SPAIN

The Government confirms personal income tax discounts of up to 90% for landlords who rent at affordable prices: The First Vice President of the Government and Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviño, confirmed today in Congress that the Housing Law includes tax credits in the IRPF declaration of between 50% and 90% for owners who rent homes at affordable prices. This was said in response to the challenge raised by the PP to explain the measures he intends to adopt to “reverse the loss of disposable income and the impoverishment of families, aggravated by a confiscatory fiscal policy.” Full article: https://spainsnews.com/the-government-confirms-personal-income-tax-discounts-of-up-to-90-for-those-who-rent-at-affordable-prices/

DOÑANA WATER WARS

President Sánchez goes to Doñana to accuse the Junta de Andalucia of “arrogance” and demand that it stop the irrigation plan: {Translation, summary}
– For President Sánchez, a “four-year” government, in reference to the Andalusian government, “cannot take the Doñana Park, with centuries of history, to a point of no return” because of its agricultural policies. (EU stooge Sanchez arrogantly ignores the fact his administration is very likely to also be a “four-year” government, as he attempts to bully the Andalucian community and ignore local democratic processes. -Ed.)
– The President of the Government has also insisted that the Andalusian government is “arrogant” and should abandon the plan to reorganise crops in Huelva. “The PP and Vox – promoters of the proposed law on Doñana – should listen to the ecologists, scientists and the European Union”. The president also called on the Junta to “return to European legality”. Source, Spanish: https://sevilla.abc.es/andalucia/pedro-sanchez-acusa-junta-soberbia-exige-pare-20230420142429-nts.html

PP leader Feijóo to Sánchez: “Doñana defends itself by executing infrastructures and not by coming in a Falcon”: {Translation}
{“Falcon” is Old Spanish for a type of cannon used in ancient artillery, ref: https://dle.rae.es/falc%C3%B3n}
– The president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo {pic}, has affirmed this Thursday that “Doñana is defended by executing infrastructures and not by coming to visit in Falcon” and has asked the president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, “not to tamper” with a national park “pride of Andalusia and Spain”.
– Feijóo made these statements coinciding with the visit that the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, is making to the Doñana National Park in the midst of the controversy over the irrigation expansion plan approved by the Andalusian Parliament.
– During his speech at a PP event in Huelva, in which he was accompanied by the Popular candidate for mayor of the capital, Pilar Miranda, the leader of the Popular Party criticised the central government’s water management. “Five years in government have been five lost years in water policy; without talking about the State Water Pact, pitting the autonomous communities against each other over water; pitting farmers, livestock breeders and the rest of the population against each other over water, and it is not reasonable to live on tension, confrontation and to have lost five years,” he said.
– He highlighted the inability of Pedro Sánchez’s government to comply with the Law on the transfer of 15 hm3 from the Tinto-Odiel-Piedras basin to the Guadalquivir basin, approved in 2018, which “committed water for human supply to the populations of Condado de Huelva and for irrigation for strawberries and fruit located 30 kilometres from the Doñana reserve”. “This law and the investments committed by the government have not been executed and the government has failed to comply with Doñana, with the farmers and with Huelva, and we say this because it is true”, he remarked.
– He agreed with the statement that “Doñana is not to be touched”, which is why he asked the President of the Government “not to come here and paw Doñana to blame the Andalusians for Spain’s water problem; it makes no sense, don’t paw a national park that is the pride of all Andalusia and all of Spain”, he said.
– “If he had cared anything about Doñana since the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, has asked to talk about his problems, he would have sat down to talk and carried out the committed works, it is not coherent to come in Falcon to defend Doñana when it is defended by executing infrastructures”, he insisted.
– At the same time, he has made a “clear and specific” commitment when he becomes Prime Minister to “comply with the 2018 Law, to carry out all the works committed to Huelva by declaration of emergency and to preserve Doñana from any attack of neglect by the PSOE Government over the last five years”. In addition, he promised to promote a State Water Pact so that in the next legislature the problems of a large part of Spain will have solutions agreed with specific budgets and executed infrastructures.

