SPAIN

Brussels asks Spain to collect more VAT and end the reduced rate for hotels and restaurants: {Trans, summary}
– The European Commission believes Spain is relying too heavily on taxing workers through income tax and social security contributions, while not collecting enough through VAT and environmental taxes. One of its main suggestions is to review the reduced 10% VAT rate used by restaurants and hotels.
– Brussels argues that these lower VAT rates are expensive for the public finances and mainly benefit people who spend the most on hospitality services. According to Commission figures, reduced VAT rates cost Spain more than €25 billion in tax revenue during 2023, with over €5.5 billion linked to commerce, tourism and small businesses.
– Although Spain has stayed out of the EU’s deficit penalty system and has made progress in repaying money received during the banking crisis, the Commission warns that government spending could exceed agreed limits in 2026.
– The report also points to several longer-term problems facing Spain, including a shortage of affordable housing, excessive bureaucracy, weak productivity, concerns about the electricity grid and child poverty. To tackle the housing crisis, Brussels wants more homes to be built, planning rules simplified {Say What? It’s the EU’s green-mandates for Agenda 2030 that are introducing many new restrictions on home construction & complicating planning commission procedures more than ever. Hipocresía! -Ed.} and more affordable rental housing made available. The PP calls for the resignation of the director of the Civil Guard and Marlaska after the ‘Leire case’- “It is a state crime”:
– The PP has called for the resignation of Civil Guard Director General Mercedes González and Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska following developments in the Leire case. PP spokesperson Alma Ezcurra {pic} claims that evidence contained in a Civil Guard UCO report shows that former PSOE member Leire Díez met with González and sought action against officers involved in sensitive investigations. Ezcurra argues that the case goes far beyond an isolated controversy and accuses the Government of using state institutions to protect political interests and obstruct investigations.
– She also criticised Marlaska, claiming he has failed in his responsibilities and should step down alongside González. Ezcurra repeatedly linked the allegations to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, arguing that all of the reported scandals ultimately lead back to him.
– Meanwhile, PP deputy secretary Cuca Gamarra accused Marlaska of misleading the public after previously stating that González had not met with Díez. The Interior Minister rejected the accusations, defending González’s past performance and professionalism. He stated that he was unaware of any attempt to interfere in investigations and would not have tolerated such actions had they occurred. Pedro’s Brother, David Sánchez, Avoids Prosecutors’ Questions in Brief Court Appearance, with explainers: {Trans, summary}
– David Sánchez spent just over ten minutes before the court and chose to answer only questions from his own lawyer, avoiding questioning from prosecutors and other parties involved in the case.
– The carefully controlled testimony focused on explaining that the Performing Arts Office was not a physical office but an administrative category. Sánchez claimed he had no role in changing his job title, only learned of it after the decision had been made, and received no salary increase as a result.
– He also denied influencing the recruitment of his friend Luis Carrero, despite an email appearing to refer to Carrero taking up a position before the appointment process had concluded. Sánchez described this as a misunderstanding and insisted he had no authority over the recruitment process.
– Because all questions came from his own defence, the hearing largely consisted of Sánchez presenting his version of events without facing direct challenges from the prosecution. As a result, several key claims, including his lack of involvement in personnel decisions and his explanation of the Carrero email, were not tested under adversarial questioning. Source, Spanish: https://www.europapress.es/extremadura/noticia-david-sanchez-declara-oficina-artes-escenica-no-era-despacho-ventanilla-edificio-fisico-20260604103254.html

Explainer 1: What is David Sánchez accused of?
– He is being investigated over allegations including:
*Possible irregularities in how he was appointed in 2017 to a publicly funded role in the Badajoz provincial administration.
*Whether the creation and later restructuring of his post (including the “Office of Performing Arts”) followed proper administrative procedure or was tailored to fit him.
*Whether there was any undue influence, favouritism, or misuse of public resources in the design or evolution of his position.
*Scrutiny of related appointments and relationships in the same department, including the hiring and role of a colleague, Luis Carrero, are ongoing.
*Questions raised by prosecutors about whether administrative changes had genuine institutional justification or were influenced by personal or political connections need answers.
– He has denied accusations, and in Spanish procedure the David’s case status is “investigado”, which means a judge is examining whether there is enough evidence to proceed, not that guilt has been established.

