SPAIN

More than a million people gather in Madrid to celebrate a historic Eucharist: {Trans, summary}
– The capital of Spain—and Spain itself—experienced a historic day this morning. The urban axis between Cibeles Square and Paseo de la Castellana was transformed into a gigantic open-air temple where more than 1.2 million faithful—7,000 of them from Andalusia—gathered for the Corpus Christi Mass, presided over by Pope Leo XIV.
– The massive public response shattered all the organizers’ expectations; in fact, the pressure of the crowd forced security forces to close access three hours earlier than planned, repeating the scenario of the previous day’s youth vigil and leaving thousands of people with digital credentials outside. Train Accident Investigation Moves At Snail’s Pace– The contracts have only now been awarded, still pending final approval, to the two companies that will analyze the Adamuz railway lines: {Trans, summary}
– The Railway Accident Investigation Commission (CIAF ) has provisionally awarded contracts to metallurgical laboratories for the analysis of the rails fractured in the Adamuz train accident, where 46 people died and more than 120 were injured on the afternoon of Sunday, January 18. The judicial authority must now assess the “suitability of the award” and “grant its approval for the final contract award.” The selection and contracting process for the laboratories “is in its final stage,” following a meeting of the Contracting Board on May 20. Rail Traffic Down After Adamuz Accident: {Trans, summary}
– Rail use in Spain decreased sharply in the first quarter of 2026 following a series of serious train accidents and daily incidents. Passenger transport fell by 14.4 percent compared with the previous quarter and by 12 percent year-on-year, resulting in the loss of 21.07 million travellers. This represents the worst figure since the third quarter of 2022. Goods transport performed even worse (see graph), dropping 17.36 percent from the prior quarter and 11.42 percent year-on-year, with 633,864 tonnes lost.
– These declines are the most severe in years and exceed even the mobility restrictions seen during the 2020 covid-19 pandemic. The data highlight a significant reduction in overall rail use after the Adamuz and Gelida accidents. Source, Spanish: https://www.libertaddigital.com/libremercado/2026-06-07/el-transporte…

ANDALUCÍA

The Andalusian Parliament will hold the inaugural session of its 13th legislature this coming Thursday, June 11: {Trans, summary}
– This session will begin after the regional elections held on May 17, in which the PP-A (People’s Party of Andalusia) repeated its 2022 victory, although it was left with only 53 seats this time, two short of repeating an absolute majority like the one it held in the previous legislature. Therefore, no group starts this new stage of Andalusian autonomy with a sufficient majority on its own.
– The People’s Party (PP) has publicly confirmed its intention to contact Vox and begin negotiations following the May 17th elections, as the two parties together would hold an absolute majority in the regional parliament. Furthermore, the two parties have already reached coalition agreements in recent months in the other three regions that have held elections since last December: Extremadura, Aragon, and Castile and León. In all three regions, the PP won the elections but without securing an absolute majority, and subsequently made pacts with Vox to form successful coalitions. The Parliament of Andalusia begins its new legislature on Thursday with a majority of women and 55 first-time members of parliament: {Trans, summary}
– The Parliament of Andalusia will inaugurate the 13th Legislature of the autonomous community on Thursday, June 11, with 55 female members out of 109 seats, a female majority not seen in an inaugural session since the 2015 regional elections. Furthermore, the Andalusian Parliament will have 55 “new faces” as a result of the May 17 elections, compared to the members of the previous legislature.
– The PSOE-A and Adelante Andalucía, with 15 and five members respectively, are the groups with more women than men in their parliamentary groups. The remaining parties have 26 women in the case of the PP-A , 7 in Vox, and 2 in Por Andalucía.
– On the other hand, the People’s Party (PP) will have the most new members of parliament in the next legislature, a total of 22, especially in the province of Málaga, where eight of the party’s nine members are new. The PSOE-A (Socialist Party of Andalusia) has added 17 new faces, including its general secretary, María Jesús Montero. Vox renews six of the party’s deputies, among them the debut of the two top candidates for Córdoba and Granada, Paula Badanelli and Beatriz Sánchez Agustino. – Starting this June, the bus company Ruiz y Ávila will officially manage the Corumbela-Málaga, Canillas de Albaida-Málaga, and Canillas de Albaida-Vélez-Málaga routes.
– This contract award guarantees substantial improvements to daily service and a reduction in the average age of the vehicle fleet, which will directly impact the comfort and safety of users in the region. MALAGA PROVINCE

