Halting Erosion using Vetiver
From Vetiver Spain in Sayalonga
Our Nursery is open by appointment depending on the current travel restrictions. Please email or call first. We have Moringa seedlings, Organic Moringa powder and Comfrey plants. We also have some local trees and some exotic trees from Africa.
Vetiver is a rapid growing and non-invasive sterile clump grass with a height of 1-2 metres and a root system of 3-4 metres in depth. We have been providing Vetiver throughout the EU for almost 10 years now. We are located in Sayalonga where we can plant year round but our best results by far start in February. The reason is that Vetiver is indigenous to India and Vetiver loves the heat of the summer. Use Vetiver cuttings as mulch around all of your fruit trees. Decomposing Vetiver improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away all while helping to maintain soil moisture.
Vetiver is a nutritious and replenishable animal fodder. Horses and pigs love it. We use it in our chicken pens replacing hay because it stops mites.
In the 2 photos below you will see land prepared for Vetiver and the results 2 years later.
We also use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive ornamental hedge.
Here is a link to a short video showing the results.
https://youtu.be/rjTmb_LL2uo
We suggest planting now, as this is the BEST time of the year to plant.

Recommendations & Requests

Vaccine Certificates: Thanks to everyone for replying to my previous post about vaccine certificates.
The solution:
Download the Salud Andalusia app
Select: Certificados COVID-19
Select: Vacunation
Select: Datos personales y verificación móvil
Then enter the information:
AN number (you can get this from the appointment card)
Document type and number* (NIE or Passport / others)
Date of birth
Telephone number
The information must match exactly the information on the system!
*Here’s where we had a problem. My document was a UK passport and it kept saying the information was incorrect without specifically identifying what was wrong. We checked with the local health centre and they informed us you need to add a 0 (zero) to the front of the 9 digit UK passport number! (how silly of us not to realise, haha). I understand there is not a problem when using your NIE as the identifying document – but you have to use whichever document they have on the system for you … in our case a UK passport.
Once the info is accepted as correct you’ll receive a text message with a code – enter code and hey presto you are in and you can download the certificate (although in my case it took a number of attempts).
Hope this helps others having difficulty.
Feel free to email me should anyone need further help.

COVID-19

Covid Malaga- The rate continues to rise in Malaga, with almost 300 infections and one death for the second day running: {Translation} Updated: 29 June, 2021, 13:44.
-Contrary to the evolution in Andalusia, the cumulative incidence of the coronavirus continues to grow in Malaga and has now increased for more than three weeks. Although with occasional decreases, the upward trend is clear since the beginning of June when the province entered in high risk of spread of Covid to exceed the limit of 150 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. As of this Tuesday, according to updated data from the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalusia (IECA), the rate is 171.8. It has risen 1.7 points in the last day, after the 12 points climbed after the weekend.
-Also in the capital of Malaga, the rate has risen one more day, to 175.5 cases in the last 14 days, nine points more than the previous day. With this, the city is ahead of the provincial average, which in turn exceeds the regional rate by eight points, which stands at 163.8. In the case of Andalusia, this indicator fell by four tenths of a point on Tuesday, the eleventh consecutive day.
-The rate at which the number of infections is increasing is not slowing down either. Although this day the number of new infections is a few less than yesterday (only 24, taking into account that they were accumulated data for the whole weekend), the figure is close to 300 cases for the second consecutive day. Specifically, the province of Malaga has 272 Covid positives, compared to the 296 recorded on Saturday and Sunday. Once again, it is the Andalusian province with the most cases.
-On this Tuesday registered one more death in Malaga due to the virus, which brings to 1,671 the number of deaths in the province of Malaga since the outbreak of the pandemic. In Andalusia, seven deaths have been recorded in the last day (Seville and Jaen have two each, while Cadiz and Cordoba have one each). Andalusia to “slow down” Covid vaccination of 30-year-olds in July as half the number of doses will be given to them: {Translation} Updated: 29/06/2021, 16:46
-In July there will be a “slowdown” in the pace of vaccination against Covid-19 in Andalusia, which until now was going faster than in other autonomous communities, as announced this Tuesday by the Minister of Health and Families, Jesús Aguirre. The reason for this is that 1,575,920 doses will arrive in July from different laboratories. This is less than half the number of vaccines that the autonomous community will receive this June (3,467,100 doses).
-As a result, there will be a “slowdown” in the vaccination of those under 35 years of age. Those in their thirties will be the main group affected by this halt.
-Right now, Andalusians born in 1985 are being vaccinated, i.e. those aged 36. Andalusia has closed the schedule of appointments for groups under this age since last week to administer the second doses.
-Aguirre explained that “there will be a significant drop in the arrival of vaccines in the following weeks”. No doses from AstraZeneca will arrive in July, because by then all the second injections will have been given to the 60-69 age group. Nor will there be any doses from Janssen because there has been “a contamination problem”.
-The minister said that they will start calling Andalusians aged 33 to 35 “throughout this month and next month” because the availability of vaccines will be lower and a second dose will have to be reserved for those who had their first injections beforehand. “If 50% less than the 580,000 doses from Pfizer are going to arrive and the second dose has to be administered 21 days later, I have to slow down a little and keep it on stand-by,” he said.

Coronavirus infections soar in the age group between 15 and 29 years old in Spain: Andalucía plans to bring forward the vaccination of the under-30s due to the risk of outbreaks among young people.
The number of coronavirus infections has skyrocketed in the age group between 15 and 29 years in recent weeks, with the ‘macro outbreak’ originating in Mallorca due to end-of-year trips being the prime example with close to a thousand people infected.
Regional government sources said, “At the moment there is nothing agreed, but the matter is on the table,” who admit that the ‘macro outbreak’ in is worrying the Junta, that wants to avoid at all costs the possibility of something similar happen in Andalucía. SPAIN

New Coronavirus outbreak in Spain- how it started and what is happening now: Over 1,000 people in eight regions have tested positive after traveling to Mallorca on student trips. More than 200 youths have been quarantined on the island, leading to claims of ‘kidnapping’
Parties in hotel rooms, outdoor drinking sessions, cruises and a crowded reggaeton concert in Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands. These are some of the hotspots of the coronavirus outbreak that has led to more than 1,000 cases in eight Spanish regions, and forced more than 2,000 people to quarantine in Madrid alone. There are related cases in Galicia, the Valencia region, the Basque Country, Murcia, Castilla-La Mancha, Aragón and Catalonia.