Explainer 2: Spanish Law. Many foreigners are surprised to learn that defendants in Spanish criminal cases can choose to answer only questions from their own lawyer while refusing questions from prosecutors. Under Spanish law, an accused person has a strong right against self-incrimination and cannot be forced to answer questions that may harm their defence. As a result, a defendant may remain silent, answer all parties, or answer only selected questions. Critics argue this allows carefully controlled testimony without cross-examination. Supporters say it protects fundamental legal rights. Judges are expected to assess the defendant’s statements alongside documents, witness evidence and other material before reaching conclusions.

TORRE DEL MAR

Night of San Juan in Torre del Mar: {Trans, summary}
– Torre del Mar will celebrate its 2026 Night of San Juan on 23 June on El Copo beach, with a programme combining free concerts, maritime tradition, popular activities and fireworks. The event will once again bring together residents and visitors for one of the busiest nights in the festive calendar of the Vélez area.
– The music programme will feature Raule, a tribute to Manuel Carrasco, and Óliver Gil as the main attractions. These concerts will be joined by the traditional sardine spit roast, the Júas competition, and a fireworks display, one of the most anticipated moments of the night.
– Music will begin at around 21:00 with the tribute to Manuel Carrasco, opening the evening programme on El Copo beach. At 22:00, Raule will perform, one of the headline acts of this edition. He will appear in Torre del Mar as part of a programme designed for all audiences and aimed at strengthening the festive atmosphere by the sea. From midnight, around 00:00, the party will continue with Óliver Gil, who will close the musical programme.
– In addition to the concerts, traditional elements will be maintained, including a free sardine roast, one of the local highlights of the celebration. A fireworks display will light up the coastline during the early hours of San Juan.
– The Júas competition will also take place, focusing on community creativity involving local groups and associations.
{A “Júas competition” is a local tradition in parts of Andalucía, especially along the Costa del Sol, linked to the Noche de San Juan celebrations. “Júas” (also called “Judas” figures in some areas) are large, often handmade effigies, usually made of wood, cardboard, cloth, and other materials. They are dressed up to represent people, characters, or sometimes satirical versions of public figures. -Ed.}
– A maritime market will run from 20 to 23 June on Paseo de Larios, with stalls, entertainment and activities aimed at visitors and residents. Source, Spanish: https://www.laopiniondemalaga.es/axarquia/2026/06/03/noche-san-juan-torre-del-mar-2026-conciertos-raule-oliver-gil-130979421.html

GRANADA

Fishy Festival Food– 100 kilos of food were removed from the Corpus Christi festival in Granada for failing to comply with health and consumer regulations: {Trans, summary}
– The Civil Guard in Granada, through officers of the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA), carried out an inspection operation this Wednesday at various establishments located within the Corpus Christi fairgrounds in Granada. As a result of the inspections conducted by city inspectors, several irregularities were detected, leading to the initiation of eleven administrative proceedings. Consequently, approximately 100 kilograms of food were seized and destroyed due to various violations of health and consumer regulations.
– According to a statement released by the Civil Guard, five of the operations were carried out as part of fisheries inspections, resulting in the destruction of 24 kilograms of fishery products, including tuna, squid, and clams, due to irregularities in transport and failure to meet the organoleptic conditions required for their sale and consumption. Lawmakers backed the new government in a 49-30 vote in the 90-member assembly.
– It is Jansa’s fourth term in office. The political veteran is an admirer of U.S. President Donald Trump and was a close ally of former populist Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who was defeated in a landslide election in April. – The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.7% to close at 51,561.93. The S&P 500 rose 0.4%, while the Nasdaq Composite finished with a small loss as semiconductor stocks came under heavy pressure.

