Check Point experts today revealed a new high-severity vulnerability affecting Philips Hue Smart Light Bulbs that can be exploited over-the-air from over 100 meters away to gain entry into a targeted WiFi network, using just a laptop and an external wifi adapter.
The source is in geekspeak but I’ll summarize. If you have smart-devices, that are connected to your home wifi (known as the Internet of Things or IoT), those may contain weaknesses allowing hackers into your wifi connection and connected computers. Security cameras, digital assistants like Alexa, smart TVs, wireless printers, there are even smart fridges and faucets! Every week security patches are released as exploits are discovered. Smart devices must be kept updated, look in the manual for instructions.

Here is some info on the festival which promises to be a good day out feasting on 1000kg delicacies made from pork and all free. The local cuisine of the interior makes the province of Málaga stand out for preserving its identity. Olive oil and wine are some of the most widely claimed products in the last few years. But products from pork are now becoming more and more popular. For more than a decade, Ardales—located in the Guadalteba Valley—has been paying homage to the traditional elaboration of sausages and pork meats by celebrating the Fiesta de la Matanza day. This day allows visitors to learn how sausages and other meat products used to be made, for which local women recreate the traditional methods with ancient tools. There is a local saying that goes, “Del cerdo, hasta los andares”, and the reality is that absolutely every part of the pig is used as it is all so good, especially if it has been reared in and around the village.

Twitter Hack Reveals Phone Numbers of Millions of Users: Twitter today issued a warning revealing that attackers abused a legitimate functionality on its platform to determine phone numbers associated with millions of its users’ accounts.
The company became aware of the issue on December 24 last year after a security researcher ‘unethically’ exploited a similar, or the same, loophole in Twitter to successfully match nearly 17 million phone numbers to their profiles.
Twitter says the social networking site has since then addressed the issue and there is no action required from the users’ side.
You can stop anyone from finding your profile based on your email address or phone number by navigating to the ‘Discoverability’ setting in your Twitter account and disable it.

Torrox Spanish History Group: We will be meeting on Tuesday the 4th February at 11am in El Parquesol. Our next Speaker will be Nigel Partridge who will continue with the theme of the Arabs. Nigel’s talk is called “Islamic Spain 711 – 1492”.
At our meeting on Tuesday the 7th January we had a short AGM and discussed future meetings. It was suggested that we could have a quiz just before Christmas at the end of the year and also a discussion or debating group for one of the meetings where members could send in their particular area for debate
We also discussed future coach trips and some members would like to visit Santa Fe which we could incorporate in going to the Lorca Museum in Fuente Vaqueros as well as the farm where he spent his later years.
I presented a talk on the “Rise of Islam” explaining life before Islam and the life of Muhammad and I then described the chaos that arose with Muhammad’s untimely death as to who would take over as the new Leader of Islam and gave a brief overview of all the Caliphs who followed up until the 715AD when the Ummayds were in control and when in 711 the Arabs crossed the Straits of Gibraltar, making their way to Iberia.
The next part is being taken up by Nigel Partridge!

New Cafes, BLQ 79 (East side), Torrox Costa: Two adjacent cafes with outdoor covered terraces have opened. One is called the Portabello Cafe, who’s propritor and chef, I am told, was previously cooking at Richi’s Pollo Asador at BLQ 77. Hours are 8:30am-9pm. Offering typical Spanish breakfast items in morning, then later tapas and plates, with full bar. The other cafe, with no sign with a name outside, just a menu board, opens later and closes depending on customers, offering drinks, cocktails, tapas and snacks. I have seen them doing a large Pallea on the weekend. They have pop music playing and 60’s posters on the walls. Both are far off the streets, with their terraces placed in the large lawns between BLQs. If you want a place to chill out away from the traffic and crowds, these two fit the bill!

Recommendation for Scott Wilson from SPW: We bought our dream house in Spain five years ago, thinking that we’d spend our well-earned retirement in perfect tranquility. After all, this is the sixth home we’ve owned in four countries and on three different continents, with never any major problems other than normal maintenance.
At the very outset, we were faced with rising damp that of course had been masked over for the sale. There was also a lovely swimming pool that had serious structural problems that had been covered up as well. The first major rain uncovered a leaky roof, and at the back of the house, there was flooding.
For the first four years, we had no less than five different so-called builders (Spanish and English), tackling the problems. Despite all the “work” done, not to mention the money spent, things just got worse; to the point where we had black mold on the living room wall and part of the ceiling, facing the pool side.
We nearly worked with yet another person, but one the solutions he proposed was so preposterous, that we let him go.
Luckily, we came across a Digamextra ad for SPW, Scott Wilson.
To make a long story short, Scott and his team got busy in June of 2019, locating the different sources of leakage. The first was the swimming pool, the second was a leaking underground gully, between the pool and the house that nobody had ever discovered. They both contributed to water seeping under the front side of the house and up the walls. SPW took it in two stages, first the gully and then the pool, which included landscaping and tiling of the pool terrace, and complete treatment of the walls and ceilings inside the house. Scott took photographs of all the pictures we had on the walls, treated the areas, painted them and put all the pictures back in their correct position. Wow, never saw that before!
The third phase has just been completed. That was a major project in the back of the house, which, again, had been treated several times with no results. We regularly experienced severe flooding in this area, especially with intense rain, such as we’ve had of late.
We think that he’s now brought our home up to the standard we expected when we purchased it. Please contact us if you would like further explanation as to why we are so pleased with Scott and his guys.
Oh, BTW, the roof doesn’t leak any more either.