-Effective immediately, the new measure applies to all US citizens who do not visit any other country before arriving in Spain. Nonetheless, it should be noted that connecting flights without leaving the airport are still allowed.

The government will repopulate sparsely populated villages in Castile-La Mancha with migrants: {Translation, summary}
-The Minister for Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, José Luis Escrivá, has assured that he thinks the idea of repopulating empty Spain with migrants is “very good”, after receiving proposals from the Junta de Castilla y León and some town councils.
-“I think it’s very good, it’s an idea that we have in our heads”, Escrivá stressed on Monday at a breakfast briefing at Nueva Economía Forum, when asked about a letter sent by the vice-president of the Junta de Castilla y León, Francisco Igea, with a proposal to repopulate the towns with migrants.
-“The model we have, which tends to extend, through different channels, sometimes purely administrative burdens, to enormously extend the period of this irregularity, this generates unacceptable pockets of submerged economy that we have to redirect”, said the minister.
-In this regard, he stressed the importance of “adequately training” young migrants arriving in Spain so that in the short or medium term they can join the labour market, especially in the middle of the decade, when “a large workforce will be needed due to the retirement of the baby boomers”. COVID-19

Covid Spain- Spain returns to 100 cumulative incidence cases after reporting 10,179 new positives since Friday: {Translation} Updated: 28 jun 2021, 18:40
-The incidence of covid has risen again this Monday by five points and stands at 100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, according to Health, which has reported 10 more deaths since Friday (the lowest figure since last July) and 10,179 new infections.
-The covid transmission rate began to fall two months ago (27 April) uninterruptedly until last week, when, after three days of stagnation, it began to rise on Thursday.
-The 7-day cumulative incidence – the one that gives an indication of the virus trend by reporting the most recent cases – also continues to rise slightly (51.54). For the time being, the increase in infections is not reflected in the ICUs, where the occupancy rate remains at 6.9%, while the hospital pressure is up slightly to 2.04% (1.9% on Friday).
-The total number of infections since the start of the pandemic now stands at 3,792,642 and the number of deaths at 80,779, of which 32 have been reported in the last seven days.
CUMULATIVE INCIDENCE
-Castilla-La Mancha (48) is the only community in a situation of “new normality”, recording an incidence of less than 50 cases, along with the autonomous city of Ceuta (16.6). At the opposite extreme is Andalusia, which, with 164 cases, is at high risk of transmission (above 150 cases).
-The rest of the territories are at medium risk (between 50 and 150 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 14 days).
DEATHS
-Of the 32 deaths in the last seven days, 14 have been reported in Andalusia, 3 in the Canary Islands and another 3 in Castile and Leon. Asturias remains the region with the highest fatality rate in the pandemic (3.7%), while the national rate is 2.1%.
HOSPITAL ADMISSIONS AND DISCHARGES
-In the last 24 hours there have been 244 admissions for covid in Spanish hospitals and 128 discharges. Only three autonomous regions exceed 10% of covid patients in their intensive care units: Madrid (14.5%), Catalonia (11.1%) and La Rioja (11.3%). At present, 2,495 covid patients are hospitalised on the ward and 644 in the ICUs.
DIAGNOSTIC TESTS
-Spain has carried out 46,257,190 diagnostic tests since the beginning of the pandemic, of which 34,044,503 are PCR and 12,212,687 antigen tests. In the last week, from 18 to 24 June, the autonomous communities have carried out a total of 586,565 diagnostic tests in this period, 83,795 per day. Covid Andalucia- Andalusia’s rate falls for the tenth day in a row to 164.2: {Translation, summary} Updated: 28/06/2021, 16:47
-Andalusia has registered a total of 1,260 cases of coronavirus after the weekend, more than the 1,210 of the same days last week.
-On the other hand, the cumulative incidence rate of the community has fallen for the tenth time in a row and stands at 164.2 per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, one point below the rate of Saturday and 9.5 less in seven days.
-By provinces, Malaga is the one with the most cases with 296, followed by Seville with 259, Granada with 190, Cadiz with 173, Cordoba with 130, Jaen with 85, Huelva with 65 and Almeria with 62.
-The three deaths have been recorded- Cordoba (two) and Granada (one).
HOSPITAL ADMISSIONS RISE
-Andalusia has recorded on Monday an increase in the number of people hospitalised with coronavirus to 537, 24 more in one day, but 58 fewer than seven days ago and the lowest figure since 2 September 2020, when there were 522, while those admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) have also increased to 124, two more in one day and 18 fewer in a week.
-Seville is the province with the most hospitalised with 139 and 42 patients in ICU, followed by Malaga with 81 and 14 in ICU; Cordoba with 78 and 22 in ICU; Jaen with 68 and 16 in ICU; Granada with 73 and 17 in ICU; Cadiz with 55 and seven in ICU; Huelva with 27 and two in ICU and Almeria with 16 and four in ICU. Covid Malaga- Covid rate rises almost 12 points in Malaga after the weekend, with nearly 300 more infections: {Translation} Updated: 28 Junio, 2021, 13:27
-The rate of Covid in the province of Malaga has shot up almost 12 points after the weekend and stands at 170.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 158.6 last Friday, according to data updated on Monday on the website of the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalusia (IECA). The balance also leaves nearly 300 more infections, corresponding to the last two days.
-In the case of the incidence, this exceeds that of 4 June, which was the day on which the province entered high risk by exceeding 150 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants by one tenth of a point. In this time, Malaga has not only worsened its numbers, but has now exceeded the Andalusian average. The Andalusian rate is 164.2 in the last fourteen days after falling one point in the last 48 hours. Therefore, the province of Malaga exceeds it by 5.9 points. Almeria has the best figures (65.8), while the worst is Cordoba (255).
-This would be, broadly speaking, the epidemiological panorama with which the province starts the week, after the first weekend in which masks are no longer obligatory outdoors as long as there is a distance of 1.5 metres between people.
-The rise extends to the capital of Malaga, where the incidence also increases, by nine points to 166.5. Both the province as a whole and the city remain at high risk for coronavirus, with a rate of more than 150 cases in the last 15 days.
-By health districts, the Costa del Sol is the one with the worst scenario, as with a rate of 214.2 it is close to the extreme risk level (that which exceeds 250). It is followed by the Guadalhorce Valley (183.6), the Malaga district (158.6) and the Vega de Antequera (151.6). All of them are at high risk. Only two remain at medium risk (the established between 50 and 150 incidence): the Serranía de Ronda (72.7) and Axarquía (94).
-As for the number of cases of coronavirus infection, the province of Malaga reported 296 positive cases on Monday. It should be remembered that these are the cases detected in the last two days, since, as usual, the Regional Ministry of Health did not report any new cases on Sunday.
-With this figure, Malaga has the highest number of cases in Andalusia, followed by Seville with 259, Granada with 190, Cadiz with 173, Cordoba with 130, Jaen with 85, Huelva with 65 and Almeria with 62.
-Those cured in the last 48 hours are again fewer than the number of new infections: 286, according to the statistics of the Junta de Andalucía. Thus, since the pandemic began, 106,068 Malaga residents have been infected, of whom 101,855 have managed to overcome the disease.
-The most positive aspect of Monday’s report is that no deaths have been reported in the province, so the total number of deaths remains at 1,670. Andalusia has recorded three deaths this weekend, two in Cordoba and one in Granada.)
-The situation in hospitals also remains under control, with the lowest number of hospitalised patients with Covid in the last 10 months. There are currently 81 patients admitted to hospital in the province, one more than the day before, of whom 14 are in the Intensive Care Units (ICU), one more than the previous day. According to health data, since the beginning of the pandemic, 8,352 people have been admitted to hospital after being infected with Covid and 797 have been admitted to the ICU. Spain to require travelers from UK show PCR test or be fully vaccinated: Starting on Friday, Spain will demand a negative PCR test or proof of full vaccination from UK travelers, due to concerns over the delta variant of the coronavirus. The conditions will particularly affect travelers to the Balearic Islands, which are going on the UK’s green travel list on June 30. The archipelago is hoping to receive an influx of British visitors due to the eased restrictions. The rest of Spain will remain on the UK’s amber list, which requires quarantining upon return to the UK.
-For British tourists, there are two possibilities: full vaccination with one of the vaccines authorized by the European Medicines Agency or the World Health Organization, with the second dose administered at least 14 days before travel; or a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours before arriving in Spain. This represents a change from Spain’s position, adopted a little over a month ago, when the UK was included on its list of countries whose nationals could freely enter the country. Andalusia extends anti-Covid measures until 6 July, when the expert committee meets: {Translation, summary} Updated: 28/06/2021, 14:43
-Andalusia will continue until 6 July with the same measures against Covid as it has at the moment. This has been confirmed by the minister Jesús Aguirre.
-Aguirre has pointed out that the community will be able to continue with de-escalation when two milestones are reached. On the one hand, that the number of hospitalised patients falls below 500 and, on the other, that the cumulative incidence is less than 150 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in two weeks.
-In the first case, this figure could be reached by the end of this week. If the trend of recent months continues, there could be fewer than 500 hospitalisations for Covid-19 in Andalusia at the weekend.
-There may be more doubts about the cumulative incidence. The rate at which this pandemic speed meter is falling makes it difficult for this number to be less than 150 points before next Tuesday. As a reference, it is currently at 164.2 and in one week it has dropped nine points.
-In this regard, the Minister pointed out that, although hospitalisations “are progressively falling”, the figure set for “taking measures with peace of mind” has not been reached, according to Europa Press. Source, Spanish: https://sevilla.abc.es/andalucia/sevi-andalucia-prorroga-medidas-anti-covid-hasta-6-julio-cuando-reune-comite-expertos-202106281443_noticia.html