Tennis News- Qualifier Maja Chwalinska makes French Open history after beating Diana Shnaider to enter women’s singles final:
– Poland’s Maja Chwalinska made French Open history on Thursday after defeating Diana Shnaider 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 to setup a women’s singles final against Mirra Andreeva. The 24-year-old, ranked 114 in the world, thus becomes the first Qualifier to enter the Roland Garros final in the professional era.
– She now faces 19-year-old Russian Andreeva, who beat Marta Kostyuk in straight sets in the other semi-final on Thursday, in the final of the clay-court Grand Slam on Saturday. And should Chwalinska end what has been a dream run in Paris so far with another victory, she will become only the second woman after Emma Raducanu at the 2021 US Open to win a major as a Qualifier in the ‘Open Era’.
– The 24-year-old said her run in the French capital was “like a dream”, moments after beating 25th seed Shnaider, who a day before eliminated world number one Aryna Sabalenka.

Football News- France stunned by Ivory Coast in World Cup warmup, Spain held by Iraq:
– Guéla Doué scored a goal and set up the winning strike as Ivory Coast surprised France — and Doué’s brother in the French dugout — with a 2-1 victory in a World Cup warmup match Thursday.
– Spain — another World Cup favorite — was held 1-1 at home by Iraq in La Coruña. Playing without forwards Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, Spain took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute on Ferran Torres’ goal. Merchas Doski’s left-footed strike from just outside the box beat goalkeeper Joan Garcia to equalize before the half-hour mark. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

The UN warns that AI threatens the natural resources of billions of people: {Trans, summary}
– A new UN report warns that the rapid growth of artificial intelligence could place enormous pressure on some of the world’s most important natural resources. By 2030, the water used annually by AI-related data centres could equal the basic drinking water needs of 1.3 billion people, while electricity consumption could reach levels comparable to the needs of hundreds of millions of people. The report argues that public discussion focuses too heavily on carbon emissions while overlooking AI’s growing demand for water, land and raw materials. Data centres require huge amounts of electricity and cooling water, and many are located in regions already facing water stress.
– Researchers also warn that efficiency improvements may not reduce overall environmental damage. As AI becomes cheaper and more powerful, usage increases, potentially driving even greater consumption of energy and water.
– The study highlights additional concerns, including rising electronic waste and the environmental impact of mining critical minerals needed for AI infrastructure. It also notes that the environmental costs are often borne by local communities, while the benefits are enjoyed elsewhere. HANTAVIRUS UPDATES

The first Spaniard infected with hantavirus is discharged from the hospital after several negative PCR tests (of questionable reliability, see note) and days without symptoms: {Trans, summary}
– The first Spanish citizen to test positive for hantavirus after being evacuated from the cruise ship affected by the outbreak is now at home. According to sources at the Ministry of Health, the patient was discharged from the hospital this Thursday after testing negative in two separate PCR tests and having been symptom-free for several days. Furthermore, according to the protocol updated this morning by the Public Health Commission, this person is no longer required to quarantine, having recovered from the infection.
– The other Spanish patient who tested positive on May 25 will have to remain isolated in the Madrid hospital, as he still had a slight fever this morning, meaning he has not yet reached the “clinical recovery” that, along with a negative test, determines that there is no longer a risk of transmitting the disease. According to the protocol updated this Thursday, positive cases will be discharged after three consecutive days without symptoms compatible with the virus and after two negative results in PCR tests performed on urine and oropharyngeal swabs with a minimum of 48 hours between each one.
{Note: Why are they cutting corners with such critical testing? In clinical practice, blood (serum, plasma, or whole blood) is generally the preferred specimen for PCR. For most patients, serology (IgM and IgG antibody testing on blood) remains the primary diagnostic method, with PCR used mainly for very early infection or strain confirmation. Hantavirus RNA can sometimes be detected in urine, but this is unreliable. Some laboratories accept “swab” or saliva-type specimens, but these are not standard frontline specimens for hantavirus diagnosis. Hantaviruses are not primarily respiratory tract viruses in the way influenza, COVID-19, or RSV are. Therefore, viral loads in the throat may be low or absent. A negative oropharyngeal swab PCR has limited value for ruling out hantavirus infection. Thus, PCR tests are a calculated risk for hantavirus testing, somebody decided it was sufficient, for what, to save the price of a few blood tests!?! I would not have taken that bet. Maybe in a 3rd world country with limited medical testing facilities this would be understandable. But with modern facilities, a few extra blood tests would seem justifiable considering the serious risk involved. -Ed. Ref, Dutch: https://lci.rivm.nl/richtlijnen/orthohantavirusinfectie }