New Warning from Our EU Overlords Regarding the Irrigation Law in Doñana: {Translation}
– The European Commission has reiterated in writing this Thursday that the draft law in Andalusia on irrigation in Doñana “could contravene EU environmental legislation” and has warned that Brussels has an obligation to ensure with “all available means” (read: “financial blackmail”) that it is respected in Spain. The European Commissioner for the Environment, Virginius Sinkevicius, said in a written answer to a parliamentary question put by Socialist MEPs César Luena and Javi López, “If approved in the terms announced, this legislative proposal could contravene applicable EU environmental legislation”.
– The Commissioner recalls that he has already “requested clarifications from the Spanish authorities”, referring to a letter sent to the Spanish diplomatic delegation at the end of March.
– Sources from the Ministry for Ecological Transition indicated that this Thursday Madrid will send to Brussels the documentation relating to Doñana requested by the European Commission in that March letter signed by the Director General for the Environment, Florika Fink-Hooijer, coinciding with the last day of the deadline.
“The Spanish government has not been able to respond in advance and is hurrying until the last moment because it was obliged to wait for the explanations from the Andalusian government required by the European Commission”, added the sources, who specified that “these explanations were not communicated in writing to Miteco until a few hours ago”.
– Sinkevicius adds in his written reply that, in the event of a breach of European law, the Commission may act with “all means available under the Treaties to ensure that the Kingdom of Spain effectively complies with the judgment of the Court of Justice of the EU” of June 2021 condemning Spain for failing to adequately safeguard the protected area. However, Sinkevicius said that “the national provisions to ensure that Spain takes the necessary measures to comply with the Court’s judgment are a matter for the national authorities”.
– The European Commissioner met this Tuesday in Stockholm with the Third Vice-President of the Spanish Government and Minister for Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, who said that Sinkevicius had expressed his concern about the “potential additional risk” that the law that the PP has brought forward with VOX would entail.
– This proposal foresees formally extending the irrigation area in Doñana, an extreme that the government rejects and worries the European Commission, despite the fact that the conservatives maintain that it will not affect the aquifers. The discussion, which is taking place in the context of an election campaign with municipal elections scheduled for the end of May, has reached Brussels.
– Faced with the Commission’s repeated warnings against the legal change in Doñana, the PP has enlisted the support of the president of the European People’s Party (EPP), the German Manfred Weber, who has requested a meeting with the European Commission by letter to explain an initiative that he assures will not affect underground aquifers.
– At the same time, officials from the Andalusian regional government have scheduled a meeting in Brussels on 3 May with members of the Commissioner’s team to address the issue of Doñana, the Andalusian government announced today.
– Declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO (1980) and a World Heritage Site (1994), Doñana is one of the best-known protected areas in Europe and is spread over a dozen municipalities in Huelva, Seville and Cadiz through two formal forms: the National Park (1969) and the Natural Park, created in 1989 and extended in 1997. AXARQUIA

The Board urges the Axarquía to reduce water consumption below 200 liters per inhabitant: {Translation}
– The Junta de Andalucía is urging the municipalities of La Axarquía to reduce their water consumption, even below the 200 litres per inhabitant per day, which was set at the beginning of the hydrological year. In the Management Committee of the Hydrographic Demarcation of the Andalusian Mediterranean Basins, which met this Thursday in Malaga, a forecast of the evolution of water resources in the eastern part of the province of Malaga until the end of the hydrological year, on 30 September, has been presented, which places the situation as extremely serious.
– If there is no change in the weather after the summer, this area could be condemned to a virtual lack of surface water resources and the loss of the possibility of exploiting the La Viñuela reservoir, even for human consumption. According to these figures, reported by Cadena SER Axarquía, there will be a contribution from the Guadalhorce system of 6.8 cubic hectometres and from the wells of the River Chíllar, 1.8 hectometres, to which must be added almost 10 hectometres from the La Viñuela reservoir, which would leave the dam at an all-time low of 7.29% of its capacity at the end of September.
– In addition, they warn that if there are no contributions of a certain magnitude to the reservoir, which are increasingly unlikely, there will be a deterioration in the quality of the water in the dam due to temperature, lack of oxygen and the phenomenon of stratification of the volume of water in the reservoir. In the simulation carried out by those responsible for the management of the Viñuela System, they underline the near impossibility of supplying water for agricultural use in the irrigation area of the Guaro Plan, even with unitary relief supplies.