First Minister warned Scots to be cautious as the country was hit by 3285 new cases on Monday: The previous record high number in daily cases was 2999, recorded on Friday. The First Minister said the “steep rise in Covid cases” came as Scotland faced the “faster transmitting Delta strain of the virus”. Britain’s ‘freedom day’ will come on July 19, says government: [Updated: June 28, 2021, 7:12 PM CEST] Britain will lift most of its remaining COVID-19 restrictions on July 19 in what has been dubbed “Freedom Day”, the government said on Monday despite fears that an increase in coronavirus cases could lead to more deaths.
-“With every day that goes by it’s clearer to me and all our scientific advisers that we’re very likely to be in a position on July 19 to say that really is the terminus and we can go back to life as it was before COVID as far as possible,” PM Boris Johnson told reporters.
-New health minister Sajid Javid confirmed the decision in parliament, saying he had spent his first day in the job studying the data to see if the next stage of easing restrictions, called step four, could go ahead any earlier.
“Whilst we decided not to bring forward step four, we see no reason to go beyond the 19th of July,” he told parliament, urging the public to stick to the restrictions for now. ‘Extremely high risk’- Hong Kong bans passenger flights from U.K. over Delta variant: It said in a statement Monday that the U.K. has been classified as “extremely high risk“ because of the “recent rebound of the epidemic situation in the U.K. and the widespread delta variant virus strain there.”
Under the classification, people who have stayed in the U.K. for more than two hours will be restricted from boarding passenger flights to Hong Kong. Full article: https://globalnews.ca/news/7986378/hong-kong-flights-uk-delta-variant/

Recommendation for SPW Construction Services:
We’ve just had our very old fashioned bathroom renovated by SPW and are delighted with the end result! Nothing was a problem for them and all the work was done efficiently by skilled and friendly workmen. Lower the ceiling? No problem. Remove the bath? No problem. Lights in the new ceiling? No problem. Tile on tiles? No problem. New toilet? No problem. Get rid of all the debris? No problem. All electrical and plumbing finished to high standard and the tiling is perfect! Highly recommend SPW. In fact we are going to have our en suite renovated by SPW also!

