Beware pickpockets in Nerja!
We were walking along that very busy street in Nerja (parallel with the sea) with lots of restaurants, pulling two small suitcases.

I noticed that two people seemed to be trying to get past my partner, they were very close, and I told him they were trying to pass.

When he looked around they both stopped and started studying very closely a map one of them was carrying.

They were middle-aged, I thought they were Spanish.

A few minutes later he found his wallet, which had been in his back pocket

(OK never again) was gone.

Didn’t feel a thing, and his hand pulling suitcase was in front of pocket.
Can’t be sure it was them but seems most likely scenario.

So be careful!   CF.

 

Cat Urgently Needs a Home or Help  pic

I’m on holiday in Alqueria and i have a stray cat here with FIV. He’s so affectionate though, follows me everywhere sits on my lap, he’s eating properly. I was wondering if he could be rehomed or is maybe even a lost cat as he is so friendly? When i arrived he was so skinny and I’m worried he won’t survive once I’m gone. He isn’t the same as the other strays here, he just wants company.

UK Registered Vehicles in Spain

Hope you don’t mind a further question on this but hopefully of general interest.
We are resident in the UK but travel down to southern Spain in our UK registered car and spend the winter 6 months there. Clearly it is not viable to re register the vehicle every 6 months dependent on location! Similar to the previous story the UK no longer issue tax discs. Can anyone advise whether this is also problematic?

What’s On– Trip to Cadiz Province 15^th September 2015 to visit the Roman Ruins

Included in the trip is a visit to Tarifa for lunch and then on to Manilva for a visit to a Brewery with tastings!

Baelo Claudia is an ancient Roman town situated on the Costa de la Luz, some 15km north of Tarifa, next to the town of Bolonia and the beautiful beach.   Its history lies in the trade routes serving Europe and North Africa – the town’s strategic position on the coast near the Straits of Gibraltar made it a crucial stopping-off point between the two continents. The ruins of Baelo Claudia, with its impressive temple, forum and basilica, and especially the large fish-salting factory, show how important the town was.

Deriving its wealth from the fishing industry, Baelo Claudia supplied the popular Roman delicacy garum (fish paste) to the whole Roman Empire. It was thriving at the time of Emperor Claudius (41-45 AD), who gave the town his name.

By the second century the town was in decline and was nearly destroyed by an earthquake. By the sixth century AD, Baelo Claudia was abandoned.
Baelo Claudia is stunningly located, with a backdrop of a golden sandy beach and the blue sea, and has an excellent visitor centre (see below).

The town follows the classic urban planning model of Rome, with streets running from east to west, and north to south; you can still walk along remaining parts of these.  Main attractions to be seen at the site include:

• Basilica
• Theatre
• Thermal Baths
• Temple of Isis
• Aqueducts
• Salting Factories (currently being restored)

Baelo Claudia Visitor Centre

This is housed in a simple, stunning building overlooking the sea; you pass through it before entering the archaeological site. It has interactive displays to explain about the city’s geographical location and context (important nearby cities included Cadiz and Malaga), in terms of shipping routes (both rivers and sea) and other communication within Hispania. You can also learn about society and daily life, including funerary rites and religion, and see the recreation of a Roman bedroom. Baelo Claudia’s economy was based on fishing, so the fish-salting factory – located in the lowest part of the town, right on the beach, for easy delivery of ingredients – was key to its success. With each audio-visual presentation, there are artefacts to complement, such as funerary urns and fishing equipment.

You can walk round the site following the suggested route, which takes you from the museum, past the east aqueduct and towards the salting vats on the seashore (still being restored) Then you can see the forum and the basilica (with many columns intact), followed by administrative buildings and shops. Further along, the path takes you to the market and baths, and finally, at the top of the town, the theatre – with its complex system of doors and passageways, for each section of audience, arranged into three areas by class – and temples.

UK Registered Vehicles in Spain…

In response to Keith’s warning Re UK registered cars.

