This decision has been made due to the recent passing of Dirk Itterbeek, the husband of Fabienne Paques, the President & Founder of the shelter. How right you are! It is quite annoying that the “noticias” in the local papers are usually only illustrated using a photo of the 2-3 “usual suspects” with their hands folded over their bellies. And not only during election times!
No, we want useful info: why don´t they give us a drawing or map of what it is they are planning/have done?

Bank of England economist says people need to accept they are poorer:
– The Bank of England’s top economist has said people in the UK need to accept that they are poorer otherwise prices will continue to rise. Huw Pill told a podcast in the US that there was a “reluctance to accept that, yes, we’re all worse off”. He said in response to higher bills and other costs rising, workers had responded by asking for wage increases and businesses were charging more.

The Torrox Spanish History Group (TSHG) meets on the first Monday of each month at the Bio Beach Restaurant in El Morche. And thanks to Naythan and DigameXtra there were 28 people who turned up for our gathering on Monday April 3rd. The next meeting will be held on Monday May 1st, starting at 11:00 am.
The subject for the upcoming May meeting is the ‘Background to the Spanish Civil War’. The talk will be presented by member Keith Rockall. Please come along and support him.

Accident victims call for compulsory insurance for electric scooter riders in Spain:

– In view of this situation, Spain’s national association of lawyers for accident and civil liability (ANAVA-RC ) has called for compulsory insurance for electric scooters.
– Private individuals are not obliged to insure PMVs and it is up to the users to have liability and third party damage insurance. – Ribera insisted that there is no discussion or interpretation, the irrigation plan increases the risk in order to comply with the ruling of the European Court of Justice and, therefore, it is only possible for Andalusia to withdraw the bill, he stressed.

– The entry of a mass of very warm and dry African air over the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands over the next few days will leave “exceptionally high temperatures” for the time of year, which could reach values of up to 35 degrees in large parts of the country and even 40 degrees in the Guadalquivir valley.
– The Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has warned in a statement that this sharp rise in temperatures will be due to stable atmospheric conditions and strong sunshine throughout the country, which will cause a “progressive and marked rise” in maximum temperatures, with values typical of summer.
– On Tuesday and, especially on Wednesday, it is expected that the maximum temperatures will be above 30 degrees in much of the southern half of the peninsula, and locally also in the Ebro valley, inland Murcia and Valencia and in the Guadalquivir valley and inland Huelva and Cadiz, where they can reach 35 degrees.
(The Guadalquivir valley is the most fertile area in Andalucia, broadening out from east to west. From its lower end, a broad plain stretches west across Huelva province and southeast into Cádiz province. Near its mouth, the Guadalquivir splits into a marshy delta known as Las Marismas del Guadalquivir which includes the Parque Nacional de Doñana.)
– Aemet has highlighted the likelihood that on Thursday and Friday will reach “the culminating phase of this episode” with 30 degrees in much of the northern half of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, with the exception of the extreme north of the peninsula.
– In the Cantabrian Sea and Galicia, although temperatures will be “abnormally high, exceeding 25 degrees”, they are not expected to reach 30 degrees, the Agency explained, stressing that in the southern half of the peninsula and in the Ebro valley, temperatures will generally reach 35 degrees, with greater intensity in the Guadalquivir valley, where they could reach up to 40 degrees.
– With regard to minimum temperatures, they will also be “abnormally high throughout the country”, especially in Andalusia, where locally there may be tropical nights without dropping below 20 degrees.
– Aemet has predicted that late on Saturday and more likely on Sunday there will be a notable drop in temperatures due to the entry of a mass of cooler, wetter air from the west of the peninsula, which could leave isolated storms in the northern half of the peninsula.

Alcaucín wildfire declared controlled and the one in Mijas is stabilised:
– Two forest fires were declared Saturday evening, 22 April, in Malaga province, one in Mijas and another in Alcaucín.

Pipeo Day in Casarabonela (Malaga): Saturday 22 April Casarabonela is celebrating the fourth edition of its special Pipeo Day, a gastronomic festival based on this particular dish which is based on the richness and variety of the crops of the Sierra de las Nieves. A dish that stands out for its curro ear lettuce, broad bean seeds and those little balls made with breadcrumbs, egg, garlic and parsley.