COVID-19

Malaga recorded the lowest number of hospitalized with Covid for the past 10 months: {Translation, summary} Updated: June 27, 2021, 13:52
-Good news for Malaga with regard to the pressure of care derived from the coronavirus. The data provided by the Regional Ministry of Health and Families has recorded the lowest number of hospitalised patients with Covid in the last 10 months.
-As of this Sunday, Malaga has 80 people hospitalised with the virus and 13 people in Intensive Care Units (ICU). The province has not had this figure since 24 August, when 79 people were admitted, i.e. for the last 10 months.
-Specifically, of the 513 hospital admissions in Andalusia, Seville is the province with the most hospital admissions, with a total of 137 and 43 patients in ICU. Malaga is second on the list, followed by Cordoba with 73 and 21 in ICU; Jaen with 69 and 16 in Intensive Care Units, and Granada with 64 and 16 in ICU. The provinces of Cádiz, Huelva and Almería have the lowest number of cases.
-Another encouraging fact is that a third of the population of Malaga – 33% – has already received two doses of the vaccines.
-The province closes this week with 150,336 new doses of vaccine administered against the coronavirus, 7,775 more in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative total to 1,385,777, compared to 1,235,441 a week ago, specifically on Sunday 20 June.
-In the last seven days, 90,012 more people have been fully vaccinated. The total in the province is 557,214, thanks to the 6,591 people vaccinated on the last day, after this week’s immunisation of more than half a million citizens with the two doses.
-The number of people who have been injected with at least one dose rises to 861,681, which means that in the last week 68,698 Malaga citizens have received the first vaccine. Seville also leads the vaccination list at Andalusian level with a total of 1,643,079 doses administered, almost 9,000 more than the previous day. Covid Andalucia-Descent of hospitalization for fifth day:
{Translation, summary} Updated: 27/06/2021 14:37
-Andalusia has registered this Sunday 27 June a new drop in the number of people hospitalised with coronavirus to 513, 16 less in 24 hours, 57 less than seven days ago and the lowest figure since 1 September 2020, when there were 493, while those admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) have fallen to 122, which are six less in one day and 23 less in a week.
-This is detailed by the Junta de Andalucía in the daily report on the disease. The number of hospitalised patients has fallen for the fifth day, by 16 on Sunday, 25 on Saturday, 14 on Friday, 24 on Thursday and 17 on Wednesday, after rising by 14 on Tuesday and 25 on Monday, and falling by 44 on the previous Sunday. Specifically, seven days ago there were 570 hospitalised patients. Of the 513 admitted, 64 are in Grenada, including 16 in ICU.
-For their part, ICU patients have fallen by six after remaining unchanged on Saturday after falling by four on Friday, five on Thursday and six on Wednesday. Source, Spanish: https://www.granadadigital.es/grafico-hospitalizaciones-vacunas-covid-andalucia-granada/

There’s a new variant concern of the coronavirus- Lambda, more contagious, and with the ability to evade vaccines: {Translation, summary} Updated: 26.06.2021 – 09:06
-Spain is now the seventh country with the most cases (44-to-date) of this new variant that originated in Peru.
-European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) predicts that it will account for 90% of coronavirus cases in the European Union (EU) by the end of August – the World Health Organisation (WHO) has introduced the new mutation to its list of ‘variants of concern’.
-This is Lambda or C.37, first detected in August 2020 in Peru and classified as “of interest” (VOI) by the WHO as of 14 June 2021. Here 90.6% of cases are already due to the C.37 or Lambda variant.
-The Barcelona Institute for Global Health stresses that the Lambda variant has been classified as “of interest” due to “its high presence in Peru and other South American countries”. According to immunologist Adelaida Sarukhan, “Lambda carries mutations that could increase its transmissibility or its capacity to evade the immune response, but there is very little evidence at the moment”.
-The difference between variant classified as “of concern” and “of interest” by the WHO lies in the fact that the former involve an “increase in transmissibility or detrimental change” epidemiologically, as well as an “increase in virulence or change in the clinical presentation of the disease”, as well as managing to reduce the effectiveness of social and public health measures or of available diagnostics, vaccines or therapies. In contrast, the latter have been identified as a cause of community transmission or origin of multiple cases, or have been detected in several countries.
-Spain, which is closely linked to Latin America, is currently the seventh country in the world with the most cases of the Andean Lambda variant, behind Chile, where 670 cases of the C.37 strain have been identified to date, the USA (with 524 cases), Peru (with 222), Germany (87), Argentina (86) and Mexico (57).

Tour de France- massive crash caused by fan wipes out half of peloton: Just minutes after Christian Prudhomme had set the 108th edition of the annual bike race in motion, there was carnage on stage one. Tony Martin, 36, went down first after he was taken out by a member of the public. The spectator was stood holding up a cardboard sign with ‘Allez Opi-Omi!’ written on it in black marker.