We fell foul of the law earlier this year whilst staying for four winter months. We live permanently in France and had exported our UK car but not imported and re-registered it to France as we were due to change it for a French car this autumn. We had full French insurance.

Our car disappeared early one morning to the pound, and cutting a very long story short, we ended up paying over 4000€ to re-register it in Spain (Inc new headlights and ITV, fines and fees to the garage). We were told we couldn’t drive it in Spain unless we did, and though our car was entirely legal in France, the police would not accept it. They pulled it because it didn’t have a tax disc, something we do not have in France.

You wanted your horror story Keith, you got it!

Services- Missing Spanish TV Channels
Has anyone else lost a bunch of Spanish terrestrial TV channels this week, including Gol and Disney Channel?

Does anyone know why and how to get them back if possible?

A retune of the telly does nothing. I’m in the campo near Torrox pueblo and use a normal aerial which usually has a good signal. All other channels are there as usual.

We live in Torrox campo & have had one of these filters for a number of years.  The water produced is good & we drink a lot of it.  The downside is that the water that goes in is divided by the process & a lot of it is discarded. The instructions indicate that the waste water be directed into the sink waste pipe & wasted, therefore increased water costs.  We direct ours into a water butt outside & use it on the garden.  No waste that way.  Another downside is that if you have a pump powered water system the pump will keep switching on & off as the tank fills & you draw off water .  This causes increased electricity costs & wear to the pump.  This can be mitigated if you have a handy switch for the pump & turn it off, during the night for instance.  We would not be without our filter but there can be hidden costs.

I wasn’t going to comment on this as I am far from an expert, but as no one else has mentioned the downsides, here goes.

We live on an urbanisation where water is stored in depositos before being distributed, as a result when we had the water lab tested because we seemed to get frequent tummy problems we found that we had no chlorine in the system and bacteria levels were higher than they should be.  We drank bottled water, and still do, but you are using tap water for so many things, washing salads & fruit, cleaning teeth.

We looked into various form of filtration and sterilization and the recommendation we got was  that you can’t beat chlorine.  We have a particulate filter where the water enters the property, then a deposito and a system that injects chlorine as it fills, we test the water every so often and adjust the injection rate to take account of changes that affect it like temperature.  Since we have done this we have found that our health has improved.

What I understand is a reverse osmosis system is great to fit under the kitchen sink for pure drinking water.  I don’t think it is the case that such water is not safe to drink, simply that it filters out everything,  beneficial minerals along with the impurities, so long term, if that was the only water you drank, you may be low on some of these.  As it, and its associated filters, remove all chlorine you should not fit it at the point of entry, just at the point of use.  If you fit it at the point of entry you have untreated water in your pipes and bacteria will just regrow, especially if, like us, you have a part of the house that is not regularly used.

The other issue with reverse osmosis is that the system uses a lot of water.  Systems vary but you will waste somewhere between one and four times the amount of water produced.

So, to summarise, if you want a system to give you chlorine free, pure water at your kitchen sink reverse osmosis is great, if somewhat wasteful, but if you need to disinfect your entire supply you should consider chlorination.  You could, of course, use both.

In reply to Bob A who thought that a simple question would bring forth a simple answer, sorry but it don’t work that way ; starters Bob makes no mention of what water quality he presently has other than“ not treated” so step one obtain a full chemical and bacterial analysis of the water supply – if you don’t know what’s in it you don’t know what you want to / need to remove and also that the analysis will need to remain broadly constant throughout the year. Armed with this information take it to a professional (not a salesman ) the local area water supplier has such people who will have an MSc or PhD in this very deep subject and ask / pay for their advice. Just taking a wild stab in the dark, Bob A and family did not mention spending excessive time on the loo so I am guessing that their water supply is basically potable so another wild stab are we talking taste if so a full RO water treatment would be overkill also RO water is not recommended for drinking and being slightly acidic ( pH 5 or 6 neutral is 7 ) does not taste pleasant as all minerals have been removed. If we are talking taste an in line single point carbon type filter would do the trick and do so more cheaply than a RO unit and if there is a chance of coliform bacteria (E coli etc ) at some point you may also consider a single point Ultra Violet steriliser ; I say single point as it is unlikely that it would be necessary to treat the water you shower in or flush down the loo and I refer you to the opening paragraph as high levels of Legionella pneumophila would indicate otherwise. Also he might care to “Google” water treatments and read up on what organisations like WHO and other such independent bodies (not trade organisations et al) have to say on the subject.Best of luck on your stroll through this little minefield (caveat emptor applies !!! )    Haydn W.