Turkey Fair in Cañete la Real (Malaga): The 7th Feria del Pavo (Turkey Fair) is on Sunday 23 April. The Plaza de la Paz, from 11am, will be the centre of all the activity in Cañete la Real and where visitors who drop into the village will be able to sample various types of turkey meat for free, such as turkey brochette, turkey stew and turkey rice. Turkey will not be the only product to be promoted, but other products such as cheese, honey and cured meats will also be on sale at 25 stands set up in Calle Grande.
There will also be guided group visits to the Hins Canit Castle and, in the Plaza de la Verbena, there will be attractions and activities for children.

– Next week, the Andalusian regional government will (most likely) approve a new drought decree, the third it since the current emergency situation began, with an investment of 163 million euros. Twenty-five per cent of this amount will go to direct aid to the primary production sectors most affected by the lack of water. The sum of the amounts invested so far with the two previous decrees was 140 million euros.

Lyrid meteor shower- How to watch ‘fireballs’ drop to Earth during the annual shower’s peak this week:
– The annual Lyrid meteor shower will peak this weekend, and the mostly moonless skies will make it a great time to spot fireballs, bright meteors visible for a few seconds. The second meteor shower of 2023 after January’s Quadrantids, the Lyrids are expected to peak at 9:04 p.m. EDT on Saturday (April 22) (01:06 GMT on Sunday, April 23), according to EarthSky. – From 20:00 there will be a performance by Amigos por el Baile and at 21:30 there will be a concert by Mavel Jiménez. The night will be closed by DJ Mustang at 00:00.

– Interviews with US researchers for a piece in the Washington Post earlier today contain revelations that walrus and polar bear populations in the Russian Far East continue to thrive, despite insisting that polar bears face a dire future without human interference.
– Field studies found Chukchi Sea bears have been in excellent condition and reproducing well, and are not spending more time on land during the summer than they did during the 1980s. Reports in early 2022 that polar bears have been moving from Alaska to Russia in a ‘mass exodus’ may describe a real phenomenon that reflects the excellent feeding conditions for bears in the Chukchi Sea compared to Alaska, fuelled by continued increases in primary productivity made possible by less summer sea ice.
– The conundrum of polar bears and seals thriving in the Chukchi Sea despite there appearing to be less summer sea ice is explained by the fact that primary productivity has increased since sea ice declined after 2002. Studies have shown that more sunlight reaching open water for longer periods in recent years has meant more food for the entire Arctic food chain and that these effects have been strongest in the Chukchi and Barents Seas (Crockford 2023; Frey et al. 2022). More food for fish and seals has meant more food for polar bears in the spring and fatter bears mean more healthy cubs.

High Speed Internet Comes To The Campo! – Hispasat to connect homes in rural Spain to satellite internet for €35/month, by end of 2023: There are currently more than 1.36 million homes in Spain with no, or poor quality, internet connections – the vast majority of them in rural areas. In a bid to improve that statistic Brussels has awarded Hispasat, the Spanish satellite operator, almost 75 million euros following an agreement with the government to offer internet at a speed of 100 megabits (Mbps) for 35 euros per month in the least populated areas of the country. The goal of the initiative is to have 100 per cent of Spain’s villages with quality internet coverage before the end of the year.

Humans were already sewing their clothes nearly 40,000 years ago:

Survey: About a month ago I received a letter from the Junta about a survey to be conducted by somebody who would come to the house and ask me questions about my health and welfare. Covid was mentioned and in such a way that I thought it was a bit late to be talking about certain aspects of social distancing etc. then I saw the date on the letter which was 29 July 2022. I assumed that this letter had been lost in the black hole of Correos, and forgot all about it.
Yesterday somebody turned up to conduct the survey! If you have received one of these letters (8,500 will be participating) the survey is still going on. She was with me for an hour asking hundreds of questions about everything from how far do I walk, what I eat, what I do, how I feel, do I have any help etc. etc. It was an exhausting process, in the letter it says that the interview will be conducted outside the house because of Covid restrictions. Thank God it was inside as I at least had a seat. So, if you have had one of these letters, be warned.