Covid in Andalusia- things stay much the same: {Translation} Updated: 25/06/2021, 14:10
-With 1,328 new infections, the 14-day cumulative incidence rate has fallen for the fifth consecutive day, although by just over one point to 165 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants. As on the previous day, this is a high number of infections but lower than on the previous two Fridays when 1,453 cases were recorded (18 June) and 1,441 (11 June).
-Mortality remains contained, with only 2 deaths in the last 24 hours in Malaga and Cordoba.
-The evolution of the cumulative incidence rate shows different trends by province. Thus, Cordoba has once again risen to the highest rate in the region, with 275 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. There have been slight rises in the provinces with the lowest rates and a significant drop in the number of cases in Seville and Huelva.
-As in previous days, the best news comes from the hospitals with a new drop in the number of patients admitted with Covid. U.S. approves Roche drug for emergency use against severe COVID-19: U.S. health regulators have approved Roche’s arthritis drug Actemra for emergency use to treat hospitalized COVID-19 patients, giving an extra boost to a medicine that was already allowed to be administered on compassionate grounds.
The drug can be used to treat patients who are receiving systemic corticosteroids and require supplemental oxygen, non-invasive or invasive mechanical ventilation, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, the FDA said, adding studies showed Actemra helped reduce risk of death and speed recovery. The ‘trap’ of post-vaccination antibody tests: unnecessary and not recommended by authorities: {Translation}
-With mass vaccination, numerous offers for serological tests have emerged in Spain for people to find out whether they produce antibodies in their blood after receiving this preventive treatment. The prices for these tests are around 20-50 euros.
-Various advertising campaigns try to convince potential consumers of the need for these tests. For example, one of the companies marketing these tests argues that: “With such novel vaccines to which different population groups will not respond homogeneously, it is appropriate to test the immunity that the vaccine can provide by means of a simple test”. Another hospital group recommends the post-vaccination antibody test because “it is the gold standard test to see if you have immunity to the virus after receiving the vaccine”.
-Beyond the debatability of the above messages, one advertising campaign has stood out from the rest: “Have you been well vaccinated? Check your antibody level with a post-vaccine IgG ELISA test”.
-This message was doubly irresponsible: on the one hand, it promoted fear or doubt among people, some of whom may wonder if they are properly vaccinated, and, on the other hand, it questioned the work of the nurses who are administering the vaccines. Even if the vaccines are administered flawlessly, a small percentage of the population may not generate an effective immune response due to their biological characteristics.
-Upon learning of this advertising campaign, the General Council of Nursing (CGE) made the following statements on Twitter: “This ad is wrong and unfortunate. No, you have not been wrongly vaccinated because nurses know how to do their job and are professionals. Don’t sow doubts about vaccination to sell your evidence, let alone put the spotlight on the act of vaccination or those who carry it out”. Subsequently, the CGE reported in a press release that on 16 June it had filed a complaint with the Ministries of Health and Consumer Affairs about this advertising.
-The company has replied to elDiario.es that “the last thing we intended was to offend anyone, least of all nurses”. Following the Council’s complaint, Life Length has apologised and “we have withdrawn the campaign and the posters”.
*Numerous reasons against it*
-Beyond the criticism of the nursing community, serological tests are unnecessary or even counterproductive to assess the immunity generated by vaccines in the general population. This is why many health institutions, such as the Ministry of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), do not recommend these tests after vaccination.
-There are many reasons why serological tests are not recommended: firstly, because immunity to COVID-19 depends mainly on the response of T-lymphocytes, which are not detected by these tests. Thus, a person may very well have robust immune protection with low or undetectable antibodies. In fact, it is normal for antibodies to drop in the blood over time and this does not mean that the person is not protected at all. On the other hand, having antibodies does not guarantee 100% protection against reinfection. Secondly, there is a risk of false negatives (especially among rapid tests), especially if the specific antibodies produced by vaccination (against protein S or Spike) are not correctly detected. In addition, many rapid tests on the market detect antibodies against other coronavirus proteins (such as N) and not against protein S, so these will always give negative results to vaccinees.
-Thirdly, it is not yet clear what levels of post-vaccination antibodies are considered protective. The FDA elaborates on this issue on its website: “While a positive antibody test result can be used to help identify persons who may have had a SARS-CoV-2 infection, more research is needed with respect to persons who have received the COVID-19 vaccine. Currently licensed antibody tests for SARS-CoV-2 have not been evaluated to determine the level of protection provided by the immune response to COVID-19 vaccination”.
-Finally, as explained in a previous article on immunity of the vaccinated, we must bear in mind that, when we reach herd immunity through vaccines, not only those immunised through vaccines will be protected, but also individuals who have not received them for various reasons and also those who have been vaccinated and have not produced an effective immune response. Ultimately, immunised individuals will act as protective “firewalls” against the latter.
-Ultimately, these antibody tests add more uncertainty and doubt than certainty and are therefore not recommended from a health point of view for the general population. They provide incomplete information, with a certain margin of error, which is of no practical use. In the same way that antibody tests are not carried out in the general population to see if the vaccine against polio, tetanus, hepatitis B or whooping cough have been effective (except in specific cases, such as immunosuppression or pregnancy), it does not make sense to do so for the vaccine against COVID-19, no matter how many marketing campaigns there are out there to try to convince consumers that these tests are recommended or necessary. -Precisely in the chapter of the sanctions regime, the act specifies that “the breach of the obligation of use of face masks laid down in article 6 shall be considered to be minor offence for the purposes of the provisions of article 57 of the Law 33/2011 of 4 October, and punished with a fine of up to one hundred euros”. -The Ministry of Health, in its latest daily report, has reported 4,507 new infections in the last 24 hours, which is also an increase on the 4,341 recorded yesterday, and brings the total number of people infected with COVID during the pandemic to 3,777,539.

UK

The British still not be able to travel to the Costa del Sol:
{Translation} The Costa del Sol will still have to wait for British tourists, its main source market. According to Thursday’s announcement by the UK authorities, only the Balearic Islands are now on the green list of safe destinations, which exempts travellers from a ten-day quarantine on their return to the UK.
-The British government has decided to take into account the regional specificities of the Balearic Islands, which are now on the green list, while for the rest of Spain’s regions, including Andalusia, the traffic light remains amber.
-The announcement was made by the British Transport Minister, Grant Shapps. From 30 June, the Balearic Islands, along with Malta, Barbados and other territories, will be removed from the “amber list”, in which, in addition to quarantine, travellers are obliged to pay for three coronavirus tests, one before boarding the return flight and two more on arrival in England.
-Prior to the announcement by Boris Johnson’s government, Northern Ireland and Scotland also published the results of their review of travel considerations, in both cases placing the Balearic Islands on the green list. SPORTS

Uefa scraps away goals rule from next season: Uefa has scrapped the away goals rule in its competitions, proclaiming it was no longer a fair way of deciding the winner of European ties. Aleksander Ceferin, the Uefa president, said: “The impact of the rule now runs counter to its original purpose as, in fact, it now dissuades home teams – especially in first legs – from attacking, because they fear conceding a goal that would give their opponents a crucial advantage. There is also criticism of the unfairness, especially in extra-time, of obliging the home team to score twice when the away team has scored.” Full article: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2021/06/24/away-goals-rule-scrapped-champions-league-ties-go-extra/