A Big Thank You

I would like to say a big thank you to my very good friends Martyn and Rebecca for not only their support whilst my husband. Charles was in hospital but for staying with me in our home, night and day during his last 48 hours. Airport Strikes (Editor warns…)

Airport workers voted for a general strike at 25 airports in Spain in a mass protest against working conditions and low pay.

Car park staff, luggage belt-operators security, IT and retail and catering staff will all down tools on 25 days from September 15th until the end of the year.

The 24 hour strikes have been set for five days in September, seven days in October, two days in November and 11 days in December, including five consecutive days from December 26th to 30th – dates that will cause maximum disruption to Christmas and New Year travellers.

The dates are:

September 15th, 17th, 22nd, 24th and 29th.

October 1st, 6th, 11th, 15th, 27th, 30th and 31st.

November 3rd and 5th.

And December 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 10th & between 26^th-30th inclusive.

Services – Reverse osmosis water treatment. (Response)

Hello My name is Oscar Pinazo, I am well known around Torrox and Axarquia area for repairing electrical and plumbing as well as fitting Osmosis filtration System.

I have many clients who have had this System fitted and I am sure they would be happy to recommend me as well as the System.

Attached is photo of details of how the System works. I can fit this System all included for under 200 euros. Once the System is fitted there are no running costs apart from an annual service.

I would like to point out that bottled water is actually not very good for health, as chemicals from plastic bottles escape into the water especially in hot conditions when it is being transported in the Spanish sunshine.

Gas Bottles – Legal ?

Maybe in light of Barcelona we should stop selling gas bottles, or at least be careful whom we sell them to. I’m fairly sure it’s illegal anyway.

It might not be much in the grand scheme of things but anything we do can make a small difference.

Services- Reverse osmosis water treatment.Opinions Please 

Like many people living in the campo we are reliant on untreated water. We are considering installing a reverse osmosis treatment system, but have read mixed opinions about this. Some say it is not safe to drink water treated this way for any length of time. Within the EU bottled water sold in the supermarkets must not be treated by the reverse osmosis method. But is this ‘overcompensating’?

Do any Digamites have experience of these systems and, if so, what are your opinions?

Recommendation- Warning re Vehicles

The UK reg car advertised at €260 is a really good buy so long as the buyer ships it to the UK by transporter.

The biggest problem for UK reg cars in Spain now is, for someone classed as ‘residencia’, you are only allowed to bring a UK reg car, registered in your name, into Spain for up to 30 days. The law is quite clear. If you are stopped, it is up to you to prove the car has been in Spain for less than 30 days. Even though it is fully taxed, insured and MOT’d under UK law. You may need a lawyer?

If the Trafico decide you are residencia and the car has been in Spain for more than 30 days there is an on the spot €500 fine. The car is impounded at a cost of €9 per day. You are then instructed to get the car registered on Spanish plates whilst it is still impounded. This could take a while as it will need some modifications, like headlights and speedo. If a towbar has been fitted you may need to provide manufacturers original documentation and certificate of the fitters competency. Similarly with alloys and tyres. You are not allowed to ship the car out of the country. After 6 months, if the change to Spanish plates is not completed the car is crushed and you pay some €1800 for the storage in the pound. I suppose it may be possible for you to decide to have the car crushed much sooner?