Driving schools in Malaga are experiencing bottlenecks: almost 18,000 students are waiting to take their practical exam: {Trans, summary}
– More than 17,600 students in Malaga, almost 5,000 more than in May 2025, are waiting to take their practical driving test in Malaga. The shortage of examiners is the main cause exacerbating the problem, and the president of the Malaga Provincial Association of Driving Schools ( APAE ), Antonio Martín, describes it as “critical.” Martín confirms that the city currently has only 25 examiners to conduct these types of tests and that nine vacancies remain to be filled. “They’re going to give us two, most likely, by the middle or end of the year,” he adds. Crime is down in Malaga, although cybercrime and rape continue to rise: {Trans, summary}
– Crime fell by 1.5 percent in Malaga province during the first quarter of 2026, according to data released by the Ministry of the Interior. A total of 23,294 offences were reported, compared with 23,644 in the same period the previous year. This overall reduction was driven by a 3.6 percent decline in conventional crime, even as cybercrimes rose by 7.2 percent to 5,029 cases and a 25 percent increase in sexual assaults with penetration, reaching 40 reported cases, almost matching the full-year total for 2021. Computer frauds rose 10.8 percent, while vehicle thefts increased by 5 percent to 479 incidents.
– By contrast, most other categories showed improvement. Thefts dropped 4.7 percent, all types of robbery declined, drug trafficking fell 23.9 percent, and serious crimes such as homicides and kidnappings also decreased.
– Among municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants, crime rose in several areas including Alhaurin el Grande and Antequera, but fell in Malaga city, Marbella, Fuengirola, Rincon de la Victoria (-9.4 percent), and others.
– Of particular concern, rapes increased 80 percent in the Malaga capital.
– The figures present a mixed picture, with gains in traditional crime offset by rises in sexual offences and online fraud. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/criminalidad-baja-malaga-pese-ciberdelitos_0_2006941011.html

TORROX

Socialists Complain About Dirt & Neglect in Torrox: {Trans, summary}
– Mari Nieves Ramírez {pic}, the Socialist municipal spokesperson in Torrox, has criticised what she describes as serious neglect and dirt across the town. She says residents, traders and business owners are complaining about overflowing bins, waste build-up, closed underground containers, unmaintained plots and poor cleaning in several areas, and she believes the problem has worsened in recent months.
– Ramírez argues that the cleaning service is overstretched because of staff shortages and the failure to replace workers who are off sick, and says this is damaging the town’s image and tourism. The opposition will ask for an extraordinary council meeting to review the cleaning contract, assess waste collection, and consider a special commission on municipal cleaning. The opposition also considers that privatisation of the service has not achieved the expected results, and calls for the immediate introduction of an emergency cleaning plan, reinforcements during periods of higher tourist demand, and an increase in the human and material resources assigned to the service.
– It also wants the long-closed local waste drop-off and recycling facility (Clean Point) reopened, a sustainable cleaning plan prepared, pest-control measures introduced, and more staff and equipment deployed, especially during tourist peaks. Ramírez says the service costs more than six million euros a year, yet residents are getting a poor service and paying more than ever. The incident, which occurred around 12:00 pm, caused moments of great tension in one of the busiest areas of the Nerja coastline. According to SUR, the man suddenly collapsed while out for a walk. From Fuengirola to Vietnam: a pheasant born in Malaga will help recover a species on the verge of extinction: {Trans, summary}
– Summary (170 words): Bioparc Fuengirola has achieved a notable conservation milestone with a female Edwards’s pheasant, born in its Malaga facilities two years ago, now relocated to Vietnam as part of an international reintroduction project.
– After preparation in Germany with other selected birds under the European Endangered Species Programme, the pheasant has entered the first phase of the “Bring Back Blue” initiative. This marks the first time a species bred and protected at the park takes part in wild reintroduction efforts, highlighting decades of collaborative work among zoos and conservation bodies.
– The Edwards’s pheasant, native to central Vietnam’s forests, is critically endangered and possibly extinct in the wild for over twenty years due to habitat loss, poaching and war impacts. Selected for genetic and health criteria, these birds will adapt, breed and produce offspring for eventual release, aiming to restore populations and protect habitats while raising local awareness. The Smartphone Generation Is Not Producing Tradesmen– A bricklayer with over 30 years of experience says, “There are more labourers than ever, but they are not skilled.”: {Trans}
– The Spanish construction sector has changed substantially in recent decades, marked by the 2008 housing bubble crisis and the current housing problem. Manuel Armando, a bricklayer with over 30 years of experience, has discussed the challenges facing this sector and the need for labour on the podcast Sector Oficios, where he reviewed his professional career and addressed the difficulties in finding qualified workers.
– Armando, known on social media as Bricomandy, explains that after the 2008 crisis, he went from working on large construction sites to focusing on renovations. “That’s when my life changed completely, because I started seeing construction in a different way. I also acquired new talents, such as finding leaks,” he recalls.
– Regarding the current situation in the sector, the bricklayer admitted that “things are complicated right now. They say there’s no labour. There’s plenty of labour, more than ever, but not qualified labour. Qualified labour is gone.” In his opinion, “people who want to learn and people who want to teach are disappearing. That old dynamic is gone.”
– Manuel Armando points out that in the past there were easier ways to start working as an apprentice in the trade, such as the apprenticeship contract. “That was great for learning, because you could afford to have an apprentice, teach them, and not pay a fortune in social security. Now you have to pay the same amount to someone who knows the trade as to someone who doesn’t,” he comments.
– He clarifies that “it’s only fair that if you don’t know anything, you earn something in line with what you produce. It’s not about exploiting you, but if you’re just watching and don’t know how to do things, you can’t earn the same as someone who is actually producing.” As an example, he notes that the salary difference between an apprentice and a skilled journeyman is less than 300 euros per month. “There’s almost no difference between a very good professional and someone who is still learning,” he argues.
Furthermore, he points out that there are no incentives to encourage hiring young people to learn the trade, so in the end, “you have to pay out of your own pocket to teach them.”