OTHER NEWS

Microsoft announces Windows 11: Microsoft plans to release Windows 11 to the general public by the holidays, so we can probably expect it sometime around late November. Before that, we’ll likely see a slew of public betas, starting next week. It’ll be a free update to Windows 10 users.
As Microsoft Chief Product Officer Panos Panay noted in today’s announcement, the overall idea behind the design is to make you feel “an incredible sense of calm,” but at the same time, the Windows team has also worked to make it a lot faster. Windows Updates, for example, are supposed to be 40 percent faster, but Panay also noted that starting up your machine and even browsing should feel much faster.
One surprise feature here is that you will now also be able to run Android apps on Windows. These apps will seem like native apps that can be integrated into the taskbar, for example. These apps will be in the redesigned Microsoft Store, via – you want to sit down for this – the Amazon Appstore! (These will likely only be “Microsoft approved” Android apps. Don’t expect to find any pirate IPTV apps. -Ed.) Full article: https://techcrunch.com/2021/06/24/microsoft-announces-windows-11-generally-available-by-the-holidays/

EE has become the first major UK mobile network to bring back charges for customers who travel to Europe: Brexit meant operators could reimpose charges, though the main four – EE, O2, Three and Vodafone – said they had no plans to.
New EE customers who join from July 7 will face a charge for using their data, making calls, or sending text messages.
Though it does not include existing customers, anyone who upgrades and renews their contract from the same date will also have to pay (so if your contract ends and you leave it rolling and unchanged, you will not fall under the new rules).
A flat fee of £2 per day will apply to use your full EE data, minutes and text allowance when travelling to affected countries in the EU.
Depending on how long you intend to travel, it could work out cheaper getting a 30-day Roam Abroad Pass.
The pass costs £10 for those with an Essential plan, but people using the Smart or Full Works packages can add it at no extra cost, as long as it is added before you travel.

Fourth Covid wave in Andalusia: {Translation} Updated:
23/06/2021, 18:08
-The evolution of the fourth wave of coronavirus in Andalusia shows a very slow improvement as evidenced by the 1,175 new infections recorded on Wednesday, a figure very similar to previous Wednesdays, as on 16 June there were 1,196 cases and on 9 June 1,263.
-This day adds 6 deaths to a statistic of deaths by Covid that brings the total number of fatalities of the pandemic in Andalusia to 10,171. Seville has four, Malaga one and Jaen another.
-The 14-day accumulated incidence rate has dropped with the same slowness, only two points in relation to Tuesday’s rate, to 169.5 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants. By provinces, the changes are not very relevant. The highest incidence is marked by Cordoba, which today drops three points (267), being the only province at extreme alert levels. It is followed by Huelva (211), Granada (193), Seville (188) and Malaga (155), at high alert levels, and Jaen (140), Cadiz (139) and Almeria (67), at medium alert levels.
-More representative of the current epidemiological situation is the decrease in the curve of the pressure of care in hospitals, which again returns to figures of hospitalised patients below 600. This Wednesday there are 592 covid patients admitted, 17 less than on Tuesday, of which 137 are being treated in ICU, six less than the day before. Infection rate soars in Marbella at the start of the summer with the worst figure since March: {Translation} Updated: 23/06/2021, 17:57
-The summer season has barely begun and mobility is already beginning to have its effects on the epidemiological situation in the municipalities of the Costa del Sol. Marbella, the main coastal town in the province after Malaga capital, has a cumulative incidence (AI) of Covid-19 of more than 254 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants and in the last fourteen days 376 new positives have been detected.
-This is the worst figure recorded in the municipality since 1 March, when the same rate stood at 281 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants. From then on, the figures began to improve, which meant that in just two and a half weeks, on 19 March, the bars and shops in Marbella were able to extend their opening hours beyond six in the evening.
-To date, together with Nerja (273.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), it is the coastal and tourist municipality on the Malaga coast with the worst evolution of the pandemic, despite the progress in the vaccination process.
-In the last week, infections have also increased in the neighbouring towns of Ojén (262.1) and Istán, which with 937.1 cases is the Malaga municipality with the highest accumulated incidence. Even so, its mayor, José Miguel Marín, explained to ABC that the situation is under control, as the positive cases – 14 in the last two weeks – occurred at a family meal and the contagions have been contained thanks to tracing.
-So far in June, 24 deaths have been recorded in the province of Malaga and 1,669 people have died as a result of the virus since the beginning of the pandemic. The number of vaccines administered has considerably reduced the aggressiveness of Covid-19 and, therefore, the number of hospitalisations and deaths. However, the number of infections continues, as experts indicate that none of the four preparations (Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Janssen) prevent infection.
-The Junta de Andalucía has reported 235 new positive cases in the province in the last 24 hours and 89 people have been admitted to hospitals in Malaga, ten of them in intensive care units.
-As far as vaccines are concerned, Malaga is, after Seville, the second Andalusian province in which the most doses have been administered: 1,285,378. A total of 820,302 have already received their first dose and almost half a million Malaga residents – 494,715 – have already received the full course. Covid UK- UK reported on Wednesday a total of 16,135 new cases of coronavirus in 24 hours: This is the highest number of daily cases since early February, according to data from the UK Department of Health.
Also, the authorities reported 19 deaths covid-19, which amounts to 128,027 from the start of the pandemic in March 2020.
Deaths within 28 days of positive test, over the past 7 days, has shown a 53% increase.