BREAKING NEWS: Coronavirus has officially been declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization as the outbreak spreads rapidly outside China. The decision by the World Health Organization (WHO) to say it is a public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) comes as the number of people who have died from the virus has reached 170. This implies a situation that is “serious, sudden, unusual or unexpected”, which may call for immediate international action.
Chinese health authorities have said there were 7,711 confirmed cases in the country as of 29 January. What Ever Happened To Erring On The Side of Safety?
Wuhan football team land in Malaga despite coronavirus fears.
An article from the Jan 30, 2020 issue of www.thelocal.es states, “Regional health authorities have said none of the group are sick and given they have not been in Wuhan since January 2nd, the maximum period for monitoring has passed.” So I would take that to be about 2 to 4 weeks of observation before they are cleared to return to the public.
But then the article goes on to say, “The Wuhan Zall Chinese first division team arrived this morning at Malaga airport from Istanbul and Shanghai…”
Excuse me, there have been 96 coronavirus cases confirmed in Shanghai (https://www.shine.cn/news/metro/2001290822/). In fact, Shanghai is one of the most infected places on Earth (https://edition.cnn.com/asia/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-01-30-20-intl-hnk/h_e89dabe8ed1d4b2e3f03048a18d98ec3)
By my logic, as the team passed thru Shanghai, a heavy infection area, in the past few days, their “observation period” should be restarted from day 2.
This seems an unreasonable risk to take just so a football team from half way around the world can practice in warm weather for a few weeks.

Brexit: What happens at midnight on Friday January 31? Not a lot.

From January 31 a UK passport no longer makes you an EU citizen — even though EU travel benefits continue to apply during the transition period.
HM Passport Office has already started issuing new documents without the “European Union” wording. From early this year, it will also begin changing the colour of new passports from burgundy to blue. None of these cosmetic changes affects the validity of any passport or the ability of holders to travel within the EU during the transition period.
“All British passports issued from mid-2020 will be blue,” the government says.
Some relatively minor but worrying issues have already been partially settled. For example, the 650,000 retired British citizens already living in European countries have been told their pensions will continue to be uprated alongside inflation in line with those issued in the UK. But there is no agreement yet on what will happen to those retiring to another EU country after the end of this year. Choir: The Competa based choir, Coro de Competa, and a new group The Pop and Jazz Singers, are looking for new members. The Pop and Jazz group will be meeting for rehearsals starting on Monday 3rd February at the Ayuntamiento in Competa from 11.00 to 13.00. If you like to sing, do not read music, and wish to learn new songs of the pop/jazz variety, and have a good sing please come along to this session. This is led by our brilliant MD Anne, who will teach you new and old songs.
If you like to sing in a more traditional way in four part harmony, then come and sing with Coro de Competa. We are meeting at the Ayuntamiento, Competa, also, on Monday 3rd February from 14.30 to 16.30. This group is led by our fantastic MD Rick, who will help you to read music, and sing in four part harmony, with more traditional and classical songs.
This is not a “this or that” choir as some may like to do both. If you love to sing and want to join our forward looking choirs, why not do both?
You choose which or both, come along and meet us and enjoy the pleasures of singing.

Rugby Six Nations at The Coach and Horses Nerja:

26th Rockin’Race Jamboree: This Rockabilly event will be held at the Prince of Asturias Auditorium in Torremolinos from February 6 to 9 and promises to be a major musical event with more than 30 bands DJs and classic cars. Headlining acts are Robert Gordon (Rockabilly legend) & Darrel Higham (from UK band Kat Men) and The Doug Kershaw Band.
It’s a real rockabilly event that attracts audiences from all over Europe and the town of Torremolinos is the place to be seen if you like Beehive hairstyles, drapes, 50s fashion and American music.
There is a great five day offer at €80 per person to include a free cd although you can buy entry for single days but at €40 per person and be warned, Sunday tickets are already exhausted.
A number of the events take place in different parts of the town and there will be a limited number of market stalls offering a selection of goods in keeping with the event.