Health detects a case of scarlet fever in a school in Malaga capital and notifies parents: {Translation, summary}
– Health has detected a case of scarlet fever in a school in Malaga and has increased vigilance to prevent its spread. In addition, it has put parents on alert so that, given the symptoms of the disease, they go to a pediatrician. These specialists clarify that there is no cause for alarm because fortunately it is an infectious disease that can be cured with antibiotics , but they strongly emphasize that a doctor should be consulted for treatment if the child has a fever, irritation in the throat, and a rash. TRAVEL NEWS

Spain’s Air Europa pilots call strike in early May: {20 Apr 2023}
– Spanish pilots union SEPLA called the strike on Thursday due to what they referred to as the airline’s “zero interest” in resolving the labour dispute.
– The planned strike dates are May 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th, involving between 620 and 640 pilots at all airports in Spain where Air Europa has bases. This will coincide with the May Day bank holiday, a public holiday in Madrid on May 2nd and Mother’s Day, a time when plenty of air travel is expected.
– Hundreds of Air Europa flights are likely to be cancelled and delayed, but the airline will have to offer minimum services by law, which usually means that passengers whose flights are cancelled are put on an alternative flight on the same day. Tennis News- Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the Mutua Madrid Open: The five-time champion revealed that he is not ready to return to competitive action following the leg injury he suffered at the Australian Open in January. “The last few weeks and months have been difficult,” Nadal said in a video published on social media on Thursday. “As you know, I picked up a significant injury in Australia, to my psoas. First it was going to be a six to eight-week recovery period, we’re in the 14th week and the reality is that the situation is not what we expected.
– “In any case, I have followed the medical advice but the progress has not been as they told us at the beginning. We find ourselves in a difficult situation, the weeks are passing by. I was excited to play in the most important tournaments in my career such as Monte-Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, Roland Garros. So far, I’ve missed Monte-Carlo and Barcelona and I also wanted to tell you that I won’t be able to be in Madrid.” Full article: https://www.atptour.com/en/news/nadal-madrid-2023-withdrawal

Basketball News- Malaga will host the BCL Final Four: {Translation, summary}
– FIBA decided this Thursday to award Malaga the organisation of the Final Four of the Basketball Champions League, which will be played from 12 to 14 May in the Martín Carpena. Unicaja, Bonn, Tenerife and Hapoel will be the four contending teams. The board assessed the integrity of the bids. In the end, the advantages of Malaga has out-weighed that of Jerusalem, a place of basketball and tradition as well, but with the halo of insecurity in the area plus the incidents that occurred in the elimination against AEK, started by Greek fans but with some recent replicas in Israel. Is the business of Chinese bazaars in danger?: {Translation, summary}
– The closure of two large Chinese bazaars in Malaga could mean a turning point in the future of this type of business. After the consequences of the pandemic and later those of the conflict in Ukraine, the price of imports has become more expensive. These stores are known for offering very cheap products, but now the profit margin is much smaller.
– Yet these two bazaars have not closed solely for profitability, it may mean a turning point for the future of Chinese bazaar businesses, which have seen two leading stores in Malaga stop working.
– According to the Association of Chinese Entrepreneurs of Malaga , the main enemy in the fall in sales has been the Internet . During the pandemic, online purchases increased dramatically and the young public has become familiar with pages like Aliexpress that offer products at a very cheap price.
– Another problem that is beginning to occur is that many businesses are now run by the new Chinese generations who have grown up in Spain, something that has made them more familiar with the Spanish lifestyle and not so much with the one their parents inherited. Chinese bazaars have always distinguished themselves by being open almost every day and for many hours, being a business to turn to when something urgent is needed, since it also sells all kinds of products. But according to the association, the new generations do not have the same work mentality, and would seek to get closer to the Spanish rhythm of life than what their families have become accustomed to. This in turn could make them less competitive. Source, Spanish: https://andaluciainformacion.es/andalucia/1247008/corre-peligro-el-negocio-de-los-bazares-chinos/

New Life Church: Whether you live in Nerja or are visiting our area, you are very welcome to come and join us at our Sunday gathering. Join us for a time of Holy Spirit led worship and experience the presence of our God. Our teaching is Bible based as we honour God and obey His Word. During this time of uncertainty, God’s Word reminds us that the Gospel shines brightest in times of darkness. Our service lasts for about 1 hour and 30 mins. With Tea and Coffee afterwards.
Jesus said, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. John 14:6