‘Likely link’ between rare heart inflammation and Pfizer, Moderna vaccines -CDC advisers: June 23 (Reuters) – Rare cases of heart inflammation in adolescents and young adults are likely linked to vaccination with the Pfizer/BioNTech, and Moderna COVID-19 shots.
The COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Technical (VaST) Work Group said that the risk of myocarditis or pericarditis following vaccination with the mRNA-based shots in adolescents and young adults is notably higher after the second dose and in males.
Dr. Tom Shimabukuro, deputy director of the CDC’s Immunization Safety Office, said data suggests a rate of 12.6 cases per million in the three weeks after the second shot in 12- to 39-year-olds. Russia says warning shots deter UK warship; London denies it: The Russian Defense Ministry said a patrol ship fired warning shots after the HMS Defender had ignored a notice against intrusion and sailed 3 kilometers (1.6 nautical miles) into Russia’s territorial waters near Sevastopol, the main Russian naval base in Crimea. It said a Russian Su-24 bomber also dropped four bombs ahead of the vessel to persuade the Defender to change course. Minutes later, the Defender left Russian waters, the ministry said.
Britain’s Ministry of Defense denied the Defender had been fired on or was in Russian waters, but had been in Ukrainian waters. Full article: https://apnews.com/article/russia-middle-east-black-sea-europe-government-and-politics-595debd7128eb2ae4ec68e240d1e712f

Delta variant- Merkel urges European countries to quarantine incoming Brits: Chancellor Angela Merkel has said today she wants more European countries to follow suit in Germany’s rule to quarantine travellers coming from Great Britain.
Speaking at what many believe to be her last Q&A as chancellor, she said that those entering European states from countries with high levels of the Delta variant should need to self-isolate.
“In our country, if you come from Great Britain, you have to go into quarantine – and that’s not the case in every European country, and that’s what I would like to see,” Merkel told the Bundestag lower house of parliament.

How much do you tip? Anonymous customer leaves restaurant a tip of $16K: A customer who ordered a couple of chili dogs, fried pickle chips and drinks at a New Hampshire restaurant left a big tip, $16,000.
The staff didn’t notice at first, Mike Zarella, owner of the Stumble Inn Bar and Grill in Londonderry, told WMUR-TV. The tab was $37.93 before the tip.
“It was on the credit card statement, they put it down next to the register and he said three times, ‘Don’t spend it all in one place.’” Zarella said one staffer then flipped it over and looked, “and she’s like, ‘Oh my god, are you serious?’ And he said, ‘I want you to have it, you guys work hard.’”
Zarella thought it was a mistake, but the bar manager talked to the customer, who said it wasn’t. He also wished to remain anonymous. Full article: https://apnews.com/article/nh-state-wire-health-coronavirus-pandemic-lifestyle-restaurants-565d0ba47c0a04d5c22aadde70419e07

To see more images of Vetiver go to this link.

The drop in Covid registrations in Andalusia confirms the improved evolution of the pandemic: {Translation} Updated: 22/06/2021, 16:25
-Coronavirus data in Andalusia have improved, consolidating the favourable trend observed since a few days ago. The Regional Ministry of Health and Families reports 1,098 new infections on Tuesday, down from 1,210 on Monday, and 1,267 and 1,161 on Tuesdays in the last two weeks respectively.
-The figure of eight deaths, although high, is also a change from the 14 and 18 deaths recorded on Tuesdays 15 and 8 June.
-The improvement in infection data is reflected in another drop in the cumulative incidence. At 14 days it stands at 171 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants. The 7-day rate confirms the better evolution, with 76 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and is now close to average alert values.
-By provinces, the discordant note is marked by Cordoba, which continues to increase its incidence rate significantly with 20 points above the previous day’s value. At 14 days it stands at 270 cases, the only province with extreme risk values. The trend is not favourable if we look at the 141 cases at 7 days.
-Only Huelva (214) has a 14-day incidence rate of over 200 cases, although its progression is favourable with daily drops of around 10 points. It is followed in incidence by Granada (193) with the same downward trend, Seville (191), Malaga (155), Jaen, which has already dropped to average alert values (143), Cadiz (142) and Almeria, which has been stagnating for days at 66 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants, although with a 7-day rate of 29 cases.
-In contrast to other days, the overall number of people hospitalised with Covid has increased, although to a lesser extent than on other Tuesdays. 609 people have been admitted with the disease, 14 more than on Monday, of whom 143 are in the ICU, one more than the previous day.

Covid Spain- Health notifies 4.040 new positive and 30 deaths in the last 24 hours: {Translation} Updated: 22 June 2021, 18:56.
-The covid pandemic has added 4,041 new infections this Tuesday and the fall in the cumulative incidence in 14 days is slowing down, and after a drop of two tenths of a point it stands at 92.2, according to the Ministry of Health, which has reported 30 deaths in the last 24 hours.
-Likewise, the 7-day cumulative incidence – the one that advances the trend of the virus by reporting more recent cases – also remains stable at 42.9 cases, compared to 42.1 yesterday, Monday.
-In addition, Health has reported a slight decrease of four tenths in the occupancy of the ICUs by covid patients to 7.8%, while the hospital pressure is 2.1% (two tenths less than yesterday).
-Madrid continues to lead in the occupation of ICUs, with a pressure of 16.4 %, while at the other extreme is Cantabria, with 0.94 %.
-The total number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic is 80,719, of which 68 have been counted in the last week, and the total number of infections is 3,768,691.
CUMULATIVE INCIDENCE

-In contrast, Andalusia (171.2) is the only region with a high risk of covid transmission (between 150 and 250 cases), while in the rest of the regions the risk is medium.
DEATHS
-Of the 68 deaths in the last seven days, 21 have been reported in Andalusia, 10 in the Basque Country and 6 in Madrid. Four regions have not reported any deaths from covid in the last seven days: Aragon, Ceuta, Melilla and La Rioja.
-Asturias remains the region with the highest lethality rate in the pandemic (3.7%), while the national rate is 2.1%.