– What are the limits to rent updates? A little over a year ago, faced with the relentless advance of inflation, the Government approved a royal decree-law to prevent current rental contracts from being updated with the CPI during 2022. To achieve this, they established a 2% cap on these increases, which the Council of Ministers extended to 2023. Now, according to the information shared by ERC and Bildu, this limit will be set at 3% in 2024 and, from 2025 onwards, a newly created index will be used, the calculation of which is not yet clear, explain sources at the Rent Negotiating Agency. It should be remembered that rental contracts are usually signed for one year and can be extended up to five if the owner is a natural person and seven if it is a legal entity. During this period of validity, there is the possibility of making updates every twelve months, and the tenant cannot be evicted unless the landlord proves that he needs the house for himself or a relative
– Are these increases automatic? No. In the case of contracts signed after 2019, these increases can only be applied if the text includes a clause that provides for the update for each year, explains Víctor Palomo, a lawyer at the Centre for Advice and Social Studies (CAES) and the Tenants’ Union. – Does the cap also apply to new leases? No. This 2% cap on leases in 2023 and 3% in 2024 applies only to upgrades, and landlords will be able to continue to set the price they consider appropriate when signing a new contract.
– However, the long-term objective of the law is to establish a cap in stressed areas, for which it has already started to take steps, according to sources at the Rent Negotiating Agency. In this sense, the autonomous communities will be able to define in their territories the stressed market areas in order to establish price limitations there.
– To achieve this, the law no longer differentiates whether the owner is a company or an individual, as was the case before. The only existing distinction from now on between landlords is the number of homes they own: the definition of large holder is reduced from ten to five properties.
– How do these stressed areas work? To declare an area as stressed, one of two conditions must be met: the average mortgage or rent charge (plus expenses) must exceed 30% of the average rent of tenants in the area, or the price must have risen three points above the CPI in five years. There, landlords with five or more dwellings will be obliged to charge rent at a price within a “range” set by the Ministry of Transport using an index, yet to be calculated, according to the same sources.
– Small landlords, the first time they put a property on the market, will have to set the rent according to the same index. When the property has already been rented previously, the previous contract will have to be taken as a reference, “although it is not clear if it is the same or modified in any way”. The agency criticises the fact that the law makes “all the effort in controlling prices”, as they consider it fundamental to “increase the housing stock”.
– BONUS INCENTIVES FOR LANDLORDS TO LOWER RENTS. To favour this scenario, there will be “bonuses for homeowners in stressed areas if they lower their prices”. They will be able to get tax relief of up to 90% if they reduce the cost by at least 5% compared to the previous contract and up to 70% if they put a home on the market and rent it to a young person aged between 18 and 35 or to the public administration so that the latter, in turn, rents it out as a social rental.
– WHAT ABOUT ESTATE AGENTS’ FEES? Another major novelty of the law concerns real estate agencies: it will always be the landlords and not the tenants who pay their expenses and fees when signing a rental contract. The usual “plus one month’s agency fee” in many Internet rental advertisements will disappear. Furthermore, it will be forbidden to increase the fees beyond what is stipulated by forcing tenants to pay community fees or municipal taxes.

Spanish PM apologises over sexual consent law reform loophole:
– Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez apologised in an interview published on Sunday to victims of sexual abuse over a sexual violence law that included a loophole enabling at least 978 imprisoned offenders to get their sentences reduced or ended early.

But in any case, there has been an undesired effect that we have to resolve,” Sanchez said in an interview with El Correo newspaper.

Rastro / Second hand market in Sayalonga:
On Sunday the 23rd of April, Sayalonga will have its first Rastro / Second hand market. It will be held on the main square, Plaza Don Rafael Alcoba, from 09:15am – 13:15pm. Half of the stalls are now reserved. To reserve a stall, please contact Marielle on (+34) 624 469 615 or Yolanda (+34) 600 794 325 (both also on WhatsApp). Price for a stall is 5 Euros.
If successful, this will become a recurring market. So we need you for that! Help us make this a success, book a stall (better be quick!) or come and visit our market and beautiful village. It is the only second hand market in this area (Sayalonga, Archez, Cómpeta, Canillas de Albaida, Algarrobo etcetera) so we expect a lot of visitors, but the more the better of course. And a new car park will most likely be ready, opposite the communal swimming pool.
If you wish to have lunch in Sayalonga it is probably better to book a table at one of the restaurants of the village. Yolanda, Sayalonga.
