implementation of the Spanish Medicines Verification System is completed and the operational readiness of the information systems of the autonomous communities is guaranteed. SPORTS

Tennis News- The Return of Serena Williams :
– Under the late afternoon sun, as the breeze swirled in west London and without an empty seat in sight, Serena Williams returned to a competitive tennis court. By the time the shadow of the prestigious Queen’s Club had crept across the grass, covering the lines, she had secured her first victory in four years. Alongside doubles partner Victoria Mboko, the Canadian teenager 25 years her junior, the 44-year-old Williams defeated the third seeds Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe, 7-6, 6-2.
– With it, a remarkable tennis comeback was kicked, gently, into motion. The 23-time grand slam champion had not competed since the 2022 US Open, the tournament that followed her announcement of “evolving” away from the sport. When she returned to the glare of competition, with nowhere to hide in front of 9,000 eager fans, there were lots of errors; missed forehands, shanked overheads, and understandable rust. Williams had fun, and even admitted to some nerves, but gave herself a grade of “C minus”, with plenty of room for improvement. Full article: https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/tennis/…

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

AI data centres are growing so fast that standard construction can’t keep up– Meta is installing chips in enormous temporary canvas structures powered by their own energy to gain time over traditional data centres: {Trans, summary}
– Meta is accelerating its artificial intelligence push by erecting large temporary waterproof canvas structures on data centre campuses, such as at its Prometheus site near Columbus, Ohio. These allow rapid deployment of servers and chips in months rather than years, bypassing slow traditional construction. The approach uses on site power generation via gas turbines to overcome energy constraints. This mirrors past tactics by Tesla under Elon Musk for faster production. It reflects intense pressure to scale computing capacity quickly amid bottlenecks in permits, power and land. Such provisional setups may become more common as the artificial intelligence race intensifies. Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/tecnologia-consumo/facebook/plan-prometheus-mark-zuck…

FINANCIAL

The richest people in Spain pay less tax than the poorest in certain catagories: {Trans, summary}
– The Spanish tax system is progressive. That is, it is designed so that those who earn the most are also those who pay the most taxes. However, this progressive system breaks down when the wealthiest have to foot the bill.
– According to Fedea, the country’s economic elite allocates 25.6% of their income and spending to paying taxes. A percentage (the effective average rate) that is even lower than the 26.2% paid by the most modest taxpayers and that is below the country’s average.
– The differences are explained by the different ways in which people earn money. While most people live off their work, the richest obtain a significant part of their income from capital- that is, from dividends, rental income, the sale of shares, or the profits of the companies in which they participate. The taxation of capital incomes is lower than that of labour income, which explains why the wealthiest pay a lower effective tax rate than the poorest. Furthermore, the highest salaries have an exempt portion from Social Security contributions, which is not the case for the vast majority of wages.
– However, the balance of what each later receives in the form of services or benefits is very different. Low-income households receive much more than they contribute in taxes, while the balance for the richest is exactly the opposite.