This has been in force for several months now and I haven’t heard of any dire stories or any legal challenges in the courts yet? Has anyone?

Recommendation – Bouquet and Recommendation

Sharon and Chris at Casa El Castano

We have just returned from a 2 night stay at Casa El Castano.

The owners Chris and Sharon are incredibly hospitable and nothing is too much trouble for them. The rooms are beautiful and spotlessly clean.  The evening we arrived, Sharon served us a superbly cooked meal on the terrace, overlooking olive groves . The following night, Chris drove us to and from Martos, to spend the evening there. Martos is the nearest town about 20 minutes drive away. It is lively, typically Spanish with a beautiful park and castle and lots of very nice restaurants. Casa El Castano  is set in a peaceful location,  but within easy access for visiting the historic cities of Jean, Baeza and Ubeda.  All well worth a visit.

Just feel that your readers should be aware that a car not taxed or Mot’d in it’s country of registration is illegal to drive here, be it English, German, French or the rest. It might be only 260€ but it is still illegal and not alone. If stopped the Guardia will take it away and crush it.

Queues at Passport Control ??

I flew out of Malaga 10 days ago at around midday. Security was busy (20 mins) but not a dicky bird at either of the passport controls.   Martin

I took my wife, Tuesday morning and a friend, Wednesday morning and there was no problem with excessive delays through security and passport control.

I collected my son and family yesterday on a fairly busy airport day at 12.30 and from the Easy jet Landing to them coming through arrivals it was a shade over 30 minutes and this included a breakdown on the allocated luggage carousel in baggage claim.
Parking in the express was €4.25 and apart from people just stopping anywhere to drop off and collect was fine.

I travelled to Manchester last Monday morning from Malaga, the queue for security was larger then normal but they seem to have a new queuing system and I was through in around 20 mins (not bad really) coming back from Manchester seemed to be quieter then normal again around 20 mins which for August is good. Services –  More Convenient Food  in Competa- Sugar & Spice 

We are pleased to announce that from 4th September 2017 the food section of our shop will be managed by and based at

Todo Papel at Avenida de la Constitución, 31, Cómpeta.

Todo Papel will continue provide other items, such as greeting cards, second hand books and their package receiving and mailbox services.
When we opened  in 2005 we knew that to create a successful  business in a mountain village we were going to have to be what my Grandad would call “canny”.

Having the shop in the basement of our house made sense.  However being tucked away without vehicular access was not ideal and over the years the reoccurring message we have heard is “why can’t you move your shop to the bottom of the hill?” The answer has always been because groceries are a low margin product and it is not financially viable. Until now!

So what’s happening to the rest of Sugar and Spice?

Our shop at Calle Cazadores 12, on both sides of the road will remain with seasonal clothes and increased focus on our growing furniture, home decor and gifts business. The freed-up space will allow us to have more ranges of furniture on display and will be filled with lovely, interesting things. We have many new and exciting plans for the shop which we will be rolling out over the next few months, watch this space. So the shop will still be tucked away but we offer free local delivery on furniture so no need to drag your new TV cabinet back down the hill!

Hours 6pm start, to prepare a simple evening meal, sleeping on-site, and 7-9am in the mornings.

Daily free time from 9am-6pm.

Large double room with own en-suite bathroom and private roof terrace.

200 euros a week and all meals included.

What’s On- Summer exhibition in Gallery Luz de la Vida in Competa

This month you can see beautiful art by Spanish artist Alberto Tarsicio. He draws on wood and works with a wood-cut technique to give the image extra expression. Furthermore you can enjoy the art by Paz Sanz Fle, Christa Hillekamp, Lieuwke Loth and Anne-Barbara Lenzin.

The gallery space feels authentic and cosy but in the same time presents a modern look showing the contemporary art. In August the gallery will be open more days, also in evenings, varied opening times.