SPAIN

Why Spain’s telecoms slap price hikes on their best customers and reward everyone else:
-Telefónica, Orange, Vodafone and Euskaltel are raising their fees for existing plans while simultaneously offering deals through their low-cost brands.
-Fierce competition in Spain’s telecommunications sector is driving operators to spend large amounts of cash on splashy ad campaigns for new “unparalleled offers.” Yet there is never any relevant information, not even in the form of a press statement, about the ongoing price hikes for existing customers.
-The latter typically find out about an upcoming change to their plan through an SMS or a discreet message in their last invoice. Often enough, the customer will miss the message and only find out when the new charge is collected. Andalucian Government Slams Sanchez’s Pardons Decision: The spokesman for the Andalucian government has slammed the decision to grant pardons to jailed Catalan separatists and has accused President Pedro Sanchez of manipulating the news cycle to obscure criticism.
The Council of Ministers, Spain’s cabinet, granted the pardons on June 22 after President Pedro Sanchez argued the pardons would clear the way for peace and stability with independence seeking Catalonia.
Opposition parties called Sanchez a “traitor”. The leader of Vox, Santiago Abascal said Sanchez had committed “treason” and called for the government to be censured. Full article: https://www.euroweeklynews.com/2021/06/22/andalucian-government-slams-sanchezs-pardons-decision/

Travelling through Portugal will be cheaper, the country will cut its toll by 50% from July!: {Translation, first 2 paragraphs only}
-While in Spain the introduction of tolls on motorways and roads has ceased to be a spectre and is closer to becoming a reality, on the other side of the Guadiana, neighbouring Portugal is taking a step backwards in the face of social and commercial demand to facilitate mobility and tourism at a decisive moment before the start of the summer.
-The Portuguese government has given the green light to a reduction in charges that will take effect next month, from 1 July, when there will be a generalised reduction of 50 % in the rates of the old roads without cost to users, including the A22 that crosses the Algarve, known as Via do Infante, which will reach 75% in the case of electric and non-polluting vehicles.

Lofven, who was defeated after nearly seven years in power over a plan to ease rent controls for new-build apartments, has a week to reach his decision. If he opts for a snap election, it would be Sweden’s first since 1958. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/swedish-pm-brink-parliament-readies-monday-no-confidence-vote-2021-06-21/

Recommendations & Requests

Bank Fees: Hello Digamites, that large bank in the centre of Torre Del Mar has put the charges for my resident current account up to 10 euro per month, that’s for the usual utilities/taxes on direct debit and a debit card. They said it is the cheapest they do and could only better it if I had my small UK pension paid directly every month, which is not possible because it is paid to me four weekly so the date is always moving. Also the exchange company I use wouldn’t be interested in such a small amount.
I don’t like the idea of doing banking on the mobile phone. Has anyone any idea where I might get a better deal? Thanks in anticipation. Colette.

COVID-19

Andalusia records the best Monday of the infection from April, and a single dead since Saturday: {Translation} Updated: 21/06/2021, 18:33
-Andalusia has only one death from Covid on Monday. This number is the result of the progress of the vaccination process, which has already reached more than half of the Andalusian population with at least one dose.
-There is also good news in terms of infections. This Monday, 1,210 cases of coronavirus have been reported in Andalusia, one hundred less than the previous day and the best Monday since the beginning of April. Although the community is reluctant to break the floor of a thousand daily infections, there is a downward trend in this meter.
-Proof of this is that the accumulated incidence for two weeks is also falling. This Monday it stands at 173.7 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants when last week it exceeded 180 points and reached around 190. This meter, however, is beginning not to be the best reflection of the progress of the pandemic because the vaccines mean that those who are infected are younger and therefore pass the disease asymptomatic with a mild form.
-For this reason, hospital pressure is a good gauge of the evolution of the Covid-19 crisis. And here too there is good news. Although Andalusia added 25 hospital admissions this Monday – the first day of the week always tends to raise this figure -, the community recorded 595, so it remains below 600 for the second day in a row.
-This is a figure that has not been reached in Andalusia for nine months and reduces hospital pressure to the lowest levels since last September.
-In the ICU there has also been a drop. There are 242 people admitted to intensive care, three less than yesterday, Sunday. This is also the lowest figure since September last year. The people who have overcome the disease since last Friday are located in the municipalities of Nerja (10). Rincón de la Victoria (9). Vélez-Málaga (7). Colmenar (3). Frigiliana (3). Algarrobo (2). Riogordo (1) and Torrox (1). Source, Spanish: https://www.axarquiahoy.es/articulo/axarquia-comarca/axarquia-inicia-semana-34-nuevos-casos-coronavirus-36-nuevos-curados/20210621144800041496.html

SPAIN

Government to lower VAT on electricity from 21% to 10%:
-The government has finally decided to reduce VAT on electricity from 21% to 10%, with the aim of reducing the cost of electricity bills, which in June were on course to be the most expensive in history.
-This means that the total amount of electricity bills will be 11% cheaper. For example, a bill of 60 euros will be reduced by 6.6 euros to 53.4 euros. For an amount of 50 euros, the saving will be 5.5 euros, to 44.5 euros.
-This measure is one of those considered by the coalition government following pressure from Unidas Podemos, although it comes after electricity prices have risen for almost three months and in the midst of the political debate on pardons for those convicted in Catalonia. Coincidentally, the reduction has been announced a few hours after President Pedro Sánchez announced that tomorrow’s Council of Ministers will approve the pardons.
-In the end, the thesis of Unidas Podemos has prevailed over those of the PSOE, as ministers Nadia Calviño and Teresa Ribera were more in favour of suspending once again the tax that levies a 7% tax on electricity generation. The same measure they already applied between October 2018 and March 2019 when the price of electricity reached 71 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) in the wholesale market. Currently, the average price in June is 82.5 euros.
-The lowering of VAT on electricity will be approved at the Council of Ministers next Thursday, according to sources consulted, and will affect domestic consumers with contracted power of up to 6 kW and SMEs with power of up to 15 kW.
-Likewise, the reduction will affect both consumers with a regulated tariff or pvpc and those with contracts in the deregulated market (fixed price for 12 months).
-Domestic consumers and SMEs have been charged 21% VAT on their bills since 2012, when Mariano Rajoy’s government raised this tax from 18% to 21%.
-In addition, the bill includes the special tax on electricity, which is 5.11269632% and is applied to the contracted power and the energy consumed.
(I do not understand this. Yet all the newspapers, in Spanish and English are repeating it. Lowering the VAT tax rate 11% does NOT decrease the total bill by 11%, it only lowers the VAT charged by 11%. Or am I missing something? -Ed.)
